Uzo Aduba Shares Her Family's Red Stew Recipe

In our new series That Thing I Always Cook, women you admire offer up the story behind their go-to recipe—something we could all use right now. Next up: actress Uzo Aduba—who can currently be seen taking on the historic role of Congresswoman Shirley Chisolm in FX on Hulu’s new miniseries, Mrs. Americashares how to make her beloved Nigerian Red Stew. It’s not the quickest dish to make, but rather one that requires time and patience. Perfect for quarantine, perhaps?

After starring in seven seasons of Netflix’s Orange is the New Black, Uzo Aduba is used to doing interviews. But it’s not typical that the Emmy winner gets to speak on the record about her favorite recipes. “I love to cook, and rarely do I get to talk about Nigerian cooking,” she says from her Brooklyn apartment. Aduba was born in Boston to Nigerian parents, and grew up in a home brimming with Nigerian food and culture. “It was a very traditional household in terms of language, dress, and culture, and food played a big part.” That food included Red Stew, a Nigerian dish that Aduba describes as similar to spaghetti sauce, but heartier and more savory.

Aduba learned to cook from her mother, who regularly manned meals for the family. “With five kids, my mom wasn’t making 900 dishes a night—we were going to get one thing, and it was going to be a Nigerian dish.” The actress started cooking by observing her mom, graduated to the task of chopping tomatoes and peppers, and then, as she got older and taller, won the honor of overseeing the pot, which helped hone her instincts about the dishes they prepared.

“My mom can smell a dish and know if it’s ready—she doesn’t even need to taste it. She could just look and tell if the tomatoes needed to cook more or the color wasn’t quite where it needed to be. That’s a very African way [of cooking]. I used to not know what she meant, but now I can smell all the flavor blended together,” she says.

While Aduba cooks food of every cuisine, vegetable-heavy Nigerian food is a must for her. “I grew up on it, so I have to have it. It’s a part of my staple [diet].”

Aduba’s recipe for Red Stew has never been written down—it’s been perfected by the actress and her mother over the years—so she’s is sharing the hearty tomato, red pepper and onion sauce with Glamour from memory. “If you’re looking to try Nigerian food, whether you have an adventurous spirit or you’re a little more tame, this is the dish. I’ve never met a person in my life who didn’t like red stew and rice,” she says.

But make sure you have freezer space, Aduba warns. “I’m sure there are people who know how to make a serving for four or two, but we don’t really cook like that—we cook in bulk,” she says with a laugh. “Most Nigerians I knew growing up were cooking for a lot of people. In my house alone, we were cooking for seven.” Aduba herself makes the dish every two to three months, because, “no joke, that’s how much will be left over,” she says. Below, Uzo’s beloved recipe, in her own words.

Uzo Aduba’s Red Stew

Servings:

“Makes…a lot”

Ingredients

8 red bell peppers (5 loosely chopped for blending, 3 chopped to bite size pieces)

6 tomatoes, chopped

8 white onions (5 loosely chopped for blending, 3 sliced and cut into thirds)

The Royal Family's Christmas Decorations Are the Polar Opposite of the White House's

The royal family revealed their Christmas decorations for Buckingham Palace on Tuesday (December 4), and they’re so cheery. And festive. And everything you could possibly want out of Christmas decorations. The trees are adorned with white twinkly lights; little crowns are scattered everywhere; and the staircases are covered in greenery with multicolored ornaments. It’s exactly the scene you need to get into the holiday spirit.

The decorations are a stark contrast to the White House’s Christmas setup, which, sure, is festive—but it’s also a little scary. Need we remind you of the red Christmas tree room, which looks like it was inspired by The Shining, Suspiria, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, and just straight-up blood?

Here’s a few photos, in case you forgot.

Now, compare this to Buckingham Palace’s decorations. No scary red trees in sight!

Twitter is definitely noticing the differences between Buckingham Palace and the White House’s takes on Christmas.

“So this is what it looks like when your leaders don’t choose ‘dystopian holiday hellscape’ as a decorating theme, huh?” tweeted one person. “Now that’s tasteful compared to the one at America’s White House,” tweeted some else, savagely.

Check out some more reactions for yourself, below:

It’s been a busy year for the royal family. Kate Middleton gave birth to her third child, Prince Louis, in April. Meghan Markle and Prince Harry tied the knot in May, followed by a whirlwind royal tour of Australia, Fiji, New Zealand, and Tonga in the fall. Markle is also expecting her first child, due in spring 2019. The entire royal family is reportedly spending Christmas together.

The Royal Family's Birthday Tributes to Prince Harry Are the Sweetest

Prince Harry celebrated his 34th birthday yesterday, and we’re still dying to know what incredibly thoughtful gift Meghan Markle thought up for her husband. Although that might remain a secret (for now, at least), the Royal Family did shower Prince Harry with a ton of love on Saturday by posting sweet tributes to him on social media.

On the @theroyalfamily Instagram account, a dashing photo of the prince went up, along with a caption that read, “Wishing HRH The Duke of Sussex a very Happy Birthday!‬ #HappyBirthdayHRH.” Thousands of comments and “happy birthdays!” followed from all over the world, naturally.

The Kensington Palace’s official Instagram also posted a picture of Prince Harry and wrote a thank-you to everyone who had sent him birthday wishes. “Thank you everyone for your lovely messages on The Duke of Sussex’s birthday! #HappyBirthdayHRH,” the caption said.

2018 was a huge year for Prince Harry: He got married to Markle and staged one of the most stunning weddings in royal history. Since then, he’s been enjoying a whirlwind few months with his new bride, attending several PDA-filled public engagements, breaking into song occasionally, bringing new four-legged members into his family, and cheekily dodging questions about kids.

Prince Harry’s 34th year is already looking like a significant one: He and Markle recently announced that they’ll embark on their first royal tour together that will include visits to Fiji, Australia, the Kingdom of Tonga, and New Zealand in October.

Markle also celebrated her first birthday as a royal recently: She turned 37 on August 4. Like the thoughtful duchess she is, Markle sent notes and photos from Kensington Palace to everyone who’d wished her well (similar mailers went out after the Royal Wedding).

It’s a strong start to what’s undoubtedly going to be a memorable year. Happy birthday, Harry!

The Cast of 'This Is Us' Reveal What Happens Next After the Pearson Family's Intense Therapy Session

This Is Us rang in 2018 with quite the emotional episode—but would you expect anything less? (Read our recap here for a full breakdown.) For the actors, it was just as intense IRL. “I remember thinking, ‘Wow, these are really authentic moments,'” Justin Hartley tells us. “They’re talking about really hard things to people they love. They don’t want to hurt each other, but it’s going to hurt.”

One moment in particular—a 12-minute scene of Kevin’s family therapy session without a break in the action—is rarely done on television. “You can’t pick up that momentum [if you stop at any point when filming], so we just did take after take all the way through,” Hartley explains. “I don’t think anybody dropped a line.”

The scene—which prompted a devastated Rebecca to admit that Randall was an easier child to love than closed-off Kevin—also revealed that Kate’s addiction to food runs deeper than anyone was truly aware. “We all have struggles in our lives, and I think being honest with the people we love is the only way to face those issues,” Chris Sullivan says. “Being transparent and honest [with yourself and others is] really [the only way to] overcome something like that.”

Adds Hartley, “It’s a life-long struggle. It’s one moment at a time. It’s the same with Kevin. He knows the man he wants to be, but he just puts a lot of pressure on himself when he doesn’t need to.”

PHOTO: NBC

The episode ended on an uplifting note for the big three, but the hard work is just beginning. While it remains to be seen if Kevin has a future with ex-wife Sophie, Hartley played coy but noted that “you’ll be seeing her again.” Still, Sophie isn’t the only woman in Kevin’s life that he’ll need to work on repairing a relationship with. His sister-in-law Beth isn’t quite ready to forgive him after he unknowingly drove under the influence with her daughter in the backseat of his car. “There is going to be a tension there until [they really sit down to talk things out], Susan Kelechi Watson tells us. “It’s not like she hasn’t had tension with him before, but this was definitely a lot more serious. She’s definitely not as willing as Randall is [to take the stance that], ‘Oh, he’s getting help.’ She still feels like it’s all about Kevin in a way. There is going to have to be some kind of a stronger resolution for them.”

With only seven episodes remaining in season two, it remains to be seen if Beth and Kevin will have that opportunity, but one thing we do know is that the details about Jack’s death are closer to being revealed. “All I can say is be prepared,” Milo Ventimiglia says cryptically. “And yet, I know there is no real preparation for something like that. At the same time, we all know it’s coming. Just remember, it doesn’t mean the character is leaving or I’m leaving. It’s just one chapter in Jack’s book, and there’s a lot more to learn about the man.”

Speaking of Jack, Ventimiglia says that as vulnerable as we’ve seen the character this season, he actually has a tough time pulling back that emotion. “Jack is not one to cry, and I myself am more emotional than Jack. The hardest moments for me are where I personally have to hold my emotion in. When Jack opens up about his drinking problem [to Kate]…I’m welling up thinking about the experience, but thank God I have partners like [teen Kate] Hannah Zeile, [10-year-old Kate] Mackenzie Hancsicsak, and all the kids both ages. And Mandy, Mandy, Mandy…she’s a God send.”

The Royal Family's Best Moments From 2017

Although it might have been a dumpster fire for the rest of us, 2017 looked like it was certainly a wonderful year for the royal family: There was Pippa Middleton‘s instantly-iconic May wedding, Kate Middleton‘s pregnancy announcement about Baby No. 3 in September, and last, but very certainly not least, the December news of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle‘s engagement and their subsequent first Christmas together. (Now if only we could fast-forward to the May 19, 2018, wedding date.) Between these events, of course, were adorable royal toddler birthdays and a very special wedding anniversary.

Here’s a look back at 22 of the royal family’s best moments from 2017, from a queenly encounter with an elephant to a Vanity Fair interview that set the internet ablaze. Read on, royal-watchers: there’s lots a good stuff ahead—and even more to come in the new year. Let the royal baby watch begin!

April 10, that time Queen Elizabeth shook hands with Donna the elephant.

OK, really she was just feeding Donna at the opening of the Whipsnade Zoo’s new Elephant Centre. But it looks like they’re introducing themselves, right? The zoo also introduced a baby elephant named “Elizabeth” for the Queen in honor of Her Majesty’s 90th birthday in 2016.

There was a lot to curtsy about in 2017, but one of our favorites is the curtsy that Kate Middleton did for Queen Elizabeth on Easter Sunday. The love on Kate’s face is so real.

April 30, when the royal family celebrated Princess Charlotte’s second birthday.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge unveiled a new photo of their daughter for the occasion, in which Charlotte looked every bit the royal princess she is.

May 19, when Pippa Middleton got married—and the day was stolen by the adorable Prince George and Princess Charlotte.

We’re guessing their aunt wasn’t even mad that her niece and nephew captured a few hearts on her big day because they were just so hilariously cute and entertaining.

July 16, when Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall turned 70.

And the royal family posted this photo of her smiling next to Prince Charles to prove it.

July 17, when Kate Middleton joked about having “more babies”

Fast-forward to December, and we all know that Kate Middleton is pregnant. But remember back in July when we didn’t, and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge took Prince George and Princess Charlotte to Poland on the family’s second official outing, and Kate made a joke about having “more babies”? Yeah, that was fun.

July 19, when Princess Charlotte gifted the world an adorable royal curtsy.

It happened when the couple visited Germany. You have to click here to watch the video. But her form! Clearly, she is learning from the best.

July 21, when Prince George got his very own birthday portrait.

You know what they say: what you do for one kid you have to do for the other. So Will and Kate couldn’t not have an official birthday portrait taken of George since they did one for Charlotte. And we’re here for it.

July 8, when Duke William and Prince Harry opened up about Prince Diana publicly for the first time.

Timed to the 20th anniversary of their mother’s death, Will and Harry participated in the TV documentary Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy and released some never-before-seen photos from their lives growing up with Diana.

August 2, when Prince Philip retired after 22,219 solo engagements.

Well sort of. It was his final solo appearance at an official event, which is basically the same thing. Since 1952, the Duke “has carried out 22,219 solo engagements, 637 solo overseas visits, given 5,496 speeches, and authored 14 books,” according to the royal family’s official instagram account. Now that he has some more free time, maybe he’ll reconsider watching The Crown?

September 4, when Kate announced that she was pregnant with Baby No. 3.

Kensington Place took to social media to break the news that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were “very pleased” to be growing their family by one more baby. Apparently “the Queen and members of both families are delighted with the news.” The baby is expected to arrive sometime in April 2018, but William has hinted it could be sooner.

September 5, 2017, when Meghan Markle announced that she and Prince Harry are just “two people who are really happy and in love.”

Day 1: Invictus Games Toronto 2017

Before news of their engagement broke, Meghan Markle gave a revealing interview to Vanity Fair in which she proclaimed for the world to read that she and Harry were “really happy and in love,” and then we did not stop talking about it for months.

September 7, when Prince George showed up for the first day of school.

Look at him shaking hands with a teacher while proud dad Will looks on! Has a more polite student ever existed? And then the family upped the cute by thanking “everyone for all of the kind messages they have received.”

Day 3: Invictus Games Toronto 2017

The blessed moment happened at the Invictus Games in Toronto. They were first spotted at the opening ceremony, though they sat in different seats. But eventually, we got the PDA we’d all been hoping for when they were spotted holding hands and later shared a quick kiss in the stands.

October 31, when Prince Harry joined Michelle Obama to surprise a group of Chicago students.

The former First Lady and Harry joined former President Barack Obama at Hyde Park Academy in Chicago, which is across the street from the future location of the Obama Presidential Center on the South Side of Chicago. Don’t you love this transatlantic bromance?

November 20, when Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip marked their 70th wedding anniversary.

The palace released four portraits of the long-long-time couple, taken at Windsor Palace, to mark the occasion. The Queen and Philip married at Westminster Abbey on November 20, 1947.

November 27, when Prince Harry and Meghan Markle finally announced their engagement.

After months (and months and months) of speculation, the world celebrated when the royal family finally announced the engagement of Harry and Meghan.

And then we instantly began dissecting everything about the interview they gave to the BBC right after.

December 4, when Kate wore Princess Diana’s tiara.

Hard to believe that Kate has only worn a tiara six times, which made us all the more glad to see her with her late mother-in-law’s iconic tiara, also known as the Cambridge Lover’s Knot, sitting atop her head.

December 21, when Prince Harry and Meghan Markle released their incredible engagement photos.

The couple said they were “so grateful” for all of the warm wishes they received. They also might be the most photogenic people on the planet.

December 25, when Kate and Meghan (alongside Will and Harry) made first public appearance together at Christmas with the Queen.

They look great together, don’t they? This is also the day we got Meghan’s first-ever public curtsy.

December 27, when Harry interviewed Obama for the BBC.

The bromance is strong with these two.
