Alex Morgan Lit Up the Internet with Her Tea-Sipping Celebration During the World Cup Semifinals


Soccer star Alex Morgan had a very happy 30th birthday yesterday (July 2).

Morgan and the U.S. Women’s National Team defeated England in their semifinal match and will move on to play the winner of today’s matchup between Sweden and the Netherlands on Sunday (July 7). During the 31st minute of the first half, Morgan scored a goal putting the U.S. ahead 2-1, which ended up being the final score.

But it was her epic celebration that still has everyone talking today. After her goal, Morgan headed toward the sideline and mimicked sipping a cup of tea, complete with an extended pinky finger. Of course, tea is basically the national beverage in the U.K., so the message was pretty clear.

I, for one, thought it was brilliant—as did many others on social media, where “tea” connotes much more than just a drink.

“THAT ONE PLAYER FROM ENGLAND DID THE GOGGLES AND ALEX MORGAN WAS LIKE “OH OKAY WE’RE TALKING SHIT NOW” AND THEN SCORED A GOAL AND TOOK A SIP OF TEA HAHAHAHAHAHAHA,” writer Shea Serrano tweeted. And the USWNT’s official Twitter handle got in on the action too, writing, “No. 13 on her birthday. In honor of those 13 colonies. That’s. The. Tea ?????? Go on, @alexmorgan13, what a birthday!”

Because it happened so close to Independence Day, the colonial and Boston Tea Party references were flying around, as well.

Of course, not everyone was as pleased. The USWNT has already been accused of being too “cocky,” which I find to be nonsense, especially as they keep backing it up with incredible play on the field. And as many have pointed out, would we be making such comments about a men’s team? Though some Brits had a good sense of humor about it. “Oh, come on @alexmorgan13 – if you’re going to troll us you could at least dunk a biscuit in that tea. #doitproperly,” one wrote.

Taylor Swift Literally Lit the 2018 American Music Awards Stage on Fire


Taylor Swift may have done something bad—but watching her do it felt so good. The singer, who just wrapped the U.S. leg of her Reputation tour, opened the 2018 American Music Awards with a very badass performance of her song “I Did Something Bad.”

In a long-sleeved, sparkly bodysuit and thigh-high black boots, and accompanied by a troupe of dancers, the singer lit up the AMAs stage—but she had some help. Her performance was enhanced with stunning pyrotechnics as she belted out the track’s dance-y chorus. They are burning all the witches, even if you aren’t one after all.

The entire performance was punctuated by the appearance of a giant cobra rising out of the set behind her, a nod to the reptilian motif that has characterized the entire Reputation era. This latest performance marks Swift’s first time performing at an awards show since the release of her latest album. Her last awards show performance was over two years ago at the Grammys in 2016. Meanwhile, she hasn’t hit the stage for a song at the American Music Awards since 2014.

But this isn’t the only time Swift snagged the spotlight this week. She made headlines for posting an unprecedented political statement to Instagram on Sunday, in which she endorsed Democrats Phil Bredesen for Senate and Jim Cooper for House of Representatives in the upcoming midterm elections in the state of Tennessee. She ended her statement by encouraging her fans to educate themselves about the upcoming election and make their own voices heard by voting. “Please, please educate yourself on the candidates running in your state and vote based on who most closely represents your values. For a lot of us, we may never find a candidate or party with whom we agree 100% on every issue, but we have to vote anyway.”

One day later, her comments appear to have had a significant impact on voter registration. But the post also prompted several harsh responses from several conservatives, including President Donald Trump, who declared that he now likes her music “25% less.”

We, on the other hand, would watch this performance over and over and over again if we could.

It’s possible we’re jumping the gun by saying this, but based on the limited information we have, it looks like Kufrin’s Bachelorette season might be the most lit yet. Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas' Engagement Party Was L-I-T


Sophie Turner, of Game of Thrones, and Joe Jonas, of DNCE and formerly of a certain eponymous late-2000s boy band composed of brothers, are engaged. The two announced they’d be getting hitched mid-October after a year-ish of dating—marking the commitment with a stunning pear-shaped ring for her. On Saturday night, they had a party at Mamo in New York City to celebrate the wedding (date still TBD, y’all).

Honestly? The soiree for Jophie—we cannot handle this portmanteau; it is too good—looked incredible. We just know our invitations got lost in the mail. First, the guest list was great: the full pack of Jonas brothers, plus Ashley Graham, Ansel Elgort and Spider-Man star Tom Holland. There was an impromptu concert from Joe, who sang “Cake by the Ocean,” a friend’s rendition of “I Would Do Anything for Love,” and sparklers for toasting that soon became fake swords.

For further proof, all you have to do is look at the evidence. Instagram evidence, that is. And there is plenty of it.
