The First Trailer for Taylor Swift’s Documentary, ‘Miss Americana,’ Is Finally Here


Taylor Swift‘s song lyrics have always been deeply personal, to the point that it can feel like we know her intimately. Of course, we don’t really—but come January 31, we will all be privy to other sides of the superstar when her documentary, Miss Americana, debuts on Netflix.

The first trailer for the doc dropped Wednesday, January 22. And if it’s any indication, we’re getting a behind-the-scenes version of Swift at a pivotal time in her life and career that’s unlike anything we’ve seen before. It opens with Swift preparing to go onstage where “no one that I know of in the audience actively hates me.” She then tells herself to “not get dead face.”

“Throughout my whole career, record executives would just say, ‘A nice girl doesn’t force their opinions on people. A nice girl smiles and waves and says thank you,'” she says in a voice-over. “I became the person everyone wanted me to be.”

She talks about stepping away from the spotlight for a year because she thought that’s what people wanted and having to “deconstruct an entire belief system.” But there are lighter moments in the movie too, like the light-up shoes she wears in the recording studio and silly footage from her tour.

We also see some glimpses of her family, in particular her mom, Andrea, who, Swift revealed on January 21, is battling a brain tumor. “While she was going through treatment, they found a brain tumor,” she told Variety. “And the symptoms of what a person goes through when they have a brain tumor is nothing like what we’ve ever been through with her cancer before. So it’s just been a really hard time for us as a family.”

Miss Americana starts streaming on Netflix on January 31. Mark your calendars accordingly.

Taylor Swift Shares That Her Mother, Andrea, Has a Brain Tumor


Taylor Swift hasn’t stopped since releasing her seventh album, Lover last August. Since then, she’s been busy with a limited tour, press for the head-scratcher Cats (she has no regrets), plans to re-record her previous material, and preparing the premiere of Taylor Swift: Miss Americana, a Netflix documentary about her career and her place in pop culture that comes out on January 31. But between it all, Swift has been dealing with some pretty devastating family news: She revealed this week that her mother Andrea, who’s been battling cancer since 2015, has a brain tumor, which doctors discovered through her treatment.

Swift opened up about her mom’s health in a long profile that Variety ran this week. Their relationship has been a close-knit one, and Swift has already written two songs—”Soon You’ll Get Better” and “The Best Day”—about her battle with cancer. “Almost every decision I make, I talk to her about it first. So obviously it was a really big deal to ever speak about her illness,” Swift said during the interview before talking about the tough moment in which the tumor was discovered. “While she was going through treatment, they found a brain tumor. And the symptoms of what a person goes through when they have a brain tumor is nothing like what we’ve ever been through with her cancer before. So it’s just been a really hard time for us as a family.”

Swift explained that her mother is part of the reason why she’s planning to only play four stadium dates in America this summer and several festivals in Europe. “I feel like I haven’t done festivals, really, since early in my career—they’re fun and bring people together in a really cool way. But I also wanted to be able to work as much as I can handle right now, with everything that’s going on at home. And I wanted to figure out a way that I could do both those things,” she said.

She went further into what Andrea is going through and added, “I mean, we don’t know what is going to happen. We don’t know what treatment we’re going to choose. It just was the decision to make at the time, for right now, for what’s going on.”

Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn Had a Rare Public Night Out Together at the Golden Globes 2020


Taylor Swift and boyfriend Joe Alwyn are notoriously private about their relationship. They rarely ever speak about each other in interviews—and while Swift’s music (especially the songs on her latest album, Lover) always offers up lots of apparent nuggets to interpret about her love life, the couple hardly ever appears together at public events.

They broke tradition for last night’s Golden Globes, where, after walking the red carpet separately, they met up inside and sat together for the actual awards show. She chose a floral gown by Etro for the event, where she was nominated for Best Original Song for “Beautiful Ghosts” from Cats. Though he wasn’t nominated, Alwyn (who starred in this year’s Harriet) looked quite dapper in a classic black tuxedo.

Once the red carpet was done, the couple meet back up inside. “Taylor Swift came into the #GoldenGlobes through a back door with Joe Alwyn. Then she and a handful of security guards, as well as a man carrying her dress train, split off separately and went to the bar. They immediately exited through another side door,” L.A. Times reporter Amy Kaufman tweeted.

As is her usual awards show M.O., Swift offered up some great reaction shots in audience—and added Alwyn to the mix. Fans were thrilled, tweeting out all the best moments from the couple. One even thought they spotted the exact moment Swift got inspired for some new music: “How much u wanna bet taylor wrote a song about joe in that second?”

“The media will be saying in 2060 ‘young taylor swift and joe alwyn attending the 77th golden globe awards,'” another fan tweeted, speculating about the future of their relationship.

After the show, Swift changed into a black sparkling dress and the couple hit up the CAA after party. Here’s hoping we get to see more of these two together in 2020.

Emma Watson Weighed in on That Taylor Swift-Scooter Braun Controversy


Emma Watson is the latest celebrity to comment on Taylor Swift‘s legal situation with Big Machine’s Scooter Braun.

During an interview with Variety at the New York premiere of Little Women, the actor said the pop star’s current ownership battle over her music very much reminds her of Saoirse Ronan’s character Jo March, who also struggles to own the copyrights to her debut novel.

“It’s about believing in yourself and knowing your worth and owning your worth,” Watson said on the red carpet.

“Right now, the Taylor Swift situation is a great example of, you know, you’re young and you’re talented and someone wants to buy your work, but having ownership at the end of the day is super, super important because you don’t know what someone’s going to decide to do with that,” she explained.

The Harry Potter star also compared the situation to the Monopoly board game.

“I think people undervalue ownership,” she added. “You know when you play Monopoly and you have a decision and you want to own something or get cash fast. The way to win Monopoly, everyone, is to own stuff. I’m just saying.”

Watson isn’t the only Little Woman star to weigh in on Swift’s controversy; Ronan also made comparisons between her character and the “Lover” hitmaker while promoting the film last week.

“Taylor Swift just released an album [and it’s the first album she’s ever owned,” she said on This Morning. “We really wanted to use this opportunity to honour this and fight for her work.”

As for Swift, she first spoke out against Braun and Scott Borchetta in June after the talent manager purchased her masters allegedly without her consent.

The 30-year-old singer also took aim at Braun while accepting Billboard‘s Woman of the Decade Award. During her powerful speech, Swift noted that music is too often “bought up like real estate,” adding that it had “happened to me without my approval, consultation or consent.”

“The fact is that private equity enabled [Braun] to think, according to his own social media post, that he could ‘buy me.’ I’m obviously not going willingly,” she said. “Yet the most amazing thing was to discover that it would be the women in our industry who would have my back and show me the most vocal support at one of the most difficult times and I will never, ever forget it. Like, ever.”

Taylor Swift Was the Top-Earning Female Entertainer of the Decade


Taylor Swift had a better decade than (almost) everyone. According to Forbes, the 30-year-old was the highest-earning female entertainer of the decade, bringing in an estimated $825 million over the last 10 years.

Overall, Swift was the second highest-earning entertainer, coming in just behind Dr. Dre, who raked in an estimated $950 million due to his stake in the headphone company, Beats, which Apple purchased in 2014 for $3 billion. (It only takes into account living celebrities; As Forbes noted, had it added in Michael Jackson, he’d easily rank as first considering his estate pulled in an estimated $2.37 billion over the last decade.)

According to the outlet, Swift earned the second-place spot because just about everyone loves her music. Her millions reportedly came from her multiplatinum albums, her brand partnerships, and several sold-out tours. But the singer’s accomplishments went far beyond making money. In December, Swift was also honored with Billboard‘s first-ever Woman of the Decade Award. She was chosen due to her massive influence on music and pop culture, which we here at Glamour recognized as well.

“Taylor isn’t the first country artist to dabble in pop—both Shania Twain and Faith Hill have done it, to varying degrees—but she is the first to do it in its totality. And, along the way, she broke new ground,” Glamour writer Christopher Rosa penned. “When she dropped ‘We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together’ and ‘I Knew You Were Trouble’ in 2012, for example, top 40 radio short-circuited. Both songs were stunning, seamless marriages of genres: country, pop, rock, even elements of dubstep. It was a precursor, if not the jumpstart, to the genre-bending hits that would define the latter half of the decade.”

Beyond music, in the last decade, Swift also became a crusader for the rights of artists. In December of 2019, Swift publicly called out mega-manager, Scooter Braun, who acquired her back catalog of music as part of his purchase of Scott Borchetta’s Big Machine Label Group. Swift, who was once under the Big Machine label, said she “pleaded” to purchase her music back from Borchetta, however, Borchetta only said she could “earn” back one album for each new one she produced.

Taylor Swift Is the Artist of the Decade—Whether You Like It or Not


Her follow-up, 1989, was even more unprecedented. It was, in effect, a 100 percent, pure-pop album with virtually zero elements of the country twang that made her a star. The album after that, Reputation, ventured even further into electro-pop, with distorted vocals and grimy, club-ready beats. The fact that this was the same artist who delivered the bluegrass anthem “Mean” in 2010 is astounding.

Lover, Swift’s most recent, is an amalgamation of her discography. In many ways, it’s a return to form, with several stripped-down tunes and a few glossy pop gems mixed in. The record is further proof Swift is the decade’s biggest sonic shape-shifter—listening to her instincts, not the radio, and creating incredibly compelling pop music as a result.

Perhaps the only artist who rivals her on this metric is Rihanna, whose 2010s catalog defies genre, as well. But her songs, in my opinion, were often reactions to the top 40 landscape. When radio went dance-pop, so did she. When it pivoted to tropical house, she followed suit. Swift, however, almost made her music in a vacuum—that’s what I think, at least.
