This Chart Breaks Down the Lack of Female Best Director Honorees at the Critics' Choice Awards Since 1995

The Critics’ Choice Awards provided an extremely fast follow-up to the Golden Globes, an event where Time’s Up dominated and women’s representation—especially in categories like directing—were hot topics of conversation. The Thursday evening award ceremony, however, lacked a lot of the punch of Sunday evening’s epic kick-off. Gone were the Time’s Up pins and speeches about women’s empowerment—with a few noteworthy exceptions like Gal Godot’s “See Her” award, featuring a rousing introduction by Wonder Woman director (and 2017 Glamour Woman of the Year) Patty Jenkins. There were some uncomfortable moments, like Elisabeth Moss getting played off after accepting her award for The Handmaid’s Tale.

For this award season, we’re eschewing some of the standard fare of previous years—consistent “Best Dressed” round-ups, for example—to focus on spotlighting the ways women are changing Hollywood, from record-breaking awards to the characters redefining how woman are portrayed on-screen. We’re also digging into the data behind key categories at all the major award shows. Just how often do women get nominated? And how often do they win? And are we getting better at being truly representative of the people watching TV and film?

Our reasoning is simple: we believe that better representation—both in front of and behind the camera—means healthier workplaces, and better storytelling.

In the case of the Critics’ Choice Awards, categories like directing are just as lacking when it comes to women as its peers. (The Golden Globes, for example, didn’t nominate a single female director this year, and a woman hasn’t won in this category since 1984.) We break down the honorees since 1995 in this chart. (Note that in some years, there was only a winner that was honored—no nominees—and that years correspond to the year in which film hit screens.) While Greta Gerwig was nominated for Ladybird, the 2017 winner in this category was Guillermo Del Toro. The only female Critics’ Choice Award winner for Best Director since 1995 was Kathryn Bigelow, for The Hurt Locker.

In addition, we looked at the recent data—from 2009-2017—across a variety of gender-neutral categories like Editing and Best Original Screenplay, and found that here, too, women are woefully underrepresented. Categories like Editing, Adapted Screenplay, and Director have had only one winner who identifies a female since 2009; there have been zero female winners for Original Screenplay in that time.

You can filter the results by clicking on any of the categories at the top, and you can also hover over any of the individual squares to see the nominee—male (in gray) or female (in peach)—and the work for which they were nominated.

To be sure, this data is just a limited window into women’s representation in the overall business—and also doesn’t factor in the inequality that women of color, for example, face—but even this limited window offers a stark portrait of how far we have to go. The good news, at least, is that we’re speaking up and getting loud. Change is sure to follow.

Selena Gomez Finally Breaks Her Silence on Justin Bieber: 'I Cherish People Who Have Really Impacted My Life'

It’s time to just face the facts: We now exist in a world where Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber are dating…again. Don’t know what I’m talking about? Let me catch you up to speed: Gomez was dating The Weeknd, the Northern Hemisphere’s Sexiest Human. However, something—I don’t know what, witchcraft?—propelled her to rekindle things with Bieber, a.k.a. the Boston Barefoot Bandit, shortly after leaving The Weeknd. Maybe it was the fact she and Bieber both attend Hillsong Church that brought her back in. Or his sweaty hockey jerseys. Or his timeless holiday anthem “Mistletoe.” Your guess is as good as mine, but it’s the truth: Jelena 3.0 is officially a go. These kissing pics (also involving sweaty clothes—blech) prove it.

Gomez and Bieber have remained mum about their recently-revived relationship, which is to be expected. Their 2011 puppy love was the subject of relentless tabloid scrutiny, so it’s understandable why they’d want to keep a relatively low profile this time around. That being said, Gomez did nod to Bieber—slightly—in her new interview with Billboard magazine.

Here’s what Gomez said after she was asked how Bieber came back into her life:

“I’m 25. I’m not 18, or 19, or 20. I cherish people who have really
impacted my life. So maybe before, it could have been forcing
something that wasn’t right. But that doesn’t mean caring for someone
ever goes away. And [that goes for] people in general. I mean, I grew
up with Demi [Lovato]. Nick and Joe [Jonas] and Miley [Cyrus] — we’ve
gone through seasons in our lives. I don’t think it’s as serious as
people make things out to be half the time. It’s just my life. I grew
up with all of these people, and it’s so cool to see where everybody
is. It comes back to the idea of me remaining full. I think a true
representation of love is beyond just yourself. It’s me going to get
coffee earlier this morning and talking with a woman who was
celebrating her birthday and going to Disneyland for the first time. I
told her about my favorite things there, and she got excited, and then
I got excited because she was excited. The littlest things are
impactful.”

OK, this is essentially a non-response response, but read between the lines. Gomez didn’t say Bieber wasn’t back in her life. Plus, earlier in the interview, Gomez said she’s been “hanging out with an old friend” who helps keep her in the moment. “Basically every conversation, we want it to be intentional,” she explained. “Meaningful conversations remind you that it’s all within where we are. It’s not about what’s happening with everything else.” Hmmm…we wonder who she’s talking about?! Maybe the person who she went on this totally casual, ’50s-esque bike ride with? That’s where my money’s at.

Uma Thurman Breaks Her Silence on Harvey Weinstein

Celebrities took to Instagram to share photos of their Thanksgiving celebrations on Thursday, but actress Uma Thurman’s post had a notably different tone than the others. In it, she broke her silence about former Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein for the first time, whom dozens of women have come forward against with allegations of sexual harassment and assault.

If you remember way back at the beginning of November, a video of Thurman’s chilling response to a red carpet journalist’s questions about the Weinstein allegations went viral. Rather than coming up with something in the heat of the moment, the Kill Bill actress, whose work with director Quentin Tarentino was produced by the Weinstein Company, had an incredibly composed response. However, it was the way she said it that caught people’s attention.

“I don’t have a tidy sound bite for you,” Thurman said in the clip. “Because I have learned—I am not a child, and I have learned that when I’ve spoken in anger, I usually regret the way I express myself. So I’ve been waiting to feel less angry, and when I’m ready, I’ll say what I have to say.”

Watch it here:

Which brings us to yesterday, when Thurman finally felt ready to break her silence.

Sharing a photo of herself as Kill Bill‘s Beatrix Kiddo (AKA “The Bride,” a character who methodically tortured each of her abusers with pleasure), Thurman wrote, “I am grateful today, to be alive, for all those I love, and for all those who have the courage to stand up for others.

“I said I was angry recently, and I have a few reasons, #metoo, in case you couldn’t tell by the look on my face. I feel it’s important to take your time, be fair, be exact, so…Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!”

Then she clarified in parentheses: “Except you Harvey, and all your wicked conspirators—I’m glad it’s going slowly—you don’t deserve a bullet.”

The ending? “Stay tuned.”

Kris Jenner Breaks Her Silence About Kylie's Reported Pregnancy

The Internet pretty much exploded on Friday when news went viral that Kylie Jenner is reportedly pregnant. Twitter went wild with reactions to the news—but it seemed like the only silent parties in this situation were the Jenner/Kardashian clan (including Kylie) and Kylie’s boyfriend and, reportedly the father of the child, Travis Scott. Kylie has been hanging out with her friends and Snapchatting, Kendall is in Italy walking in Milan Fashion Week, and Kris is sitting at the shows watching her daughter do her thing. For hours we heard nothing from the family, but the Kardashian-Jenner matriarch has finally spoken out.

This morning Kris was sitting front row at the Bottega Veneta fashion show when a few reporters were able to ask her some questions. According to The Cut, when asked if she knew that the news would break while she was in Milan, she said, “I just woke up this morning. She’s not confirmed anything. I think it’s kind of wild that everyone is just assuming that that’s just happening.” When the reporter pushed further and asked if she knew the rumor was about to start, she said, “Something happens every single day. You never know what is going to break at any moment.”

Well, she didn’t deny it—but she didn’t confirm it either. Kris has a point when she says Kylie hasn’t confirmed anything yet, and until Kylie does, nothing’s 100-percent certain.

Kris echoed the sentiment in her statement in the Hollywood Reporter: “It wouldn’t be the family if something didn’t happen every single day.”

It does seem like something happens in the family every single day—but not something this big. If the reports are true, they’re perfectly timed to match up with the Keeping Up With the Kardashians 10th anniversary special, which airs on Sunday, and the next season of the show, which begins next week on October 1. It might just be a coincidence, but it could also signal that we’re about to learn a whole lot about this news in the upcoming season—along with Kim’s decision to have a third baby via surrogate.

Francia Raisa Breaks Her Silence on Donating Her Kidney to Selena Gomez

Selena Gomez took to Instagram Wednesday morning to reveal that she recently underwent a kidney transplant. The procedure—which Gomez needed because of lupus—happened over the summer, and her friend, actress Francia Raisa, was the donor.

“There aren’t words to describe how I can possibly thank my beautiful friend Francia Raisa. She gave me the ultimate gift and sacrifice by donating her kidney to me. I am incredibly blessed,” Gomez wrote on Instagram. The accompanied photo, which shows Gomez and Raisa at the hospital, has over 5 million likes and several-thousand comments—and you can feel the love bursting through each of them.

And now, Raisa is opening up about the transplant. The 29-year-old posted the same photo to her own Instagram and wrote about her love for Gomez.

“I am beyond grateful that God would trust me with something that not only saved a life, but changed mine in the process,” she wrote. “This was part of our story, and we will share it soon, but what is important now is that this is not the only story.” She then included some information about lupus awareness and ended her post with, “Love you sis, so glad we’re on this journey together.”

See her post for yourself, below:

Gomez’s struggle with lupus became public in 2015. Last fall, she took a break to deal with anxiety and depression triggered by the autoimmune disease. She returned to the spotlight in November 2016 and has put out consistent work since then, including her two new singles, “Bad Liar” and “Fetish.”

“[The transplant] was what I needed to do for my overall health,” Gomez also wrote on Instagram. “I honestly look forward to sharing with you, soon my journey through these past several months as I have always wanted to do with you.”
