How to Cure Butt Acne: A Complete Guide

Let’s just get straight to the point: Butt acne is real, and it’s not comfortable. Breakouts that occur on unlikely parts of your body can be especially distressing because we often have no idea how—or why—they got there.

Technically called “folliculitis,” acne on your butt isn’t quite the same as the flare-ups that happen on your face. It’s often due to clogged hair follicles rather than clogged pores and can occur from a combination of occlusion (i.e., blockage), friction, sweat, and bacteria, according to Susan Bard, M.D., of New York’s Sadick Dermatology. Basically, if you leave your sweaty yoga pants on for hours after class or wear skintight jeans or leather pants when its balmy out, you could be upping your chances of getting butt acne.

For me, it happens every time I “forget” to shower between a Spin class and brunch, or when I want to leave my cute workout outfit on all day instead of putting on real clothes. Needless to say, it makes all subsequent Spin classes seriously awkward, both in front of other women in the locker room (even though I know I shouldn’t care) and on the bike. (Let’s just say it’s not a time you want to do tap backs.)

Determined to put an end to this cycle, and help out anyone else who might need it, I grilled Dr. Bard for her best advice on how to get rid of butt acne. Here, the four tips she swears by, because I know we’ve all been there.

1. Give the tight clothes a rest.
In case you needed another excuse to embrace the sweats-and-stilettos trend, loose pants are your best bet for avoiding breakouts. “To prevent folliculitis, I encourage patients not to wear tight, friction-inducing clothing such as tight jeans and to change out of your sweaty gym clothes as soon as possible,” says Dr. Bard. Opt for cotton underwear over nylon or Spandex to give the skin on your butt a chance to breathe.

2. Wash up after workouts.
Not only should you always shower after working out, but it’s important you actually pay attention to your skin back there while you do it. To cleanse, skip the basic body wash and reach for an antibacterial soap or benzoyl peroxide wash like Neutrogena’s Clear Stubborn Acne Cleanser. Some other tips: Make sure you wash your hair first and body last so the dirty suds from your scalp won’t drip down and clog your follicles. And after you shower, steer clear of thick, heavy body lotions that may do more harm than good. A good option to try? Curél’s Fragrance Free Comforting Body Lotion, which goes on light and is formulated for sensitive skin.

Also, when your skin is clear (so before any zits arise), remember to exfoliate regularly to remove dirt and bacteria, the same way you would for your face. You can use a gritty body scrub like one of these editor favorites. Or you can use a product with glycolic acid, like Glycolix 18% Extremity Cream which will help exfoliating skin more gently.

3. Don’t try to pop or pick at butt acne.
Not that you can reach them easily, anyway. But just in case you have bionically long arms, or have managed to find a way to get a hand on them, it’s important you resist the temptation to squeeze or pick at butt acne, which—according to Dr. Bard—will only make it worse. Doing so risks the chance that the spots will become more prone to infection, and it also might cause scarring.

4. Don’t be embarrassed to see a dermatologist.
We know. There’s nothing more cringeworthy than having to lie on your stomach while a doctor examines your bare ass, but here’s something to keep in mind: Derms have seen it all and they’re there to help. If you feel as if your acne isn’t improving, is getting worse, or is too painful to get about your day to day, it’s time to visit a pro. They’ll be able to help custom tailor a skin care plan that works best for you and/or recommend prescription medication you can take.

Sexting 101: Your Complete Guide to Sending and Receiving Nude Photos

Sexting with a partner can be thrilling. It can also be nerve-raking. How can you be sure they’re the only one who will see a racy pic? What if they send you a nude photo, but you don’t feel comfortable returning the favor? What’s the appropriate way to respond if you like what you see? And what if you get a nude pic that’s not appreciated?

Sending and receiving nude photos can be amazing, but only if everyone is on the same page. “In terms of pictures, consent and communication are needed as they are in all sexual interactions, off or online,” says Laurie Mintz, Ph.D., a sex therapist, psychologist, and author of Becoming Cliterate.

Here’s how to handle every sexting situation that comes your way.

Situation 1: Your partner asks for a nude photo

First things first: It’s completely up to you if you’re willing to get naked in front of the camera. (If full-on nudity isn’t your thing, you might try something more subtle like underwear or even just a t-shirt.)

Second, be aware that sending a nude photo always entails some risk, says Mintz. The question to ask yourself is, “How sure are you this would not be someone who would show these photos to someone else or post them in revenge if you break up?” she says. “You need to be aware that trust can be broken.”

To practice safer sexting, at the very least, add a passcode to your phone and have your partner do the same. Cropping your face out of any photos also helps to minimize privacy concerns. To really be protected, consider using an encrypted app like DiscKreet which adds an extra layer of protection to your peace of mind. Messages and photos sent between partners in the app require two passwords to open at any given time—in other words, you have to give your consent every time a partner wants to view your photos.

Situation 2: You want to send a nude photo to someone

You’re comfortable enough with someone to take your texting to the next level? Awesome. Just make sure they’re on board, too, since not everyone has the same comfort level.

Rule number one: Always ask before sending an unsolicited racy photo. “If they reply with enthusiasm, you’ve got the green light,” says Astroglide’s resident sexologist Jess O’Reilly, Ph.D. “If they say no or sound unsure, respect their boundaries. Sexting can be hot, but there are many other hot activities in which to engage if it’s not your partner’s cup of tea.”

Situation 3: You want your partner to send a nude photo

When you’re asking for a photo, the same rules apply: make sure your partner enthusiastically consents before engaging in any nude photo exchange. Mintz recommends a simple, clear request like “I’d love to get a picture of your XX.”

Most importantly, don’t pressure them, and don’t take it personally if they say “no,” says O’Reilly. They may be concerned about privacy or just not feel comfortable with it, but that doesn’t reflect how they feel about you.

Situation 4: You get a photo you like but aren’t sure where to take it from there

Sexting can be fantastic foreplay—it can also be a little awkward to get the hang of. Once you get a sexy photo from your partner, it’s not uncommon to draw a blank on what to say next, especially if this is a new activity for you or your partner.

Spoiler alert: “Nice!” probably won’t cut it. Taking a mental health day to binge watch Game of Thrones is nice. Scoring the last spot in your favorite SoulCycle class is nice. When someone get’s vulnerable enough to share a nude photo, you can do better than nice.

Katy Perry Had a Complete Meltdown During This American Idol Proposal

Katy Perry had the world’s most dramatic reaction to a proposal—and it wasn’t even her own. On Monday night’s episode of American Idol, the singer literally fell to the floor and broke down in sobs after contestant Johanna Jones got engaged in front of everyone.

Jones had just finished singing her rendition of Chris Isaak’s “Wicked Game,” and she was in the middle of telling the judges she was “pretty dang in love” with her boyfriend, who allegedly couldn’t make her audition because of his final exams. Just then, said boyfriend popped up next to her and told her she was the love his life. He got down on one knee and he asked her to marry him, which sent Perry into full meltdown mode.

There were tears. There were howls. There was a theatrical slump to the ground. Perry’s fellow judges, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie, both helped her up and made sure she was OK throughout the touching proposal. “Why won’t someone love me like that?” she wailed between sobs. Her reaction was so intense that a makeup artist had to come on set and touch up her mascara.

It was a lot, but Jones seemed happy to share the moment with Perry, who gushed over her ring.

The episode was filmed before Perry’s own boyfriend Orlando Bloom proposed to her, which has us wondering how she reacted when she was the one getting a diamond ring. If this engagement is any indication, there were many tears.

Even her Idol costars took the opportunity to teases her a little bit. Bryan tweeted some backstage footage of her crying her eyes out and wrote, “Thank goodness Orlando put a ring on it, @katyperry. Thought you weren’t going to make it there for a second.” We’ve got to say, we agree.

A Complete Timeline of Hailey Baldwin and Justin Bieber’s Relationship

Justin Bieber and Hailey Baldwin‘s relationship sure feels like it’s been a whirlwind—both in how quickly they went from “back together” to “engaged” to “married,” but also in the pace of the rumors about them constantly flying around. But the two have actually known each other for some time. “It’s kind of a surprise, but kind of not. Justin has been extremely happy these past few weeks,” a source told People after the couple got engaged. “He has known Hailey for a long time. This might seem sudden, but they know each other very well.”

Bieber proposed in July 2018 in the Bahamas and confirmed the news in an Instagram post, writing, “Listen plain and simple Hailey I am soooo in love with everything about you! So committed to spending my life getting to know every single part of you loving you patiently and kindLY. I promise to lead our family with honor and integrity letting Jesus through his Holy Spirit guide us in everything we do and every decision we make.” The couple married in a secret courthouse ceremony that September and now find themselves amid a new round of rumors about “trust issues” and a postponement of their wedding celebration with friends and family.

So how exactly did we get here? Below, a complete timeline of Baldwin and Bieber’s relationship.

2009: A preteen Baldwin met her future husband for the first time when her father, Steve Baldwin, introduced her to Bieber backstage at the Today show. The two kept it just as awkward as you’d expect from tweens:

2011: Once again Steven Baldwin brought Bieber and his daughter together—this time on the red carpet at the premiere of Bieber’s movie Never Say Never. The pair smiled (ever so slightly) for the cameras. That same year Bieber confirmed his budding relationship with Selena Gomez.

2014: By 2014 Bieber and Gomez were broken up. Baldwin, meanwhile, had struck up a close friendship with Kendall Jenner, who also happened to be friends with Bieber, and the three were spotted at the Hillsong Church in New York City that November.

A month later, though, Baldwin shut down any dating rumors, telling E! News, “I’ve known him since I was so young—since I was like 13—and we’ve just been good friends over the years. We have just stayed close and there’s nothing more to it than that.”

2015: On New Year’s Day Bieber posted an Instagram video featuring a cameo of Baldwin. But once again, Baldwin denied dating rumors. Baldwin told E! News, “He’s just going through a time in his life where he’s transitioning in a really positive way and he needs good people around him. And I’m trying to be a good friend and be there for him and support him.”

But wait, there’s more: In December of 2015 the pair rang in the New Year together yet again. This time in Anguilla.

2016: Finally, in January of 2016, Baldwin and Bieber reveal they’re an item when Bieber shared a snapshot of the two kissing on Instagram. However, both Baldwin and Bieber tell the press the relationship is a low-key one.

“We are not an exclusive couple,” Baldwin told E! News. “He’s about to go on tour. Relationships at this age are already complicated, but I don’t really like to talk about it because it’s between me and him.”

Bieber, meanwhile, told GQ that Baldwin is someone he “really loves” but he’s too busy for a relationship. “I already have a lot that I have to commit to. A lot of responsibilities,” he said. “I don’t want to feel like the girl I love is an added responsibility.”

Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez: A Complete Timeline of Their Relationship

Congrats are in order for Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez, who just announced their engagement after two years of dating. Ever since confirming their romance in 2017, the two have proven that they’re a match made in heaven through copious loved-up Instagram posts, adorable quotes, and multiple instances of twinning their outfits (a sure sign of love if any). From their joint Vanity Fair cover to their PDA-filled red carpet appearances, here’s a look back at J.Lo and A-Rod’s relationship timeline—which, by the way, begins 12 years before they actually started dating.

May 2005: The two first meet at a baseball game at Shea Stadium in Queens, New York, in 2005. Lopez is still married to then-husband Marc Anthony, but she stops to shake Rodriguez’s hand before the first pitch.

March 2017: Fast-forward almost 12 years. “They have been dating for a few weeks,” a source tells People in March. “[Alex] has been around her family, and [Jennifer] really likes that he is a dad. She is aware, though, that he is a ladies’ man too and is being cautious. For now, it’s just fun. She is single and enjoys dating.”

Later on that month, Rodriguez confirms their relationship on The View. “It’s obvious, we’ve been having a great time,” he says. “She’s an amazing girl and one of the smartest human beings I’ve ever met and also an incredible mother.”

Then, just hours after his interview, Lopez and Rodriguez are spotted in public together for the first time.

April 2017: Lopez opens up to Ellen Degeneres about the new man in her life, dishing all the details about how the two got re-acquainted more than a decade after they first met. “I was having lunch somewhere and saw him,” she says, “and then, afterwards, I went outside, but for some reason, I just felt like tapping him on the shoulder and saying ‘Hi’.”

Throughout the month of April, Lopez and Rodriguez are spotted hand-in-hand all around town.

June 2017: Lopez shares the first photo of her and Rodriguez’s kids all hanging out, meaning things have definitely progressed. (She has two children—twins Max and Emme—and he has two daughters, Natasha and Ella.)

The couple also take their first trip to Paris together.

July 2017: The singer praises A-Rod in a sweet birthday tribute on Instagram: “Happy birthday to the man who makes my heart skip a beat every time he walks in the room.”

October 2017: Us Weekly reports that Lopez and Rodriguez have started looking for a home in New York together.

Later that month, the couple unveil their Vanity Fair cover. In their first-ever interview together, they open up about their relationship and dish about what they love about each other and all the things they have in common. “We are very much twins,” Rodriguez says in the cover story. “We’re both Leos, we’re both from New York, we’re both Latino… and about 20 other things.”

February 2018: The two celebrate their first anniversary, with Lopez giving Rodriguez a shoutout at one of her concerts. “We’ve been together for one year today,” she says. “I don’t want to get all mushy or anything, but baby, this song’s for you. I love you.”

July 2017: It’s Rodriguez’s turn to give Lopez some love on her birthday, writing, “For someone who has been about giving everything she has 365 days a year—to our children, our families, the world—I hope today, we can give you all the happiness you deserve.”

August 2018: The pair walk the 2018 MTV VMAs red carpet together, where Rodriguez proves that he’s the best Instagram boyfriend when he’s caught snapping pics of Lopez.
