The 'Riverdale' Creator on the Black Hood Reveal, Bughead's Future, and Cheryl's New Love Interest

Tonight’s Riverdale more or less confirmed what Lili Reinhart told us back in December: The Black Hood is still on the loose. But with Chic Cooper’s arrival and all the Southside High drama, who’s got time to worry about that creep? There are plenty of other pressing issues in Riverdale—namely, why in Jason Blossom’s name hasn’t Cheryl been front and center in every episode this season?

Fortunately, creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa says we won’t have to wait much longer, as huge developments are about to take place. (Look out for episode 14, specifically.) What’s more, several forgotten characters might be on their way back to town. With so many questions—seriously, what is Chic Cooper doing in Betty’s bedroom?—Aguirre-Sacasa hopped on the phone from the Vancouver set to fill us in.

First, can you confirm the Black Hood is still out there?

Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa: Well, at the very end of tonight’s episode Archie says to Agent Adams, “Listen, if you’ve been following me, you know that I was involved [in trying to solve the mystery of] the Black Hood, but I gotta tell you, there’s a part of me that doesn’t think we got the right guy.” That is a thread that we will follow in the second half of the season.

Will viewers feel that they know for sure who it is by the end of the season?

RAS: However the Black Hood’s story continues, I believe it will have a definitive ending by the end of the season.

So, basically, whether it’s Svenson or not, we’ll definitely feel confident knowing who it was.

RAS: Exactly. Correct.

In tonight’s episode, Chic enters the picture and he’s…creepy. What can you say about his impending stay in Riverdale?

RAS: We kind of joke in the writer’s room—whenever we introduce someone, they have to be a force of darkness and chaos. On Riverdale, you can’t ever just introduce someone and have it be fine. It always comes with problems. Chic is no exception. We’re pretty cryptic about our plots; the writers know [that] the actors don’t know everything. So two or three episodes in, the fine actor that plays Chic—Hart Denton—calls me and asks, “Now, am I a good guy or a bad guy?” I started laughing and was like, “I think even if you think you’re a bad guy, you never think of yourself as a bad guy.” So, I’ll say this: In some ways, Chic is very different than from his sister Betty. I think what we’ll discover in upcoming episodes is that there are more similarities than you might originally think.

PHOTO: Shane Harvey/The CW

Will the Coopers regret letting Chic into their lives?

RAS: That’s a very good question. Like anything in Riverdale, there are going to be good things and bad things. In the end, I’m not sure. But I will say that we’ll find out next week what Chic was doing in Betty’s room, and we’ll start exploring the darker similarities between the two siblings, which I’m excited about.

Speaking of siblings, we find out that Polly gave birth to twins, Juniper and Dagwood, but she leaves town again before we even meet them. This can’t be the last we’ve seen of them.

RAS: Right. She did give birth, and you haven’t seen the last of Polly. And we haven’t even met the twins!

And should we assume that Betty, Polly, and Chic, all have the same mother and father in Hal and Alice Cooper?

RAS: I think that’s the assumption, yes.

Is it fact or assumption?

RAS: I think it’s an assumption and stay tuned.

Interesting. Meanwhile, switching topics, a few episodes ago it seemed as if Cheryl was stalking Josie, especially after she became very possessive over her. Madelaine Petsch said Cheryl would be getting an unexpected love interest this season, so it seems like Josie would be that person. But we haven’t had any new developments since. What can you say?

RAS: I promise you that storyline comes back huge. Hugely. That’s not something we’re dropping. It’s something we’re attacking head on. I think you’ve got maybe three or four episodes [until we come back to that].

The Lodge’s butler, Smithers, also seemed to have disappeared early on this season, and it seemed Hiram was behind it.

RAS: I love Smithers, and I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw him again. I remember at first, the network and studio were like, “Really? Smithers?” But I love that guy. We may not have heard the last of Smithers.

Let’s talk about romance on the show, especially as Valentine’s Day approaches. What can you share in terms of what’s to come whether you’re team Bughead, Barchie or Varchie?

RAS: All of our characters went through a harrowing ordeal in the first half of the season. Even though Bughead broke up, their feelings for each other are very much there—but they’ve got to sort through a bunch of stuff between them. In a weird way, they have to become friends again to see if it’s even possible to reconnect. The Bughead saga is far from over.

Chapter Twenty-One: House of the Devil

Meanwhile, I like Archie and Betty together. Don’t kill me, Bughead fans!

RAS: Interesting! Well, get ready and wait until episode 14 [which airs next month]. That’s all I’m saying!

Fair enough. And finally, I love the way Archie is being written this season in relation to Betty, Veronica, and Cheryl. He’s very close to all of the women. In tonight’s episode, for example, he was honest with Veronica about kissing Betty while they were broken up, and he’s extremely protective of the women after learning of Nick St. Clair’s attack. In the wake of the #MeToo movement, are you consciously trying to write Archie as a more feminist character?

RAS: As we were writing these episodes—even the episode that aired tonight—they were written before [the Time’s Up movement] started. It’s a fine line to balance because on the one hand, you don’t want the girls to be rescued by a guy. You want the girls to be able to fend for themselves and be strong. On the other hand, when we talked about Archie finding out that Nick had [tried to sexually assault] Cheryl and Veronica, when we were talking about that scene when Archie confronts Nick, even though his legs were in casts, we were like, “He’s gotta kick the shit out of this guy.” There’s gotta be a visceral response to being in a room with this guy, who is a serial harasser and perhaps even worse. That just felt like the most truthful thing, you know what I mean? The girls had already rallied around Cheryl, and it felt like if Archie just went up there and didn’t do something in response to Nick’s behavior, it would have been false to the character and a bit deflating.

We push the envelope on Riverdale in terms of sexuality and violence and things that are innate to the genre and pulp and noir. Since the last couple of months, we do talk about it more in the room. We’re trying to be a little more careful with what situations we put our characters in. But we are usually pretty aware, and we have been talking about it more. I think a lot of writers rooms have.

The Cast of 'This Is Us' Reveal What Happens Next After the Pearson Family's Intense Therapy Session

This Is Us rang in 2018 with quite the emotional episode—but would you expect anything less? (Read our recap here for a full breakdown.) For the actors, it was just as intense IRL. “I remember thinking, ‘Wow, these are really authentic moments,'” Justin Hartley tells us. “They’re talking about really hard things to people they love. They don’t want to hurt each other, but it’s going to hurt.”

One moment in particular—a 12-minute scene of Kevin’s family therapy session without a break in the action—is rarely done on television. “You can’t pick up that momentum [if you stop at any point when filming], so we just did take after take all the way through,” Hartley explains. “I don’t think anybody dropped a line.”

The scene—which prompted a devastated Rebecca to admit that Randall was an easier child to love than closed-off Kevin—also revealed that Kate’s addiction to food runs deeper than anyone was truly aware. “We all have struggles in our lives, and I think being honest with the people we love is the only way to face those issues,” Chris Sullivan says. “Being transparent and honest [with yourself and others is] really [the only way to] overcome something like that.”

Adds Hartley, “It’s a life-long struggle. It’s one moment at a time. It’s the same with Kevin. He knows the man he wants to be, but he just puts a lot of pressure on himself when he doesn’t need to.”

PHOTO: NBC

The episode ended on an uplifting note for the big three, but the hard work is just beginning. While it remains to be seen if Kevin has a future with ex-wife Sophie, Hartley played coy but noted that “you’ll be seeing her again.” Still, Sophie isn’t the only woman in Kevin’s life that he’ll need to work on repairing a relationship with. His sister-in-law Beth isn’t quite ready to forgive him after he unknowingly drove under the influence with her daughter in the backseat of his car. “There is going to be a tension there until [they really sit down to talk things out], Susan Kelechi Watson tells us. “It’s not like she hasn’t had tension with him before, but this was definitely a lot more serious. She’s definitely not as willing as Randall is [to take the stance that], ‘Oh, he’s getting help.’ She still feels like it’s all about Kevin in a way. There is going to have to be some kind of a stronger resolution for them.”

With only seven episodes remaining in season two, it remains to be seen if Beth and Kevin will have that opportunity, but one thing we do know is that the details about Jack’s death are closer to being revealed. “All I can say is be prepared,” Milo Ventimiglia says cryptically. “And yet, I know there is no real preparation for something like that. At the same time, we all know it’s coming. Just remember, it doesn’t mean the character is leaving or I’m leaving. It’s just one chapter in Jack’s book, and there’s a lot more to learn about the man.”

Speaking of Jack, Ventimiglia says that as vulnerable as we’ve seen the character this season, he actually has a tough time pulling back that emotion. “Jack is not one to cry, and I myself am more emotional than Jack. The hardest moments for me are where I personally have to hold my emotion in. When Jack opens up about his drinking problem [to Kate]…I’m welling up thinking about the experience, but thank God I have partners like [teen Kate] Hannah Zeile, [10-year-old Kate] Mackenzie Hancsicsak, and all the kids both ages. And Mandy, Mandy, Mandy…she’s a God send.”

Celebrities Reveal the Most Random Things They've Asked Their Assistants To Do

A celebrity’s job involves being in the public eye. We see them everywhere—on our screens, in magazines, on billboards. What we don’t see, though, is the behind the scenes work it takes to make it all happen: And for most, that involves a trusted assistant. Yes, these celebrities rely on their assistants to keep track of their hectic schedule and run errands—but for most, an assistant is more than just a paid helper who uploads pictures to their Instagram or stocks the fridge. They often become friends, confidants, and honorary therapists.

Still, you know these assistants get asked to do some pretty crazy stuff. In fact, one celebrity told us off the record that he has his assistant pick up his marijuana supply for him. Lucky for you, others were more forthcoming about their super random requests. Below, they tell all.

Uzo Aduba: “Since I’m a kid, I love this sandwich—turkey, lettuce, tomato, pickles, American cheese, extra mayo, not cold, nothing heated—and one night I had a hankering for it. Oh God, this is so embarrassing. It was maybe like 10 P.M., and my assistant doesn’t live close, or she wasn’t close [to my house], but I was like, ‘Do you mind maybe going to pick up this sandwich and bringing it to my house?’ And she’s like, ‘Now?’ And I’m like, ‘I mean, if it’s cool, if it’s on your way, whatever! But if it doesn’t work, don’t worry about it!’ And she brought it. I love you, Morgan!”

Ashley Graham: “So I was getting my stool sample tested, and I had to give my stool to my assistant, and she had to make all these errands holding my stool, and then had to do a delivery of my stool. She’ll do anything for me. People know what stool is, right?”

Niecy Nash: “I’m a beauty girl, so I’ve literally had to call my assistant and say, ‘Can you take my daughter’s braids out?’ They’re like, ‘There’s thousands of these tiny braids! That’s what we’re doing today?!’ I’m like, ‘Yes, it’s hair day!’”

Jenna Lyons: “I had my assistant boil an egg at home and bring it in for my salad. Because the place that I order my salad from wouldn’t put an egg on it. And it was my favorite place.”

Patrick Starr: “I asked them to build my Christmas tree and stack it on top of my patio table because I wanted a little more glam this year.”

Julia Michaels: “I had my last assistant plan a birthday party for me. But that entailed getting plastic balls for a ball pit, getting tons of balloons, a donut wall, etc.”

This Epic 'Riverdale' Theory Will Help You Understand That Confusing Black Hood Reveal

SPOILERS AHEAD!

Hello, and welcome to another edition of Riverdale Fan Theories, Particularly and Especially Those Having to Do With the Black Hood. During last week’s mid-season finale (see our recap, if you’re so inclined), we finally found out who it was. It was not Sheriff Keller. It was not Hiram Lodge. It was not Hal Cooper. It was also not Betty’s long-lost brother or Kevin or a mercenary for Archie’s mom, Mary Andrews, which pretty much leaves it to be a random character like a janitor. And, hey-oh, it turns out it was the janitor, Svenson. So that was disappointing—at first. Because as it turns out, it might not be him after all.

As some fans on Twitter pointed out, it is only the mid-season finale: Why would they expose the Black Hood and wrap a major plot line so early?

“There’s no way Svenson is the real Black Hood. My theory is, the REAL Black Hood wanted Svenson to die the same way his sin was made — by killing the wrong man,” proclaims user @iiClockworkii. “Also, this is only the mid season finale, it’s only halfway over. There’s no way.”

If you recall, Svenson was the sole survivor of the Riverdale Reaper murders. When a group of townspeople asked him who the Reaper was, he identified the wrong person—and that innocent guy was killed. It seems the same thing might be happening with Svenson. He was accused of being the Black Hood and was killed—but he might be innocent. Might be.

So next up is the excellent and very valid point raised by @mallorydui, who writes that the Black Hood is someone who wanted Svenson to experience what the innocent man whom Svenson wrongly blamed for a crime had to go through. Karma, y’all.

The “frame-Svenson” theory gained further ground on the Twitter as well…

…with some adding that Archie is the key to knowing who the Black Hood is—after all, he saw the Hood’s eyes the night his father was shot.

If these users are right—and in a show with this many twists and turns, we’re not putting a very weird fake-reveal behind the showrunners—fan theory season isn’t over yet. Which is great, because that’s kind of what we live for with this show.

This 'This Is Us' Fan Theory Might Just Reveal When We'll Find Out About Jack's Death

We’re halfway through the second season of This Is Us, and fans of the show still don’t know when or the details of how Jack Pearson died. Although viewers have learned some bits and bobs about the Pearson clan, there’s been very little new information revealed about Jack since we found out he likely perished in a fire in episode one (aside from the fact he once had a brother named Nicky).

Creator Dan Fogelman told Entertainment Weekly back in September that the fire in season 2 wasn’t a red herring. So we know that that, at least, is a sure thing. Now, a new fan theory from Redditor MaineSoxGuy93 suggests that Jack’s fate will be revealed to viewers on the real-life 20th anniversary of his death.

They wrote: “A thought just occurred to me. The Big 3 were born in 1980. They are now 37. Jack died in their senior year of high school. So that means Jack died somewhere between 1997-98. That means the twentieth anniversary of his death is coming up. We will find out how he died on the 20th anniversary of his death.”

MaineSoxGuy93 makes an intriguing case. We know for certain—thanks to episodes we’ve already seen—that Jack dies during Randall, Kate, and Kevin’s senior year of high school. The show is seasonally accurate, so when it comes back in early 2018 after its winter recess, the Pearson kids will likely be starting the second semester of their senior year.

Fogelman also revealed in the same September EW interview that we won’t have to wait until the last episode. “It’s fair to say you’re not going to learn everything about Jack’s death next week, but you’re not going to wait until the season finale, either,” he said. “It’ll be somewhere in between.”

It really is perfect timing for the writers, and it definitely gives MaineSoxGuy93’s theory some legs. The only thing to do now is mark our calendars for the show’s return on January 2.

Women Reveal One Thing They Want to See Happen on TV in 2018 at the Glamour x Tory Burch Women to Watch Lunch

Look at the 2017 Emmy nominations, and you’ll notice a common theme: It’s stacked with women-centric shows, especially ones with a message. With multiple nominations for the women behind and in front of the camera on shows like The Handmaid’s Tale, Big Little Lies, Feud, Veep, Grace and Frankie, This Is Us, and Orange Is the New Black, it’s clear we’re truly in a golden age of television.

That said, while we’ve certainly made progress, there’s still work to be done. A study released just this week revealed that 68 percent of the TV shows that aired between September 2016 to May 2017 had more men than women on their casts, and female characters accounted for just 42 percent of speaking roles. The good news: There are women in Hollywood, many of them nominated for Emmys this year, who are working hard to see those numbers change.

To celebrate them—and discuss how to make even more progress on television—Glamour partnered with Tory Burch to host a luncheon at the brand’s boutique on Rodeo Drive in Los Angeles. Along with our editor-in-chief, Cindi Leive, co-hosts for the event included Alison Brie, America Ferrera, Natalia Dyer, Priyanka Chopra, Samira Wiley, and Shonda Rhimes.

Before guests were served food from Phuong Tran of Croft Alley, Leive gave a Veuve Clicquot toast to the Emmy nominees in the room—which included Felicity Huffman, Samira Wiley, Reed Morano, Lena Waithe, Wanda Sykes, Laverne Cox, and Shannon Purser. “Most of all, I want to thank all of you for making shows that feature so many great female characters,” Leive said, before adding, “And women who get to actually do things!”

During the meal, the group discussed what they most want to see happen on TV next year. Master of None‘s Lena Waithe hopes to see “a black, lesbian lead character on a TV show. Hopefully, I’ll be the one writing it.” But her goals for 2018 don’t stop there: She also wants a series about a transgender person in love to show “more trans normalcy on television.”

Similarly, Laverne Cox’s wish for 2018 is to see more transgender representation—specifically, “a show starring a transgender woman created by a transgender person with transgender people writing.”

Like Waithe, Inhumans star Serinda Swan sees 2018 as a time to increase the diversity of stories being told—without treating the characters as an “other.” “I want to see more interesting, diverse characters, but I don’t want it to be something new anymore,” she explained. “In 2018, I want it to be commonplace, not [considered to be] pushing the boundaries. I just want to see the exceptional become normal and have everyone see that as well.”

Stranger Things and Riverdale star Shannon Purser agrees. “I would like to see more plus-size women as romantic interests because I don’t think we see enough of that,” she said. “I’d also like to see more mental health representation. I think it’s a very important issue and one that when it is talked about people are always so grateful to have that type of visibility. I would love to see somebody tackle that in a way that’s real and respectful.”

Stranger Things‘ Natalia Dyer and Shannon Purser

All the women gathered at the luncheon voiced their desire to see increased visibility. Or as Queen Sugar star Dawn-Lyen Gardner put it, “I think if I boiled it down to one thing, it would be that women-centric shows don’t just draw one demographic.”

“I always just want to see things that inspire unity on television,” The Walking Dead‘s Lauren Cohan explained. “The more I can see us finding connection and oneness, the more inspired I am to create more of the same.”

Speaking of inspiration, Stranger Things‘ Natalia Dyer had an inspired idea for her show’s third season. “We need more musicals on TV. A Stranger Things musical episode—let’s make it happen! I can carry a tune and learn the moves. I’ll put in the work.”

Sadly, once these conversations—and the amazing dessert—had wrapped, guests had to be on to their way (in style with Cadillac CT6 sedans)—but not before picking up a gift bag, which included a Tory Burch watch, a copy of the Glamour October issue, and Beautycounter lip gloss, mascara, and face oil. After that, it was on to the next Emmy event—and world domination, probably.
