'This Is Us' Star Mandy Moore Reveals What's Next for Kate and Rebecca and the Big Three as Toddlers

The second season of This Is Us could easily be renamed This Is Us: Kevin or This Is Us: Kate, and so on. Each episode, one character gets their moment to shine—and on Tuesday’s, it was Rebecca’s turn. For Mandy Moore, it was a turning point in Rebecca’s journey: “I feel like she’s able to have that more fully flushed-out role, where she gets to step up to the plate and have some of the winning moves that usually [is reserved] for Jack. I’m really glad that she’s able to have those moments, too.”

To continue the baseball analogies, by the time the credits rolled on Tuesday’s episode, Moore had pitched a perfect game. With the help of her cast members, she delivered every gesture and action beautifully, culminating with that heartbreaking split scene in the hospital with babies Randall and Tess.

Aside from finding out how she did it so effortlessly over different decades, we had plenty of other questions, too. When will we see Miguel and Rebecca reconnect in real life, instead of just on Facebook? Will Kate name her baby after Jack since Randall didn’t? And should we get ready to know a whole other set of Pearson kids when toddler Kate, Kevin, and Randall make their debut next week? Here, Moore answers all of that and more.

On the most recent episode, we discovered that Rebecca and Miguel reconnected after eight years thanks to Facebook. Up until that point, did you know any details about how they came to be a couple?

Mandy Moore: No, I didn’t have any idea about this revelation. This was news to me when I first read the script, as was Jack’s brother being revealed. I had heard rumors of it, and it had been hinted around, but sometimes we don’t know specific details until we get the full script. I had my own running theory of what unfolded because I kind of needed those answers as an actor—so did Jon Huertas, who plays Miguel—but it did differ a little bit, obviously, from this. It’s new information for us, too.

Have you started filming any scenes where we pick up from these Facebook messages?

Mandy: No, and I don’t think that’s going to be addressed until next season. That’s what I’ve been told.

In the episode, Rebecca was wearing a wedding ring the entire time, which I assumed was from her marriage to Miguel. Obviously, we know now it isn’t. Do you think she’s been wearing her wedding ring from Jack since he died eight plus years ago, or—and hear me out—could she have gotten married to someone else during this time and been in a very lonely marriage?

Mandy: [Laughs] That’s a great theory, but no, that’s not the case at all. Rebecca really is in a terribly lonely spot, but I think she never took off her ring. I think she still considers herself a Pearson, even after she married Miguel. I mean, I’ve always sort of operated—not that it’s known or talked about, maybe it will be somewhere down the line—that she still has the last name Pearson. I don’t think she took Miguel’s name. It’s important for her to feel connected to [Jack]—that’s why she still wears the necklace—so it’s not weird she still wears her wedding ring. That’s how she feels connected to him.

Do you have any intel on what happened to Miguel’s ex-wife, Shelly? She and Rebecca were friends even after her divorce to Miguel, but we don’t even know if she’s alive in the present day.

Mandy: That’s very true! I don’t want to speculate, because I’m sure that will be addressed and talked about. Dan has told us that season three will focus a lot more on Miguel and Rebecca’s courtship, so I’m absolutely positive that Shelly will factor in. They are friends, and they are somewhat close friends. I don’t think they’re best friends, but I’m curious what happened there. At one point the couples were friends, so that’s a mystery to me.

It’s an interesting dynamic with women, too, because it’s happened before where a former spouse ends up with a friend’s former spouse after one dies.

Mandy: Oh yeah, it feels a little too convenient, though, for Shelly to have passed away. It’s probably a tricky dynamic, considering they are divorced and Rebecca and Miguel find their way together down the road.

PHOTO: Ron Batzdorff/NBC

Let’s talk about Tess’ birth, when Randall tells Rebecca he had Jack and Jasmine picked out as possible names. What’s interesting is that he and Beth chose not to name their second child, Annie, after Jack either. That makes me think that Kate will name her baby after him, which might help Rebecca and Kate connect again.

Mandy: Interesting! I like your way of thinking! [Laughs] I do! You’ll just have to continue watching this season to see how it all unfolds, but I think that’s a great way to honor her father. I definitely support that.

When will Rebecca find out Kate is pregnant?

Mandy: It’s going to be explored in the next couple of episodes. Not next week, but it will be explored in episodes 8, 9, and 10. [You’ll see] Kate telling her family and everybody’s reactions. I love that this season is starting to really connect the dots between Rebecca and Kate, and where this disruption and disconnection in their relationship stems from. But, also, I love that a pregnancy, in theory, is able to bring mother and daughter together. I hope that that’s the case for them. I want to see them put their differences aside and celebrate this really beautiful moment in her life.

Speaking of which, what was your thoughts when Kate lashed out at Rebecca following her first gig?

Mandy: The scene was super emotional for me when I read it initially. It just tapped into similar dynamics I have with my own mother, and it really speaks to how complicated it can get between mothers and daughters. No one’s right, and no one’s wrong. It just is. It’s hard to pinpoint what anybody did wrong, but yet they’re totally justified for feeling the way that they do. I don’t fault Kate for being upset with her mom, and I don’t fault Rebecca for what she did with Kate. Rebecca maybe tries a little too hard, but [for Kate] to jump down her mother’s throat…it’s like, again, it’s such a tricky, gray area where you’re damned if you do, damned if you don’t.

Before we move on to next week’s episode, let’s talk about the two hospital scenes where Rebecca met baby Randall and baby Tess for the first time. Are you able to watch your scenes when they air? Because that was one of the most beautiful scenes I’ve ever seen on television.

Mandy: Aww, thank you. I did watch the episode with my man fiancé Taylor Goldsmith because he’s a fan of the show. You’re always so excited to see everybody else’s work, but I find it hard to watch myself. I loved this episode. I love [director] Regina King, and I can’t wait to work with her again, hopefully. I loved the different time period because it’s something new and fresh that we haven’t seen before, and I love Halloween. It’s one of my favorite holidays, and it was so much fun for Milo and I to dress up as Sonny and Cher. All of it was fun to watch unfold.

That last monologue [in the hospital scene] was so tricky because we shot it in pieces. We shot the distant past first, with Rebecca putting her trepidation and fears aside and going to Randall and saying, “We’re going to bring you home, and I’m terrified because I don’t know how to do this.” Then, a week later, we shot the scene in 2008 with me talking to baby Tess for the first time. I delivered those monologues to baby dolls, which makes them even more tricky. There was one shot with baby Randall, I think, where it was a real baby. But with babies, you can only shoot with them for like 20 minutes total. The baby Tess monologue was all delivered to one of those animatronic, little robotic babies that moves and vibrates. It’s really weird. But, yes, I’m really moved by people’s reactions. Don Roos wrote such a remarkable script; as an actor, to get a piece of dialogue like that is what you dream about. To be able to do this sort of weird, like, multi-monologue in two different time periods, intercut with each other, is such a dream. It was a challenge, and I was really excited about it.

PHOTO: Ron Batzdorff/NBC

Next week we see the big three in their toddler years. Should we get used to seeing a whole new set of kids that will be part of the show going forward?

Mandy: I don’t think that these children in particular…though they are a big part of this coming episode. As you can imagine, it’s really hard with kids. They are one and two years old, and everybody has a different energy that they bring. Some kids love being on a set and around all these new people; some don’t, and that’s totally understandable. I’m sure anytime we have toddlers moving forward, they may be different children episode by episode, so I don’t know if I would get too attached to seeing one face or another. But, yes, we’ll be meeting the kids at toddler age next episode. It’s so much fun, it really is. And the next episode is so beautiful, so moving. It’s a different time period that’s really critical—like a year in to the fostering process of baby Randall, of trying to officially adopt him, and some of the road blocks we faced that are really unexpected. It’s a really beautiful episode with some great guest actors. I think people are really going to love it.

'Stranger Things' Star Finn Wolfhard Might Be My Style Twin

Sometime in the fall of 2012 (right around when his relationship with Taylor Swift was A Thing), Harry Styles became my main source of style inspiration. This was a surprising-but-welcome development: I had never consciously co-opted a male star’s look before and wasn’t even a big One Direction fan, and yet I had a mental catalog of his outfits that I’d reference whenever I went shopping.

On more than one occasion, I found myself gravitating toward his sartorial faithfuls: loose T-shirts, skinny jeans, retro sneakers, ankle boots, a slouchy posture…you get it:

PHOTO: Danny E. Martindale

Of course, I didn’t dress like this every day. But when I did, I felt more sure of myself. It was as if his vibe was a mirror of my most authentic self.

Harry wasn’t my first style icon—in the past, I looked to women and female characters I admired for inspiration. Dressing like them was my attempt at emulating the qualities about them I liked. But these phases tended to be short-lived and almost always forced, as if I was play-acting as a character. In my Zooey Deschanel years, for example, I’d buy cutesy prints and vintage dresses but never know how to put everything together. I’d breathe a sigh of relief as soon as I got home and changed into my favorite oversized sweatshirt from college.

Once I found Harry, though, everything clicked. I was feeling more confident because I liked how my butt looked in skinny jeans; I was comfortable in the T-shirts and collar shirts; and I knew cool shoes would tie the whole look together. Plus, it was so stress-free to wake up and know exactly what to wear that day—a feeling I had rarely experienced before.

In One Direction-era Harry, I thought I had found my OTSP (that is, one true style pairing). But then, he went and changed up his look to this:

New Harry has been doing a printed, almost-exclusively-Gucci suiting thing that totally works if you’re a former boy bander looking to launch a career as a solo rock star. But that’s just not me, literally or figuratively.

I realized couldn’t go down this path with Harry, so I needed to find a new style icon. Enter Finn Wolfhard, the 14-year-old star of Netflix’s Stranger Things and summer blockbuster It. (Stay with me here.)

Though I was an early adapter to Stranger Things, I didn’t really pay attention to Finn’s style until mid-way through watching It, when my husband leaned over and whispered, “You dress like Richie.” He was referencing this outfit, specifically:

“Oh my God, you’re right,” I whispered as I flashbacked to earlier that summer, when I tried on a loud, ’90s button-down shirt at a vintage shop in London and asked my husband what he thought. “It’s…a look,” he said, generously, after a long pause. I bought it anyway:

Now, Finn’s look isn’t as clearly curated as Harry’s—it’s much harder to pin down what it even is—but that’s what I like about it. He may be in his early teens, but he’s already given us (OK, me) three distinct styles to emulate: the outfits of Mike Wheeler, Richie Tozier, and Finn IRL. They’re all equally inspirational and exhibit a few common threads—think lots of tees, striped shirts, button downs, and cool sneakers. Plus, that omnipresent slouchy posture I love so much.

With this revelation in mind, I went back and revisited some of Mike Wheeler’s outfits and discovered I already owned several similar sweaters and jackets as the character, like this one:

And once I started down this rabbit hole, I began noticing what Finn himself was wearing off-camera, on the red carpet and in press interviews. Like myself, he seems to have a fondness for striped T-shirts and flats:

I even went and bought a new turtleneck after he wore this on the carpet:

There’s even more inspiration to be found on his Instagram.

And as I watched the second season of Stranger Things, I fell in love with this sweater that’s now at the top of my shopping list:

I’ve tried to look inward and unpack why I, a grown and married woman, keep dressing like teen boys. I have a few theories. For one, maybe I’m just drawn to Finn’s style because we share the same birthday. (December 23, what up!)

Or perhaps this is simply a nostalgic return to my younger self. The world is currently chaos, so my subconscious could be directing me toward things that are known and comfortable. After all, my wardrobe in grade school consisted of Umbro shorts, Adidas slides, and a variety of free T-shirts I got from being on the swim team. Those were the blissful years before I was very, very aware of the male gaze—so is that it? Now that I’m in a committed relationship and thus subconsciously free of the desire to dress for men, am I reverting to my pre-pubescent sartorial self? In recent years, I’ve embraced my womanhood by dressing in more unisex silhouettes; whereas before, I would wander aimlessly around Anthropologie picking up whatever floral print was on sale. Now, I shop at places that specialize in basics (sweaters from Uniqlo, jeans from Levi’s, sneakers from Nike and Vans)…which is how I’ve amassed a uniform eerily similar to Finn Wolfhard and his characters.

Will I move on to a new style icon someday? Yeah, probably. Until then, though, I’m fully embracing this phase. It’ll probably get worse before it gets better—after all, I did just add a sweet new Mike-approved Casio calculator watch to my wardrobe. As Eleven would say, it’s “bitchin’.”

'Riverdale' Star Camila Mendes Opens Up About Struggling With an Eating Disorder

PHOTO: Robby Klein/Getty Images

Riverdale star Camila Mendes plays the mysterious, confident Veronica Lodge onscreen, but she isn’t afraid to let her guard down in real life—even when it comes to talking about the tough, personal stuff. On Friday, Mendes revealed that she has struggled with symptoms of an eating disorder in the past, and that her sister suffered with an eating disorder for years as they grew up. In a powerful Instagram post, she explained that she’s partnering with Project HEAL to help raise money for others seeking to help with their own eating disorders.

Project HEAL was founded in 2008 by Liana Rosenman and Kristina Saffran, who met each other during treatment for anorexia. They came together to start the nonprofit to help others who were suffering but couldn’t afford treatment—sadly, many insurance plans don’t provide adequate coverage for eating disorders. (Rosenman and Saffran, by the way, were 2011 honorees in Glamour’s young women of the year list).

“I can say from experience that eating disorders are serious mental illnesses,” Mendes wrote in her post. “Growing up, I watched my big sister suffer from one for many years, and I’ve experienced periods in my life when I’ve suffered symptoms as well. I’m joining Project HEAL to help break the stigma associated with eating disorders.”

Mendes will attend the [Project HEAL San Francisco Gala] on Saturday night to auction off a day on the Riverdale set. The money will go to those in need of treatment.

There’s been a recent cultural shift when it comes to talking about eating disorders, especially in pop culture, with high-profile projects and celebrities helping to shape an honest and empowering cultural concersation. This year’s To the Bone starred Lily Collins as a young woman struggling with anorexia. The film also led Collins to open up about her real life struggles with the illness.

Demi Lovato also got candid about disordered eating in her documentary, Simply Complicated. And Pretty Little Liars star Troian Bellisario wrote, directed, and starred in her film Feed, which tells her own story about her experience with anorexia.

These hard-hitting, personal depictions of what it’s actually like to deal with an eating disorder are helping to shine light on a formerly taboo subject—and it’s wonderful that these celebrity women are using their platforms to lead the way in continuing to break down the stigma surrounding them.

How Do I Talk Dirty Without Sounding Like a Porn Star?

PHOTO: Rachel Bellinsky/Stocksy

Hi Emily!

I have an extremely healthy (and safe) sex life with my boyfriend—but here’s my issue. I have no idea how to talk dirty. Normally I’d say how great he feels inside of me, tell him to put his hands here or there, but I get stuck after this. I don’t want to sound like a porn star, but I do want him to be turned on from what I say.

What can I say besides this to turn him on that isn’t too intense?

Marci, 27

Marci,

The good news is you already seem to be over that awkward slump of initiating some dirty conversation, and that’s half the battle! While there’s nothing wrong with what you’re saying now, I get that you want to expand your dirty talk repertoire without coming off as some wanna-be porn star.

Here are some tips for finding the perfect balance between sexy and distasteful when it comes to your dirty talk:

Do relax: Your partner already enjoys having sex with you so, take comfort in that realization, and it’ll be easier to let go of your inhibitions. Don’t worry too much about how you sound or what you say at the beginning— the fact that you’re trying is already turning him on.

Don’t force it: To sound more natural, focus on something that’s happening in the moment. Instead of saying “this feels good,” expand on that– the more details the better.

Don’t focus on what you think he wants to hear: Develop your own script, and don’t feel like you have to sound super freaky for it to work.

Do practice before you start: Texting or talking to your guy ahead of time is a perfect way to set yourself up for some great dirty talk—and it doesn’t have to be dramatic to have the right effect. You can even even practice on your commute home from work or in front of the mirror. Practice what you want to say and how you’re going to say it. (The lower and breathier your voice is, the better!)

Don’t be afraid to ask questions: Asking things like, “What do you want me to do?” or “What would turn you on right now?” can be great for turning your dirty talk monologue into a dialogue. This way, all the sexiness doesn’t have to fall on you!

With these tips, you’ll be a dirty talk dynamo before you know it!

'Game of Thrones' Star Gwendoline Christie Admits Tormund's Love for Brienne Continues Off Screen, Too

In a recent interview with Seth Meyers on Late Night, actress Gwendoline Christie, who plays Brienne on Game of Thrones, spilled some rather uncomfortable details about those looks she gets from Tormund. You know, the looks.

Apparently, actor Kristofer Hivju stays in full Tormund character, even after the director says cut—and yes, that includes his creepy stares. “He likes to continue being in character even off set,” Christie shared with Seth. “He will start chewing a sandwich wildly at me, start masticating wildly at me, really kind of making love to that sandwich as he eyeballs me. So it’s strong. Eyes like lasers pouring right in.” Like this, we assume:

Christie explains that she is a classically trained actress, so she rarely starts laughing during a scene, but this is the one time where she completely loses it. As she tells Seth, Tormund’s looks are “possibly the one time that I dissolve without fail.” She continued, “No one told me that this was gonna happen. In the script it simply said, ‘Tormund gives Brienne a look.’ I was not expecting the power, the magnitude, of intense sexual intention to pour out of a man’s eyes and cover me.”

Tormund’s looks may have met their end in this season’s Game of Thrones finale, so we’re eagerly awaiting to see what happens next season. (To be completely honest, though, we’re not really sure if we should be rooting for more looks or for no looks at all.)

Until then, watch Gwendoline Christie’s full interview below:
