Meghan Markle's Lawyers Correct Several Tabloid Rumors Via Court Documents

Meghan Markle has been the subject of tabloid rumors and abuse since she started dating Prince Harry in 2016; a few months into their relationship, he even issued a public statement asking for the press to “reflect” before publishing damaging false stories.

And in October of this year, after the royal couple spoke out about the toll the media scrutiny has taken on them, they resorted to legal action against multiple publications. This week, the independent outlet Byline Investigates obtained some of the first court documents from the lawsuit, which show that the royals’ lawyers are determined to correct multiple libelous reports.

The documents take issue with several stories that were written about Markle’s relationship to her father, who did not attend her wedding in 2017. A private letter she wrote to him was later published without authorization in the the Mail on Sunday; Markle’s lawyers point out that only sections were printed in turn mischaracterizing its intent. Additionally, the court documents explain that Markle did not “ignore” her father after the wedding.

“The true position is that the Claimant [Meghan] has a long history of looking after her father’s welfare and trying to find solutions to any health problems… she did provide extensive financial support for him, as well as act as primary caregiver for her grandmother… her father did not telephone her to explain that he was not coming to her wedding,” the documents read. “Her team in Los Angeles did provide him with continued support for which he had expressed gratitude… she had reached out to him prior to the wedding and sought to protect him, as well as to ensure that he would be able to come to the wedding… she did not ignore him afterwards.”

The documents also correct multiple details that have been reported about the duchess’s life, including that she had renovated Frogmore Cottage to include a yoga studio, orangery, guest wing, copper bath, and tennis court. (The documents say these things were written “to portray the Claimant in a damaging light by suggesting that she had indulged in this series of absurdly lavish renovations.”) They also explain that despite what had been reported, Markle’s mother Doria Ragland was, in fact, invited to her New York baby shower but couldn’t attend “due to work commitments.” The papers also countered figures which claimed the shower cost $300,000 by sharing, “[it] actually cost a tiny fraction of the $300k falsely stated in the article.”

The legal team also noted the blatantly wrong and also racial undertones of headlines like, “Harry’s girl is (almost) straight outta Compton: Gang-scarred home of her mother revealed—so will he be dropping by for tea?” The documents read, “The statement that the Claimant lived or grew up in Compton (or anywhere near to it) is false. The fact that the Defendant chose to stereotype this entire community as being ‘plagued by crime and riddled with street gang’ and thereby suggest (in the first few days of her relationship being revealed) that the Claimant came from a crime-ridden neighborhood is completely untrue as well as intended to be divisive. The Claimant will also refer to the fact that the article cites her aunt as living in ‘gang-afflicted Inglewood’ in order to bolster this negative and damaging impression of where this (black) side of her family is said to come from. In fact, Ava Burrow (said to be ‘the actress’’ aunt’) is not her Aunt or any blood relation at all, a fact which if correctly stated would have undermined the narrative which the Defendant was intended to convey.”

Meghan Markle Is Suing a Tabloid for Publishing Her Private Letter

Meghan Markle is taking legal action against the tabloid Mail on Sunday for publishing one of her private letters, Prince Harry announced Tuesday, October 1, on the Sussex Official website.

A legal spokesperson representing the Duchess of Sussex offered some specific details on this case to Prince Harry, which were published in his statement:

“We have initiated legal proceedings against the Mail on Sunday, and
its parent company Associated Newspapers, over the intrusive and
unlawful publication of a private letter written by the Duchess of
Sussex, which is part of a campaign by this media group to publish
false and deliberately derogatory stories about her, as well as her
husband. Given the refusal of Associated Newspapers to resolve this
issue satisfactorily, we have issued proceedings to redress this
breach of privacy, infringement of copyright and the aforementioned
media agenda.”

It’s not explicitly said in the statement what letter caused this lawsuit, but the Guardian reports it’s one that Markle wrote to her estranged father, Thomas, after her wedding to Prince Harry in 2018.

In a lengthy statement, Prince Harry explained why he and Markle decided to sue Mail on Sunday. (It’s rare for the royal family to give any sort of attention to the press, let alone take legal action. Here’s a brief history of times they got lawyers involved.) The Duke of Sussex cited what happened to his mother, Princess Diana, as a big reason for going this route.

Apparently, Sex After 40 Is Worthy of International Tabloid News

“Melanie!” my friend messaged me, “the U.K. tabloids LOVE you!”

I first found out I’d become international tabloid news when this message along with a screen grab of an article from the Daily Mail popped up on my phone. The headline included a picture of me riding my bike and the word COUGAR. In all caps.

I immediately googled myself, my screen flooding with similar headlines next to grainy pictures of me taken from my Facebook page. The Sun, The Daily Star, The World News—over a dozen tabloids (so far) have picked up my most recent Glamour article pulling salacious quotes from the story I wrote about my sex life as a 41-year-old single woman. My personal favorite was the headline for The Mirror: “Cougar, 41, says sex life’s better than ever with ‘lonely cub’ tinder hook-ups.”

Earlier this month, I wrote about my dating life, which is apparently so shocking it’s newsworthy. As a woman in her 40s on Tinder, I quickly realized men my age, true to stereotype, weren’t interested. But after lowering my age minimum on the app, my inbox flooded with messages from twenty- and thirty-something men seemingly dying to date me. As I wrote about in my article, I have never had this much sex—let alone good sex—in my life. The international tabloid media apparently can’t handle this.

After discovering that my name would be associated with the word cougar (ALL CAPS) in any google search of me for all of eternity I felt a little violated (and slightly worried that all the press would ruin the hot streak currently tearing through my dating life…). One tabloid reached out to extend the courtesy of at least letting me choose the photos that would run with the article, rather than picking at random from my Facebook page, at the same time reassuring me they wouldn’t make me sound like a terrible person.

I know I’m not a terrible person! I know there’s nothing wrong with me or the relationships I share with other consenting adults, but apparently others think there is indeed something terrible about a woman in her 40’s having satisfying sex with men who think she’s amazing and treat her well. The fact this cougar story made headline news to begin with—in not just one but over a dozen tabloids in different countries—is what I find unbelievably disturbing. I knew the patriarchy is still alive and well, but I didn’t fully comprehend just how much our society hates aging women until my active and awesome sex life became a scandalous headline. Have none of these people ever seen The Graduate? Dating younger men isn’t new! Women have been doing it since the beginning of time.

The obsession with analyzing older women dating younger men is baffling—this isn’t National Geographic and women are not animals.

It sure seems as though society thinks we are, however. If we’re fat, we’re whales (or cows, depending on just how fat). If we’re assertive, we’re bitches. If we are any type of woman under age 35, we’re chicks. If we disagree with women, we’re catty. If we’re young and horny, we’re vixens. And if we’re horny, over 35 and prefer men who aren’t too damn tired to have sex now, we’re cougars. When society talks about women’s sex lives and our relationship statuses, they constantly rob us of our humanity and complexity and instead reduce us to a trait that has absolutely nothing to do with who we actually are, whether it’s our age, size, or sex drive.

A Tabloid Called the Hadids’ Books ‘Hot Accessories‘ and People Have Thoughts

Every mundane happenstance in the lives of Gigi and Bella Hadid has become tabloid fodder at some point. Whether they’re leaving the house or wearing a thing, commentary on their movements and whereabouts is guaranteed. Recently, a tweet from a large publication about yet another average Hadid activity—carrying books, to be specific—is drawing eyes for the wrong reason.

Back at Fashion Week, both Hadid sisters were photographed carrying the books they’re currently reading. For Gigi, it’s Albert Camus’ French classic The Stranger. For Bella, it’s Stephen King’s thriller The Outsider. As a former English major and present-day book hoarder, I was excited to get a peek of what the Hadids are reading in their spare time, in case I could add them to my own reading list—and then I moved on.

The New York Post, however, had other ideas about their handheld literature. In a tweet to a story about their outfits, the newspaper called out their paperbacks as the “hot new accessory of 2019.” The accompanying story went on to imply that the models coordinated their outfits to their books, because a model would prefer to carry her book instead of reading it.

Calling books a “hot new accessory” is wrong for, well, many reasons. Number one, books have been in circulation for literal centuries (look it up); “hot new” trends usually have an expiration date. Number two, calling their books out as accessories—ornamental and for show—somewhat implies that the Hadid sisters are more interested in the appearance of reading and less in the substance of reading itself. Even if you can appreciate how a nice book cover looks propped up next to a latte on Instagram, you have to admit that this language is a little absurd.

It might have been meant as a joke or a way to bring their reading choices into the conversation, but the tweet didn’t go over well. I wasn’t the only one who took notice and had questions—the reactions on Twitter were swift. Publishers like Scholastic Books and Little Brown Co, and social media users shared the same opinion on the matter: Books aren’t anything “new,” and designating them as an “accessory” because Gigi and Bella Hadid carried them is low-key condescending to both.

Trivializing women who happen to be successful and beautiful, and also enjoy immersing themselves in literature, also isn’t anything new. Take last winter for example, when Amber Heard shared a shocking story from her experience on the set of Aquaman. She enjoyed reading between takes while they were filming, until costar Jason Momoa would tear pages out of her books to get her attention. “He adopted this method of ripping out the pages of my book so I would pay attention to him,” Heard told ABC NEWs last year. “It would drive me crazy because I’d have 30 pages left and it would be gone.”

The Post has a history of designating normal and otherwise unremarkable things as “trends” just because they’re associated with women. (Remember when it tried to call cleavage a “movement” in 2017?) Whether Gigi and Bella Hadid had “stepped out” with their books or not, books are doing just fine without them. Print book sales actually rose 1.9 percent in 2018, according to Publisher’s Weekly. An endorsement from a celebrity from what to buy to how to vote never hurts—but in this case, that wasn’t the point.

So when a model leaves the house with a book in her hand, it’s not a “fashion moment.” It’s something they’re entitled to do like everyone else. Gigi and Bella, keep on keeping on with your books. Also, hit me up if you need a recommendation.

Kim Kardashian Called Out a Tabloid for Saying She Has 'Bad Skin'

Kim Kardashian is no stranger to tabloids playing on her name and likeness for clicks. At times, she welcomes the attention—but not so much when it comes to hurtful words about her skin.

The Daily Mail learned that lesson today after tweeting out a story with the caption, “Make-up mogul Kim Kardashian suffers bad skin day ahead of Master Class beauty seminar.” The images showed her out and about in LA with less-than-perfect skin and she was quick with a response. Her reply? “It’s psoriasis all over my face. ?” Any fan of Keeping Up with the Kardashians knows that Kardashian has been battling psoriasis—a chronic skin condition that can cause dryness, flakiness, inflammation, and discoloration—for years.

Fans quickly jumped to Kardashian’s defense and sympathized with her skin issues. “This is why I can’t be famous, you literally cannot be human,” wrote one Twitter user. “Do not let the media shake you. My mom has psoriasis, it took her a long time to accept it and not let the opinions of others shake her. Her psoriasis is still bad bc there are underlining issues she refuses to address, but people like you help start those convo. Thank you ❤️,” wrote another. One user succinctly pointed out that “psoriasis is no laughing matter.”

Back in December, Kardashian was crowd-sourcing her huge following for help about what to do to alleviate her psoriasis symptoms. “I think the time has come I start a medication for psoriasis,” she said. “I’ve never seen it like this before and I can’t even cover it at this point. It’s taken over my body. Has anyone tried a medication for psoriasis & what kind works best? Need help ASAP!!!”

Honestly, it’s pretty great that someone like Kardashian is so open about her skin issues, seeing as it’s one of the most relatable things about her life. (That goes for Kendall Jenner too.) And it certainly helps normalize the condition when she calls out a tabloid for mocking it. Well done all-around, Kimberly.

Demi Lovato Calls Out Tabloid Reports on Her Recovery: "It's No One's Business But Mine"

Demi Lovato has just shared an update on her recovery from what was reportedly a drug overdose in July—and clapped back at tabloids speculating about her health.

On Twitter Friday night (December 21), Lovato posted a series of tweets in which she defended her ongoing journey to sobriety. “I love my fans and I hate the tabloids,” she wrote. “Don’t believe what you read. People will literally make stuff up to sell a story.”

Lovato did not share where the rumors about her health came from, but she refuted them with a powerful statement: “I am sober and grateful to be alive and taking care of ME.”

She also added that when she wants to share her recovery journey in full, it will happen on her own terms: “Someday I’ll tell the world what exactly happened, why it happened and what my life is like today.. but until I’m ready to share that with people please stop prying and making up shit that you know nothing about. I still need space and time to heal.”

“Any ‘source’ out there that is willing to talk and sell stories to blogs and tabloids about my life isn’t actually a part of my life because most of the shit I see is soooooo inaccurate,” she said. “So newsflash: your ‘sources’ are wrong.”

She ended her message by reassuring fans that she is in a healthy place. “All my fans need to know is I’m working hard on myself, I’m happy and clean and I’m SO grateful for their support.”

“I’m so blessed I get to take this time to be with family, relax, work on my mind, body and soul and come back when I’m ready. I have my fans to thank for that. I’m so grateful, truly. I love you guys so fucking much ? thank you ??,” she continued.

Lovato has already opened up about her recovery after being hospitalized following the reported overdose in July. She shared her first update in a letter on her Instagram in September, which has since been deleted. “I have always been transparent about my journey with addiction,” she said. “What I’ve learned is that this illness is not something that disappears or fades with time. It is something I must continue to overcome and have not done yet.”

All reports from Lovato’s family since then suggest that the singer is getting healthy. In September, her mother, Dianna de la Garza, said in an interview that Lovato is “getting the help she needs” to recover. Later, her younger sister, Madison de la Garza, shared an update on her health in an October interview. “She’s working really hard on her sobriety, and we’re all so incredibly proud of her,” she said.
