Serena Williams Just Played Her First Tennis Match After Giving Birth 3 Months Ago

Most of us had a pretty bleh 2017, but Serena Williams, champion in every sense of the word, managed to have a pretty spectacular year. She got married and had a baby and is still considered the best tennis player on the planet. So does it matter that she lost her final match of 2017 and her first since giving birth? Not one bit.

“I don’t think I am going to rate my performance,” she told the AP, per Vanity Fair. “I have plenty of comebacks, from injuries, from surgeries, but I’ve never had a comeback after actually giving birth to a human being. So, in my eyes, I feel it was a wonderful, wonderful match for me.”

The match in question was an exhibition game at the Mubadala World Tennis Championship, and the winner was French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko. Williams said of her return to the game overall, “I don’t know if I am totally ready to come back on the tour yet …I know that when I come back I definitely want to be competing for championships. I am definitely looking forward to getting back out there. I am taking it one day at a time. I am going to assess everything with my team before deciding.” Fair enough.

“I don’t think I have anything more left to prove,” said Williams, referencing her dozens of grand slam titles and trove of gold medals. But she’s not done with tennis yet, and the first step was just getting back on the court. “In the beginning, it felt a little tough. But as the match moved on, I was less afraid. I knew I was not going to fall over and break,” she said.

It’s not like she was gone for too long, actually. Williams’ break from the game started in January, when she was already several weeks pregnant with her daughter Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr., so she’s beginning and ending 2017 as a tennis player. And she managed to squeeze in a wedding to the Alexis Ohanian, founder of Reddit.

She even achieved the most rare and elusive award of all: an Instagram shout-out from her close friend Beyoncé.

Serena Williams' Christmas Pic With Baby Alexis Is Here to Remind You She's the G.O.A.T.

Serena Williams is the Greatest Of All Time, a.k.a. the G.O.A.T. Sure, pretty much all new moms are G.O.A.T.s (case in point: 4 A.M. feedings), but Williams’ title is literal, having been ranked No. 1 in the entire world in women’s tennis singles eight times in the past 15 years. And, um, remember when she won the Australian Open while pregnant with her daughter, Alexis Olympia Ohanian, Jr.?

Now, Alexis is 3 months old, totally adorable, and enjoying her first Christmas with her family. You didn’t think Williams would leave us all without a photo of her daughter‘s Christmas debut, did you? Williams shared the snap, complete with a Christmas-themed Snapchat filter, and it’s almost too precious for words. (We’re glad to see that little Alexis doesn’t seem to be suffering from teething woes during the holiday, too!)

The photo itself is a simple selfie of Williams and her firstborn, but what we love most about it isn’t necessarily what’s in the foreground. Take a look right between mom and daughter.

Check that photo of Williams killing it on the tennis court in the background: a lil’ reminder for us that while she’s doing wonderfully at being a mom right now, she’s still the Queen of the Courts. Williams is actually set to return to the tennis court for the first time since giving birth this Saturday—and she’s doing it big. Williams will be playing at the Mubadala exhibition event in Abu Dhabi, and she’s one of the first women to do so. It pretty much makes her the definition of a cool mom—G.O.A.T., Snapchat filters, and all.

Serena Williams Is Asking Instagram Moms for Teething Pain Remedies for Her Daughter

In what might be one of her most relevant Instagram posts yet, Serena Williams is asking moms on Instagram and Twitter for help. It turns out that little Alexis Olympia is having teething troubles, as many babies do. Williams reached out on social media to enlist the support of other moms who have been in the same position—and goodness, did they have some advice to share. After all, it’s not an unusual situation, as difficult as it might seem to the parents trying to calm their children.

“Teething- aka the devil – is so hard,” Williams wrote. “Poor Alexis Olympia has been so uncomfortable. She cried so much (she never cries) I had to hold her until she fell asleep. I’ve tried amber beads… cold towels…. chew on mommies fingers…. homeopathic water (lol on that one) but nothing is working. It’s breaking my heart. I almost need my mom to come and hold me to sleep cause I’m so stressed. Help? Anyone??”

Instagram moms chimed in with lots of help. Several suggested frozen waffles, others frozen teething rings or rubber toys or chilled celery sticks.

“Once she is a bit older I found clove oil works well!” another commiserated. “I pop it on my sons teether! At first he thought it was spicy- now he loves it as recognizes the relief! ?”

Williams posted the same request for advice on Twitter in a two-part message, and she received a ton of support.

“This is every single new parent,” one user wrote. “We’ve all been there. It is so tough and it is completely okay to want your mom and to want sleep and to want to cry for a hundred years. And if you haven’t consider calling your paediatrician and talking the best way to use baby pain relief so she can get a little sleep (ie alternating types etc) and so can you.”

Practical advice also came in spades: “Rubbing her gums helps with the pain of teething. Also try some harder foods, like a chilled carrot because that will also help ease the pain. If nothing helps, children’s Motrin or any ibuprofen for babies should be okay.”

And when all else fails, Mom is always there to help.

Beyoncé, Hillary Clinton, and Serena Williams Tree Toppers Now Exist, So Christmas Is Saved

Beyoncé owns land at the top. It’s her home. And I’m not talking about anything specific when I say “the top.” I just mean “the top”—of the charts, of the fashion world, the Super Bowl, the Grammys…you name it. Queen Bey’s natural place is on a diamond-encrusted perch, overlooking her kingdom of fans and followers. The same goes for Hillary Clinton and Serena Williams, too. These three women are so successful, famous, and revered that it’s almost too overwhelming putting their names in one sentence. The shine is just too bright.

So it’s only natural they be at the top of your Christmas trees this year—literally. A brilliant U.K-based nonprofit organization named Women to Look Up To decided to add a twist to the normal star and angel Christmas tree-toppers. Now you can decorate your tree with actual stars and IRL angels. And thus Beyoncé, Clinton, and Williams toppers were born. They sell for about $107 each, and Women to Look Up To reinvests all of its profits into “furthering female equality,” so your money’s going to a worthwhile cause. Plus, this means Beyoncé will be on top of your Christmas tree! Name something more exciting than that.

Check out the Bey, Clinton, and Williams decorations for yourself, below:

Williams is playing tennis in hers, naturally.

And Clinton’s never looked more regal than with angel wings.

If $107 is too steep for you, though, Women to Look Up To also sells card packs with other powerful female faces on them, including Angelina Jolie and Adele. ‘Tis the season to be feminist, am I right?

Serena Williams' Wedding Ring Is the Ninth Wonder of the World

Serena Williams is the GOAT tennis player and GOAT bride—she received personal dress guidance from Anna Wintour, I mean, come on—and now she also has the GOAT wedding ring. By that, we mean the biggest, sparkliest, blingiest ring you’ve ever seen in your entire life. It’s even bigger than her engagement ring. Does this sound like hyperbole? Yes. Is it? No! And I have so many questions about it, too. Like, how does it exist? Because the laws of physics seem to directly contradict it.

But first, let’s backtrack to the wedding, because that is where she acquired this rock that was last valued at “more than my life.” The Beauty and the Beast-themed nuptials were a week ago in New Orleans, and the guest list included Wintour, Beyoncé, and Kim Kardashian—exactly the top three you’d want if you were going to have a famous-person wedding. Williams married Reddit’s co-founder, Alexis Ohanian, so that’s #powercouplegoals right there, and she wore three dresses at the ceremony and reception—two of them Versace, one of them custom-designed by Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen, who also did Kate Middleton’s iconic gown. The latter was designed with a cape: Williams wanted to feel like a “superhero” on her wedding day, because she knows who she is. What a night! I only regret my invitation was lost in the mail.

Williams and Ohanian’s daughter, whose name is Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr. and already has more social media followers than you do, was also present. The GOAT Jr. was bedecked in finery and sitting in her maternal grandmother’s lap.

Speaking of the infant, her latest appearance was in an Instagram with her Grand-Slamming mama on Wednesday, and that, dear readers, is where we get to the extremely good part: Williams’ ring.

This ‘gram wasn’t really about Alexis at all, if you look at it closely—despite it apparently being a self-portrait the 10-week-old posted to her Instagram account (upside-down selfie! So novel!). Nor, despite her assertion in the caption, is it about the leopard print. I mean, yes, Alexis is there, but so is that massive rock on Williams’ left hand, which is so big it almost pushed the fledgling Olympian (just re-read her middle name if you don’t believe me) out of the frame.

Look at this wonder:

Thank goodness Williams is an athlete, because it must take some serious arm strength to lift her hand now. On the bright side, there is no way that ring is going to get lost down the sink. Oh, and it’s freaking gorgeous.

Serena Williams Wore Not One, but Three Stunning Wedding Dresses for Her New Orleans Nuptials

Last Thursday in New Orleans, Serena Williams tied the knot with Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian. Reports from People shared that Williams’ Beauty and the Beast-themed wedding was the celebrity event of the month: Kim Kardashian West, Anna Wintour, and Beyoncé were all in attendance. We had to wait a few days more for the most important detail from her nuptials, though: A glimpse at the dress she wore down the aisle.

On Vogue, we finally got a peek at what Williams wore for her big “I do”—though as it turns out, she wore not one, but three different dresses on the day. For her ceremony gown, Williams worked with Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen, the designer who also made Kate Middleton’s iconic wedding dress, topping off the strapless, belted princess gown–complete with cape—with $3.5 million in sparkling jewels. And the fullest, pouffiest skirt we’ve ever seen.

“I flew to London to meet with Sarah and ended up falling in love with the ball gown silhouette, which is completely the opposite of what I ever thought I would choose for myself,” Serena told Vogue. “I loved the idea of doing a really spectacular ball gown, and it has turned out to be such an incredibly special piece.”

Williams debuted her second dress of the big day at the reception dinner—and it was appropriately festive: think beads, feathers, and Versace. Donatella Versace told Vogue it took five embroiderers a total of 1,500 hours to make the gown. The third dress came out for the after-dinner party: this time, another Versace dress—with a short skirt for dancing, of course.

Williams’ wedding dresses are her latest big style moment since returning to the public eye post-pregnancy, and we’re here for it. For her first public appearance since giving birth, she arrived at the Glamour Women of the Year Awards in straight-off-the-runway Versace—a hint, perhaps, at what was to come.

Judging by these first glimpses, Williams can add a stellar wedding dress selection to her long list of victories.
