Emmys 2018 Intro: 'We Solved It' Calls Out Hollywood for Thinking It Fixed Diversity Issues

The nominees for the 2018 Emmys are more diverse than ever, with shows like Atlanta, Insecure, and The Handmaid’s Tale racking up multiple categories. Sandra Oh is the first Asian woman to be nominated for a lead actress award for Killing Eve (which you absolutely should check out if you haven’t already). That being said, the industry still has a long way to go. While the nominations this year show we’re heading in a better direction, Hollywood is still by and large dominated by white men, both in front of and behind the camera. It’s important not to lose sight of that.

Don’t worry, though: Kristen Bell, Keenan Thompson, Kate McKinnon, Ricky Martin, Sterling K. Brown, and Tituss Burgess are here to make sure showbiz titans don’t pat themselves on the back too hard. These performers and more appeared in a musical intro at the beginning of tonight’s show that relayed an important message: Just because we’ve made progress in one or two areas doesn’t mean diversity is “fixed.”

Watch the first 30 seconds of the performance for yourself, below:

One of the highlights of the musical number was when RuPaul came on stage to hammer home the fact that a few LGBTQ+ people or actors of color appearing on hit TV shows isn’t the cure for Hollywood’s diversity problem.

Other memorable moments included when Thompson and McKinnon gave a hat-tip to Sandra Oh’s historic nomination and Oh just said, “It’s an honor just to be Asian,” in response. And at one point, Andy Samberg descended from the stage and asked if there was room for a straight white man in this song—and I think you can deduce how that (hilariously) panned out.

Colton Underwood Admits He Wanted Tia Booth to Be The Bachelorette: 'We Needed More Time'

The Bachelorette‘s Colton Underwood had one of the more emotional moments on tonight’s Men Tell All, with the focus less on his feelings for former contestant Tia and more about his decision not to have sex. “People think I’m less of a man because I haven’t had sex, and that’s hard for me to hear,” he said as he teared up. “I feel like a normal guy, so it’s hard when you hear all the negative things. It’s my choice and hopefully it’s something that’s respected from women and in the public.”

After the show taped, it was clear that Underwood was still affected by what happened on stage—especially because of a comment fellow contestant Jean Blanc made about Underwood’s virginity. “I will never talk to him again,” Underwood tells us. “His comment was disgusting and uncalled for.”

But with his journey about to continue on Bachelor in Paradise, there’s obviously more drama in store for the former football player. After all, his former fling Tia Booth will joining him in Mexico. “It’s emotional,” he says of the experience. “It’s full of unexpected surprises.”

Until then, Underwood shares more about his experience on The Bachelorette. Read on.

Things got emotional on Men Tell All tonight. How do you feel now that it’s over?

Colton Underwood: I still obviously feel a little emotional. I didn’t have plans to talk about my virginity because I feel like it was played out and it’s been a hot topic for the last couple weeks. [My virginity is] never easy to talk about, but anytime I do, it helps me grow as a person. So, I do feel good about that. It was hard for me to even bring it up at first on the show. I kept beating around the bush by saying I’m not that experienced. Now I can finally say, “I’m a virgin. I haven’t had sex” without a tremble in my voice.

Before you filmed the season, did you know this was going to become a topic of conversation?

Colton: I didn’t have a game plan with my virginity going into the show. I didn’t know if I was going to bring it up. When I did bring it up in the Bahamas, I wanted to make sure that [Becca] knew before she made her decision on whose family she wanted to meet. As hard as that conversation was, it was so good for me to actually say it out loud and go from six people to now six million people knowing it. People can agree or disagree with me, but hopefully some of them have a respect for me and my choice.

You and Jean Blanc had a tense moment during Men Tell All after he insulted your virginity. Did you address him after?

Colton: Jean Blanc is one of the guys that I never talked to after the show and, moving forward, I will never talk to. I think his comment was disgusting and uncalled for. It was so inappropriate in 2018—in the year of the women—and [he’s] going to be disrespectful to a whole gender? He’s going to use that word to describe the female anatomy and to call me out? And think he’s doing something positive [by saying that]? It is what it is, but I’m never going to talk to the dude again, so I don’t care.

Moving on: Was there any part of you that had hoped Tia would be the Bachelorette?

Colton: I’m not going to lie, yeah. The one thing that hindered Tia and I’s relationship and played a factor into it…it was hard for me to get a read off of that weekend that we spent together, whether we could be good for each other. She was going back to Arkansas, and I was going back to Colorado. We needed more time. I needed more time in that relationship to see [where things could go]. I was very up and front and honest, like, “I hope it’s you. I’m just letting you know I’m going on.” She knew from day two of us talking that I was a finalist for the show, and I said how cool would it be [if it was Tia]. When I found out it was Becca, [Tia] said, “Becca’s a great person, and I can’t wait for you to see your journey and hear about your experience. I’m so jealous. That’s awesome. You’re going to be with my friends.” That was it. It was very supportive. Tia and I’s relationship moved more into a friendship those last two weeks leading up to me leaving for filming.

You’ll be on Bachelor in Paradise with Tia. How did that go?

Colton: Paradise is emotional. I think there’s a lot of conversations that need to be had. It’s full of unexpected surprises that are both good, happy, sad, funny, all the emotions. I felt everything in Paradise.

Harvey Weinstein's Accusers Are Reacting to His Arrest on Twitter: 'We Got You'

After months of allegations, former Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein turned himself in for arrest and charges of first- and third-degree rape and committing a criminal sexual act in the first degree. More than 80 women have accused him of sexual harassment, assault, and misconduct, including Angelina Jolie, Gwyneth Paltrow, Mira Sorvino, Asia Argento, and Rose McGowan, since the New York Times and The New Yorker both broke Pulitzer-Prize winning stories featuring some of these women’s testimonies.

Weinstein will be charged with allegations from two women, reports Al Jazeera, one of whom is former actress Lucia Evans, who says that Weinstein forced her to perform oral sex on him. More charges might be on the way, too: Prosecutors are also still actively investigating allegations from actress Paz de la Huerta. (Weinstein maintains his denial of engaging in nonconsensual sex; his lawyers say he’ll file a not-guilty plea.)

As news broke of his impending arrest and in the hours after, as Weinstein arrived at the lower Manhattan police station Friday morning, women who have spoken out against Weinstein reacted on social media to his arrest.

Asia Argento, actress who alleges Weinstein forcibly performed oral sex on her

“Glued to the screen @CNN ‘Harvey Weinstein will be charged with rape'”

“Harvey Weinstein ain’t smiling now.”

Rose McGowan, actress who alleges Weinstein raped her

“I, and so many of Harvey Weinstein’s survivors, had given up hope that our rapist would be held accountable by law. Twenty years ago, I swore that I would right this wrong. Today we are one step closer to justice. We were young women who were assaulted by Weinstein and later terrorized by his vast network of complicity. I stand with my fellow survivors. May his arrest give hope to all victims and survivors everywhere that are telling their truths.”

“We got you, Harvey Weinstein, we got you”

Mira Sorvino, Academy-Award winning actress who said she had to “ward him off” after he made an advance on her

“#Justice… Harvey Weinstein will be charged with rape, abuse”

Lysette Anthony, British Hollyoaks actress who alleges Weinstein raped her

“And so it begins- #JusticeForAll #MeToo”

Annabella Sciorra, Sopranos actress who alleged Weinstein raped her

“Can’t wait!”

Rosanna Arquette, actress who alleges Weinstein thrust her hand at his crotch, telling her she was making a “huge mistake” when she rebuffed him

“Tick tock”

Lauren Sivan, a TV reporter who accused Weinstein of masturbating in front of her

“It’s been a long time coming and today my fellow victims and I rejoice and pray no one ever underestimates the power of women when we stand together + scream the truth #WeSpoke #MeToo #TimesUp #LockHimUp”

Emma de Caunes, actress who alleges she met Weinstein for a meeting at a hotel, during which he went to the bathroom, came out naked, and demanded she lay down next to him on the bed

“Time for justice #HarveyWeinstein”

Heather Graham, actress who said she felt Weinstein implied she had to sleep with him to star in one of his films

“It’s about time: Harvey Weinstein turned himself in this morning and is in police custody. Today, instead of focusing on him, I will be celebrating all of the powerful women out there. This is just the beginning #TheFutureIsFemale”

Jessica Barth, actress who says Weinstein asked her to join him in his hotel room after 2011’s Golden Globes

“A part of justice begins. #HarveyWeinstein #justice #prosecution”

Erika Rosenbaum, actress who alleges Weinstein held her neck in a hotel bathroom while he masturbated

“Thank you for everything, @jodikantor”

Police Department Apologizes for Its Handling of Larry Nassar Allegations: 'We Wish We Had This One Back.'

While court is adjourned until tomorrow in the Eaton County sentencing of former USA Gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar, but there is still news breaking around the case. The local police in Meridian Township convened a press conference Thursday afternoon apologize for their initial handling of allegations against Nassar by Brianne Randall-Gay in 2004.

Randall-Gay, then 17, filed a sexual assault complaint to the local police that claimed Nassar touched her breast and vagina for several minutes during a visit that was meant to be an exam about her scoliosis but it was never prosecuted. Per a newly released police report, a few interviews were conducted but the lead detective concluded—after speaking to Nassar—that the reported abuse was a legitimate medical procedure. According to Deadspin, there is no indication that the police contacted other medical professionals for an opinion, nor did they contact Children’s Protective Services. Deadspin also called Sgt. Al Spencer, who reportedly oversaw the case, and he told them, “To be honest with you, I don’t recall the case at all. I don’t have any memory of it.” McCready is still on the force, while Spencer is retired.

During the emotional press conference, Meridian Township manager Frank Walsh and Chief of Police Dave Hall publicly apologized to Randall-Gay, who participated via Skype from Seattle. Walsh and Hall both recounted the emotional phone call they made to Randall-Gay (and her family) to apologize for the mishandling of her case back in 2004. They offered to fly to Seattle to apologize in person and when she let them know she had decided to come to read an impact statement at Nassar’s sentencing, they offered to pay for her ticket. They were also in the courtroom that day. Both expressed gratitude for the grace that Randall-Gay had shown them in accepting their apology and vowed to make it a mission to not let this happen again.

To that point, Chief Hall outlined three initiatives for the township to undertake. First, they will be instituting new training procedures for all of their officers and civilian staff, bringing in experts from outside the force to conduct said training. Randall-Gay has also agreed to film a video about her own experience for the officers to learn from. The second initiative is to look back at all criminal sexual conduct reports (CSCs) from 2000 to the present day to make sure nothing has been missed. Hall confirmed that no other medical expert was consulted in Randall-Gay’s case and that there is no reason to believe that the prosecutor’s office was ever made aware of the case.

“We wish we had this one back,” said Hall. “We want to do better.” From this point forward, the chief will now sign off on all CSC reports. And finally, Randall-Gay herself will be helping to develop a community-wide outreach program to young people understand criminal sexual conduct and how to report it to the authorities.

Randall-Gay said that the apology has helped her further process her trauma. “It will not erase the pain I suffered, but it was therapeutic.” She also vowed to continue to work toward systemic change, “I fight today […] so the next little girl won’t have to suffer for 14 years.” It is incredibly powerful, even as a viewer, to watch people own their mistakes and try to make changes that will better their community. Let’s hope others follow suit. As Walsh said, “We can’t rewind the tape, but we can have an effect on the tape moving forward.”

Kim Kardashian Apologizes for Her Aaliyah Halloween Costume: 'We Don't See Color in My Home'

To say Kim Kardashian West went all out for Halloween weekend 2017 would be an understatement.

The reality superstar dressed up in not one, not two, but three separate costumes, each paying homage to some of music’s greatest female icons. Her looks included tributes to Cher, Madonna, and, most controversially, the late R&B singer Aaliyah.

Specifically, Kim wore Aaliyah’s exact outfit from her “Try Again” music video—including the singer’s famous sequin choker and statement grey eye makeup. And while yes, Kim’s outfit was certainly on point in terms of being an exact replica, many pointed out on social media that it was veering dangerously close to cultural appropriation.

“Legend or not Aaliyah is a Black woman and you’re not. It’s offensive and you shouldn’t push this limit, but OK,” one user, for example, tweeted at Kim.

Here’s a look at her costume, in case you missed it:

Today, Kim released a statement defending why she made the decision to dress as Aaliyah and apologizing to fans who may have been offended by her costume choice. As she wrote on her website, “When I was deciding what I wanted to be for Halloween this year, I had a lot of ideas that I narrowed down to musical icons and my second costume was Aaliyah. The look was inspired by what she wore in her ‘Try Again’ music video.” Kim added, “Aaliyah was such an amazing singer, and she will forever be a music legend. I saw online that some people thought my costume was in poor taste, and I am truly sorry if that offended anyone.”

Kim noted that when she was choosing her costumes she didn’t think of it as dressing as a race or culture “but rather as a woman whom I will always admire.” She added, “I play every kind of genre of music in my home, and I like for my kids to be exposed to many different artists.”

“For me, it’s always about love and respect,” she continued. “I loved that Kourtney was Michael Jackson for one of her costumes and that my son was Axl Rose,” she said. “We don’t see color in my home. We were paying homage to people and artists we love and respect—it’s that simple!”
