Fans Think Selena Gomez's New Song 'Wolves' Is About Lupus

Selena Gomez has released some of the most interesting pop music this year. She kicked things off with “Bad Liar,” a plucky, stripped-down song that samples the Talking Heads’ 1977 hit “Psycho Killer.” Then, there was “Fetish,” a lush, electro/hip-hop jam with a featured rap from Gucci Mane. Now she’s hitting us with “Wolves,” an EDM collaboration with Marshmello. And if Gomez’s previous dance tracks are any indication (“I Want You to Know,” “It Ain’t Me”), “Wolves” will be a bona-fide smash.

It might be Gomez’s most personal song to date, too: Fans have picked up on a second meaning in its title that gives a clue into what the lyrics could detail. In Latin, “wolf” actually translates to “lupus,” which is also the name of the autoimmune disease Gomez opened up about having more than two years ago.

“We see you @selenagomez,” one fan wrote on Twitter, along with the words “wolf” and “lupus.” Check it out for yourself, below:

It wouldn’t be surprising if Gomez discusses her lupus diagnosis in this new song. After Gomez released “The Heart Wants What It Wants” in 2014, her music’s been incredibly forthcoming. (Look no further than a track on Revival called “Sober” for proof of this. The gut-wrenching tune is all about being in love with someone with substance abuse issues.)

Her social media has also become more transparent now—especially regarding her lupus. A few weeks ago, Gomez revealed the disease caused her to get a kidney transplant; her best friend, Francia Raisa, was the donor. “[Raisa] gave me the ultimate gift and sacrifice by donating her kidney to me. I am incredibly blessed,” she wrote on Instagram. Who knows? Maybe this song is a tribute to her.

We’ll find out when Gomez drops “Wolves” on Wednesday, October 25.

The Weeknd Reportedly Scheduled His Tour Around Selena Gomez's Kidney Transplant

PHOTO: Jim Spellman/WireImage/Getty Images

The Weeknd (a.k.a. Abel Tesfaye) may make a good Instagram husband for Selena Gomez, but that’s just a small reason why he’s a good partner for her. One big one, however? His support for Selena Gomez during her struggles with her health.

The “Fetish” singer recently revealed in an emotional Instagram post that she underwent a kidney transplant this summer. While her friend Francia Raisa was the one who selflessly donated the kidney, it seems her boyfriend of almost a year was also an incredibly supportive figure throughout the emotional and physically painful time. According to People, the R&B singer even scheduled his performances around Selena’s surgery and recovery.

Though Selena has not revealed the exact date of her surgery, we do know that The Weeknd had some breaks in his tour schedule this summer; per People, he was initially announced as a performer for the 2017 MTV VMAs on August 27, but he did not appear, making fans speculate it was so he could spend more time with Gomez. (The two have been spotted on several dates around New York City over the summer—even reportedly moving in together and getting a puppy—so the speculation is fitting.)

Furthermore, TMZ is reporting that Selena went in to kidney failure in May as a result of complications from lupus, a disease that causes the body’s immune system to attack its own organs and tissues. Selena was reportedly suffering while visiting The Weeknd on tour in Chicago and Abel was “right by her side.” (TMZ adds that at that point Selena was already on a kidney transplant list.)

The Weeknd has yet to say anything publicly about his girlfriend’s health, but he has been showing his love and support in more subtle ways as of late. Glad to see Selena has a strong support system to help her recover.

Selena Gomez's Makeup Is Winning New York Fashion Week

PHOTO: Getty Images / Mike Point

New York Fashion Week aside, September has been busy for Selena Gomez. She’s now living (temporarily and reportedly) with her boyfriend The Weeknd and has been spotted filming a new movie all up and down Manhattan. Oh, she also just got a puppy, which appears to be of the too small and cute to yet be housebroken variety, and—to top it off—she has a new Coach collection to rep.

Yet, despite her very busy schedule, she’s still managed to give us life every time she leaves the house—each look better than the next, which is saying something because her hair and makeup has been so good. They’ve honestly been as fresh and intriguing as anything we’ve seen come down the runway. We’re basically Leslie Jones-ing over Sel right now.

Let’s start from the beginning of the week, shall we?

First up: Selena’s ’60s mod look for the Harper’s Bazaar Icons party, complete with beehive updo, Twiggy lashes on top and bottom, thick brows, and a nude palette of lip, eye, and cheek color that’s just different enough not to be dubbed monochromatic. Compared to some of the high contrast and dramatic eyeliner looks we’ve seen been seeing on the runway, a soft focus undereye effect is insanely refreshing.

As usual, Selena’s fashion week night out look perfectly toes the line between high fashion glamour and real human person with real human skin. It’s not surprising since Hung Vanngo is behind it and has a way of making his clients look gorgeous and glow-y without robbing them of their actual faces. Again, a welcome thing during Fashion Week madness.

The next day, Selena switched things up with a mix of romantic and vampy vibes that we’ll probably spend the rest of fall trying to pull off. Soft, shiny hair plus deep matte—we want to say mauve, but better than mauve—lipstick and the pop star’s usual lashes for days completed her beauty look for the Business of Fashion 500 Gala.

This final Fashion Week look (so far; we cannot emphasize enough that this is an actively reported piece) has got to be our favorite though. Vanngo posted this photo of her on the way to the Coach runway show. Was he inspired by the stamped eyeliner runway look at Jason Wu? Hard to say, but whatever the inspo, we’ll take anything the two of them serve—and this shimmer/rounded wing combo is at the top of our “must copy” list.

The Weeknd Is Really Into Whatever Selena Gomez's "Not-So-Secret" Project Is

Selena Gomez and The Weeknd are adorably guilty of social media PDA: they use Instagram Stories to brag about the other’s successes, post Snapchats of each other’s photoshoots and magazine covers, and can 100-percent count on the other for a heart on just about any pic they upload. The Weeknd’s also been known to deep-like Selena’s Instas, which makes him about a hundred times more relatable.

The latest evidence of their infatuation? Makeup artist Hung Vanngo posted pics of Selena in hair and makeup for a “not so secret” project she’s currently working on—and either The Weeknd really likes to keep tabs on the latest in celebrity beauty or he’s so excited for Selena, he went so far as to like the finished look on her pro’s page.

But really, how couldn’t he: Selena’s wet-look hair and bright red lips are gorgeous (not to mention those earrings). It’s pretty cute. After all, Insta-stalking your S.O. is one thing, but creepin’ on over to their makeup artist’s Insta feed to declare your appreciation for them is true devotion.

Here’s the image in question:

And the receipt:

We mortals, meanwhile, can’t wait to see what this not-so-secret project of hers is—word on the street is that it’s for her next music video, but there’s still no confirmation on that so far. But if it is, count on us to be keeping a close watch out for it. If it’s anything as complex and wacky as her “Fetish” video, it’s going to be pretty cool.

Just check out these sneak peeks Selena posted to her Instagram story:

While we wait for the video (or not, who knows?!) to drop, we’ll be seeing them all couple-y and cute IRL when they attend the VMAs on Sunday night. There’s no doubt they’ll look amazing on the red carpet together—and, probably, be all over each other’s Instagrams the next day. Heart-eye emojis all around for these two.

The Inspiring Message Behind Selena Gomez's $75 Choker

PHOTO: Picture Perfect / Splash News

It only takes a few taps on Instagram to see that Selena Gomez‘s style game has been next-level this summer. This past weekend was no exception: She stepped out in a black long-sleeved bodysuit and red skirt, both by minimalist label Khaite. What really caught our attention, though, was the choker she accessorized the outfit with—not only because it’s a subtle but chic addition to the look, but also because it sends a message we can stand behind.

Gomez’s exact gold-plated necklace is from the ethical and activism-minded brand Slow Factory, and bears the phrase, “We the people”—a reference to the U.S. Constitution. “I made the necklace shortly after [President Donald Trump’s travel ban on seven Muslim-majority countries] was announced, as my immigration lawyer advised me not to travel,” Céline Semaan, the label’s founder and designer (who’s originally from Lebanon), tells Glamour. “I reached out to the ACLU for a collaboration, showed them the prototype for the necklace and we took it from there,” she explains. The choker retails for $75, with 10% of the each purchase going directly to the ACLU.

Having someone with Selena-level star power wear your designs can have a huge difference for a small brand like Slow Factory. And Semaan notes that it’s already feeling the impact. “It was crazy—we got lots of orders [after Gomez wore the necklace], which means lots of donations to the ACLU,” she says. This kind of exposure is “huge,” Semaan adds,”because it gives us the opportunity to raise more money for the causes and the NGOs we work with.” In addition to the ACLU, Slow Factory has partnered with ANERA to raise money for refugee education in Lebanon and the WWF to fund the organization’s environmental preservation efforts.

“[Slow Factory’s] mission is to use fashion as a medium for social change,” says Semaan. “When we cast a wider net, we really impact more people and create a positive change.” Now that the brand has gotten a signal boost from Gomez, the designer hopes that the newfound attention “means that more people can wear [the necklace], continue to show support, and become fashion activists by funding important initiatives.”

With a single accessory, Gomez shared a message that feels more timely than ever (all the while supporting an emerging, female-owned brand)—though, it’s not totally surprising, seeing as this is the same person who sprinkled her latest designer collaboration with powerful affirmations for her fans. You can shop her exact necklace on Slow Factory’s website.
