Selena Gomez Just Called Out Another Big Problem With 'Pretty' Filters

Selena Gomez has plenty of experience with social media, but there’s one aspect of the more visually driven platforms that she doesn’t love: namely, filters. Flicking through the options on Snapchat, she’d noticed that there was a pattern to all of the “pretty” filters (think the ones that make you look like a flower-crowned queen of summer). Gomez proceeded to call out how they generally lighten the user’s eye color in a way that other filters don’t—which led the brown-eyed pop star to wonder exactly why that was.

“Literally every single Snapchat filter has blue eyes,” Gomez said. “But…what if you have brown eyes? Am I supposed to have these eyes to look good?”

She ran through a few other filters to continue testing her hypothesis.

“They use my brown eyes for this one,” she said about a filter that morphs lips into an oversized, distorted version of their actual selves. “I don’t understand; they have all the blue eyes for the [filters] that are really pretty.”

The story’s since expired, but some fans made sure it lived on on Twitter:

She has a point: If massive social media giants are correlating lighter eyes with a certain standard of beauty, that’s a message that could subliminally make an impact on users—especially younger, impressionable ones. After all, it’s not uncommon for little kids to play around with their parents’ Snapchat filters. (Not to mention all the issues that Snapchat-like apps—and Snapchat itself—have had with racist filters.) We’re already seeing the impact of filters on how women perceive themselves, to the point where they’re reportedly getting cosmetic surgery to look more like the filtered versions of themselves they see on apps like Snapchat. There’s even a name for the phenomenon: “Snapchat dysmorphia.”

Gomez, it seems, might not be the biggest fan of the “pretty” filters now—she signed off implying she might stay away from them—but she certainly gives users (and, one hopes, the higher-ups at companies that use filtering features in their apps) something to think about next time they pull up a filter.

Kim Kardashian Called Out a Tabloid for Saying She Has 'Bad Skin'

Kim Kardashian is no stranger to tabloids playing on her name and likeness for clicks. At times, she welcomes the attention—but not so much when it comes to hurtful words about her skin.

The Daily Mail learned that lesson today after tweeting out a story with the caption, “Make-up mogul Kim Kardashian suffers bad skin day ahead of Master Class beauty seminar.” The images showed her out and about in LA with less-than-perfect skin and she was quick with a response. Her reply? “It’s psoriasis all over my face. ?” Any fan of Keeping Up with the Kardashians knows that Kardashian has been battling psoriasis—a chronic skin condition that can cause dryness, flakiness, inflammation, and discoloration—for years.

Fans quickly jumped to Kardashian’s defense and sympathized with her skin issues. “This is why I can’t be famous, you literally cannot be human,” wrote one Twitter user. “Do not let the media shake you. My mom has psoriasis, it took her a long time to accept it and not let the opinions of others shake her. Her psoriasis is still bad bc there are underlining issues she refuses to address, but people like you help start those convo. Thank you ❤️,” wrote another. One user succinctly pointed out that “psoriasis is no laughing matter.”

Back in December, Kardashian was crowd-sourcing her huge following for help about what to do to alleviate her psoriasis symptoms. “I think the time has come I start a medication for psoriasis,” she said. “I’ve never seen it like this before and I can’t even cover it at this point. It’s taken over my body. Has anyone tried a medication for psoriasis & what kind works best? Need help ASAP!!!”

Honestly, it’s pretty great that someone like Kardashian is so open about her skin issues, seeing as it’s one of the most relatable things about her life. (That goes for Kendall Jenner too.) And it certainly helps normalize the condition when she calls out a tabloid for mocking it. Well done all-around, Kimberly.

Someone Called Alex Rodriguez 'the Guy J.Lo Is Dating,' and Where Is the Lie?

Alex Rodriguez has made it clear he knows how lucky he is to be with Jennifer Lopez. He’s the ultimate Instagram husband, raves about her whenever he can, and even works out to her music. So when a fan approached him and asked if he was “the guy J.Lo is dating,” he wasn’t insulted at all. Instead, the baseball champ decided to have a little fun with the situation.

“Yeah! A-Rod. Alex Rodriguez. There we go,” the person said to Rodriguez at first.

“Who’s that?” Rodriguez responded playfully, to which the woman replied, “That’s the guy that J.Lo is dating.” Facts are facts.

“You’re kidding me!” he said, feigning surprise. This exchange went on for a few more seconds, with the inquiring person showing A-Rod photos of himself to prove they look alike. “First of all, I would never wear pajamas that goofy,” he said about one of the pics. “I mean, what a tool!”

Eventually, Rodriguez revealed that he was, in fact, “the guy J.Lo is dating.” The fact that this woman used this as his primary identifier is iconic, to say the least. Where is the lie?

Watch this exchange go down for yourself, below:

“She’s the hardest working lady and, you know, I grew up with a single mother. I have two daughters. I am a big, big promoter of women equality,” Rodriguez said about Lopez to Entertainment Tonight a few months back. “I like that for my daughters and Jennifer is the role model.”

Rodriguez and Lopez first met in 2005 but it wasn’t until March 2017 that they officially began dating.

Someone Called Meghan Markle a 'Fat Lady,' and Her Response Was So Good

Meghan Markle stopped by one of her new patronages, the animal charity Mayhew, on Wednesday (January 16) and met some of its staff, volunteers, and beneficiaries. One of them called her a “fat lady”—intended as a compliment, or at least in jest—but the Duchess of Sussex didn’t miss a beat.

“You’re a fat lady,” a woman at Mayhew said to Markle, pointing to her baby bump, according to People magazine. Everyone started laughing—in good nature, of course—including the duchess, who gave a cool-as-a-cucumber response.

“I’ll take it,” Markle said with a grin, before moving on to greet more people at Mayhew.

Watch this moment go down for yourself in the video, below. Start around the 29-second mark.

Obviously, it should go without saying that making comments about people’s bodies is never OK. And, thankfully, we’re moving into a space where the word “fat” is losing its power as an insult. Markle’s exchange with the woman at Mayhew, however, was completely benign, and it’s best not to look too deeply into it. We’re sure if actual body-shaming was happening, the duchess would be the first to shut it down.

Markle told well-wishers earlier this week that she’s due in late April/early May. Kensington Palace confirmed her pregnancy in October. “Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are very pleased to announce that The Duchess of Sussex is expecting a baby in the Spring of 2019,” the palace tweeted at the time. “Their Royal Highnesses have appreciated all of the support they have received from people around the world since their wedding in May and are delighted to be able to share this happy news with the public.”

Chrissy Metz Responds to Reports That She Called Alison Brie a 'B*tch' at the Golden Globes

A hot mic loose on tonight’s Golden Globes red carpet seemed to catch This Is Us star Chrissy Metz in an awkward moment. At the end of her interview on the Facebook Live pre-show, Metz was asked to help introduce Alison Brie. (The Glow actress was about to be interviewed elsewhere on the carpet.) But it, uh, didn’t go quite as planned.

“Do you know a girl named Alison Brie?” one of the co-hosts asked Metz. “Do I?” she replied. When the camera panned to focus on Brie, some close listeners seemed to hear Metz add, “She’s such a bitch.” The Internet, of course, soon took notice:

Brie hasn’t publicly responded to the moment, though Vanity Fair writer and reporter Nicole Sperling reports that she asked Brie about it. “Just asked Alison Brie about this,” she wrote on Twitter. “She had not heard about Metz’s comments and seemed very confused by the entire matter. ‘But why?,’ she asked. ‘I know her. I saw her on the carpet and I told her how beautiful she looked.'”

But while fans and tabloids dissected the clip, Metz took to Twitter to address the moment—and shut it down. “It’s terribly unfortunate anyone would think much less run a story that was completely fabricated! I adore Alison and would never say a bad word about her, or anyone!” she wrote in a retweet of an Us Weekly article about the incident. “I sure hope she knows my heart.”

Several of Metz’s friends and fans also took to social media to defend Metz. “Folks, I’ve known @ChrissyMetz for three years and I have NEVER heard her say a mean word about anyone. Move on,” director and producer Ken Olin wrote.

Kim Kardashian Called Out Tristan Thompson for Not Feeling Bad About Cheating

We know from a Keeping Up With the Kardashians clip released earlier this week that Kim Kardashian was not pleased with Tristan Thompson after news of him cheating on Khloé broke in April. (If you forget, Khloé was just days away from giving birth when this happened.) Kim was literally ready to fight Tristan when they first came face to face in Khloé’s delivery room after the scandal, but she held her tongue and kept the peace.

She didn’t hold back, though, during a conversation the family had off-camera with Tristan shortly after Khloé had her baby. In a new KUWTK clip, Kim recounts exactly what she said to Tristan during that heated discussion.

“I told him, ‘I think you’re more remorseful because it’s affecting your job,'” Kim said, referring to how Tristan was booed at Cleveland Cavaliers games after fans learned of his cheating. “I think he’s more embarrassed that he looks stupid. I think it’s more of that than anything.”

Watch Kim say all this for yourself, below:

Kim said that off-camera convo was “OK at the beginning.” “And then it got heated. It kinda took a left turn…Overall I think it was definitely necessary for us to just let out how we all felt.”

She continued, “He got mad because [Kris] was like, ‘You can make your decision. If you want to live this life of dating these Instagram [girls] and doing your thing, live that life.’ Mom’s like, ‘If this doesn’t work out with you guys, we’re always going to rise up.'”

Tune into this Sunday’s episode of KUWTK at 9 P.M. ET on E! to see how this all plays out.
