Sarah Jessica Parker Thinks 'Sex and the City' Looks 'Tone Deaf' in 2018


Sarah Jessica Parker just acknowledged a truth about Sex and the City—something that more than a few think pieces and articles have addressed over the past couple of years. At the Deauville Film Festival in France on Friday, she said that the show would today seem “tone deaf” given the fact that the four women who comprise its leads are all white. “You couldn’t make it today because of the lack of diversity on screen,” Parker told The Hollywood Reporter. “I personally think it would feel bizarre.”

After all, we’ve seen a larger shift toward inclusion in television in 20 years. The small screen and all its streaming partners are bringing us stories that embrace greater representation for women of color—though there is still a long way to go.

Parker isn’t behind a reboot either, due in part to other changes that have shifted society in the two decades—and New York City—since 1998. 2018 is a vastly different world in terms of how people consider and give more nuanced attention to issues of sex and sexuality, dating, careers, feminism (and all its intersections) and family life. When all is said and done, she said, “I don’t know that you could do it with a different cast. I think that’s radical and interesting, but you can’t pretend it’s the same.”

“It wouldn’t be a reboot as I understand it,” she added. “If you came back and did six episodes, you’d have to acknowledge the city is not hospitable to those same ideas. You’d look like you were generationally removed from reality, but it would be certainly interesting to see four diverse women experiencing NYC their way. … It would be interesting and very worthwhile exploring, but it couldn’t be the same.”

The Bachelorette Becca Kufrin Thinks She Had an 'Amazing' Group of Guys, Despite Controversies


When ABC announced that Becca Kufrin would be the next Bachelorette, Bachelor Nation was ecstatic, to put it mildly. We all watched as Arie Luyendyk Jr. cruelly dumped her on national TV—a breakup so infamous even Saturday Night Live parodied it—so who more deserving? Fans were rooting for this Bachelorette to find the love of her life—and, according to Kufrin, she did: She’s been engaged to the winner of her final rose since taping ended in early May.

But after Kufrin’s season of The Bachelorette premiered, startling truths about some of her suitors came to light. Most notably, Lincoln Adim’s conviction of indecent assault and battery. And then there’s front-runner Garrett Yrigoyen, who admitted to liking several bigoted memes on Instagram.

For the most part, though, Kufrin hasn’t had much to say about these controversies. She’s remained silent on Adim’s conviction. When asked about Yrigoyen’s social media history, she told E! News that “everyone is entitled to their own opinions, and…I would hope people would stay open and respect me but also stay open and respect these 28 guys that went along on the journey with me.”

Of course, as the season comes to a close, Kufrin is aware that she’ll have to answer tough questions. Following the taping of Men Tell All (which airs Monday, July 30), she sat down with Glamour to talk about her experience with Adim and more. Read on.

It’s been two months since you announced you’re engaged. How has your relationship with your fiancé changed since then?

Becca Kufrin: It’s just grown exponentially. We’ve just learned so much more about each other, and it’s just grown so much. I’m even happier.

Throughout this season you kept saying what a great group of guys you had, but certain things have come to light that we didn’t know about. Do you still stand by that?

Becca: I still stand by what I said, and I still think those guys are amazing. And you know, yes, some relationships were a lot stronger. I learned a lot more about each guy and each relationship, but I respect all of them and wish them all the happiness in the world.

Lincoln wasn’t at the Men Tell All taping, nor was he mentioned. Now that we know his history, did you ever feel unsafe with him on the show?

Becca: No. I’m always surrounded by people. There’s a lot of bodies around, and I never felt unsafe. He always treated me with respect. So, yeah…

Once the fantasy suite dates come around, you get more time alone to talk about important topics with the remaining guys. Do you talk about politics and social issues, and where they stand?

Becca: Oh yeah, we talked about everything. I felt like whether it was on camera or off camera, I didn’t hold anything back. I don’t think the guys [held] anything back either. So any questions we had were brought up.

In Monday’s episode you said that you’re in love with two guys. How do you know you made the right choice?

Becca: You know, it’s something unexplainable. It’s just something I felt in my heart. All of the guys were amazing, but [I had to think about] what one would last a lifetime and what one would make me happy when I’m 30 or 45 or 70 or 90. It was just something that I felt, and I had to follow that.

Looking back, who would you have kept around longer? Who would you have eliminated sooner?

Becca: Oh man. I mean…Grocery Store Joe is amazing. I actually bumped into him in Chicago, and he’s great. Trent wasn’t at Men Tell All, but he was a guy who was so funny and always kept me laughing those first few weeks. That being said, I think I made the right choice week by week and did what was right for me.

The Internet Thinks Meghan Markle's Wedding Dress Was Inspired by J.Lo


ICYMI, on Saturday Meghan Markle married Prince Harry in a lavish royal wedding at Windsor Castle. And though the entire wedding was beautiful, there was a lot of conversation surrounding Markle’s stunning wedding dress—mostly about how streamlined, modern, and seamlessly chic it was. But if her custom-made Givenchy frock felt somehow familiar-looking to you, you’re not alone.

By Sunday, someone on the Twittersphere came to the humorous conclusion that Markle’s wedding dress seemed to have been inspired by Jennifer Lopez and her character’s wedding dress in The Wedding Planner. And thus, a meme was born.

As you may or may not recall from the 2001 romantic comedy, Lopez plays a wedding planner who toils away on other people’s dream days, without ever thinking about her own romantic life. But during a wedding scene in the film (that’s as close as we’ll get to a spoiler!), Lopez is spotted wearing a strikingly similar dress to Markle’s.

For the scene, Lopez also wore a bateau-neck, three-quarter-length-sleeved silk dress. Like Markle, her hair was similarly pulled back into a bun, which was adorned with a veil and delicate jewelry.

Of course, Markle’s real-life wedding dress came with a few more frills than the movie version. Not only did the now-Duchess of Sussex‘s gown come to life after months of hard work by designer Clare Waight Keller, the first female artistic director of Givenchy, but it also came complete with a 16-foot long bespoke veil and a looser skirt than the one Lopez wears. And Markle didn’t just fix her veil to her bun like Lopez; instead, she rocked a one-of-a-kind tiara borrowed from the Queen’s personal Crown Jewels.

“After meeting Ms. Waight Keller in early 2018, Ms. Markle chose to work with her for her timeless and elegant aesthetic, impeccable tailoring, and relaxed demeanor,” the Palace said in a statement about the dress and its creator. “Ms. Markle also wanted to highlight the success of a leading British talent who has now served as the creative head of three globally influential fashion houses—Pringle of Scotland, Chloé, and now Givenchy.”

It’s kind of fun to imagine Markle and Waight watching the movie together and dreaming up their royal wedding recreation—but us, this just offers further proof that Markle’s look is a truly timeless one.

DJ Khaled Thinks There Are "Different Rules" For Men And Women


Here’s a major key alert for DJ Khaled: Women like oral sex too. But, based on a clip from a 2015 interview that’s going viral this week, Khaled doesn’t seem to be aware of this—or, if he is, doesn’t care.

During a conversation with The Breakfast Club, Khaled goes into great detail describing the different rules he believes women and men should live by, especially when it comes to sex. “A woman should praise the man—the king,” he says. “If you holding it down for your woman, I feel like the woman should praise. And a man should praise the queen.”

He doesn’t stop there, though. “But you know, my way of praising is called, ha-ha, ‘How was dinner?’, ‘You like the house you living in? You like all them clothes you getting? I’m taking care of your family, I’m taking care of my family…’ You know, I’m putting in the work,” Khaled continues.

To clarify, the interviewer asks the rapper, “So, you’re saying you don’t go down?” Khaled replies, “Nahhh. Never!” Adding multiple times, “I don’t do that.”

Then, he makes it clear that it wouldn’t be OK with him if a woman refused to go down on him. “I put in that work, my work is great. It’s different rules for men. You gotta understand, we the king. There’s some things that y’all might not wanna do, but it got to get done. I just can’t do what you want me to do. I just can’t.”

Just to reiterate: Khaled is saying he won’t perform oral sex on a woman, but he thinks that a woman should—even if it’s something she’s not into either.

The clip, first resurfaced and shared by Twitter user @WhyDoYouSmell on Friday, May 4, had more than 8,000 retweets and 22,000 likes by the end of the work day. Of course, plenty of people had things to say about the interview on social media, with many women commenting that Khaled appears to equate sex with power over women.

“It’s sad that he equates sex to him achieving his role in a power dynamic, which likely [does] not include mutual pleasure,” one Twitter user commented.

“So he doesn’t believe in equal partnership. He believes in servitude and control under the guise of royalty,” another added.

Shortly after the clip began to make the rounds Khaled posted a photo of his wife to Instagram, writing, “My queen my best friend I love you!”

Khaled’s Instagram post is likely just been coincidental timing, but we’re hoping it means he’s learned his lesson since 2015.

Maisie Williams Thinks Hollywood Needs to Feature More Than 'One Type of Beautiful'


Maisie Williams‘s first professional role was Arya Stark on Game of Thrones, a job that’s earned her plenty of awards, a new best friend, and her fair share of fame. But even after starring as one of Winterfell’s finest for seven (soon to be eight!) seasons, Maisie feels that, thanks to Hollywood’s shallow views on beauty, there’s no guarantee she’ll be able to land another role as good as Arya.

In an interview with The Irish Times this week, the 20-year-old spoke about how she feels her looks might impact her future in acting. “It’s only now I’m starting to realize the characters that are available to me because of the way I look and the characters that aren’t available to me,” she said. “It’s a very shallow industry. And I don’t look like someone who is cast in roles that are, well, sexualized. Don’t get me wrong, I’m completely in awe of Hollywood’s leading ladies. I love looking at those totally jaw-droppingly beautiful women. But I think it’s sad that you only get to see one type of beautiful on screen.”

She’s right: Even after all the strides we’ve made in recent decades, the majority of women in movies and TV shows are still thin with classically beautiful features. Though Maisie may feel that she’s somewhat excluded from this stereotype, as a thin, white woman, she’ll likely have an easier time landing roles than will other non-white, non-sample-size actresses her age. Of course, it’s nonetheless important that Hollywood embrace diversity in all senses of the word.

Maisie also spoke about learning to embrace feminism as she spent her formative years in the spotlight. “I didn’t even know what the word ‘feminist’ meant until I became an actress. Within my family, I never felt that I had to conform to any kind of types. I had no idea about what was typically male or typically female. I didn’t even know about skin color,” she said. “I think it’s quite lovely that I was so clueless.” That said, she did admire powerful feminist icons—you know, like a certain claymation chicken. (Yes, really!) “Growing up, I loved Chicken Run, because it’s driven by Ginger, who is such a fantastic character,” said Maisie, whose next film role is in Early Man, from the people behind Chicken Run. “So to be a part of that same world, and to be playing another woman who is popular for her talents and not for her looks, and whose main story arc has nothing to do with the interest of boys, is very cool.”

Twitter Thinks Millie Bobby Brown Is Young Natalie Portman's Doppelgänger


Millie Bobby Brown is known for her unique look, from the preteen pixie cut she sported after shaving her head for her breakout role in Stranger Things to her designer fashion sense. But recently, as Mashable pointed out, Twitter has discovered Millie actually is fairly similar to another celebrity: a young Natalie Portman. Talk about strange things.

It’s hard to unsee the resemblance once you’ve checked out some of the side-by-sides of Millie and a Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace–era Natalie. But strangely enough, this isn’t the first time the former Queen Amidala has had a celebrity doppelgänger. While on set for the Star Wars prequels, Keira Knightley worked as her double.

The Millie-Natalie connection is so close, though, we’re busy figuring out exactly who Natalie would play in Stranger Things 3. (Eleven’s secret half-sister? A second aunt who’s more open to the idea that she can chat with her mother through lamps?). The resemblance between Millie and Natalie is downright uncanny. As one person succinctly put it, “I NEED ANSWERS.”
