How to Make Your Own Riverdale Halloween Costume Look(s)


According to a joint report published by Lyst and Pinterest, Riverdale, broadly, is ranked #2 on a list of the 10 most popular Halloween costumes for 2018, based on data from both platforms. This isn’t a particularly surprising revelation—the show’s audience is massive (and devoted.) But also, and perhaps even more importantly, the look is so easy to recreate. Each character has a clear sartorial signifier: Betty Cooper with her sweaters and Peter Pan collars, Archie Andrews with his letterman jacket, Jughead Jones with his beanie, Veronica Lodge with her pearls… What’s more, the modern-day interpretation of the gang (and their wardrobe) includes plenty of familiar trends and silhouettes, from chokers to high-low skirts, so you likely have pieces similar to what modern-day Riverdale High students might wear—which makes these costumes feel less… well, costume-y.

Kim Kardashian Apologizes for Her Aaliyah Halloween Costume: 'We Don't See Color in My Home'


To say Kim Kardashian West went all out for Halloween weekend 2017 would be an understatement.

The reality superstar dressed up in not one, not two, but three separate costumes, each paying homage to some of music’s greatest female icons. Her looks included tributes to Cher, Madonna, and, most controversially, the late R&B singer Aaliyah.

Specifically, Kim wore Aaliyah’s exact outfit from her “Try Again” music video—including the singer’s famous sequin choker and statement grey eye makeup. And while yes, Kim’s outfit was certainly on point in terms of being an exact replica, many pointed out on social media that it was veering dangerously close to cultural appropriation.

“Legend or not Aaliyah is a Black woman and you’re not. It’s offensive and you shouldn’t push this limit, but OK,” one user, for example, tweeted at Kim.

Today, Kim released a statement defending why she made the decision to dress as Aaliyah and apologizing to fans who may have been offended by her costume choice. As she wrote on her website, “When I was deciding what I wanted to be for Halloween this year, I had a lot of ideas that I narrowed down to musical icons and my second costume was Aaliyah. The look was inspired by what she wore in her ‘Try Again’ music video.” Kim added, “Aaliyah was such an amazing singer, and she will forever be a music legend. I saw online that some people thought my costume was in poor taste, and I am truly sorry if that offended anyone.”

Kim noted that when she was choosing her costumes she didn’t think of it as dressing as a race or culture “but rather as a woman whom I will always admire.” She added, “I play every kind of genre of music in my home, and I like for my kids to be exposed to many different artists.”

“For me, it’s always about love and respect,” she continued. “I loved that Kourtney was Michael Jackson for one of her costumes and that my son was Axl Rose,” she said. “We don’t see color in my home. We were paying homage to people and artists we love and respect—it’s that simple!”

Kim Kardashian Faces Twitter Backlash for Her Aaliyah Halloween Costume


Kim Kardashian decided to spend Halloween this year paying tribute to some of music’s greatest divas. She kicked things off Friday night with her ’70s-era Cher costume. (Her friend, Jonathan Cheban, dressed as Cher’s ex and longtime musical partner, Sonny Bono.) On Sunday night, she and big sis Kourtney Kardashian went as Madonna and Michael Jackson circa the 1991 Academy Awards. Both looks were, naturally, glamorous as hell.

But it’s the costume Kim wore in between these two that has the Internet in a heated debate. The reality star decided to dress up as the late R&B singer Aaliyah for one of her events. She specifically mimicked the look from Aaliyah’s “Try Again” video: a glittery bikini top and pants, a sparkly choker, and pin-straight hair. She even copied Aaliyah’s smoky-eyed makeup look from the clip. Here’s the Snapchat Kim uploaded of her final costume:

The backlash for this outfit was almost immediate, with several people accusing Kim of cultural appropriation. “Legend or not Aaliyah is a Black woman and you’re not. It’s offensive and you shouldn’t push this limit, but OK,” one person tweeted at Kim. “It’s offensive because [Aaliyah] is dead and you can’t pay homage when you’re an Armenian just using her look as a costume. That’s the issue,” wrote another. Check out these responses, below:

But a few people defended Kim’s look, noting that she didn’t dress in Blackface or appropriate Black culture is any direct way: She just copied a music video outfit. “There’s nothing wrong with what she did or her pick. She just wanted to pay homage to her icons including Cher, Aaliyah, Madonna and etc.,” one person tweeted. “She dressed up as a musical artist. No Blackface, nothing offensive. Y’all love to hate and reach for nothing. Stop it. It’s Halloween,” wrote someone else. Here are those tweets:

Twitter Is Dragging Conservative Pundit Tomi Lahren for Wearing a Flag Costume for Halloween


Conservative political pundit Tomi Lahren is known for being outspoken about right-wing issues: We’ve seen her criticize government-funded subsidies for birth control (with little indication she knows how much it costs) and come out against allowing military members who are transgender to serve their country. Lately, she’s used her platform to criticize athletes who choose to take a knee when the national anthem is sung at their sporting events. In a monologue on Fox in September, Lahren said that those who chose to kneel to protest the oppression of people of color were doing it for the attention. As part of her argument, she cited the flag as a living symbol of what it means to be American and implied that those who kneel were unpatriotic.

With all this talk about the sacredness of the American flag, it’s not entirely surprising that Lahren faced a lot of backlash on Twitter when she stepped out on Halloween dressed in full flag gear. The criticism didn’t necessarily come from conservatives—whose comments were largely supportive—but liberals, who flagged (ha) her apparent hypocrisy.

In case it’s been a while since you were in the Scouts, the U.S. Code dealing with “respect for the flag” says that “No part of the flag should ever be used as a costume or athletic uniform.” (It also mentions that the flag shouldn’t be used for “printed or otherwise impressed on paper napkins or boxes or anything that is designed for temporary use and discard.” Granted, this is in a section dealing with advertising purposes, but Halloween costumes are nothing if not for temporary use.)

Conservative Twitter was very excited about seeing her wearing all sorts of flag regalia.

The president’s son even weighed in, typically tactfully and eloquently:

But others on Twitter came for it:

Jezebel really honed in with what honestly felt like the most important fashion take on the issue: “Tomi Lahren’s Fannypack Is a National Abomination.”

Lahren clapped back with some legal code that she apparently got by Googling “wearing the flag”:

When we did a quick check, we got a whole range of answers from different sources. Although her response makes some sense—yeah, it’s probably not great to turn an actual flag into a Halloween costume—the aforementioned section of the code does mention that it shouldn’t be printed on anything meant for temporary use, which would presumably include fabric used for a costume. I don’t know, though; I’m just a former high-school debater, not an actual legal expert.

So, like many sections of the law, it probably depends on how broadly or narrowly you read into it. If you feel strongly about it, you should definitely check with a lawyer well versed on flag law. Or, you know, find a less controversial Halloween costume.

Shay Mitchell Used YouTube Makeup Tutorials to DIY Her Last-Minute Halloween Costume


Some people really get into Halloween and plan their costume out months in advance. Others take a more last-minute approach, frantically Googling “easy Halloween costumes” two hours before they’re due to meet up with friends. Pretty Little Liars actress Shay Mitchell found herself squarely in the latter camp. Luckily, because it’s 2017, she knew exactly where to turn to find a quick, easy costume idea: YouTube makeup tutorials.

Given that it’s October, YouTube’s has been flooded with Halloween-themed makeup videos—and Mitchell is a huge fan of makeup, so this was pretty much a match made in heaven. She chronicled the saga of transforming herself into an undead bride on her Instagram story, and it’s so relatable.

“I don’t know how I’m doing this but I’m doing it,” Mitchell wrote over an image of her with pale skin and a black eye. “Thank you @youtube for all the tutorials lol.” Her story also included an image of the actress holding a bunch of black roses and showing off her finished look, which featured a forehead wound and some eerie blue contacts.

Mitchell was joined by her friend Cait Bailey, who dressed up as the undead groom to Mitchell’s bride. “Bride and groom aka last minute costumes,” Mitchell captioned the picture of the duo on Instagram. In it you can see Cait matched Mitchell’s forehead wound, and then added a chest wound next to her bowtie, which she layered over a sparkly chocker.

Mitchell isn’t the only celebrity who’s skilled with a makeup brush: Ariana Grande, Maisie Williams, and Jenna Dewan Tatum are among the famous faces who have been known to take the reins when it comes to their beauty looks.

They may not post their own makeup tutorials on YouTube, but you can still pick up plenty of the tips and tricks they’ve learned from working with professional makeup artists over the years. Bonus: those will stay relevant long after Halloween, too. Now that’s what we call a treat.
