‘My IVF Failed. Then the Bills Started Showing Up’

Experiences of infertility always have one thing in common: uncertainty. The countless visits to doctors, the months (or years) of planning, the tens of thousands of dollars, never add up to a guarantee. Even under the best of circumstances, there’s only so much about a pregnancy you can plan, and in the midst of a global pandemic, the idea of planning anything seems foolish. For National Infertility Awareness Week, we’re exploring the uncertainty—and the hope.

When I was presented with the option of financing two rounds of in vitro fertilization (IVF), I didn’t think twice. I asked where to sign and borrowed roughly $30,000 to make my dream of motherhood come true.

I was only 27 at the time and single. But while most of my peers still had years to figure out their future families, my time was running out. I’d recently been diagnosed with a very aggressive case of endometriosis. My doctors had explained that my fertility was quickly dwindling and that it was time to consider fertility treatments before my options disappeared completely. The only thing I knew for sure was that I had always wanted to be a mother. The thought of losing that chance wasn’t something I was willing to consider.

Of course, others had their opinions on my decision to finance this dream. Thirty thousand dollars is a lot of debt to take on, and most people I spoke with about my decision at the time seemed to think it was a bad idea. There were raised eyebrows over my age, concerns about my single status, and judgments about putting myself in so much debt over medical treatments some deemed elective.

The way I saw it, people borrowed far more every day for car loans and college educations, neither of which seemed as important to me as this. I had a decent paying job and the financial means to afford the monthly payments on the loan. And most importantly, this wasn’t something I had years to decide upon. This was my one chance—I was simply thankful financing options existed that would allow me to take it.

“What if you do all this and you come out with nothing to show for it in the end?” one friend asked. Failure wasn’t a possibility in my mind. All my life, I’d believed that I could have anything I wanted so long as I worked hard enough. I’d taken big risks in the past and worked hard to reap the rewards. I truly believed trying was all it would take to succeed.

I was wrong. Both rounds of IVF failed, and by the time I turned 28, I was broke, broken, and left with little hope that I would ever become a mom. It wasn’t supposed to happen like this. I never would have taken on that debt if I had truly believed the treatments wouldn’t work. But that’s the thing about pregnancy—it’s not a simple matter of working hard. It didn’t matter that I was young, that I had done everything “right” to realize my dream of getting pregnant. Some factors were simply beyond my control.

My loans didn’t stipulate an option to cease payment if the treatments didn’t work. I was on the hook either way. The bills that continued to come in even after I walked away from fertility treatments felt like a monthly punch to the gut. Yes, this was what I had signed up for. But I’d never considered I would one day be paying those bills with nothing to show for it. Every dollar withdrawn from my account sliced away at my psyche; a painful reminder of what I’d lost and the cost I’d paid to lose it.

Within a year of my IVF cycles, I required three major abdominal surgeries with an out-of-state specialist due to complications from my endometriosis. These surgeries were medically essential, having everything to do with my quality of life and nothing to do with my fertility. But the bills that rolled in because of them piled up on top of the debts I’d already taken on. Before I knew it, I was drowning in medical debt and questioning every decision I’d ever made. But I was also questioning the industry that had encouraged me to make those decisions, convincing me to gamble such a large amount of money with no guarantee of anything to show for it in the end. I met women who’d been through 8, 9, and 10 rounds of IVF without a single positive outcome to show for it. I was proud of myself for walking away after only two but also heartbroken about what that meant for my future.

Three years after my last failed IVF cycle, while still owing over $65,000 because of those treatments and the surgeries that followed, I had a chance meeting with a woman who, upon learning I couldn’t have children, asked if I would adopt the baby she was due to give birth to. The whole thing was a whirlwind. Adoptions don’t typically happen this easily, and I know how lucky I am. But a week later, I was in the delivery room holding my baby girl, thinking of her as the silver lining in it all.

Katie Holmes Shared Unretouched Photos on Instagram Showing Off Her Stretch Marks

It’s hard to go even a day without seeing a story about Katie Holmes’s on-point street style, full of fashionable fall jackets, chic sweaters and perfectly-styled evening wear. But now the actress is making headlines for something else she’s wearing amazingly well: her stretch marks.

Earlier this week, the 40-year-old took to Instagram to share behind-the-scenes pics from Vogue Australia that clearly show off the stretch marks on her stomach. Fans were quick to praise the actress for posting the unedited photos, proudly flaunting the lines that peaked out behind her blazer and black bra.

“#Bts @vogueaustralia ??? it is wonderful to be working today with such amazing women!” Holmes captioned the two pictures, in which she sports slicked-back wet hair, natural makeup and gold earrings. The pictures are by far some of the most popular in her feed, amassing almost 80,000 likes since it was shared.

Several of Holmes’s followers commented on the pics, thanking her for being real about her body on social media. “Just seeing this made me cry because it means so much to show the beauty of your natural body,” one person wrote. “I’ve always had issues showing my marks as a mother of three. Seeing this gives me strength.”

Another added: “Thank you, you’ve made me feel so much better about my stretch marks, which I am always down on myself about!!! You are truly an inspiration.”

“Stunning… untouched…awesome example for our young girls growing up having to see so many retouched photos and unnatural bodies,” another fan noted.

Many others applauded the actress for showing the honest side of pregnancy. (Holmes has a 13-year-old daughter, Suri Cruise.) “Wow such a beautiful woman you are, Katie. You’ve made a statement to all us woman out there who struggle with pregnancy stretch marks. Thank you for presenting your all-natural self,” one fan penned.

Holmes is the latest in a slew of inspirational famous women, including Ashley Graham, Chrissy Teigen and Hilary Duff, who are fighting back at beauty standards by sharing their perceived “flaws,” from cellulite to leg hair to acne, on social media. It’s much-needed proof that there’s no such thing, even in Hollywood, as the perfect body.

Simone Biles On Serena Williams, Showing Emotions and Being Unafraid to Own Her Greatness

Simone Biles has learned to embrace her greatness even though she sometimes has trouble wrapping her mind around just how good she’s become. But as the countdown to the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo begins, the superstar athlete, who was recently declared the most decorated female gymnast of all time, said she’s not going to hold back or deny that she’s good at what she does.

“It’s important to teach our female youth that it’s OK to say, ‘Yes, I am good at this,’ and you don’t hold back,” Biles said in an interview with USA TODAY.

The 22-year-old explained, “You only see the men doing it. And they’re praised for it and the women are looked down upon for it. But I feel like it’s good (to do) because once you realize you’re confident and good at it, then you’re even better at what you do.”

“It’s not out of cockiness,” she added. “I’ve won five world titles and if I say, ‘I’m the best gymnast there is,’ (the reaction is) ‘Oh, she’s cocky. Look at her now.’ No, the facts are literally on the paper. I think it’s important to teach (young girls) that.”

Biles went on to say that one of the things her favorite athlete, Serena Williams, taught her growing up is to own her confidence and not be afraid to show real, raw emotion.

“You don’t have to be a robot all the time, and you don’t always have to seem happy out there,” Biles explained. “It also shows kids that it’s OK, if you’re enjoying the moment, to smile, to be happy. If you’re not having a good time, it’s OK, you don’t have to hide that from people.”

Earlier this week, Biles made history by successfully landing the triple-double during her floor routine—a move that is now officially dubbed the Biles II. And on Thursday, October 10, she added another medal to her growing collection: She earned her 16th gold medal at the gymnastics world championships in Stuttgart, Germany, after winning her fifth world all-around title.

After her win, she admitted, “I really don’t know how I do it sometimes.”

“I don’t know; I feel like it’s not me,” Biles continued, per The New York Times. “Sometimes I wonder how I do it. I feel like it’s just, like, not me. I wish I could have like an out-of-body experience to witness it because sometimes I think I’m going crazy.”

Charli XCX Had an Iconic Response to Her Tampon String Showing Onstage

Music fans know that Charli XCX’s performances are a glittery, high-energy, all-inclusive party. But on Friday night, a surprise guest on her Austin, Texas, tour stop took her show in a down-to-earth (and hilarious) new direction.

In a video posted to her Instagram account, Charli XCX gave a shout-out to — wait for it — her tampon string, which had come out of her costume during her performance. “My tampon string is out tonight,” she said onstage as the crowd started screaming in delight. “Last night I was like, I thought it came out, but tonight, it came out, Austin.”

Instead of treating the episode like a wardrobe malfunction, Charli owned her tampon’s surprise appearance.”MY TAMPON STRING STOLE
THE SHOW,” she captioned her social media video. “HER STAGE PRESENCE IS ICONIC TBH. ??”

Her fans laughed with her in the comments. “Iconic !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Tampon commander of collabs,” one person wrote.

It’s not that surprising that Charli XCX would turn her tampon string’s cameo into an Internet moment. The singer has a refreshingly carefree attitude — her first hit was literally called “I Don’t Care, I Love It” — and when it comes to her onstage raves, everyone’s invited (including the odd feminine hygiene product).

In an interview with Glamour earlier this year, Charli said that her fans are the type that let her be totally honest onstage. “[My fans] really care about me, and I really care about them. We’re speaking the same language, and maybe nobody else gets that language, but we totally understand. I just feel my music is now a safe space for me to be really honest. I don’t feel afraid.”

So if you take anything away from Charli XCX’s tampon debacle, let it be this: There’s no shame in letting it all hang out. And if you’re not following Charli XCX’s on Instagram, you’re really missing out.

Other celebrity friends were here for her post: “❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️,” Lily Aldridge commented. Makeup artist Katie Jane Hughes dropped in three two-heart emojis. Even Dr. Pimple Popper got in on the emoji shower: “?????????”

Or, as she captioned another iconic pic, “I workout. I do my best to eat well. I love the skin I’m in. And I’m not ashamed of a few lumps, bumps or cellulite.. and you shouldn’t be either. #beautybeyondsize #lovetheskinyourein.”

During pregnancy or otherwise, we’re here for all of the positivity and realness Graham has to share, whenever she wants to share it.

Kate Middleton and Prince William Made a Rare Showing of PDA in Ireland

Usually when it comes to royals showing off some PDA, our brains think of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. After all, they are still newlyweds, so it’s not surprising when they pull off a double hand-hold or back rub while out on official business on behalf of the Queen. On the other hand, Prince William and Kate Middleton are typically more reserved when they’re out on their official public engagements, but the two were caught getting a little snuggly while they were on their most recent trip to Northern Ireland this past Wednesday (February 27) and Thursday (February 28).

While mingling with guests at an event reception at Belfast’s Empire Music Hall, the couple were captured on camera showing each other some affection. As Kate moves on from speaking to a group of guests, she sweetly puts her hand on William’s back as he puts his arm around her waist, pulling her in close.

See for yourself in the clip below—it’s subtle, loving, and sweet.

The couple’s cute moments on the trip weren’t just limited to some PDA—they also looked adorable pulling pints.

They also showed off their soccer—excuse me, “football”—skills on the pitch.

They even battled it out with each other in a canoe race. (William’s team took the victory this time around.)

We will always stan a couple that knows how to find the right mix of loving gestures and friendly competition. Cheers to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge!
