The Secrets Behind Blake Lively's Hair Transformations in The Rhythm Section

This story contains spoilers for The Rhythm Section. You’ve been warned.

When the trailer for Blake Lively‘s new movie, The Rhythm Section, first dropped I barely recognized her. I’ve spent almost 15 years since I first cried my way through The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants in complete fascination of Lively’s hair. Obviously, my admiration has only grown in the time since, through the Gossip Girl years and Lively’s continued big screen career and myriad red carpet appearances.

And yet, those famous long blond waves are distinctly missing from The Rhythm Section, along with her American accent. Instead, Lively sports a number of different looks in the film as her character, Stephanie Patrick, transforms herself from a tortured young woman to an undercover assassin seeking revenge. Yes, it’s quite the narrative, and one that required hair and makeup designer Siân Grigg to oversee an entire team dedicated to handling Lively’s wigs for the film. “She had so many different looks, and they were really important because you absolutely have to believe them,” Grigg says. “Otherwise, it blows her cover.”

Grigg and her team also knew that some of the wigs they chose were supposed to look somewhat fake, as if the character had bought them herself. “We still wanted them to look good, because she was obviously a smart girl and would not put something on her head that looked ridiculous,” she says. “But, also, we had to play that line that it’s a wig she’s bought in a shop.”

Here are the other secrets from set you should know.

Lively Was Very Involved in the Process—and She Wasn’t Vain About It

“Blake was super collaborative and really loves playing around with ideas,” Grigg says, which isn’t always the case when it comes to on-set hair and makeup. “She didn’t care if she looked terrible and didn’t mind how much time it took. She wanted to look absolutely right for the part.” She says the actor is one of those people who can pull off pretty much any color, which she does in the movie. “She’s just a lucky person like that—she’s quite a chameleon, so you can do a lot with her,” Griggs adds.

They luckily had a wig shop in Ireland (where some of the filming took place) that was willing to loan the production about 40 wigs to play with. “We tried so many different types—straight, curly, long, short,” Grigg says. “We had a lot to choose from.”

The First Look Was the Hardest to Nail

The character is in a really rough place in her life at the start of The Rhythm Section and that grounds her journey through the rest of the film. “You really had to believe that she’s completely given up on herself. She was almost like a non-human,” Grigg says. “She was just going through the motions, but she wasn’t really alive. She was just getting through it, really.”

Why Blake Lively's Been Wearing So Many Suits Lately: An Investigation

If you’re not following Blake Lively on Instagram, you’re missing out on a lot of A+ flirting between her and husband Ryan Reynolds—that, and some seriously impeccable suits. Lately, her feed has been filled with so many good ones, in fact, that we made a shopping gallery inspired by them. (Trust, it’s the ultimate compliment.)

Scroll through her recent posts, and you’ll see this plaid number…

… and a look she correctly dubbed “Boss. Baby.”

Outside of Instagram, Lively’s been photographed in even more strong suits, too. I like this one, which I call “Fashion Willy Wonka.”

My personal favorite, though, is this velvet-on-velvet-but-no-shirt situation.

Lively didn’t just wake up one morning and think, “I’ll give the Annie Hall look a try.” Rather, this is a coordinated effort to promote her new film, A Simple Favor, which premieres today.

In it, her character, Emily, plays a fashion publicist/fixer to a Marc Jacobs-esque designer. She wears a lot of suits. Behold.

While at a screening for the film—which, by the way, you should definitely go see if you like Henry Golding’s face (and who doesn’t?)—I noticed that Emily’s signature look felt familiar. Specifically, it reminded be of that of Paul Feig, the director of A Simple Favor, who is famous for wearing flawless, well-tailored suits. Surely, given his role in the project, he had some influence over the styling, if only to offer tailoring tips.

That theory was all but confirmed during New York Fashion Week, when Lively and Feig showed up to the Ralph Lauren‘s 50th Anniversary party and show wearing matching tuxes.

It turns out, there really is some truth to it: According to Renee Ehrlich, A Simple Favor‘s costume designer, Emily’s look in the film was mainly based on actresses from the Golden Age of Hollywood… with a little of Feig’s style thrown in: “There [were] wonderful mood boards I created looking at all the ’30s and ’40s actresses that wore men’s suiting. I’ve always personally loved men’s suiting and, you know, putting a suit on Blake is a very easy thing to do. It really evolved. We all simultaneously said, ‘Somebody should look just like Paul.’ I mean, look at him. Every day, he’s a dream.”

Lively had a hand in the creation of Emily and her wardrobe, too. During a red carpet interview at the film’s premiere, she said: “[Paul was] like, who do you want to look like? Who do you want to be? We’d be on set and I’d be like, ‘Is this too much?’ And he’s like, ‘Yes it is, let’s do it.’ I love that.”

Emily’s showstopper suits serve as a stark contrast to Stephanie, Anna Kendrick’s character, a mommy blogger who gravitates toward the kind of preppy sweaters and floral blouses you might find in an Anthropologie or J.Crew.

That was intentional, of course: “It was really interesting because it couldn’t have been two [more] different characters,” Ehrlich continues. “One was this powerhouse character who was, we really wanted to create a very iconic look, on somebody who absolutely didn’t care about fitting in. Opposed to Anna’s character who was really trying very, very hard to fit in.”

The takeaway? Despite being a decades-old trend, Le Smoking continues to be the go-to for women with something to say. I’ll see you at the tailor.

Blake Lively's 'A Simple Favor' Premiere Manicure Had a Hidden Message

The trailer for A Simple Favor is the best that martinis have looked since Mad Men. Starring Blake Lively and Anna Kendrick, the movie revolves around the very mysterious Emily (Lively), her unlikely friendship with Stephanie (Kendrick), and, going by the trailer, Emily’s deep devotion to drinking martinis and looking stylish. It seems like there’s a Gone Girl–type plot in there too, but from the movie’s promo materials, the martinis play a pretty significant role. And ever the supportive costar (and lover of a clever, hidden message ), Lively just showed up to New York’s A Simple Favor premiere with a tiny Swarovski crystal martini on her nails.

To create the miniature martini, Lively’s manicurist, celebrity nail artist Elle, says that she started by painting on two coats of LeChat Dare to Wear nail polish in Black Velvet ($6). She then topped the flat black color with a selection of Swarovski crystals (it wasn’t quite a J.Lo $100 mani situation, though—the jewels cost only $10). Elle says she was literally going to use magnifying glasses to help her create the martini, but they were lost at the last second, so she placed the crystals in three minutes with her naked eyes.

As for her inspiration, Elle says that after she saw martinis constantly popping up in the film’s press shots, she went for it. What’s more, “It doesn’t hurt that Ryan [Reynolds] just bought a gin company, which also plays a big part in the movie,” Elle says.

A tiny martini glass rendered in jewels may not be your definition of a subtle clue, but Elle says that there was actually more to the mani’s hidden message. She stuck to one martini accent nail on purpose: “This was all about her one special glass, which made it more symbolic of the movie. I won’t say too much more, or I’ll spoil the plot.” Interesting.

For the rest of her nails, Lively chose the gunmetal color of LeChat Dare to Wear polish in Rock the Mic ($7), since it uncannily matched the sheer, glittery black shirt she wore to the New York premiere. Elle says, “She’s been wearing suits as a nod to her character in the movie and for female empowerment as well. She’s standing up for there not being a difference for men and women—her suit was actually worn on the runway by a man.”

Blake Lively's Engagement Ring in *A Simple Favor* Was Inspired by Princess Diana's

If you’ve seen the trailer for Blake Lively and Anna Kendrick’s new film, A Simple Favor, you know that there’s a lot to take in—from power suits to figuring out what happened to Lively’s character, Emily. So you might have missed a surprising detail of Emily’s wardrobe: her engagement ring, which happens to look quite similar to a certain iconic royal’s.

In a new interview with People, Renée Ehrlich Kalfus, A Simple Favor‘s costume designer, revealed that Emily’s engagement ring is purposefully made to resemble royal jewels. “It’s a take on Princess Diana’s ring,” she said, referring to the vintage sapphire-and-diamond ring that was once worn by the Princess of Wales, and that Prince William later used to propose to Kate Middleton.

According to People, the ring serves as an “important plot point” in the film, and was once worn by Lively’s character’s mother-in-law—but we’ll just have to wait until the movie comes out on September 14 to find out more.

“I wanted to do something vintage, but the director [Paul Feig] thought it should be more on the nose,” Ehlrich added.

While you may be familiar with the recent history of Princess Diana’s ring, you may not realize that its story actually stretches far beyond the era of the “People’s Princess.” The inspiration for the piece actually goes all the way back to the 1840s, when Prince Albert had a sapphire-and-diamond broach designed for his soon-to-be wife, Queen Victoria. She loved it so much, she wore it as her “something blue” on her wedding day, and continued to wear it until her husband’s death in 1861. It was later passed along to Queen Elizabeth II, and it’s said that Prince Charles used the broach as inspiration when he was picking out the ring for Princess Diana.

While Lively’s real-life ring from husband Ryan Reynolds doesn’t have quite the same royal history as the inspiration for her onscreen one, it actually does have some surprising similarities: Like Princess Diana’s ring, the actress’s includes an oval central stone surrounded by diamonds, but instead of a 12-karat sapphire, it’s a seven-karat light pink diamond (and unlike Diana’s/Kate’s/Emily Nelson’s platinum band, Lively’s ring features a rose gold one.)

Blake Lively's Summer Outfit Features Two Velvet Blazers and No Shirt

The end of summer is still another month or so away, but Blake Lively is apparently ready for fall fashion.

The actress was photographed on Friday in New York—mid-August, where the temperature is a balmy 87 degrees—wearing a blue velvet pantsuit. But that’s not all: Rather than pop on a shirt underneath, Lively layered another velvet blazer on top, this one, by Brunello Cucinelli, in a rich red color. She finished off the outfit with a dark blue leather back, hoop earrings, and spiked nude heels by Christian Louboutin. It’s an outfit that would look perfectly at home on Serena van der Woodsen, or maybe Cate Blanchett’s character in Ocean’s 8.

Check it out.

You know this look is all Lively because the actress doesn’t use a stylist. In an interview with WWD from May, she joked: “Probably because I have control issues and a big ego—that’s probably the honest answer.

“I love design and I love fashion, and it’s a way to be creative,” Lively continued. “In my job I get to be creative, but it’s over a period of time and so many other people are involved, whereas this is a beginning, middle, and end, and I get to be creative and there’s an end date in the near future.”

“The hard part is going through all the fashion shows and screenshotting all the looks you like and calling them in,” she added to WWD. “I have an assistant who helps in calling in the looks. But a lot of it is I have relationships with the designers.” We’d love to see who the style inspo was for this look.

How she deals with the profuse sweating that comes with wearing velvet in August is still unclear, though.
