How Aging Makes Me Feel More Beautiful

Every time I see my mom, she tells me, “Dye your hair. You look like an aging hippie.”

I’m 51 and while I fear I’m aging out of a lot of things—the ability to run miles and miles without getting injured, for one—I’m not aging out of looks. There’s a photograph of the writer Susan Sontag taken at 58. She’s lying back, holding her elbow up with her hand resting on her head. Sontag was known for her political theories, but also for the thick swath of gray hair right in front, while the rest was dark brown. In the photo, you can see the gray and also the loosening of the skin under her eyes. She looks strong and calm. The picture was taken by Annie Leibovitz, who was her lover.

My friend Allison is also 51. In high school, she was on the soccer team and the dance drill team. She was fit and blond and had her pick of the boys. She’s still fit and blond, but on top of her monthly touchups at $120 each, she spends $300 and three hours every month to upkeep her roots. She’s single now and complains that pickings are slim.

“When I was young, I walked into a room and people noticed,” she says. “Not anymore.”

I never walked into a room that way. If I wanted attention—and I did—I had to work a lot harder. I had to say something funny, so I got good at being a clown.

I was never pretty. My mom would disagree, but they had mirrors in high school. I saw my puffy cheeks, puffy body, and puffy hair. I wasn’t fat, but I felt bulky and spent way too much time switching out my jeans for different jeans before I left the house in the morning. They had mirrors in college too. When I could see I wasn’t one of the pretty girls, I opted out and went for ugly. I wore black rimmed glasses way too big for my face. I wore men’s boxers, T-shirts, and suit vests. I was funny and young, so I could find men and women to sleep with, but beauty wasn’t my social capital.

My best friend in college, Meredith, another sunny blond, was invited to practically every fraternity formal. Once, without showering or putting on makeup, Meredith threw on a white flapper dress and went to a formal. I remember when one of her dates stopped us at a party. He said, “Mere, your friend is the wackiest girl in America.”

I wish looks didn’t matter to me then, when I pretended not to care. I wish looks didn’t matter to me now, when I know other things matter more. But they do.

Now, I look older. On Mother’s Day, my wife, Vicky, and I went to dinner. Vicky is two months older than I am. We sat side-by-side in the booth, holding hands. We ordered a beer to share. The waiter came to our table with the beer and poured two glasses, then slid the glass with slightly more beer to me and said, “The mother gets more.”

Vicky laughed and said, “Oh, no, no, that’s crazy. We’re partners.”

The waiter made no indication that what he said might be offensive. He went on to explain that I looked more mature.

Vicky said, “It’s the hair.”

“No,” he said. “It’s the face.”

The first time this happened, we were probably 42. A woman, stumbling drunk at a food and wine festival, asked if Vicky was my daughter. I wanted to throw her mojito in her face. A few years later in Chile, our driver asked Vicky if she’d have a drink with him. She told him we were together, and he said he thought I was her mother.

Selena Gomez Threw Her Best Friend the Most Beautiful Bridal Shower

No matter how famous she gets—and she is, after all, a pop star and the former most-followed person on Instagram for two years running—Selena Gomez still makes the time to keep it real and kick back with some of her pre-fame best friends. Gomez makes trips back to Texas to catch up with the girls, whether it’s to invite them all to her pasta-themed birthday party on a yacht or get that ultimate signifier of a BFF bond: matching squad tattoos. And for her latest trip, over the weekend, she went all out for a very good reason. Gomez apparently helped throw Courtney Barry, one of her besties, a beautiful shower that was—luckily for us—documented on social media. The bride-to-be wrote on her own Instagram that “a few of my perfect girls threw me a perfect shower” along with a collage of Polaroid photos from the event where fans quickly spotted Gomez in a gorgeous red dress.

Also, wow, how gorgeous does the party look?

Fan accounts nabbed more footage from posts by other, less-famous guests at the shower.

To whoever decided on the ring pop flavors, we say, “Well done.”

Gomez and Barry go way back and have often posted about their squad’s escapades on social media.

And back to that one time they got tattoos: Gomez took the moment to expand on why exactly she and Barry will always be tight. “…My actual #1 @courtneyjbarry you are an incredible woman. The way you handle life’s most confusing moments is indescribable and graceful” she wrote. “You are moved by the littlest stories to the most heartbreaking ones, you will give someone your perfume if they say you smell nice, you are freaking hilarious and always stand firm in your faith, a loving sister, an amazing friend and a beautiful daughter. You are the definition of FEARFULLY and WONDERFULLY made baby! #1

We have a feeling this won’t be the last of the wedding festivities Gomez makes time for—and we can’t wait to see the pics.

This Glass Highlighter Gives You Beautiful Glass Skin

We’ve played out most of the ways highlighter can be fresh. Blue, gold, liquid, loose powder—each new iteration that landed in stores, I was happy to welcome into my makeup bag with open arms. Even the avant-garde, out-there ones, like Fenty’s pigmented silver Diamond Ball highlighter, found their way onto my face. And then, right when I didn’t think there was anything out there that could surprise me, what looked like an empty pan came into my life, and I felt a love that was brand new.

My interest was piqued by Instagram (isn’t that always the case). I was scrolling along when I saw it: Models with skin so smooth, poreless, and reflective that they looked like an ad for “glass skin,” the kind you allegedly get from a meticulous, 10-step Korean skin care routine. The models’ skin glowed as they posed for the videos, their skin bouncing off light with the kind of sheen you usually only see in well-lit studios. They probably were, but still—I wanted that product on my face.

Just recently launched, Danessa Myricks’ Dew Wet Balm was the glass-skin maker behind the shots I’d spotted on Instagram, but in person, it looks like you’ve received a starkly empty metal pan. Flip the top open, and the balm reflects its presence. It’s a clear, hybrid highlighter and moisturizing balm that gets its power from jojoba oil and Vitamin E.

Rub a finger in it and pat it on your cheekbone, and your skin takes on this subtle, glassy quality. It’s not totally unprecedented. Aquaphor is basically a thicker version of the same product. But if you’re not trying to reach quite that level of moist, the Wet Balm gives you the glowy look without the sticky finish, while reading more dewy than a shimmery highlighter. There are three shades: pearly Morning Dew, lightly copper Hot Water, and Clear. If you want glass skin without the intensive upkeep, it doesn’t get easier.

Ariana Grande Sang a Beautiful Cover of 'Natural Woman' at Aretha Franklin's Funeral

Aretha Franklin’s funeral took place in Detroit on Friday, August 31, and several celebrities and notable figures were in attendance. One of those people was Ariana Grande, who honored the Queen of Soul during the service by singing a cover of her hit song “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman.”

The Sweetener singer took the stage roughly halfway through the funeral, wearing a black dress and her signature high ponytail. (Her fiancé, Pete Davidson, was also in attendance.) Her rendition of “Natural Woman” was stunning, of course; her vocals were soft and lovely, and she hit the difficult notes in the song with style and aplomb. The performance was received by a hearty applause from the thousands of people in attendance, including many of Franklin’s direct family members.

Watch the performance for yourself, below:

Franklin’s funeral has been intensely covered all day. Photographers snapped pictures of Davidson and Grande first arriving to the service. The couple was affectionately holding hands in one of the shots.

They also took time to chat with Hillary and Bill Clinton, who both attended Franklin’s service, as well.

Other public figures who were present for the service included Gladys Knight, Rev. Al Sharpton, and Jennifer Hudson.

This isn’t the first time Grande’s paid homage to Franklin. She sang “Natural Woman” on August 16 (the day Franklin passed away) while appearing on The Tonight Show.

“We sang at the White House and she was so sweet and she was like so cute and I was like, ‘how are you a real person?’,” Grande said on The Tonight Show about meeting Franklin. “It’s an honor to have met her and we are going to celebrate her.”
