Hailey Bieber Opened Up About the ‘Cruelty’ She Faces on Social Media


Hailey Bieber (née Baldwin) may be one of the most famous faces on Instagram but that doesn’t mean things are always rosy for her on the platform.

On Friday, the model took to Instagram to share a truly personal post where she got candid about how negative comments, messages, and bullying on social media affects her.

“I would say my most favorite part of existing is human connection. I absolutely love connecting with other people, I love finding common interests between me and others, hearing people’s story, I love laughing with others, and I love crying with others. I feel so very very deeply,” Bieber wrote in the caption of her Instagram post of a stunning blue sea. “My heart explodes with happiness when my friends and family are happy and my heart feels crushed when they are hurting and sad.”

She went on to explain to her 24 million followers that the reason she was sharing the lengthy message was “because I love to connect, I do my best to expose my heart which means I love freely and I empathize deeply, and because of that I also hurt very easily when I feel like people don’t see my heart and see me for who I am.”

The 23-year-old went on to say apps like Instagram and Twitter are “a breeding ground for cruelty towards each other, and because people don’t take the time to connect with each other on an honest level before they resort to hatred, it starts to damage what could be really beautiful human interaction and connection.”

Bieber added that she could sit there “all day” and pretend the messages don’t bother her, but, she noted, “NEWS FLASH: it hurts to be torn apart on the internet!!! It hurts to be compared to other human beings every single day, it hurts for people to jump to conclusions and make assumptions. It hurts to be called names, and to feel like you don’t measure up to a certain standard… the list goes on and on.”

’The Official History of Celebs Licking Each Other's Faces


Public licking pushes social boundaries. When Bella Thorne and model Tana Mongeau documented themselves giving each other what looks like full on annual dental cleanings in October 2017, they were essentially challenging onlookers. “Go ahead, find us gross,” they seemed to say. “You’re a part of this now.”

Bella Hadid and The Weeknd have also documented their licking sessions on Instagram, and as much as that sentence may make you want to plunge your head into an industrial blender, the pics are closer to adorable than pornographic. Same with Tristan Thompson and Khloe Kardashian, a couple that is famous for many things, not including cuteness. But a September 2018 Instagram video, in which he serenades her, then gently licks her mouth and nose, is oddly tender.

Kim Kardashian, too, has habitually shared images of herself lightly touching her tongue to Kanye West’s face. In 2016, she went so far as to lick him on the red carpet at the Met Gala.

Aggressively cutesy face licking runs in other celebrity families, too. On a December 2018 ski trip, Joe Jonas posted a pic in which Sophie Turner licked his cheek. On the same trip, Priyanka Chopra shared a pic of herself squirming away from Nick Jonas’ tongue. Sometimes, we don’t want to put “family” and “licking” in the same sentence, but celebrities don’t always give us that freedom!

Hollywood’s most prolific celebrity licker is no doubt Miley Cyrus, whose career is littered with instances of her licking people, objects, and the air. After spending the greater part of her career with her tongue outside her mouth, she licked her then-husband Liam Hemsworth at the 2019 Met Gala. Weeks later, they separated.

To be fair, her behavior wasn’t random—she also tried to lick Liam on the Avengers: Endgame red carpet, and once tweeted that she was asked to leave the set of the movie Hotel Transylvania after “buying Liam a penis cake for his birthday and licking it.” Miley transcends other celebrities, entering her own category of people who have lost jobs over licking incidents.

Other couples who differ on public licking politics have remained in wedlock—Elizabeth Chambers lurched away from her husband Armie Hammer’s tongue on the red carpet at the AFI fest in October 2017. He may have been inspired by his own work, having licked Julia Roberts’ face in a scene in Mirror, Mirror in 2012. Hammer is a stalwart licker–just one month after his AFI lick-attempt, he didn’t appear to flinch when Robert Pattinson’s tongue approached his face.

Hello Hope, My Old Friend: As Donald Trump Faces Impeachment and Elizabeth Warren Rises in the Polls, Can Democrats Learn to Hope Again


But last month, I registered a shift. In me. In the people I know. Even on Twitter. An odd thing has happened. For the first time since the presidential election, some of us have started to feel…hopeful?

The sensation is so novel, I didn’t recognize it at first. But it began with that old nemesis of mine—polls. After months of ambitious plans, hundreds of photo lines, and countless appearances, Elizabeth Warren surged ahead in them. At last a woman whose hard work seemed to be noted and appreciated. The first primaries are still months from now, but for a lot of women, Warren presents a chance to finish what Geraldine Ferraro, Margaret Chase Smith, and Shirley Chisholm started. For a lot of us, the fact that we’ve never had a female president still stings. Even prim-and-proper England had Margaret Thatcher. (Yes, I know.)

Sure, Clinton had her problems, but those issues paled compared to her opponent’s deficiencies; the harassment and assault allegations, his numerous bankruptcies, the grift. I’m not here to re-litigate 2016, but the stark fact was that one candidate was qualified and the other didn’t know who Fredrick Douglass was.

Then, the Ukraine news broke. As reports trickled out, we learned that Trump has been pushing Ukraine for dirt on Joe Biden. Even moderate Democrats backed impeachment proceedings. And in the time since, I have sometimes wondered: What would happen if we didn’t all get dark and doubtful again? What would happen if we decided to hold the Trump administration accountable for once? Stranger things have happened.

There’s an expression in politics that “Republicans fall in line and Democrats fall in love.” As much as I hate the idea, I think there’s some truth to it. But I’ve held off on following my heart. I’ve been burned, and it’s so much easier to just assume the worst than hope for the best. At least that’s how I felt until now.

For the next few weeks, the Trump administration will have to answer for their actions. And in the meantime, women continue to run rings around him. Harris is on the cover of TIME Magazine! Warren, with her focus on childcare and student debt, makes me feel warm inside! I can’t help it. I feel…almost optimistic.

This election will take place 13 or so months and several million news alerts from now. And I am not blind to the realities of our current moment. Abortion is on the chopping block. Immigrants rights’ have been trampled. Our president just asked China to interfere in our elections from the White House lawn. I’m not delusional, but I am hopeful. Because for the first time in a long time, some determined part of me feels like we’re at the beginning of something.

Judge Faces Suspension for Asking Woman in Sexual Assault Case If She 'Closed Her Legs'


New Jersey Superior Court Judge John F. Russo Jr. is facing suspension after he reportedly asked a woman seeking a restraining order if she tried to prevent her alleged sexual assault by closing her legs.

According to The New York Times, an advisory committee found that the displayed behavior that was “not only discourteous and inappropriate but also egregious given the potential for those questions to re-victimize the plaintiff.” Members collectively recommended a three-month suspension without pay, as well as courtroom demeanor training.

Russo claims he was only trying to get more information, not humiliate her. However, after reading the transcript from the woman’s initial 2016 hearing, it’s clear his line of questioning was harmful and beyond insulting.

“Do you know how to stop somebody from having intercourse with you?”
Judge Russo asked the woman.

“Yes,” she replied.

“How would you do that?” the judge asked.

The woman said she would try to physically harm the attacker and say
“no,” to which Judge Russo asked, “What else?”

The woman said she would ask the person to stop, to which Judge Russo
again asked, “What else?”

She then said she would run away.

Russo then continues onward in victim-shaming territory, asking the woman once again what she could have done to prevent herself from getting sexually assaulted—and then offering his own suggestions.

“Run away, get away,” he said. “Anything else?”

“Block your body parts?” Judge Russo added. “Close your legs? Call the
police? Did you do any of those things?”

The plaintiff had come before Russo to get a restraining order against a man whom she not only alleges raped her but, per the Times, also allegedly threatened her life and made inappropriate comments to their child. Russo ultimately denied the woman’s request for a restraining order, according to the Washington Post, adding that her answers to his re-victimizing questions played into his decision-making.

Russo was put on administrative leave in 2017; however, the judicial conduct committee recommending his suspension also accuses Russo of three more counts of courtroom misconduct pertaining to different cases.

“Judge Russo looks forward to a public hearing in which he will be able to respond to the allegations against him,” his lawyer told a local NBC station in March 2018. “We have respect for the process as well as the advisory committee on judicial conduct, and therefore won’t comment further.”

Kim Kardashian Faces Backlash After Claiming She Has 'Nothing Bad to Say' About Donald Trump


Kim Kardashian West turned heads when it was announced she would be meeting with Donald Trump in May to advocate for the release of Alice Marie Johnson, a 63-year-old great-grandmother who had been serving life in prison for a non-violent drug charge. Her efforts worked—Trump commuted Johnson’s sentence, but that hasn’t stopped people from calling out his other policies and the West family’s alignment with the administration.

The backlash continued to pile up on Monday, after Kardashian went on Jimmy Kimmel Live, telling the host she had “nothing bad to say about the president.”

On the show, Kardashian explained she wanted to discuss Johnson’s case with Trump because she “knew there was only one person in power that could make this change and get this woman out of prison.” She added that she has a list of people in prison that she wants to take to Trump, and said she is “very grateful and very hopeful that more good things are going to come out of our conversations.”

She also tried to explain her husband Kanye West’s controversial endorsements of the president. On social media, West has gone on several rants supporting Trump, and his inflammatory tweets have included everything from calling Trump “his brother” to posting pictures of a Make America Great Again hat.

“To make it clear, we’d talk about it and his policies, and he doesn’t necessarily agree with his policies. He likes his personality…and how he made it to be president when everybody really underestimated him,” she said, adding, “He’s not political so he doesn’t dig deep into what’s going on.”

Following the Kimmel interview, Twitter quickly took Kardashian to task, calling her uninformed and pointing out policies the Trump administration has initiated that deserve scrutiny, including the separation of children at the border. Critics also took offense to the tone of the interview—Kardashian laughed and joked that she had been naked when Trump called to tell her he had commuted Johnson’s sentence.

Kardashian’s comments don’t address insults Trump has made about her in the past. In a 2013 interview with Howard Stern, Trump made crude remarks about her physical appearance, saying, “Does she have a good body? No. Does she have a fat ass? Absolutely.”

Others have questioned how committed Kardashian is to prison reform. On social media, many dismissed her initial meeting with Trump as a publicity stunt that benefits both reality show stars.

Kim Kardashian Faces Twitter Backlash for Her Aaliyah Halloween Costume


Kim Kardashian decided to spend Halloween this year paying tribute to some of music’s greatest divas. She kicked things off Friday night with her ’70s-era Cher costume. (Her friend, Jonathan Cheban, dressed as Cher’s ex and longtime musical partner, Sonny Bono.) On Sunday night, she and big sis Kourtney Kardashian went as Madonna and Michael Jackson circa the 1991 Academy Awards. Both looks were, naturally, glamorous as hell.

But it’s the costume Kim wore in between these two that has the Internet in a heated debate. The reality star decided to dress up as the late R&B singer Aaliyah for one of her events. She specifically mimicked the look from Aaliyah’s “Try Again” video: a glittery bikini top and pants, a sparkly choker, and pin-straight hair. She even copied Aaliyah’s smoky-eyed makeup look from the clip. Here’s the Snapchat Kim uploaded of her final costume:

The backlash for this outfit was almost immediate, with several people accusing Kim of cultural appropriation. “Legend or not Aaliyah is a Black woman and you’re not. It’s offensive and you shouldn’t push this limit, but OK,” one person tweeted at Kim. “It’s offensive because [Aaliyah] is dead and you can’t pay homage when you’re an Armenian just using her look as a costume. That’s the issue,” wrote another. Check out these responses, below:

But a few people defended Kim’s look, noting that she didn’t dress in Blackface or appropriate Black culture is any direct way: She just copied a music video outfit. “There’s nothing wrong with what she did or her pick. She just wanted to pay homage to her icons including Cher, Aaliyah, Madonna and etc.,” one person tweeted. “She dressed up as a musical artist. No Blackface, nothing offensive. Y’all love to hate and reach for nothing. Stop it. It’s Halloween,” wrote someone else. Here are those tweets:
