Sarah Hyland Had the Perfect Response to This Troll Who Thought Birth Control Is Just for Sex


Sarah Hyland has never been afraid to serve up some righteous justice/logic on Twitter. Case in point, her spot-on response to paparazzi who were trying to get her to bash Modern Family co-star Ariel Winter. “y’all digging for something you’re never going to get,” Hyland tweeted as a response, adding in the laugh-cry emoji for a splash of extra defiance. Then, there was that time this summer when she burned Vice President Mike Pence after he touched a casual bit of space equipment at NASA that clearly had a “DO NOT TOUCH” sign in front of it (the capital letters were real). So when a Twitter troll showed up on her feed in support of President Trump‘s egregiously awful rollback on the Affordable Care Act’s birth control mandate, she was not about to let him get away with it.

It started on Friday, when Hyland tweeted some outrage about the stripped contraception protections into the Twitterverse:

Of course, those on both sides of the issue had plenty to say, but one fan in particular really got her goat. His tweet has since been deleted, for reasons that will shortly become clear. But Hyland’s response hammered home an important point: birth control is not just for women looking to prevent pregnancy when they have sex. It’s for women looking to control abnormal or irregular periods, endometriosis, and numerous other medical conditions that all relate to the lovely functions performed by cisgender women’s reproductive parts.

The ability to afford birth control—or, thanks to the Affordable Care Act, the guarantee that it will be free through insurance—is necessary for some women who experience chronic suffering when it comes time for their periods. The user who sent the tweets later said that he tweeted apologies twice (and maybe he’s shifted his perspective on the matter after a torrent of tweets directed at his misfire).

Unfortunately, however, the fact that birth control has important, critical purposes beyond preventing pregnancy is something that the men who still largely control women’s healthcare just don’t get.

Lena Dunham Penned a Powerful Response to the Explosive Harvey Weinstein Sexual Harassment Allegations


The New York Times‘ explosive report revealing decades of alleged sexual harassment by film producer-mogul Harvey Weinstein set the Internet—and general public—on fire Thursday. Women took to Twitter to share their own stories of sexual harassment, and public figures quickly acted to distance themselves from him after it broke—including numerous prominent Democratic politicians, who gave away Weinstein’s political contributions to charities. (If you haven’t read the Times investigation yet, grab yourself a cup of coffee and get to it.)

The day the story broke, Lena Dunham joined the many strong female voices on Twitter, voicing her support for the women coming forward with allegations against him. “The woman who chose to speak about their experience of harassment by Harvey Weinstein deserve our awe. It’s not fun or easy. It’s brave,” she wrote. The next day, she issued a powerful statement on Instagram, going a little deeper into her thoughts on the now-on-indefinite-leave producer’s behavior—and how very widespread the issue is in Hollywood.

“Yesterday an essential piece of reporting in The New York Times came out, detailing many years of sexual harassment by Harvey Weinstein toward a range of women,” she wrote. “Not only was the report horrifying, it made clear how hard it is to come forward and the complicity of so many. Unfortunately this is not an isolated incident. This needs to end, and it’s high time Hollywood shone a light on itself and made real changes in the behavior we accept from those in power. If you agree (and I think you do) I hope you’ll share the story. By lifting these women up, we change this age old story for them and for everyone.”

In the meantime, she has a suggestion for what Weinstein’s post-Times report course of action should have been:

Kim Kardashian's Response to Trump's Puerto Rico Tweets Is the Message He Needs to Hear


You know things are bad when Kim Kardashian tweets at the president with a poignant message we’d all like him to hear. To nobody’s surprise, President Trump took to Twitter this weekend to praise his handling of relief efforts in hurricane-ravaged Puerto Rico after the federal government’s response was severely criticized for essentially being too little, too late.

Amid a stream of tweets bolstering his own image and going after the media, Trump had a message for the people of Puerto Rico: “Do not believe the Fake News!” A rather thoughtless comment to make to 3.4 million people who don’t have electricity or water, not to mention cell service or internet access. As the rest of us face-palmed and shook our heads in frustration, fellow frequent tweeter (and fellow reality star) Kardashian shot off a response that actually has a chance of crossing the president’s radar.

“They don’t have power to watch the news!!! Please stop tweeting & golfing while people are dying! Please step up & help!” she wrote.

Nailed it. While the accuracy of the media coverage of the situation in Puerto Rico is important to those of us feeling helpless watching from afar, it’s likely not on the top of residents’ minds. Basic necessities like running water and electricity are still far from being restored for most of the island’s citizens.

And while it might be easy to turn the tables on Kim and say that her tweets aren’t really helping either, she and the rest of the Kardashians have donated their fair share in response to Hurricane Harvey, the earthquake in Mexico, and Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico.

Plus, Kim has encouraged her nearly 56 million followers to donate—and they have.

Given that Twitter has been Kim’s outlet of choice to comment on rumors surrounding the surge of baby news in her family, we’ve been paying close attention to her feed. And this clapback isn’t all that different from her others—it just happens to be pointed directly at the president of the United States. And when Kim Kardashian is pleading with Trump to quit tweeting about nonsense and do something helpful, you know things are bad. But we hope he listens.

'SNL' Tore Into Donald Trump Over Puerto Rico Response

Saturday Night Live kicked off its 43rd season last night and—as usual—the writers had enough real-life material to draw from. The Emmy-winning Alec Baldwin was back as the President in the series’ cold open, and the show tried to highlight as many ridiculous Trump moments as possible since the last season ended in May. The most recent: his deplorable approach to hurricane disaster relief in Puerto Rico.

In the first few minutes of the sketch, Baldwin speaks with Puerto Rico’s mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz, played by Melissa Villasenor, on the phone. While he arrogantly thinks she’s going to tell him “what a great job I’m doing,” she instead begs him for more disaster funding after the island was left without power and ravaged by Hurricane Maria.

“We want to help you, but we have to take care of America first,” Baldwin as Trump said. To which Villasenor replied, “You do know we’re a US territory, don’t you?” Baldwin’s jaw drops, he promptly hangs up, and says, “that woman was so nasty.”

Baldwin’s words, in the video below, were inspired by real-life recent Trump tweets; Cruz begged Trump to “take charge and save lives.” But Trump, both IRL and played by Baldwin, totally dismissed her cry for help. Instead, he Trump accused her of being a poor leader in a series of September 30 tweets.

Baldwin as Trump also touched on the recent NFL national anthem protests, his threats against North Korea and Kim Jung Un aka “Rocket Man”, and his tumultuous relationships with Congressman Chuck Schumer and Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

Given how political this season premiere was, it’s safe to say season 43 is going to be chock full of Trump moments like this one.

Ellen DeGeneres Had the Perfect Response to Why She'd Never Have Trump on Her Show


Ellen DeGeneres has no love lost for President Donald Trump, it’s safe to say. DeGeneres was one among many celebrities who tweeted words of support after Clinton’s loss. “Thank you @HillaryClinton for your speech and for your endless bravery. We are stronger together,” she wrote. In January, she alluded to not supporting Trump when he screened Finding Dory at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue: “Over the weekend, on Friday, the president gave an order banning people from seven countries from entering the United States, including people with green cards,” she said on her show. “And then on Saturday, the president screened Finding Dory at the White House. I don’t get political, but I will say that I am against one of those two things.”

By May, the comedian, who, as Vanity Fair pointed out, is known for “keeping things light,” made it clear that Trump wouldn’t be invited on her show. Matt Lauer got to her admit she hadn’t spoken with Trump—whom she’d encountered when filming something briefly for her show during season one of Celebrity Apprentice—since he began running for president. Lauer asked her why he’d never be on her show and she responded, “Because I’m not going to change his mind,” adding that the president is “against everything that I stand for.”

“We need to look at someone else who looks different than us and believes in something that we don’t believe in and still accept them, and still let them have their rights,” she added.

She reiterated her position when she spoke with another journalist, Megyn Kelly, on The Ellen DeGeneres Show last week. DeGegeneres asked Kelly if she’d had him on her upcoming Today With Megyn Kelly, who said of course—he’s a sitting president of the United States. Kelly flipped the question back to DeGeneres, who had the perfect response:

“I would not have him on my show,” she said as the audience applauded. “He is who he is and he has enough attention. He has his Twitter account and he has ways to get his message across.” She then reiterated something she’d told Lauer, before adding a crucial part: “There is nothing I’m going to say to him that’s going to change him, and I don’t want to give him a platform, because it validates him.”

DeGeneres continued:

“For me to have someone on the show, I have to at least admire them in some way. And I can’t have someone that I feel is not only dangerous for the country—and for me personally as a gay woman—but to the world. He’s dividing all of us…I just don’t want him on the show.”

Lucy Hale Had an Amazing Response to This Body-Shaming Troll


Ah, Twitter: the one thing you can always count on—besides President Donald Trump using the platform as his own communications department—is trolls. So many trolls. They comment with spite and hostility on everything from politics to the weather to celebrity bodies. That last one, in particular, happens a lot—and this time, a Twitter user came for Lucy Hale with an unsolicited opinion about her body. Luckily, the Pretty Little Liars actress had the perfect response to put him in his place.

It should be apparent by now, in a culture where body positivity is on the rise, but body-shaming isn’t just about one end of the scale: some women deal with comments telling them they should eat more and “put some meat on those bones.” Either way, body-shaming can be triggering for someone who’s dealt with disordered eating—as is the case with Hale. In 2012, she talked about struggling with an eating disorder and body image issues, and she continues to fight her insecurities: take, for example, a picture of her and her dad she posted in June, where she called herself “fat” in the comments section. Hey, we all have insecurities—but it’s not for others to police our bodies and make them worse. (“Sometimes we can be our own worst enemy,” Hale later responded when the inevitable backlash hit.)

So: on Friday, Hale posted this pic of her with a quote from Poltergeist.

And then TEDDY FORTE (his caps, not ours) came along:

Hale, however, was quick to shut him down:

After he responded with a sarcastic “Neat,” followed by a thumbs-up emoji and related GIF—you know, because human empathy wasn’t an option for him—she came back with a snappier see-ya:

TEDDY FORTE then started bullying another user who had come to Hale’s defense (“Got no come back so you send a gif,” he replied to FORTE’s comment), and Hale encouraged him to block the troll for good:

Twitter users also spoke out against TEDDY FORTE, and made some very valid points—including the reminder that you’re not obligated to look a certain way in order to please someone.

Importantly, Hale’s response also empowered other Twitter users.

Don’t let the bastards grind you down, Hale.
