Cheating Is Wrong. I'm Still Glad I Did It

Early into my marriage, my father learned that he could no longer call me on the phone and start talking openly. If my husband wasn’t home when my dad called, I’d answer the phone and say, “Hey, I can talk.” And we’d talk about the divorce we both knew I wanted, or else I’d just cry while he listened, furious and helpless. But it was rare that I answered the phone this way. My husband was always home.

We shared the most stifling homes together: first, my junior year dorm room and then, during my senior year, an apartment in downtown Annapolis that was so tiny we couldn’t even fit our sofa through the front door. We had to move it in by dragging it around the back, smashing in the glass rear door of the vacant apartment next door, and pushing the sofa through that apartment until it was free to come through the other side into ours. These were spaces that were never meant to house more than one person.

That was my husband’s position: We fought because we were jammed in unnaturally stifling circumstances, like factory-farm chickens packed so tightly that they have to be debeaked so they don’t peck each other to death. I was only a year away from graduation, at which point we’d have a second stream of income that would allow us to upgrade our space. This apartment and the fights for which it was responsible—all that was temporary. Soon, we’d move on to better things. “Tell your dad not to worry,” he’d say, which I never did.

My friends were sympathetic, but all of them put together didn’t have the resources I would have needed to leave and live alone. Plus, it would have cost me a couple thousand dollars to break our lease and put down a deposit somewhere else. Once, after a particularly bad fight, I attempted suicide. In the hospital, I knew no one would be able to see me outside of visiting hours; such was my desperation. But during the hospital visit, I was foggy and sad. When I got home, I was furious with myself. I’d wasted the last precious time I’d likely ever have to myself when I could have been hatching a plan.

In the end, I didn’t set the wheels in motion to end our relationship. Or at least it didn’t feel deliberate at the time. One day, serendipitously, my husband was too sick to join me to see a friend. I went alone, and the friend, whom I’ll call Jake, confessed his interest in me. Under any other circumstances, I likely would have shot him down, but I was starving.

The sex alone was nothing to write home about, but the whole assignation was an unprecedented hours-long span during which I felt free. Most of the time, I had nowhere to go and no money to spend when I got there. I had no option but to spend my free time with my husband, in whose presence it was difficult to imagine a future free of him. I was less thrilled by the physical act of infidelity than by the freedom it had rented for me. At Jake’s apartment, I could call my father and speak candidly to him, and I did.

“Hang on,” my dad said a few minutes into our conversation, during which Jake had put on headphones and was bobbing his head to some music. “How long can you talk?”

I barked out a laugh. Nothing was particularly funny, but a year of the nervous energy that characterized my marriage was bubbling up through the cracks any way it could. “I can talk all day,” I said, and then, still laughing, I started to cry. Jake peered over at me and hurriedly looked away. “I can talk to you all day about anything I want.”

When I got home to my husband that afternoon, I was blissed out. “Hope you’re feeling better,” I said.

Some well-meaning people want to know why I cheated and didn’t leave, and other even more well-meaning people understand why I didn’t feel like I could leave but still think I shouldn’t have cheated. I understand. And to an extent, I agree. It’s not a kind thing to cheat on somebody; it isn’t respectful. When you cheat, the other person has an understanding of your relationship that you’ve secretly decided you no longer share.

The Lizzie McGuire Reboot's Pilot Script Included Sex and a Cheating Scandal

The drama surrounding the Lizzie McGuire reboot, starring Hilary Duff, continues. Now, we may have a clue as to why the Disney+ show suddenly halted production back in January.

Fans of the original show, which ran on The Disney Channel from 2001-2004, were beyond thrilled when Duff announced that Lizzie was coming back during an event for Disney+ (the company’s new streaming platform) in August 2019. “The good news is, just like me and everybody who loved Lizzie and has grown up with her, Lizzie’s also grown up,” she said. “She’s older, she’s wiser, she has a much bigger shoe budget, which is super exciting. She has her dream job. She has kind of the perfect life right now.”

Details about the reboot soon trickled out and early clips were released, which only served to build the buzz. But then production was paused in January, and the original series creator, Terri Tinsky, stepped down as showrunner. “Fans have a sentimental attachment to Lizzie McGuire and high expectations for a new series,” a Disney spokesperson said. “After filming two episodes, we concluded that we need to move in a different creative direction and are putting a new lens on the series.” Rumors swirled that the reasoning was the show was not “family-friendly” enough for Disney+.

The Hollywood Reporter has seen the pilot script and reports that it “acknowledges the existence of sex with cheating as a central plot point,” which could lend credence to those rumors. “Our goal is to resume production and to tell an authentic story that connects to the millions who are emotionally invested in the character, and a new generation of viewers too,” a Disney+ spokesperson said, per THR.

In late February, Duff released a statement via her Instagram asking for the show to be moved to Hulu, which is also owned by Disney. “Was incredibly excited to launch Lizzie on D+ and my passion remains,” she wrote. “However, I feel a huge responsibility to honor the fans’ relationship with Lizzie who, like me, grew up seeing themselves in her. I’d be doing a disservice to everyone by limiting the realities of a 30-year-old’s journey to live under the ceiling of a PG rating.”

Who knows where Lizzie will land—but hopefully it will be somewhere the world can watch it.

Jed From The Bachelorette Just Spoke Out About Those Cheating Rumors

Aspiring musician and member of the pink blazer club Jed Wyatt is absolutely a frontrunner for Hannah Brown’s final rose on The Bachelorette this season. But he’s also at the center of a scandal: A singer named Haley Stevens alleged to People a few weeks ago that she and Wyatt were in a relationship when he left for the show and that he basically ghosted her.

Wyatt has stayed mum on the allegations—until now. He took to Instagram this week to address the backlash and ask the public for “patience and kindness.”

“Several of you have reached out with messages and questions. Please know I’m not able to answer right now, but as soon as I’m able to, I will,” he wrote alongside a photo of himself and his family. “Until then, I ask that you please understand how much the actions being taken towards myself, my family, the men on the show, and above all, Hannah, are affecting all of our mental and physical health.”

He continued, “It goes beyond what is said online. Threatening letters and phone calls have been sent to our homes. My parents and sister are being verbally attacked in public. I beg you to remember what seems like a harmless action is damaging to real people. I want to thank all of you who have reached out or reserved judgement until I am able to speak openly and I can only ask for your patience and kindness until then.”

His post was met with support from other contestants, including Garrett Powell, who commented, “Love you Jed. Keep fighting my man. You know the boys are all here for you!”

Some fans aren’t being as supportive, though. “Sorry but you brought this on yourself and your family. You shouldn’t have been so [deceiving] and the reason Hannah’s mental health was affected was YOU,” one person commented.

Hannah Brown hasn’t said much directly about this situation, but she did post a tweet that some interpret as shade toward Wyatt. She referred to a toast Wyatt’s mom made in this week’s episode (“When you stick to the truth, it’s beneficial to everyone”) and chimed in with, “Good toast. Good message. Cheers!”

Everything Khloé Kardashian Has Said About the Tristan Thompson Cheating Scandal

If you haven’t heard about the Khloé Kardashian-Tristan Thompson-Jordyn Woods cheating scandal yet, there’s a lot going on (also, welcome back from whatever deserted island you escaped to). Basically, Thompson, who’s been caught cheating before, and Woods—Kylie Jenner’s now-former BFF—allegedly kissed at a house party. The details are still vague, but it’s safe to say that Kardashian isn’t thrilled about what happened. She’s talked about the situation on social media several times—either explicitly referencing it or being a little less direct with a caption or quote we can read between the lines of. Below, a comprehensive list of all the times she’s mentioned (or hinted at) the drama:

Times She’s Explicitly Talked About the Scandal

A week after this story broke, on February 26, she posted a thank-you to her supportive followers on Twitter: “Hi loves, wanted you to know that I appreciate you! ?? I’ve been reading your kind words and they really are a blessing to me. I love you! Thank you Thank you! I’ll be back when I’m in the mood to chat with you all. Until then remember to be kind to one another ?”

She also (very problematically) called out Woods on March 1 after the latter went on Jada Pinkett Smith’s Red Table Talk to share her side of the story. “Why are you lying @jordynwoods ?? If you’re going to try and save yourself by going public, INSTEAD OF CALLING ME PRIVATELY TO APOLOGIZE FIRST, at least be HONEST about your story. BTW, You ARE the reason my family broke up!”

She followed that up with some clarification. “Tristan is equally to blame but Tristan is the father of my child,” she tweeted. “Regardless of what he does to me I won’t do that to my daughter. He has been addressing this situation PRIVATELY. If Tristan were to lie publicly about what conspired, then yes I would address him publicly as well.”

Kardashian seems to have realized that didn’t quite hit the right note, either, and came back with another message on March 2: “This has been an awful week & I know everyone is sick of hearing about it all (as am I). I’m a rollercoaster of emotions & have said things I shouldn’t have. Honestly, Tristan cheating on me & humiliating me, wasn’t such a shock as the first time.”

She continued, laying the blame squarely on Thompson. “What’s been harder & more painful is being hurt by someone so close to me,” she tweeted. “Someone whom I love & treat like a little sister. But Jordyn is not to be blamed for the breakup of my family. This was Tristan’s fault.”

“I have to move on with my life & count my blessings, my family, my health, & my beautiful baby True,” she finished.

Times She Might Have Hinted At It

On February 19, she commented on a post from Hollywood Unlocked’s Instagram about the incident with several speaking-head emojis. Her friend Malika Haqq also commented with “HARD FACTS.” Fans at the time took this as Kardashian confirming the rumor.

Kardashian has also posted several quotes to Instagram Story that may or may not be about this situation. On March 16, she uploaded a quote about deciding you want better for yourself and never looking back:

Instagram

But the most telling IG Story update came on February 21 when she posted these three quotes:

Two days later, she shared this quote saying it’s not our job to fix “fucked up” people.

The Lori Loughlin and Felicity Huffman College Cheating Scandal Is Too Fascinating

When I turned on my computer this morning, the last story I expected to see was “Lori Loughlin and Felicity Huffman Are Involved in a College Admissions Scandal,” but here we are. It’s 2019, and Lori Loughlin and Felicity Huffman are very much involved in a college admissions scandal.

Here’s what’s going on, according to CNN: A group of wealthy parents allegedly paid a college prep organization to take the SAT/ACT entrance exams on behalf of their children or to correct their answers. There’s also a second part to this scheme, in which college coaches were allegedly bribed into admitting wealthy students as recruited athletes, regardless of their actual abilities. Some defendants even had fake profiles created to make their children look like successful athletes, according to court documents.

Per TMZ, this was all funneled through a man named William Rick Singer, who would take parents’ requests—either to fix test scores or create fake athlete profiles—and contact the appropriate parties.

Fifty people total were arrested in this case, which federal prosecutors called Operation Varsity Blues: Two SAT/ACT administrators, one exam proctor, nine coaches at elite schools, one college administrator, and 33 parents with privileged backgrounds.

According to TMZ, Huffman, who played Lynette Scavo on Desperate Housewives, has been arrested but will be released on bond with the promise to appear in court. She’s specifically charged with felony conspiracy to commit mail fraud and honest services mail fraud, per court papers. CNN reports Huffman is accused of paying $15,000 to an organization that helped her daughter cheat on the SATs.

Loughlin, best known as Aunt Becky on Full House, has the same charges against her. She and her husband, Mossimo Giannulli, allegedly paid $500,000 to have their two daughters billed as recruits for the University of Southern California crew team, even though neither of them participates in the sport.

“There can be no separate college admissions system for the wealthy,” U.S. attorney for Massachusetts Andrew Lelling said at a press conference Tuesday, March 12. “And I will add there will not be a separate criminal justice system either.”

People, naturally, have so many thoughts about this case—and the Desperate Housewives and Full House jokes keep rolling in. Below, check out just a few reactions to this truly bonkers situation. We’ll update our post with more information as it comes in.

On Wednesday, 24 hours after news of the scandal broke, Lori Loughlin was arrested in Los Angeles after taking an overnight flight back to California from Canada. She faces a felony charge of conspiracy to commit mail fraud and honest services mail fraud.

On Thursday, March 14, Hallmark announced it was ending its working relationship with Loughlin, who’s been a mainstay on the network for years. “We are saddened by the recent news surrounding the college admissions allegations,” Hallmark’s parent company Crown Media said in a statement, according to The Hollywood Reporter. “We are no longer working with Lori Loughlin and have stopped development of all productions that air on the Crown Media Family Network channels involving Lori Loughlin, including Garage Sale Mysteries, an independent third-party production.”

This post has been updated.

Kylie Jenner Has Reportedly Accused Travis Scott of Cheating

When it rains in the Kardashian-Jenner house, it pours: TMZ is now reporting Kylie Jenner has accused Travis Scott of cheating. This comes roughly one week after news broke Tristan Thompson cheated on Khloé Kardashian with Kylie’s best friend, Jordyn Woods. It’s a lot to keep up with—pun completely intended.

So let’s focus on one thing at a time. Travis postponed his AstroWorld concert in Buffalo, New York on Thursday night (February 28), citing illness, but TMZ offers a different story. According to the outlet, Kylie accused Travis of cheating, and he opted to stay in Los Angeles to work things out with her. This whole saga reportedly started on Wednesday, when Travis flew home to surprise Kylie and their baby, Stormi, and she discovered “evidence” of his cheating. Per TMZ, a fight then ensued.

For what it’s worth, a rep for Travis tells People he strongly denies the cheating accusations. Kylie Jenner hasn’t commented on this situation—yet.

This is all unfolding as Jordyn Woods is set to appear on Jada Pinkett Smith’s Red Table Talk series and, presumably, open up about what happened with Tristan the evening they allegedly hooked up. She’s only talked about the situation once—and it was brief, at an event launching her false eyelash collaboration with Eylure. “Thank you guys for coming out and supporting me through everything that’s going on,” she said, according to a video captured by beauty influencer Jade Simone. “It’s been real, and Eylure has been super real with a project I’ve been working on for over nine months right now.”

Kylie, meanwhile, is reportedly torn about what happened. “Jordyn has been like Kylie’s sister,” a source tells People. “They were inseparable, and always together. Jordyn often helped Kylie with Stormi. Kylie was always so excited to have Jordyn around. It seems Kylie isn’t sure what to do, but it seems impossible for her to keep Jordyn around.”
