Michelle Obama Wore Her Natural Curls on the Cover of *Essence*

You could argue that Michelle Obama has been on a roll her whole life, but this past year has been an especially exceptional one for her. After eight years of holding up to the constant pressure of the White House, we’ve seen the former First Lady finally be able to let down her hair—so to speak.

She danced with Tina Knowles at Jay and Bey’s OTRII concert in Paris, celebrated 26 years of marriage with America’s Coolest Dad, and now she’s on a massive press tour to celebrate her highly-anticipated memoir Becoming. Along with her 12-city book tour (in which she’s selling out arenas and casually getting interviewed by Oprah Winfrey, MObama also took the time to shoot a few magazine covers. Her latest? A stunning shot on the cover of Essence that celebrated her natural curls in their glory.

Although Mrs. Obama has graced the covers of magazines a countless number of times (including Glamour), this is the first time she’s worn something other than her signature waves—and I’m here for every moment of it.

During her time in the White House, the former FLOTUS didn’t discuss her hair all too much, but she didn’t have to. Black women got it. It’s something every professional women of color has faced—just, you know, not on such a national scale. Since her departure, though, she’s slowly been opening up about the experience and how she had to develop “a hair strategy” during her time in the spotlight.

“Well, you know, the first thing you’ve gotta worry about is how to keep it healthy,” she shared during an interview on the 2 Dope Queens podcast. “My whole goal was I want to end this with hair on my head. And so now you’ve got to think about how do you do that, you know? What are you doing? And are you swimming? Are you working out? But this wasn’t just a first lady journey. This is a black professional women’s journey.”

She also said the strategy was so involved, that she’s “sure a lot of white women are sitting over there going, ‘Man, I didn’t know all that was going on.'”

It’s refreshing to see her curls looking so hydrated, full of life, and the most important of all: naturally textured. She’s worn it natural before, which was also met with much fan fare. And her hairstylist Johnny Wright actually revealed back in 2015 that she’s been completely natural for years now—meaning there were no chemicals like relaxers or texturizers used to straighten her hair.

But as a fellow black girl from the South Side of Chicago, every sighting of her curls gives me hope. It’s still difficult for black women to wear our hair the way it grows naturally from our scalp—Mrs. Obama is proof of that. Each time a powerful black woman pushes back, though, stereotypes or media criticism be damned, it tells the rest of us that our hair is magical. And that it can be “professional.”

Sure, the natural hair movement has been around for awhile and some might consider it taboo (or policing) to keep bringing attention to these instances. I hope that soon we won’t have to celebrate a moment when a prominent black women wears her hair in it’s natural state. But until then, I’mma be here to point it out and cheer it on every chance that I get. And if these tweets are any indication, I’m surely not alone.

Lady Gaga Wore Less Than $50 Worth of Makeup on Her 'Vogue' Cover

Lady Gaga, our lady of prosthetic cheekbones and heels while hiking, has solidified a new phase of her style evolution. The actress and singer’s Vogue cover went live today, featuring a stripped-down, fresh, and dewy side of Gaga. The past few months have seen her step largely away from the theatrical roots that she came up with, so the look’s not necessarily new—since Joanne debuted, Gaga has increasingly let her raw self into the spotlight. Still, the Vogue cover is the most she’s committed to her bare-bones vibe yet. And as her fans can attest, no one goes for it like Gaga.

Even better? Where tons of Gaga’s looks clock in at triple dollar-sign level prices, this one came at a refreshingly low cost. As in, under $50 in all: According to Vogue, Gaga’s longtime makeup artist, Sarah Tanno, created Gaga’s light-touch look using L’Oréal Paris True Match Super-Blendable Makeup and Infallible Longwear Blush Shaping Stick in Sexy-Flush. The slightly glossy, balmy texture on her eyes came from L’Oréal Paris Infallible Paints Metallics Eye Shadow in 400 Rose Chrome, while the look’s centerpiece, her strong, dark brows, came from the brand’s Brow Stylist Definer in Brunette. Colour Riche Shine Lipstick in Shining Peach finished her lips with a gentle sheen.

As our entertainment writer Chris Rosa put it: a bargain beauty shopper is born!

If you’re wondering where this all came from, Gaga tells Vogue that she’s welcomed a “galaxy of change” over the past decade, so fronting Vogue‘s October issue with barely any makeup makes sense (even as we’re still trying to wrap our heads around it). Gaga and Tanno usually use Marc Jacobs cosmetics—Tanno is a Global Artistry Ambassador for the brand—so this is an unusually accessible change of pace for the duo. But rumors have also flown about Gaga launching a brand of her own (named HAUS Beauty, because of course), and this would’ve been a prime time to whip it out. So maybe all bets are off for Vogue, or this is a new era of Gaga that’s here to stay.

Speaking to shedding some of her larger-than-life looks, Gaga says, “For me, fashion and art and music have always been a form of armor. I just kept creating more and more fantasies to escape into, new skins to shed. And every time I shed a skin, it was like taking a shower when you’re dirty: getting rid of, washing off, shedding all of the bad, and becoming something new.”

She added: “I just remember feeling so irritated at the thought that I had to conform to being ‘normal,’ or less of whatever I was already born as. And so I took such radical enjoyment in expressing who I am in the most grandiose of ways. It was sort of like a very polite ‘Fuck off.’ It was never about looking perfect—it was always about just being myself. And I think that’s what it’s always been about for my fans, too. It was a form of protection, and a secret—like a wink from afar. I’m a monster, and you’re a monster too.”

Ariana Grande Sang a Beautiful Cover of 'Natural Woman' at Aretha Franklin's Funeral

Aretha Franklin’s funeral took place in Detroit on Friday, August 31, and several celebrities and notable figures were in attendance. One of those people was Ariana Grande, who honored the Queen of Soul during the service by singing a cover of her hit song “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman.”

The Sweetener singer took the stage roughly halfway through the funeral, wearing a black dress and her signature high ponytail. (Her fiancé, Pete Davidson, was also in attendance.) Her rendition of “Natural Woman” was stunning, of course; her vocals were soft and lovely, and she hit the difficult notes in the song with style and aplomb. The performance was received by a hearty applause from the thousands of people in attendance, including many of Franklin’s direct family members.

Watch the performance for yourself, below:

Franklin’s funeral has been intensely covered all day. Photographers snapped pictures of Davidson and Grande first arriving to the service. The couple was affectionately holding hands in one of the shots.

They also took time to chat with Hillary and Bill Clinton, who both attended Franklin’s service, as well.

Other public figures who were present for the service included Gladys Knight, Rev. Al Sharpton, and Jennifer Hudson.

This isn’t the first time Grande’s paid homage to Franklin. She sang “Natural Woman” on August 16 (the day Franklin passed away) while appearing on The Tonight Show.

“We sang at the White House and she was so sweet and she was like so cute and I was like, ‘how are you a real person?’,” Grande said on The Tonight Show about meeting Franklin. “It’s an honor to have met her and we are going to celebrate her.”

It Sure Looks Like Lip Kit Queen Kylie Jenner Went Makeup-Free on This *Vogue* Cover

Kylie Jenner just turned 21, and celebrated not only with a fully booked weekend of festivities but also with a Vogue cover, as you do. Jenner is also a billionaireearning in two hours what most Americans make in a year—having created a virtual empire from her lip kits, which have blossomed into full-on makeup collections. Makeup has always been a part of the Kardashian look, and Jenner is one of the sisters who leans into it the most: The women in the family tend to wield contoured faces, feathery lashes, and, especially in Jenner’s case, full lips (she’s recently gotten rid of her lip filler, however).

So when the September cover of Vogue Australia was revealed, it was a big surprise that Jenner’s look wasn’t all strobing and baking and contouring—no judgement, just par for the course with the KarJenners. Instead, Jenner looked…almost makeup-free?

She’s photographed with an artfully wavy lob and a stripped-down version of the look we normally see from her: There might be a bit of blush and lipstick (lip gloss, even) going on—we doubt it’s totally, 100-percent free of makeup—but it’s a relative smidgen.

Her makeup artist also ‘grammed about the cover, implying that the look came down to some (incredible) moisturizer: “This is So Major!! @vogueaustralia I would love to Say Makeup by me! but its Really Moisturizer by Ariel?❤️ i feel beyond blessed to be apart of this moment with you @kyliejenner ❤️#makeupbyariel #kyliejenner”

We’ve seen more and more pared-down looks on magazine-covering celebs lately: Ariana Grande let her freckles show on the July cover of British Vogue; Christina Aguilera did the same for Paper earlier this year. These covers are symbolic of seeing these women—all of whom were on the verge of a major change (a new album for Aguilera, a new album plus an engagement for Grande)—in new lights.

Jenner’s life, of course, has been full of milestones lately: Besides the whole billionaire thing, she’s also setting into to being a mom—and wearing hair extensions worth $8,000 for her 21st-birthday look. Whatever’s coming next, it certainly seems like she’s ready for it.

Beyoncé and Rihanna Fans Are Actually Feuding Over Which 'Vogue' Cover Is Better

The September issue of Vogue is typically the most talked about of the year, and this time it featured not one but two icons on the cover: Beyoncé, for American Vogue, and Rihanna for British Vogue. On Beyoncé’s U.S.-based cover, the singer stuns in a white Victorian-esque prairie dress in front of a white sheet, her smize in full effect. Meanwhile, Rihanna sports dainty brows and orange gloves on her cover as she casually stares into every British Vogue reader’s soul. Rihanna and Bey are each brilliant and talented, but wait: What’s that? They’re both wearing flower crowns on their Vogue covers! The horror!

Obviously, I kid: Bey and Rih are both more than allowed to wear flower crowns at the same time and serve lewks. It appears, however, as if certain segments of their fandoms aren’t too happy the singers are rocking similar vibes. As first reported by BuzzFeed, a few Beyoncé and Rihanna fans are currently at war over which star was the first to wear a flower crown. “Thanks for the Rihanna concept,” one fan replied to Vogue‘s tweet of Beyoncé’s cover, while another wrote, “Hmmm seems a bit like @BritishVogue cover with Rihanna to me?” More fans soon came out of the woodwork with receipts, comebacks, and ad hominem attacks.

Thankfully, the fans pitting Beyoncé and Rihanna against each other are in the minority. There are plenty more Twitter commentators who jumped in and declared that both women look terrific on their covers, and casually revived flower crowns in the process. We couldn’t agree more.

Gigi Hadid Looks… Quite Different In Her Latest *Love* Magazine Cover

Seeing Gigi Hadid on the cover of a fashion magazine isn’t exactly surprising, but her latest shoot can definitely be characterized as… memorable.

The 23-year-old model fronts Love magazine’s 10th anniversary issue. Though, you wouldn’t know it if it weren’t for the cover line identifying Hadid as the model underneath what’s perhaps the most terrifying bunny mask ever. Donnie Darko could never.

“The golden hare in the golden hour,” wrote Love alongside an Instagram photo revealing its latest cover star. “@gigihadid as you’ve never seen her before.” (You’ve got that right, Love.)

Hadid is photographed in a pink dress, her long hair in waves… and a teeth-baring bunny face that is made to feel that much creepier thanks to the adorable puppy by her side.

In a second Love cover, Gigi’s face actually makes an appearance, with a Quailman-style belt-as-headband set of (far less terrifying) bunny ears.

“BUNNY LOVE ?? Played dress-up for @thelovemagazine’s 10th birthday cover ?????☁️,” Hadid captioned a photo of the cover on her Instagram account.

This isn’t the first time Hadid has made headlines for her work with Love: In 2016, she appeared in the magazine’s iconic “Advent Calender” wearing a fishnet bikini; in 2017, she celebrated the same series by showing off her boxing and volleyball skills. Whatever your feelings on this particular shoot, you know that whenever the model links up with Love, the result certainly won’t be boring.
