The Biggest Celeb Costume Trend for Halloween 2017 Is Disco Queen


There have been a lot of great celebrity costumes for Halloween 2017 season thus far. But none of them have been chicer or more popular than the 1970s-inspired disco queen looks that everyone from Kaia Gerber and mom Cindy Crawford to Amal Clooney were seen wearing over the holiday weekend.

To be fair, we’re guessing part of the costume’s popularity has to do with the fact that Casamigos, the tequila brand co-founded by George Clooney and Rande Gerber (a.k.a. husbands to Amal and Cindy, respectively), threw a ’70s-themed party in Los Angeles over the weekend. But it also makes sense that the costume is having a moment given the decade’s ongoing popularity in fashion, beauty, and pop culture. After all, who doesn’t love an opportunity to sport big sexy hair and wear something slinky and shimmery?

Mermaid Makeup Tutorial Halloween 2017: The Prettiest Mermaid Costume to Try


Halloween: It’s coming. And unless you’ve been living under a rock (or, ahem, the sea), you’ve probably noticed mermaid makeup splashed all over your Instagram and Pinterest feeds. (It’s one of the highest searched Halloween costumes for 2017!) But here’s where it gets tricky: Half the stuff out there looks like you need Kim Kardashian’s entire glam squad to pull it off. While it’s definitely a makeup look that requires some skill in the contouring and smoky eye department, it is 100 percent possible to do in your bathroom at home.

We tapped Make Up For Ever Director of Education and Artistry Lijha Stewart (who’s also known as the “Queen of Halloween”) to demonstrate exactly how to create mermaid makeup, step-by-step. Let’s get started.

Level of difficulty: We won’t sugarcoat it: on a scale of 1 to 5, this is a 4. It’s intricate, messy (we spilled an entire jar of glitter during the process, oops), and takes some patience. We recommend practicing the mermaid scales a day or two before you do the whole thing.

Amount of time required: Plan to set aside around two hours if you’re aiming to get every tiny detail just so. (And that’s only the makeup. Dinglehoppering not included.)

What you’ll need:
–Highlighter
-Colorful eyeshadows (we used purple, pink, and teal)
-Glitter
-White liquid eyeliner
-Translucent powder
–False eyelashes
-Fishnet stockings
–A makeup sponge

And away we go…

In order to get the best outcome possible (read: to make sure your makeup doesn’t look cakey), complexion prep is a must. The key is to start with a lightweight foundation, like Make Up For Ever Water Blend Foundation, that’ll provide a smooth base for layering. Apply it with a damp makeup sponge so it’s soft and airy, then set your base with a fluffy brush and light dusting of translucent powder, making sure to powder under your eyes to eliminate creasing. Next (and this step is very important) add as much highlighter as possible. “Put it all over,” says Stewart. With another fluffy brush (we used the Make Up For Ever 122 Blending Brush) focus it on areas she called “points of intensity,” in other words: your cheekbones, down the bridge of your nose, your cupid’s bow, shoulders, and clavicle. After that, style your brows as you prefer to wear them; they won’t be touched past this point.

No mermaid is complete without her mermaid eyes. We used two different purple tones here, but feel free to use whatever colors you want (pinks or blues would be dreamy here, too!). To make sure it lasts all night, apply a cream eyeshadow (like Make Up For Ever Aqua Cream) with your fingers first and layer a matching powder shade on top, focusing the darker color in the outer corners. For that super smoky effect, use a fluffy eyeshadow brush to blend the colors outward toward your temples. If you blend too much, you can always go back in with the darker color. The key to making winged liner look more mermaid and less cat? Opt for a vibrant white liquid liner on top. “It won’t work unless it’s liquid,” says Stewart, noting that a pigmented, non-streaky option is crucial. Next, apply a regular white pencil eyeliner on your bottom waterline to open up your eyes. Warning: If you’re not used to wearing anything there, it might feel odd for a few minutes, but that’ll pass! Fake lashes are obviously optional, but if you want to get fancy, here’s our handy guide for doing it yourself. We used Make Up For Ever Lash Show Creative Impact False Lashes, $18. Otherwise, finish things off with a generous helping of your favorite volumizing mascara.

If there’s any time to give the ombré lip trend a go, it’s Halloween. All you need are two colors—we used blue and white—but pink would also be cute here. Start by applying the darker shade in the outer corners of your lips and blending it inward. Then, take the lighter shade and dab it in the center. Blend it out with your fingers and top it off with some highlighter in the middle.

Now for the fun part! For life-like mermaid-looking skin, dust a light layer of teal eyeshadow with a small powder brush in the places you would normally contour; so, the hollows of your cheeks, along your hairline, and underneath your jawline. And don’t be afraid to get creative with it. Add some color underneath your eyes, your nose, or your neck and shoulders.

This step is optional, but really makes the mermaid feel come to life. Take a clean fluffy brush and dust it on top or adjacent to the teal shadow you put on before. Don’t have pink eyeshadow handy? Blush works just fine.

And finally, the part we warned you about: the scales. This step requires some patience and (likely) a friend. Take fishnet stockings and stretch them out to your desired scale size. Have a friend hold them in place while you pat on your desired color (here we used white eyeshadow) with a damp makeup sponge or a dense brush. To really make it pop, choose a cream formula. Let it dry for about five minutes, but after, lock it in with a translucent powder.

10 Halloween Costume Ideas 2017


You may be barely knee-high-sock deep into your fall wardrobe planning, but odds are you’re already thinking about what you’ll be dressing up as this Halloween. (2017 came at us fast, huh?) That’s what two of the most popular platforms for outfit inspiration, Pinterest and Lyst, have found, as they gear up for the holiday. According to user data they’ve compiled throughout the year, shoppers have been using their respective search engines to start dreaming up their Halloween costumes as early as the spring. That surprising tidbit isn’t meant to stress you out—we’re still a month out! And Yandy has only now started to pitch out its head-scratching topical costumes!—but rather, to convince you that when the two brands team up to compile a single, definitive ranking of the ten get-ups they foresee taking over our Instagram feeds, you should trust their intel.

Pinterest and Lyst crunched the numbers on their combined 210 million monthly users globally from this year to predict what the most popular (i.e. pervasive) Halloween costumes will be in 2017. There are the ones you probably saw coming (a hard yas on anything Wonder Woman-related) and others that, though always adorable, feel a bit random (apparently, giraffes are trending). Though we imagine there will be plenty of Taylor Swift zombies making the rounds this year (despite not making the cut on this particular ranking), these 10 ideas should get the ball rolling on your own costume brainstorm—or, at the very least, prepare you to expect to run into a lot of Pennywises out on the street come Hallow’s Eve. Read on.

10. Mermaid

Guess the folks who attend Coney Island’s annual Mermaid Parade get to wear their costume twice this year: Lyst and Pinterest found interest in the mythical sea creature spike on their respective platforms. Apparently, mermaid leggings are of interest to users on both sites, with 1.4 million saves and 8,000 monthly searches globally on the search term on Pinterest and Lyst, respectively.

9. Unicorn

Yes! All of those hours spent perfecting unicorn makeup tutorials weren’t in vain. The trend is still going strong in 2017, and will likely remain that way through Halloween. According to Lyst, searches with the word “unicorn” have grown by 130% from May until now; on Pinterest, they’ve increased 110% year over year.

8. Hippie

Channeling the fashion of Woodstock has long been in our last-minute costume arsenal, especially with all the ’60s and ’70s trend revivals on the runway. Based on how users are seeking out nostalgic silhouettes, like flares and round colored-lens sunglasses, on both Pinterest and Lyst, the platforms predict you’ll be seeing a lot of hippies this Halloween.

7. Baywatch

We know red one-piece swimsuits were trending this summer, thanks to the big-screen Baywatch revival. And it seems like interest in these get-ups hasn’t wained: Saves for Baywatch costumes on Pinterest have increased 147% this year, compared to 2016. Guess we’ll be suiting up in October!

6. Game of Thrones

What better way to pass the time waiting for the final season of Game of Thrones than by dreaming up a painstakingly detailed costume worthy of the Seven Kingdoms? No surprise, but Daenerys Targaryen and Jon Snow are the two most popular characters to dress up as, according to Pinterest and Lyst users. Though we now know that we can cop the Night’s Watch capes from IKEA, saves for shaggy fur are up 280% year-over-year on Pinterest, while searches for black and grey fur stoles average 4,000 a day on Lyst; meanwhile, Khaleesi’s regal ensembles this past season inspired shoppers to look into grecian-style and light blue gowns on Lyst more than ever before.

5. Wonder Woman

Nothing makes us more excited than the prospect of running into whole squads of Wonder Women out about town on Halloween. On Pinterest, there are currently more than 230,000 costume ideas related to the superhero saved. Lyst, meanwhile, has seen an uptick in searches for “red corset” (growing 115% year-over-year), as well as actual sales on chunky gold cuffs since June, when the film premiered.

4. Giraffe

Pinterest and Lyst predict that the giraffe will become the new cat in terms of easy Halloween costumes, based on an astounding increase in saves on makeup and costume inspiration imagery around it—a whopping 1,200% compared to last year. Sure!

3. Belle from Beauty and the Beast

Tale as old as time, costume as old as rhyme—or, at the very least, as old as 1991, when the original animated film premiered. The live action revival starring Emma Watson, though, has renewed interest in this Disney princess’ wardrobe—apparently, Belle’s gown kept cropping up on Pinterest around prom season, which, to both platforms, is an indication that it’ll resurface once again come Halloween.

2. Stranger Things

There were plenty of Elevens out and about last year around Halloween time, and it seems that the 2017 season will be no different, considering that the second season of Stranger Things premieres on October 27. Though, according to searches for trucker hats and ’80s graphic T-shirts, Pinterest and Lyst feel like we’ll see more folks dress up as the boys this year, rather than just Eleven.

1. Pennywise the clown from IT

Well, it looks like Halloween 2017 has already taken a terrifying turn, as the #1 costume on Pinterest and Lyst’s joint ranking was none other than Pennywise, the clown from IT, based on an increased interest in clown makeup and costume ideas (on Pinterest), as well as in lace-up pom-pom sneakers (on Lyst). Hey, at the very least, maybe it’ll be half of the most unexpectedly delightful couple’s costume we’ll see this year?

Yandy Releases Fake News Halloween Costume


If you’re looking for a Halloween costume that’s affordable, politically-minded yet inoffensive, instantly recognizable, and in serious danger of being no longer topical by the time Halloween rolls around, well, look no further — Yandy’s got you covered.

The lingerie brand, purveyor of such tasteful and everlasting classics as Sexy Harry Potter, Sexy Donald Trump, and Sexy Minion has made another winner with the Sexy Fake News costume. Yandy’s website implores you to “spread all the alternative facts” in this costume (ew), which really works on subtlety by slapping the word “FAKE” in red and all caps across the boobs of a dress made of various newspaper clippings.

If you’ve been living under a rock since the election (which…don’t blame you) and are seeking to rectify this by going as something more current for Halloween, here’s a super quick recap. The phrase “fake news” became popular during the 2016 presidential election when (real) news reports came out about the spread of false news stories propagated by alt-right 4channers, teenagers in Macedonia, and one Jestin Coler, who reportedly made $10,000 to $30,000 a month just thinking up BS. These news stories were often completely ridiculous but sometimes convincing tales about political figures published on sites that looked eerily close to the real thing and subsequently spread on social media. When the news that Donald Trump won the election turned out to be real, lots of people attributed his victory to fake news, and his co-opting of the phrase to retaliate against any negative news story has made the term a mainstay in contemporary political discourse.

In other words, it’s a meme.

Because I am not, in fact, making $10,000 to $30,000 a month by writing fake news and am being paid on the hour, I decided to put my student debt-bought journalism school education to good use and see if the newspaper clips used on Yandy’s dress were real. Lo and behold, they are (10 points for verisimilitude), but the stories they’re using are really old (-20 points for topicality) — the only one that was legible enough to Google is from 2000. So if you’re the detail-oriented type, you could totally DIY this shindig by pulling headlines from this past year, but if you just want something that might elicit a chuckle, you can purchase this dress on the website for a cool $54.95. Hopefully it’s no longer a thing by next Halloween.
