Sophie Turner Says She Felt Pressure to Lose Weight While Filming ‘Game of Thrones’


In a new interview with Marie Claire Australia, Sophie Turner opens up about how therapy helped her navigate some tough moments while filming Game of Thrones.

“I have experienced mental illness firsthand, and I’ve seen what it can do to the people around [the sufferers] as well,” the actor who plays Sansa on GoT tells Marie Claire. “[In my teen years] my metabolism suddenly decided to fall to the depths of the ocean and I started to get spotty and gain weight, and all of this was happening to me on camera.”

Unfortunately, people weren’t so kind to Turner as she was growing up in the public eye. In a podcast from two weeks ago, she talked about the comments she would receive from fans about her appearance. “People used to say, ‘Damn, Sansa gained 10 pounds,’ or ‘Damn, Sansa needs to lose 10 pounds,’ or ‘Sansa got fat,’” Turner revealed. “It was just a lot of weight comments, or I would have spotty skin because I was a teenager and that’s normal, and I used to get a lot of comments about my skin and my weight and how I wasn’t a good actress.”

Turner says therapy helped her deal with this pressure. “Everyone needs a therapist, especially when people are constantly telling you you’re not good enough and you don’t look good enough,” she also told the magazine. “I think it’s necessary to have someone to talk to, and to help you through that.”

Sophie Turner has often been transparent about her mental health journey. Just last month she told Dr. Phil on his podcast that she experienced depression in her late teen years—in part, she thinks, because she was living at home filming GoT while her friends were at college. She frequently turned to her onscreen sister, Maisie Williams, for support but admitted at one point their friendship had a “destructive side” because they spent time only together.

“Maisie and I used to [stay inside] together,” she told Dr. Phil. “I think being friends with each other was quite destructive because we were going through the same thing. We used to get home from set, go to a Tesco across the road, a little supermarket, and just buy food. We’d go back to our room and eat it in bed. We never socialized for a couple of years. We didn’t socialize with anyone but ourselves.”

In the world of celebrity friendships, there’s one duo who rises above the rest: Sophie Turner and Maisie Williams. The actresses met on the set of Game of Thrones, where they play sisters Sansa and Arya, and they’re basically sisters off-screen too. You hear all the time about co-stars becoming chummy with one another, but what Turner and Williams have is more than that: It’s a real, deep-rooted friendship—the kind of bond Jennifer Aniston and Courteney Cox forged while working together on Friends.

The Internet can’t get enough of Williams and Turner’s obsession with each other, and I understand. It’s one of the only pure things we have left in this world. I mean, Game of Thrones is about to end. What else do we have to live for besides Turner and Williams tweeting cute things back and forth? This it it. It’s all we get.

So let’s relish in it, shall we? Here are Maisie Williams and Sophie Turner’s greatest friendship moments. We’re sure there will be plenty more to come.

When Turner revealed her and Williams’ self-care routine on the GoT set. “The past few seasons Maisie and I have sleepovers every night when we’re shooting,” Turner said at New York Comic-Con last year. “Or every night whenever both of us are in town. We just used to sit there and eat and watch stupid videos and smoke weed. I don’t know if my publicist will kill me for saying this. We’d get high and then we’d sit in the bath together and we’d rub makeup brushes on our faces. It’s fun.”

The time a photo agency accidentally called Williams “Maisie Turner.” She and Sophie made jokes about marrying each other, of course.

When Turner called Williams her “soulmate” on Instagram. No lies detected.

The fact Williams is going to be a bridesmaid in Turner’s wedding to Joe Jonas. “I already got it,” Williams told the Radio Times in January 2018, referring to the bridesmaid gig. “[The wedding] is very, very exciting. It’s kind of bizarre, though.” I cannot wait to see the Instagrams for that bachelorette party.

On that note: Williams’ super-sweet message to Turner about her engagement. “Congratulations to my beautiful girlfriend on her engagement ? This is just one of MANY life milestones we’ll share. Love you both,” she posted in October 2017.

When Williams put out a request in January 2017 for old photos of herself and Turner. This is literally me laughing at photos from high school with my best friend.

All the cute names they call each other on Instagram. “Bae,” “soulmate,” “sister”—they’ve used all these words to describe each other. I’m not crying, you’re crying.

Their couple nickname. “Mophie.” They’ve hashtagged it several times.

When they wore matching costumes on Halloween 2016. They went as weed-happy girl scouts, a.k.a “hash brownies.” All other couples costumes are canceled.

And they low-key matched for Kit Harington’s wedding. I really hope this was coordinated.

Sophie Turner Says Her Friendship With Maisie Williams Once Had a "Destructive" Side


Sophie Turner and Maisie Williams have become super close playing the Stark sisters on Game of Thrones over the last eight years. So much so that Williams once joked that the whole series was just an elaborate way to bring the two together.

They’re so tight, though, that Turner just revealed on Dr. Phil’s Phil in the Blanks podcast that their friendship had a “quite destructive” side because they didn’t really talk to anyone else on set besides each other.

The comment was part of a larger conversation Turner had with Dr. Phil about how important mental health has become to her. In her late teens, she said she began to experience depression—a result, she thinks, of the fact that she was working on the show and living at home while her friends were off at college. Williams was someone she frequently relied on because they understood each other.

“I have a friend, Maisie, who was on the show with me, she’s just a year younger than me and she and I were growing up together,” Turner told Dr. Phil. “She was my best friend, and she was the only one I really told about all of it.”

However, that the two often shut other people out as their bond grew stronger.

“Maisie and I used to [stay inside] together. I think being friends with each other was quite destructive because we were going through the same thing,” Turner said, adding, “We used to get home from set, go to a Tesco across the road, a little supermarket, and just buy food. Now they seem to have found other ways to spend their time together. In another interview, Turner shared that she and Williams had a very specific way of decompressing from the stress of the hit HBO series. “We just used to sit there and eat and watch stupid videos and smoke weed,” she said during a talk at New York Comic Con. “I don’t know if my publicist will kill me for saying this. We’d get high and then we’d sit in the bath together and we’d rub makeup brushes on our faces. It’s fun.”

All of those experiences seem to have bonded the two actresses for life. Turner has called her connection to Williams “the purest form of true, true friendship,” and it’s not likely that their Stark sisterhood will fade, even after the show comes to its highly anticipated end this year.

As for her own mental health, Turner told Dr. Phil she has prioritized and scheduled time to take time for herself. “I actually am still on my break,” she said. “I took a break off of work to focus on my mental health because I thought it was important.”

Sophie Turner Might Have Just Dropped a Major Clue About Sansa Stark's Fate on 'Game of Thrones'


Tomorrow (Sunday, April 14), the eighth and final season of the global phenomenon that is Game of Thrones will begin airing—and we’ll finally start to get some answers about how the heck this thing is actually going to end. In the meantime, even the more casual fans like myself have taken to analyzing the frames of whatever footage HBO sees fit to release, not to mention deep-diving the promotional interviews the cast has given for hints. Hey, you have to look for clues where you can with this show—after all, its cast and creators are famously tight-lipped about revealing spoilers.

Take Sophie Turner‘s recent interview with Entertainment Weekly: Is she perhaps leaving us clues to Sansa Stark’s fate? When asked about her character’s storyline for the upcoming season, Turner had this to say: “Sansa this season is very much enjoying becoming a leader in her own right and the leader of Winterfell, and this year there are certain challenges of people who come into her life that threaten that. She has to go behind a few backs and risks tearing apart her family.”

It already seemed pretty clear that Daenerys (and her dragons) would present at least one of those challenges. Co-star Emilia Clarke, who plays the powerful character, has also hinted at tension between the two characters.

Turner also almost seems to confirm a popular fan theory about Sansa and Jon Snow: “Her [Sansa’s] relationship with Jon [Snow] is struggling because he’s so clearly in love with Daenerys and believes in her completely. Sansa thinks she’s power-hungry and not the rightful queen. There’s a huge amount of fighting between Sansa and Jon.”

Plus, Sansa doesn’t exactly love the idea of having dragons around. “She’s not happy because she’s going to have to feed these dragons,” Turner says. “They require a lot of food, and they have limited resources.”

This all sounds pretty ominous—especially because we know that no character, big or small, is ever safe on Game of Thrones. It’s Turner’s quote about going behind a few backs that sounds like a clue that she might either go all the way to the Iron Throne or die because she betrays someone close to her. And as Cersei Lannister famously says in season one, “When you play the game of thrones, you win or you die. There is no middle ground.”

Maisie Williams Has a Pretty Hilarious Theory About Game of Thrones and Sophie Turner


Game of Thrones may be coming to an end this year, but the off-screen friendship of Sophie Turner and Maisie Williams will definitely live on. From having matching moments on the red carpet to talking all night long at sleepovers, the Stark sisters have certainly kept their sibling bond going even when the cameras stopped rolling.

In fact, Maisie has a pretty funny theory that the entire eight-season run of the hit HBO series was just a conspiracy for her and Sophie to become BFFs. “It was like one big elaborate thing to find me a best friend. This whole show!” the actor joked with E! News at the premiere for Game of Thrones’s final season.

She’s totally kidding of course, but her friendship with Sophie is definitely the real deal. “It’s been incredible,” Maisie added, telling E! that it’s been so important to have a friend like Sophie during her Game of Thrones journey.

But it hasn’t always been easy; especially when they had to film more ~serious~ scenes together. “You know like when someone’s got little tears because they’re gonna laugh? That’s kind of how I felt the whole time,” Maisie revealed, adding that she was “corpsing” a lot while sharing the screen with Sophie.

While it will definitely be sad to say goodbye to the Stark sisters when Game of Thrones airs its final episode, we have full confidence that the #Mophie legend will keep going. After all, with matching friendship tattoos, an upcoming wedding, and an arsenal of sweet memories between them, we wouldn’t expect anything less.

Sophie Turner Addresses Kit Harington Making More Money Than Her for 'Game of Thrones'


Sophie Turner and Kit Harington have been co-stars for, it’s safe to say, a while now: Game of Thrones‘ eighth and final season is premiering on April 14, and although we have so many questions about what’s to come on the hit show, there’s a 0% chance we’re going to be getting any satisfactory answers until each episode unfolds. (However, you can bet that this hasn’t stopped fans from coming up with plenty of theories about what’s going to happen.) There’s one thing that can be cleared up, though, and that’s the matter of why Turner, who plays Sansa Stark, and Harington, who plays Jon Snow, aren’t getting paid the same for the work they do on the show.

In an industry where there are headline-making gender pay gaps—remember when Michelle Williams reportedly got paid less than $1,000 while Mark Wahlberg got $1.5 million for a movie reshoot?—discrepancies like this are beginning to receive extra scrutiny. Turner was recently asked by
Harper’s Bazaar UK about her views on the difference between her and Harington’s paychecks for the show. Asking for equal pay on set, she told the magazine, is “a little tricky. Kit got more money than me, but he had a bigger storyline. And for the last series, he had something crazy like 70 night shoots, and I didn’t have that many. I was like, ‘You know what… you keep that money.'”

As The Hollywood Reporter wrote in 2014 about negotiations for the show’s seventh season, the cast—among the highest-paid on cable TV—is divided into tiers to determine compensation: Tier A includes the main roles, played by actors including Harington, Lena Headey (Cersei Lannister), and Emilia Clarke (Daenerys Targaryen). Tier B includes Turner and Maisie Williams (Arya Stark); and there’s another tier beyond that’s filled by actors with smaller roles.

But Turner’s still been able to wield her influence to advance equality behind the scenes: As she told Harper’s Bazaar UK, she has an inclusion rider in her contract, which stipulates that the male/female ratio of a project’s workforce is an even 50-50. And when there’s so much work to be done in the industry, every step forward counts.
