We Finally Know Who's Responsible for That Infamous Game of Thrones Coffee Cup

Remember how obsessed we all were over the Case of the Game of Thrones Coffee Cup back in May? Well, rest easy, people: We finally have some answers.

If you need a refresher on the situation, here you go: In one of the episodes from Game of Thrones‘s final season, fans noticed an errant coffee cup placed next to Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke), which was an obvious anachronistic mistake.

People were outraged that a show with such a massive budget could miss something so glaring—but, hey, people are human and they need their caffeine on long shoots.

People blamed Clarke, Sophie Turner, and Kit Harington at various times. “I hear this every day of my life. This coffee-cup thing,” Turner said in an interview on Conan back in June. “It’s good to know the coffee cup got more press than the final season altogether. The coffee cup was where Kit’s chair was. At first I blamed it on Emilia, but I don’t think Emilia would do that. Kit is lazy, and I think he would’ve done that. It was in front of Kit’s chair and then, obviously, he moved so this picture was taken, and it looked like it was in my seat. But I wasn’t there, either. It was Kit. It was 100 percent Kit.”

Yet, the mystery remained unsolved. But on last night’s The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, Clarke put the questions to rest for good.

“Here’s the truth: We had a party before the Emmys recently and Conleth [Hill], who plays Varys—who’s sitting next to me in that scene—he pulls me aside and he’s like, ‘Emilia, I have got to tell you something, love. The coffee cup was mine,’” she said.

“It was his! It was Conleth’s coffee cup! He said so,” she continued. “He said, ‘I think it was. I am sorry, darling. I didn’t want to say anything because it seemed the heat was very much on you.’”

Watch Clarke explain this for yourself, below:

There you have it, everyone. I’d still probably blame it on Bran, but that’s just me.

Nike Released an Incredible Commercial After the U.S. Women's Team's World Cup Win

Following the U.S. Women’s National Team’s beautiful victory over the Netherlands in Sunday (July 7)’s World Cup final, Nike released a one-minute ad that pays tribute to the soccer champions while touting a message of empowerment for women and girls in sports.

The commercial is made up of images of athletes like Alex Morgan, Alyssa Naeher, and Tobin Heath, who just helped the U.S. cinch its fourth women’s World Cup win in a row. The ad features a single voice leading a crowd in the well-known “I Believe That We Will Win” sporting chant. However, the narration starts to trail into a different direction and settles into a powerful affirmation about just how historic the current team is—and how they’ve been working to change the course of history for other women.

“I believe that we will be four-time champions and keep winning until we not only become the best female soccer team, but the best soccer team in the world,” the voiceover declares. “I believe that we will be four-time champions and keep winning until we not only become the best female soccer team, but the best soccer team in the world, and that a whole generation of girls and boys will go out and play and say things like, ‘I want to be like Megan Rapinoe when I grow up,’ and that they’ll be inspired to talk and win and stand up for themselves.”

The ad coincides with not just the women’s impressive victory but also with the fight the team has led for equal pay. Several members of the team first filed a complaint with the Equal Opportunity Employment Commission in 2016, pointing out that they were paid less than their male counterparts on the U.S. Men’s National Team (who had consistently lost games at the time).

Although they signed a collective bargaining agreement that helped boost how much they made, the athletes have continued striving for a more equitable paycheck. In 2019, they officially sued the U.S. Soccer Federation and accused the institution of gender discrimination.

While any form of corporate feminism deserves critical inspection (especially as Nike deals with claims of pregnancy discrimination), the company’s ad does nod to the team’s equal pay lawsuit, and a quote at the end reflects the message that the women’s team has been pushing this entire time as they try to change massive institutional gender disparities.

“I believe that we will make our voices heard, and TV shows will be talking about us every single day and not just once every four years… And that we will keep fighting not just to make history, but to change it forever,” the ad continues. “This team wins. Everyone wins.”

The U.S. Women's National Soccer Team Just Won the World Cup, and Twitter's Losing It

The dynasty is strong. On Sunday, July 7, the U.S. Women’s National Team took home the FIFA Women’s World Cup—its fourth ever—after a 2-0 victory against the Netherlands in Lyon, France. Not only did the women of the USWNT clench back to back championships, they set a new record for most goals scored in a single world cup. It’s official: the women of the USWNT are legends.

From the very first game, the team showed up, sweeping the rankings as they followed their 2015 World Cup win in Canada. The Netherlands started out the game strong—as the New York Times points out, they were the only team the U.S. went up against during the tournament that were able to keep the USWNT from scoring in the first half of the game.

Things changed in the second half, with Megan Rapinoe—the oldest player to score in a World Cup final at 34 years old—scoring the first goal in the match with a penalty kick. Rose Lavelle sealed the win with a second goal for the team.

The win is resonating with fans around the world—especially on Twitter.

Along with the GOAT shoutouts, fans on Twitter are also calling out the issue of equal pay: In the last World Cup cycle, the men’s tournament winners took home 17.5 times more than the US women in 2015.

A lawsuit surrounding the team’s pay discrepancy is ongoing, but it’s clear these women are champions—and should be paid like it.

Alex Morgan Lit Up the Internet with Her Tea-Sipping Celebration During the World Cup Semifinals

Soccer star Alex Morgan had a very happy 30th birthday yesterday (July 2).

Morgan and the U.S. Women’s National Team defeated England in their semifinal match and will move on to play the winner of today’s matchup between Sweden and the Netherlands on Sunday (July 7). During the 31st minute of the first half, Morgan scored a goal putting the U.S. ahead 2-1, which ended up being the final score.

But it was her epic celebration that still has everyone talking today. After her goal, Morgan headed toward the sideline and mimicked sipping a cup of tea, complete with an extended pinky finger. Of course, tea is basically the national beverage in the U.K., so the message was pretty clear.

I, for one, thought it was brilliant—as did many others on social media, where “tea” connotes much more than just a drink.

“THAT ONE PLAYER FROM ENGLAND DID THE GOGGLES AND ALEX MORGAN WAS LIKE “OH OKAY WE’RE TALKING SHIT NOW” AND THEN SCORED A GOAL AND TOOK A SIP OF TEA HAHAHAHAHAHAHA,” writer Shea Serrano tweeted. And the USWNT’s official Twitter handle got in on the action too, writing, “No. 13 on her birthday. In honor of those 13 colonies. That’s. The. Tea ?????? Go on, @alexmorgan13, what a birthday!”

Because it happened so close to Independence Day, the colonial and Boston Tea Party references were flying around, as well.

Of course, not everyone was as pleased. The USWNT has already been accused of being too “cocky,” which I find to be nonsense, especially as they keep backing it up with incredible play on the field. And as many have pointed out, would we be making such comments about a men’s team? Though some Brits had a good sense of humor about it. “Oh, come on @alexmorgan13 – if you’re going to troll us you could at least dunk a biscuit in that tea. #doitproperly,” one wrote.

Megan Rapinoe Won’t Visit the White House if the U.S. Women’s Soccer Team Wins the World Cup

UPDATE:

On Friday evening (June 29), following the U.S. Women’s soccer team’s victory over France in the FIFA Women’s World Cup quarterfinals, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez invited U.S. co-captain Megan Rapinoe and her fellow teammates to the House of Representatives for a tour. “It may not be the White House, but we’d be happy to welcome @mPinoe & the entire #USWMNT for a tour of the House of Representatives anytime they’d like. ??,” Ocasio-Cortez tweeted.

And it looks like the team is down: “Consider it done @AOC,” Rapinoe responded, adding a celebratory emoji.

Original Story

The U.S. Women’s soccer team is currently battling it out in the FIFA Women’s World Cup. The team just made it to the quarterfinals, but their success in the tournament wasn’t what made headlines on Wednesday (June 26); instead a social media frenzy exploded around co-captain Megan Rapinoe’s recent comments.

When asked whether she was excited to go to the White House (if the team does indeed take the tournament) by a reporter from the outlet Eight by Eight, she responded, “I’m not going to the fucking White House.” She then added, “We’re not gonna be invited…. I doubt it.”

For context, Rapinoe’s reaction is in keeping with her past political statements. She’s been an outspoken critic of President Trump and was one of the first white players to join Colin Kaepernick and other footballers in taking a knee during the national anthem back in 2016. Rapinoe is also part of her team’s discrimination lawsuit against U.S. Soccer.

Later on Wednesday morning, Trump responded to Rapinoe’s comments in a series of three tweets. “Women’s soccer player, @mPinoe, just stated that she is ‘not going to the F…ing White House if we win.’ Other than the NBA, which now refuses to call owners, owners (please explain that I just got Criminal Justice Reform passed, Black unemployment is at the lowest level…in our Country’s history, and the poverty index is also best number EVER), leagues and teams love coming to the White House. I am a big fan of the American Team, and Women’s Soccer, but Megan should WIN first before she TALKS! Finish the job! We haven’t yet….invited Megan or the team, but I am now inviting the TEAM, win or lose. Megan should never disrespect our Country, the White House, or our Flag, especially since so much has been done for her & the team. Be proud of the Flag that you wear. The USA is doing GREAT!”

While Rapinoe has yet to speak out about Trump’s tweets, many others have taken to social media about his remarks. Adam Serwer, a staff writer at The Atlantic, wrote, “Trump is now going after Megan Rapinoe because the ‘f**k your feelings’ president flips out when members of groups targeted by his policies criticize him rather than knowing their place. I might add that for all the thoroughly insincere ‘free speech’ rhetoric from his supporters, Trump most frequently deploys his authority as head of state to chill criticism of himself. Like it’s not even close.”

Journalist Jemele Hill also came out in support of Rapinoe. “So as I’ve said previously about @mPinoe: Given this administration’s attitude toward the LGBTQ community (which they’ve enacted into policy), how do people not understand why she is upset,” Hill tweeted.

But some applauded Trump for inviting the team to the White House in the midst of his tweets. “Megan Rapinoe insults the president and the president still invites the US Women’s Soccer team to the White House win or lose after the World Cup. This is a big win for Trump. He makes Rapinoe look small here,” wrote Fox Sports Radio host Clay Travis.

Rapinoe isn’t the first athlete to decline an invitation to visit Trump’s White House. Last year, after the Golden State Warriors won the NBA title, the team opted out of meeting with the president.

The USWNT Score Just Broke the Record for Biggest Win in World Cup History

When the U.S. Women’s National Team comes to play they mean business—in their 2019 World Cup debut today they not only crushed the competition, they broke the record for biggest World Cup win ever with a USWNT score against Thailand of 13-0. Remember this moment: the Women’s National team just made sports history—again.

The USWNT is the highest ranked women’s soccer team in the world. They already have three World Cup titles under their belt and, despite the fact that women’s soccer has become more competitive than ever, they’re confident they’ll clinch a fourth title this summer in France. “This team has always found a way to win no matter what the circumstances,” forward Carli Lloyd, told Glamour in an interview last month. “We step out onto the field and we give it our all. We all come together and we find a way to lift that trophy.”

Odds are looking pretty damn good after their first match of the 2019 World Cup. For 90 minutes on the field, the women of the U.S. National Team were relentless, pummeling Thailand with goal after goal—five of which came in the last 11 minutes of the game. The 13-0 win against Thailand was the biggest win in the history of the World Cup—men’s or women’s, according to CBS Sports.

The overall score wasn’t even the only record-setting moment of the match: co-captain Alex Morgan scored five goals, tying the Women’s World Cup record for goals scored by a player in a single game. Rose Lavelle, Lindsey Horan, Sam Mewis, Megan Rapinoe, Mallory Pugh and Carli Lloyd also scored, sealing the record-breaking victory.

The win prompted reactions from people on Twitter—including Senator and democratic presidential candidate Kirsten Gillibrand—who referenced the sexism the team has faced.

The USWNT plays their next match against Chile this Sunday, June 16 and they’ve already made it clear: the USWNT is here to bring home their fourth World Cup title.
