How to Match Your Foundation: 8 Tips & Tricks

Foundation is the rare makeup product you don’t want to be able to see. Ask any pro how to match foundation, and they’ll tell you the final result should be a seamless veil that makes your skin look like skin. But sometimes, despite your best efforts, what looks like a good match in the bottle ends up being a less-than-perfect shade once applied. Whether it’s because you misjudged your undertones or the formula oxidized, it’s easy to end up with a bottle that’s almost right, but not good enough for daily wear. To ensure it doesn’t happen, take a cue from those who apply foundation best: professional makeup artists.

There are a few factors to consider before you even buy the bottle that’ll guarantee you’re picking a shade that fully matches your face—and getting the most from the formula you choose. Below, we asked makeup artists to explain the best process for how to match foundation, so you find your perfect shade every time.

1. Determine your undertones.

“The most important thing is to figure out your undertones first,” says Jane Iredale global makeup artist Hannah Hatcher. “Once you have those figured out, it narrows things down and you can begin to swatch on your skin tyu find that perfect match.” Undertones fall into three categories: warm, cool, and neutral. Warm undertones are golden, cool lean more pink or red, and neutral is a mix of both. Look at the overall tones of your skin to determine which applies. It can be a confusing process, so if you’re not sure, there are a couple more tricks to try.

“Usually, it’s about the veins,” says celebrity makeup artist Robert Sesnek. “Blue veins are cool, blue/green are neutral, and green are warm.” You can also consider the clothing and accessories that suit you best. “If you look better in cooler-toned clothing, chances are you also have cool undertones,” says Sesnek.

2. Read reviews and look for photo references.

Experts agree that testing shades in-person is the best way to find a match, but it’s still worth it to compare online reviews of brands you’re interested in first. This is particularly true if you’ve had a hard time finding a shade that closely matches both your skin tone and undertones. Many sites like Amazon and Sephora let reviewers leave photos, so you can see what shades look like on other people, while others feature shade-matching charts and model references that help too.

3. Take the finish of your foundation into consideration.

Full-coverage foundations are great for covering acne or discoloration, but they’re also harder shade match. Instead, Sesnek recommends opting for a sheer foundation with a buildable finish, since it’ll allow for more margin of error. (His personal favorite is Catrice Cosmetics HD Foundation because it can easily build up to a high-coverage base.)

4. Test shades on multiple spots of your face.

The most common advice you’ll hear is to swipe a small streak of foundation across your jawline (starting on your jaw down to your neck). Celebrity makeup artist Frederick Sanders recommends starting with two or three shades that look closest to your complexion and blending them all in fully. “The foundation should match the side of your face and your neck to prevent you from looking like you’re wearing a mask,” he says.

If you have a trickier time nailing down a shade though, pros recommend testing in other places too. “I swatch on multiple spots: jawline, cheek, forehead, and neck,” says celebrity makeup artist Emily Cheng. “I’ll usually go with one that matches my neck and forehead the most because that’s where I get the most color.”

5. Test it for a few hours.

It’s worth taking the time to test and wear before you buy. “A foundation in the bottle in its liquid state is a certain color, and it can oxidize on your face and change color as it dries or sets,” says Troy Surratt, makeup artist and founder of Surratt Beauty. “It can also change depending on your personal pH and chemistry.” Seeing how it adjusts to your skin over the course of a day is absolutely key.

Rihanna Attended a Football Match Carrying a $3,500 Inflatable Soccer Ball as a Purse

Rihanna attended a soccer match in Turin, Italy, wearing an accessory only she could pull off: a Louis Vuitton ball-shaped purse.

The beauty mogul attended the Juventus vs Athletic Madrid UEFA Champions League match with her brother earlier this week, and all eyes were on her very appropriate accessory.

According to Page Six, the limited-edition piece, featuring the signature brown LV monogram pattern and a leather shoulder strap, was originally created in the late ’90s to celebrate the 1998 World Cup in France. And it wasn’t actually even designed to be a purse. Instead, it’s an inflatable ball that comes with a tip to blow air in it like a real soccer ball.

It’s not clear how much the vintage “bag” costs, but pre-owned versions are available online starting at $2,800 and up to $3,500.

To complete her look, Rihanna wore a monochromatic brown outfit—all pieces from her Fenty clothing line—and accessorized it with sunglasses, a scarf, and Louis Vuitton ankle boots.

During the game, she also posed for photos with a Juventus jersey that had “Riri” printed on the back. It even featured the number 20, likely chosen in honor of her birthday on February 20.

Prince William and Kate Middleton Took Prince George and Princess Charlotte to a Soccer Match

On Saturday, the royal family partook in a tried-and-true fall Saturday outing: watching a soccer match. But all eyes were squarely on Prince George who unequivocally won the sporting event thanks to his, shall we say, more than enthusiastic celebrations.

The 6-year-old was spotted in the stands clapping, waving and cheering on Aston Villa (who also happens to be his dad’s favorite team) as they took on Norwich City. While Princess Charlotte watched quietly while seated next to Kate Middleton (Prince Louis did not seem to be in attendance) George was enthralled with every moment, turning to Prince William to share in his excitement.

The future king of England quickly began trending on Twitter for his over-the-top expressions — it’s what the rest of us look like watching Bachelor in Paradise.

Here’s George strategizing the team’s next moves with his dad:

Why The Bachelor's Kirpa Sudick Thought She and Colton Would Make a Great Match

Kirpa Sudick had perhaps one of the most memorable Bachelor opening lines in history: “I really hope Colton flosses. It would be a good experience to clean his teeth.” This makes sense when you learn more about Sudick, a 26-year-old dental hygienist from Whittier, California. So, yes, clean teeth are very important to her.

But that’s not the only relationship barometer she has. Sudick is also an avid journal user and wants her potential boyfriend to have a similar appetite from books. “I hope that my future partner enjoys reading, and constantly learning and growing,” she says.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem like that partner will be Colton Underwood. Kirpa was eliminated in tonight’s episode, but she’s staying optimistic. “The dream scenario was to have a connection with Colton and further that into a relationship and at the end of it be engaged, but [I’m happy I] made new friends and traveled and enjoyed everyone’s company.”

Sudick haphazardly decided to sign up for The Bachelor. “I had just come off a break-up and my friends were like, ‘This online dating thing isn’t working for you, why don’t you submit yourself for The Bachelor?’ It was kind of a joking thing, but I went on my phone and did it.”

She had no expectations going in—not even about Colton. “I was excited,” she says. “I didn’t really have anyone in mind [during the process of who it would be]. I was excited to meet him and see if we had a connection.” Ultimately, though, Kirpa thought her and Colton’s mutual love of children and animals would make them a good match. “[I liked] on Becca’s season when he took her to his hometown and they worked with kids at the hospital,” Kirpa says. “I thought we would connect that way.”

Now that this process is over, Sudick has a clearer idea of what she wants in a relationship. One big thing she’s looking for is communication. “Your partner needs to be able to express how he’s feeling and if he needs something, don’t be shy about bringing it to light,” she says. “[I need] someone that is very open.”

Serena Williams Calls Roger Federer the 'Greatest of All Time' After Historic Tennis Match

Tennis champions Serena Williams and Roger Federer faced off for the first time during a historic doubles match at the Hopman Cup in Australia on Tuesday. Even though Federer emerged the victor from the New Year’s Day match, Williams’ graceful reaction proved exactly why she’s still the GOAT.

The 23-time Grand Slam title holder was all smiles after she and her partner Francis Tiafoe played Federer and his teammate Belinda Bencic. In moments after the match and in a subsequent interview with the two players, it’s clear the tennis greats are friendly: Williams praised Federer and shared how excited she was to get the chance to compete against him.

“It was a great experience. I’m kind of sad it’s over—you know, I was just warming up,” she joked. “We grew up together, really, and having an opportunity, after all these years, we’ve actually never done this, and so this was super cool that we got to do this at such a pinnacle point in both our careers. For me, it was super cool. I literally wanted to take pictures and bring my baby out. I was way too excited.”

“The guy is great, he’s the greatest of all time to be honest. Both on the court and off the court. He has such charisma and is a wonderful player,” she continued.

Federer had a lot to say about Williams as well: “I was nervous returning because you just don’t know. People talk about her serve so much, and I see why it’s such a wonderful serve because you just can’t read it,” he said before Williams’ cut in with, “I can’t read yours either!”

“We have the same qualities,” Federer offered with a laugh.

Williams spent a lot of her 2018 making huge strides for women athletes by speaking about sexism, sharing candid stories about motherhood, and even—successfully—challenging the rules of fashion in tennis. It’s great to see she’s starting her 2019 in true sportsmanlike style.

Serena Williams Just Played Her First Tennis Match After Giving Birth 3 Months Ago

Most of us had a pretty bleh 2017, but Serena Williams, champion in every sense of the word, managed to have a pretty spectacular year. She got married and had a baby and is still considered the best tennis player on the planet. So does it matter that she lost her final match of 2017 and her first since giving birth? Not one bit.

“I don’t think I am going to rate my performance,” she told the AP, per Vanity Fair. “I have plenty of comebacks, from injuries, from surgeries, but I’ve never had a comeback after actually giving birth to a human being. So, in my eyes, I feel it was a wonderful, wonderful match for me.”

The match in question was an exhibition game at the Mubadala World Tennis Championship, and the winner was French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko. Williams said of her return to the game overall, “I don’t know if I am totally ready to come back on the tour yet …I know that when I come back I definitely want to be competing for championships. I am definitely looking forward to getting back out there. I am taking it one day at a time. I am going to assess everything with my team before deciding.” Fair enough.

“I don’t think I have anything more left to prove,” said Williams, referencing her dozens of grand slam titles and trove of gold medals. But she’s not done with tennis yet, and the first step was just getting back on the court. “In the beginning, it felt a little tough. But as the match moved on, I was less afraid. I knew I was not going to fall over and break,” she said.

It’s not like she was gone for too long, actually. Williams’ break from the game started in January, when she was already several weeks pregnant with her daughter Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr., so she’s beginning and ending 2017 as a tennis player. And she managed to squeeze in a wedding to the Alexis Ohanian, founder of Reddit.

She even achieved the most rare and elusive award of all: an Instagram shout-out from her close friend Beyoncé.
