Paul Ryan Just Announced He Won't Seek Reelection in November—Read His Full Statement

After a morning filled with speculation, House Speaker Paul Ryan (R–Wis.) officially announced that he will not be seeking reelection in November and will retire from the U.S. House of Representatives in January at the end of his current term. The 48-year-old has served in Congress for almost 20 years, and in a statement he called his job “one of the greatest two honors of my life.”

According to The New York Times, the decision came as a surprise to many in the Republican party, since as late as last week Ryan hosted a donor retreat in Texas. In Ryan’s official statement, he stressed that his desire to spend more time with his family ultimately drove his decision. In prepared remarks announcing his retirement, he spoke of losing his own father at 16 and added, “I just don’t want to be one of those people looking back at my life thinking I wish I’d spent more time with my kids. If I spend another term, they will only know me as a weekend father.”

He went on to speak about what he believes have been great achievements during his time in office: “Probably the two biggest achievements for me are, first, the major reform of our tax code for the first time in 36 years, which has already been a huge success for this country, and that’s something I’ve been working on in my entire adult life. Something I’ve focused on since becoming speaker is to rebuild our nation’s military, and after addressing our military readiness crisis, that was a top priority we got done last year as well. These I see as lasting victories that will make this country more prosperous and more secure for decades to come.”

President Trump, who hasn’t always been the most vocal supporter of the speaker, took to Twitter to give his thoughts: “Speaker Paul Ryan is a truly good man, and while he will not be seeking re-election [sic], he will leave a legacy of achievement that nobody can question. We are with you Paul!”

While Ryan may fancy the new tax bill as his lasting legacy, others will likely look back on his time in office with a bit of a different lens. Ryan has repeatedly attempted to defund Planned Parenthood, for example; then there were his attempts to overturn the Affordable Care Act—both moves that were widely criticized by professionals in the medical community as well as progressive politicians and voters alike. The new proposed health care plan, for example, would also have reportedly left millions of Americans uninsured.

Many had hoped that Ryan would be a stabilizing force in the Trump administration—someone who could stand up to the volatility of a president with no background in governing. But Ryan often evaded questions about Trump’s tweets, saying in a CNN town hall: “Do I wish there would be a little less tweeting? Of course, I do.” As former presidential candidate Evan McMullin wrote on Twitter, “Paul Ryan was the hope of the GOP, but he wilted when his leadership was needed most. Instead of checking Trump, he helped normalize him.”

Speculation in D.C. will now turn to who might replace Ryan as speaker of the house, but that would presume that Republicans maintain their majority in the November midterm elections—something that’s not a certainty. Others are wondering if this means more Republican retirements lie ahead. As for Ryan’s future, he’s not giving any clues outside of spending time with his family. But before Donald Trump arrived on the scene in 2016, he was considered a front-runner for the Republican nomination in 2020. Perhaps he will entertain thoughts about the highest office in the land once again? Some of his Twitter fans are ready to sign up and campaign right now. We will all just have to wait and see.

Céline Just Announced Hedi Slimane As Its Next Creative Director

When we learned that Céline’s hugely influential creative director, Phoebe Philo, would be leaving the brand after 10 years back in December, her replacement was a mystery. But it was finally announced on Sunday morning that Hedi Slimane, formerly creative director of Dior Homme and Saint Laurent, will take over as the artistic, creative and image director. He will oversee women’s fashion, leather goods, and accessories—and introduce menswear to the brand. Philo’s final collection will be shown in March, and Slimane’s first presentation of men’s and women’s clothing will take place in September.

“I am enchanted; what a great choice,” Karl Lagerfeld told WWD of Slimane’s hire. “It will be great.”

Slimane, 49, started his fashion career at Yves Saint Laurent before he was hired by LVMH in 2000 to create Dior Homme, where he was known for his sharp tailoring. Seven years later he made his way back to YSL and rebranded it as Saint Laurent, where he was criticized for featuring a shockingly thin model in a Spring/Summer ’15 British advertisement. (The ad was banned for being “irresponsible.”)

While at Saint Laurent, Slimane introduced his rock-and-roll style to the brand. “At Saint Laurent, Mr. Slimane became famous for collections seemingly aimed at the young and the fretless, including the musicians, models, and hangers-on he met in Los Angeles, where he made his home and where he relocated the Saint Laurent studio, The New York Times wrote in an article Sunday announcing Slimane’s hire.

Under Philo, who was named British Fashion Council’s Designer of the Year in 2005 and 2010, and the CFDA’s International Designer of the Year in 2011, Céline was known for making beautiful, androgynous clothing and leather goods for working women—though Slimane’s new direction might shift the aesthetic even more toward the millennial demographic. He’s moving fast, too: According to WWD, “the first freestanding Céline men’s boutiques are to open as early as 2019.”

According to the New York Times, Slimane will work from Los Angeles, like he did when he oversaw Saint Laurent. There will also be a studio and atelier in Paris, but Philo’s London studio will close.

America Ferrera Is Expecting Her First Child—and She Announced It in the Cutest Way

One celebrity is starting off the new year with something to look forward to: Actress America Ferrera is expecting her first child with husband Ryan Piers Williams.

The announcement came in the form coordinated Instagram posts, in which the two of them wore festive 2018 glasses while Ferrera held up a little gray baby onesie with the words “Más besos (por favor)” (“More kisses (please)”). The Superstore actress captioned the photo: “We’re welcoming one more face to kiss in 2018! Wishing you #MásBesos in the New Year! #babybesos#HappyNewYear.” Williams reposted Ferrera’s ‘gram with a cute caption of his own. “Making room for new and beautiful things to come in 2018!#happynewyear.”

The couple, who celebrated 12 years together over the summer, met at the University of Southern California, when Ferrera was an actress in Williams’ student film. The two got engaged in 2010, and married in 2011.

Ferrera’s 2018 celebrations were quite different than last year’s: If you remember, Ferrera called it an early night on December 31, 2016, while Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants (and real-life) BFFs were ringing in the new year. They called her via FaceTime to say hi—or, as Ferrera would (jokingly) claim later on James Corden’s Late Late Show, to make her jealous.

Her 2017 came to quite an epic ending, though. On top of this announcement, Ferrera also capped out the year with an appearance in Jay Z’s “Family Feud” music video, which was directed by Ava DuVernay and featured an incredible cast of women including Thandie Newson, Mindy Kaling, Rashida Jones, Constance Wu, Brie Larson, and Rosario Dawson, among others. Not too bad at all.

Congratulations to the couple!

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's Wedding Date Has Been Announced

Update: This morning, Kensington Palace revealed the exact date Meghan Markle will wed Prince Harry: May 19, 2018. “His Royal Highness Prince Henry of Wales and Ms. Meghan Markle will marry on 19th May 2018,” the statement (via Twitter) read. “Today’s announcement follows earlier confirmation of the month of the wedding and its location at St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle.”

Original Post: It’s been a whirlwind month for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. The couple officially announced their engagement on Monday (November 27) and completed a full day of press—including a photo call and 20-minute sit-down interview, where we learned how Prince Harry proposed and what Princess Diana would’ve thought of Markle. Cameras even caught the couple goofing off after the interview wrapped, further confirming their adorable love for each other.

Of course, a royal engagement means a royal wedding is in our future—and if Prince William and Kate Middleton’s nuptials from 2011 are any indication, we’re in for a no-expense-spared extravaganza. We learned yesterday that Markle and Prince Harry’s wedding will take place next spring, but Kensington Palace released a bulletin on Tuesday (November 28) offering more information. We now have a date (May 2018) and a location (St. George’s Chapel).

“The marriage of His Royal Highness Prince Harry of Wales and Ms. Meghan Markle will take place at St. George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle in May, 2018,” the release reads. “Her Majesty The Queen has granted permission for the wedding to take place at the Chapel. The Royal Family will pay for the wedding. Further details about the wedding will be announced in due course.”

Check out the release for yourself, below:

These sparse details alone confirm their wedding will be stunning—and far more opulent than Prince Harry’s proposal, which apparently happened during a cozy night in while he and Markle were roasting a chicken. “It was just an amazing surprise. It was so sweet and natural and very romantic. He got on one knee,” Markle said.

Let the countdown to May 2018 begin.

France Just Announced a National Plan to Combat Sexual and Domestic Violence Against Women

On Saturday, French President Emmanuel Macron announced a national plan to combat sexism, sexual violence, and domestic violence against women. The policies he outlined include simplifying the process for reporting rape, implementing additional public safety measures for women, and educating schoolchildren about pornography. Meanwhile, women across France gathered for demonstrations against domestic and sexual violence in a rousing observance of Saturday’s designation as the International Day for Elimination of Violence Against Women.

During his presidential campaign in 2016, Macron made gender equality a part of his platform. So although his policies weren’t directly prompted by the reignited #MeToo movement—or France’s viral equivalent: “#BalanceTonPorc”, meaning “out your pig”—that picked up after the wave of allegations against Harvey Weinstein, they’re being brought forth at a time when sexual assault and sexual violence is at the forefront of an incredibly necessary cultural conversation.

In Saturday’s speech, Macron began by observing a minute of silence for the 123 women killed in France by a partner or ex-partner in 2016. According to the BBC, an additional 225,000 were physically or sexually abused by their spouses, although fewer than 20 percent filed a report.

“It’s indispensable that the idea of shame changes sides, that the Republic cleanses its own concept of shame; that the everyday criminals who harass, insult, touch, attack never be excused, but identified, vilified, brought to justice, condemned as firmly as they should be,” he said. “France must no longer be one of those countries where women live in fear.”

As a part of the initial measures to protect women and make reporting sex crimes easier, Macron announced that women who experience sexual assault and harassment will be allowed to make their first statement from their homes—prior to bringing criminal charges up with the police—through a 24-hour online service. Through it, they’ll be able to speak to trained police and find out how to report their attack.

Public safety measures are also included in the plans. “On demand” bus stops are in the works to allow women to stop a bus at any point along a route so they can get home safely at night. An app for victims of online stalking will also be available.

According to the BBC, Macron also announced an awareness campaign to educate secondary school students about pornography.

Calling France’s society “sick with sexism,” he announced further proposals for laws that criminalize street harassment as well as extending the statute of limitation for the rape of minors from 20 years to 30 years.

Macron also stated that he wants to set the country’s age of sexual consent at 15, which, according to the BBC, aligns with the country’s legally fixed age of sexual maturity (France currently has no age of consent).

According to Reuters, French feminist group Osez le Féminisme stated that the only thing standing in the way of making these changes a reality is adequate funding from the government—which they don’t currently believe is the reality. “Without funding, any communication, training, awareness or help plan for the victims will be useless,” the group said.

France is notable, however, for making an effort to change the culture surrounding sexual and domestic violence. Back in America, U.S. President Donald Trump—who has been accused of sexual assault himself—recently refused to defend Alabama’s Republican Senate candidate Roy Moore, who multiple women have said pursued sexual relations with them when they were teenagers and he was in his 30s.
