Buckingham Palace Is Selling $40 Replicas of Meghan Markle's Engagement Ring


Meghan Markle has worn a number of shoppable looks since becoming the duchess of Sussex. But there’s one item even the most royal-obsessed can’t get their hands on through official avenues: an exact copy of her engagement ring. Cleave and Company, the London-based company that made Markle’s ring, announced last winter that it wouldn’t make official replicas of of the diamond piece. But the Buckingham Palace gift shop is now selling the next best thing.

This week the Royal Collection, which operates the official gift shop of Buckingham Palace, released a collection of “statement jewelry” online, which includes a ring that is reminiscent of Markle’s engagement ring. And the likeness isn’t coincidental: Per the product description, “the design of this new statement range is inspired by the engagement ring of Meghan Markle.”

Retailing for 30 British pounds (approximately $40 U.S.), the Buckingham Palace Statement Ring is “made of sparkling crystals set on palladium plated metal.” And, yes, the Royal Collection ships worldwide.

Buckingham Palace seems to be merchandising the “Markle Sparkle” for all it’s worth. Along with the Markle-inspired statement ring, the shop is selling coordinating pieces that also site the duchess of Sussex as the design inspiration. Take these earrings, for instance.

This definitely isn’t the first time that replicas of Meghan Markle’s wardrobe have been sold: Shortly after the royal wedding, bridal brands began hawking imitations of the duchess’s wedding gowns by Claire Waight Keller for Givenchy and Stella McCartney. This appears to be a new phenomenon for Buckingham Palace, though—the royal collection currently doesn’t sell pieces “inspired by” Kate Middleton‘s ring (we checked).

Blake Lively's Engagement Ring in *A Simple Favor* Was Inspired by Princess Diana's


If you’ve seen the trailer for Blake Lively and Anna Kendrick’s new film, A Simple Favor, you know that there’s a lot to take in—from power suits to figuring out what happened to Lively’s character, Emily. So you might have missed a surprising detail of Emily’s wardrobe: her engagement ring, which happens to look quite similar to a certain iconic royal’s.

In a new interview with People, Renée Ehrlich Kalfus, A Simple Favor‘s costume designer, revealed that Emily’s engagement ring is purposefully made to resemble royal jewels. “It’s a take on Princess Diana’s ring,” she said, referring to the vintage sapphire-and-diamond ring that was once worn by the Princess of Wales, and that Prince William later used to propose to Kate Middleton.

According to People, the ring serves as an “important plot point” in the film, and was once worn by Lively’s character’s mother-in-law—but we’ll just have to wait until the movie comes out on September 14 to find out more.

“I wanted to do something vintage, but the director [Paul Feig] thought it should be more on the nose,” Ehlrich added.

Blake Lively’s Engagement Ring in A Simple Favor Was Inspired By Princess Diana lead

While you may be familiar with the recent history of Princess Diana’s ring, you may not realize that its story actually stretches far beyond the era of the “People’s Princess.” The inspiration for the piece actually goes all the way back to the 1840s, when Prince Albert had a sapphire-and-diamond broach designed for his soon-to-be wife, Queen Victoria. She loved it so much, she wore it as her “something blue” on her wedding day, and continued to wear it until her husband’s death in 1861. It was later passed along to Queen Elizabeth II, and it’s said that Prince Charles used the broach as inspiration when he was picking out the ring for Princess Diana.

While Lively’s real-life ring from husband Ryan Reynolds doesn’t have quite the same royal history as the inspiration for her onscreen one, it actually does have some surprising similarities: Like Princess Diana’s ring, the actress’s includes an oval central stone surrounded by diamonds, but instead of a 12-karat sapphire, it’s a seven-karat light pink diamond (and unlike Diana’s/Kate’s/Emily Nelson’s platinum band, Lively’s ring features a rose gold one.)

Meghan Markle's Wedding Ring Has Reportedly Caused a Boost in Interest in Welsh Gold


Ever since Meghan Markle made her first public appearance with Prince Harry and fully stepped into the spotlight as a royal-to-be last year, all eyes have been on her every move and, of course, her every outfit. Now that she’s a duchess, her wardrobe gets even more attention—and it is proven that her sartorial choices can have a financial impact, as some of the fashion brands she’s worn have reported a boost in sales (or sold out of a specific product) because of the royal “endorsement.” And it appears the Meghan Markle Effect applies to wedding-guest dresses and wedding jewelry alike.

People reports that there’s been a rise in interest in Welsh gold after it was was reported that Markle’s wedding band was crafted out of the rare metal. Clogau, a family-owned jeweler in North Wales that specializes in local materials, told the magazine that it got “a lot of exposure when there is a royal wedding…. It was the same when William and Kate got married. It definitely gives business a boost. Whenever the public becomes aware of the royal connection, then there is increased interest in rare Welsh gold.”

The Duchess of Sussex’s wedding band wasn’t made by Clogau but by Cleave and Company, the London court jewelers and medallists to Queen Elizabeth II (which was also responsible for Markle’s engagement ring.) The Welsh gold that Cleave and Company used in Markle’s ring was gifted to her by the queen, per People, and aligns with a nearly century-old tradition of using the metal in royal wedding bands: In 1923 the queen mother, Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, had her wedding ring made using gold from the Clogau St. David’s mine that had been donated to the royal family; since then Princess Diana, Duchess Camilla, and Kate Middleton have all reportedly included the rare metal in their own bands.

Still, while people may now be more interested in Welsh gold, there’s still a finite amount in the world, and thus chances are slim that all those people will actually be able to get their hands on a ring like Meghan’s—Markle Effect or not.

The *Crazy Rich Asians* Engagement Ring Has a Sweet Backstory


If you came out of Crazy Rich Asians with quite a few pieces of wedding inspo, you can at least partially thank Michelle Yeoh. Turns out, the second (gorgeous, emerald) ring that Nick (Henry Golding) proposes to Rachel (Constance Wu) with, which comes from his mom, Yeoh’s character Eleanor, actually belongs to the actress in real life. Director Jon M. Chu spilled the beans to Vulture in a piece published on Thursday (August 24).

“We had a ring designed already, and our mock-up looked so sh*tty that Michelle [Yeoh] was like, ‘That cannot be the ring I wear,’” Chu told Vulture. “I’m like, ‘I know, I know. I’m so embarrassed by it, but we don’t have the money.’ She’s like, ‘I have a better ring than that.’”

As Chu told Vulture, Yeoh then had her assistant fetch her jewelry box, whereupon she revealed a gorgeous emerald-and-diamond number she’d originally bought as a gift to herself (!). “She pulls it out, and I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, that’s our ring,’” Chu said in the interview.

As for other details you can steal for your own wedding, the stunning pastel blue gown that Rachel wears to Colin (Chris Pang) and Araminta’s (Sonoya Mizuno) wedding is made by Marchesa. Meanwhile, the wedding dress itself was actually a Mary Vogt–designed jumpsuit that came complete with a 10-foot train, “thousands” of Swarovski crystals, and “waterproof material.”

And for the part where Araminta walked on water as she came down the aisle, production designer Nelson Coates says he used a “flower-lined water aisle, constructed in truck-able segments, and somehow waterproofed during the fast installation.” Here are a few more details, in case you don’t have a crazy rich budget and want to do it yourself: Coates told Brides that he laminated the waterproofed marine plywood aisle with a reflective fabric, lined it with orchids, bromeliads, and ferns, and hid water jets among the plants to adjust the volume and direction of water. Happy crafting!

Hailey Baldwin’s Engagement Ring Is Honestly Even Bigger Than I Imagined


After months of trying to catch a glimpse of it from grainy paparazzi photos, fans finally have a good look at Hailey Baldwin‘s engagement ring from Justin Bieber, and it’s even more stunning and sparkly than you’d expect.

The model appears on the September cover of Vogue México, and her enormous diamond ring is front and center in the photo. In the black-and-white shot, Baldwin is seen resting her head on her arm, with her hand casually draped in front of her, allowing a full view of her oval-shaped stone and 18-karat-gold band.

While this is the first time we’ve seen the ring up close, we do know a few things about what went into the selection process.

“[Justin] had certain design elements that he wanted and he had certain expectations, and I think we delivered,” Jack Solow, of New York City–based Solow & Co. Inc. Diamond Jewelers, who designed the ring, previously revealed. “It was about the diamond. I think he knew very well what Baldwin wanted in a ring, but he wanted it very much to be about a very special diamond. He left it in my hands to try and select the most beautiful diamond for someone like Hailey.” The singer was also adamant that the ring have an 18-karat-gold band, which Solow speculated was important to Baldwin.

The design process reportedly involved a series of phone calls and back-and-forth photo exchanges. After only a few weeks, the custom piece of jewelry was ready for Bieber’s proposal. “Like any other young man, he said, ‘Wow, it’s gorgeous,'” Solow said. “There was one moment when he looked into the diamond and I said, ‘What do you see inside that diamond?’ He goes, ‘I think I see Hailey’s face,’ so that was kind of cute.”

Priyanka Chopra Just (Maybe) Debuted Her Engagement Ring


Priyanka Chopra‘s whirlwind romance to Nick Jonas reportedly led to an engagement at the end of July. Granted, they haven’t confirmed this news in any concrete way—instead, they just keep living their lives. Chopra’s been dancing at a bunch of Jonas’ concerts, and they’re still jet-setting around the world, as hot rich people do.

But it looks we might have received a confirmation that this engagement is the real deal. Actress Raveena Tandon uploaded two selfies of herself and Chopra to Instagram on Tuesday night (August 14), captioning them, “Peecee and I getting our pouts in order ! ?” In each, you can prominently see a sparkly diamond ring on Chopra’s ring finger, i.e., that finger.

To be fair, the post makes no mention of Chopra’s engagement, but the timing is suspicious, to say the least. I mean, come on: Tandon chooses to upload these photos of Chopra at the time when engagement rumors are flying around the Internet? This isn’t a Quantico mystery, people; the writing is pretty much on the wall.

Take a look at the photos for yourself, below. The comments, naturally, are flooded with debates about whether or not this is actually Chopra’s engagement ring.

The rock itself appears to be an east-west set cushion-cut with about four carats in it. (Of course, there could be no less than a zillion side stones on the ring, as well.) At first glance it looks like Chopra’s ring is set in platinum but her other gold jewelry indicates the ring band is actually yellow gold too.

So is this the engagement ring? Maybe! Probably! At the very least, it’s a sign Chopra’s aware of the rumors and trolling us all. (And at the most: A. Wedding. Is. Coming.)
