Your Pregnancy App May Be Selling Your Data—To Your Boss

Tracking health data has gotten intimate. Thanks to the booming femtech industry, there are now dozens of fertility and pregnancy apps like Ovia, which give moms-to-be an easy way to input daily health updates during their pregnancy journeys. The apps, designed in colors like purple and blue, create a fun and welcoming environment to track women’s most personal data—sexual activity, menstrual cycles, fertility, pregnancy symptoms and dates for delivery, even pregnancy loss—in a free, user friendly mobile app. The idea that these apps might be selling your data isn’t new. But what if your data wasn’t going to some third party advertiser but rather someone much closer to you—like your boss.

Earlier this week, the Washington Post, reported Ovia Health, the parent company behind apps for fertility, pregnancy and parenting, is selling users’ data to their employers. The Post spoke with Diana Diller, a 39-year old Los Angeles-based event planner, who was using Ovia during her pregnancy to log daily activity such as bodily functions and sex drive. Her employer, Activision Blizzard, a video game company, was following along.

Activation Blizzard is part of a program offered by Ovia Health where employers can pay to offer employees a special version of the app as an employee benefit. The catch? The company gains access to the aggregated, anonymized data shared by its employees. Milt Ezzard, vice president of global benefits for Activision Blizzard, told the Post offering “pregnancy programs such as Ovia help the company keep skilled women.” But experts worry employers could use the information to increase or decrease health coverage depending on what they see in the data. There’s also the fear that companies could use incredibly intimate details like whether or not a woman was having premature birth or suffering a miscarriage, in order to make business decisions. “The health information is sensitive but could also play a critical role in boosting women’s well-being and companies’ bottom lines,” Paris Wallace, chief executive of Ovia Health told the Post, pointing to rising rates of premature birth and maternal death as the reasons why they want to sell this information to employers.

“It feels like a very big breach of privacy, it makes me feel uncomfortable, and it feels like this company has preyed on women who are in the most exciting and vulnerable time of their life,” says Brianna Bell, 29, a writer based in Guelph, Ontario. Bell used Ovia’s pregnancy and parenting apps for 18 months without knowing the company could sell her information. (Ovia’s consumer apps—the free to download Ovia Fertility, Ovia Pregnancy and Ovia Parenting—“do not share any data with employers,” a representative of the company said in a statement provided to Glamour. But the apps’ terms of service do state that by agreeing to use the product users grant Ovia the right to “utilize and exploit” their anonymous personal data for research, marketing purposes, or sale to other third parties.)

The idea of your data—even if it has been stripped of your name—floating around out there for use is unsettling. But is there really anything to worry about? Users need to opt in to Ovia’s employer programs like the one offered by Activation Blizzard, according to the company, and of course, you can always choose not to input certain data. “An employer then only receives population level data once a certain threshold of users has been reached,” Ovia told Glamour, adding that they only work with large companies to reduce the risk of a specific pregnant woman being identified in the office. “We are not reporting personal, intimate information like cycle data or pregnancy symptoms to employers,” the company says.

Amy Schumer’s Growing Review: Her New Netflix Special Is the Realest Take on Pregnancy Yet

By all accounts, Amy Schumer has not had an easy pregnancy. The comedian has a condition called hyperemesis gravidarum, often referred to as “extreme morning sickness,” that caused her to cancel much of her tour. She gets brutally real about this—and other aspects of her pregnancy—in her new Netflix special, Growing, out now. At one point in the special, Schumer compares hyperemesis to “having food poisoning every day for the last five months.” “I throw up an Exorcist amount every day,” she jokes, before revealing she was once hospitalized after vomiting for five hours straight. This is all to say that if anyone deserves a little special treatment during their pregnancy, it’s Schumer.

But one of the strongest parts of Growing is the way Schumer takes on society’s impulse to treat pregnant people in a precious way—like they’re angelic, wholesome, cutesy parodies of women. As if we’re all having a magical time gestating a human. “I didn’t know that being pregnant could be really hard,” she says. “You bitches all lie about it.”

She attacks the pregnant-woman trope seen in romantic comedies: a lady throws up—once!—in her office, realizes she’s expecting, and is suddenly wearing overalls, painting, and cupping her bump in the next scene. The implication here: Even if you’re not an overall-wearing, crafty, lovey-dovey person, pregnancy will turn you into one. But “you’re still you,” Schumer says, pointedly.

Netflix

This resonated loudly with me as a new mom. I didn’t spontaneously turn into a cartoon mother once I got knocked up. Once I revealed I was pregnant, it felt like the baby was all anyone wanted to talk about—even if I didn’t want to talk about it. Yes, to a degree this was a preview of what motherhood is like, but Schumer’s material is a reminder that our own existences shouldn’t take a backseat. Women are still important, relevant, and interesting outside of their pregnancies.

Schumer skewers this by revealing that she greets the myriad of “What are you having?” questions she fields every day with a despondent “hemorrhoids.” She screams “cock!” when asked, “What are you craving?” “Just me and my angel,” she says in a saccharine voice after telling this anecdote, caressing her bump, almost daring the audience to admit they were expecting her to be somehow softer or sweeter as a pregnant woman. Nope. She’s still her.

When I was pregnant, I often joked I had something called “pregnancy rage.” Instead of, say, weeping at car insurance commercials (another pregnancy trope), I felt mad a lot, particularly about the way pregnant women are infantilized by the exact stereotypes Schumer brings up. I can’t definitively say Schumer has pregnancy rage too, but she certainly felt like my kindred spirit as I watched Growing. She hates the way pregnant women always cup their bumps in photos—“it’s so obnoxious”—and doesn’t understand why people think she’s a hero for just showing up to work. “I’m contractually obligated to be out here, guys,” she says. “I’m not like, ‘The show must go on.’ I’m like, ‘I will be sued.'” She hates women who say they enjoyed their pregnancies. She hates when people ask to see her bump, so much that she hikes her dress up at the beginning of the special and flashes it to the audience. A bump middle finger, if you will.

To be fair, pregnancy is giving Schumer a lot to hate. But even as someone who had a relatively easy and uncomplicated pregnancy, I felt so seen by her derision. Pregnancy is more present in comedy than ever before—just see Ali Wong’s two specials—but what’s particularly satisfying about watching Amy Schumer is right there in the title: She’s growing, but she’s still her. And it’s cathartic to watch.

Lady Gaga Just Hit Back at Pregnancy Rumors With an Even Bigger Announcement

The Lady Gaga-Bradley Cooper rumors just won’t die, and this latest one really takes the cake. A tabloid published a report this week claiming the Joanne singer is pregnant but doesn’t know if her A Star Is Born co-star or her ex-fiancé, Christian Carino, is the father. Of course, this isn’t true—but just in case you’re skeptical, Gaga took to Twitter to shut it down. And she dropped an even bigger surprise in its place.

“Rumors I’m pregnant? Yeah, I’m pregnant with #LG6,” Gaga tweeted Tuesday night, March 12. That’s right, people: Lady Gaga isn’t pregnant, but she does officially have an album on the way.

Here’s the thing: Gaga has said in the past she’s working on a new record, but her dubbing it #LG6 on Twitter suggests it’s nearing completion and a release. Fans have been waiting for this moment for a while now, and the reactions online prove it.

Below, check out Gaga’s tweet:

And her fan reactions:

We don’t have an album release date right now, but fans can expect it to drop this year—maybe even in a matter of months. Awards season is over, and Gaga has a long stretch of time before her next Enigma Vegas show on May 30. It seems like the perfect opportunity to tackle a big project…like her sixth studio album.

It’s hard to venture where Gaga will go music-wise. After all, the acoustic-inspired Joanne from 2016 came out of left field. But the neon-tinged vibe of her Enigma show, not to mention her glam-pop rendition of “Shallow” at the Grammys, suggest she’ll return to her electronic roots. Over the summer, the cutting-edge DJ Sophie revealed she worked with Gaga on new music, which adds fuel to this fire too. As a Gaga diehard, I’m fully on board with this. No one makes pop music like Lady Gaga, and the world could use some “Just Dance” magic right about now.

Prince Harry Is Already Making Dad Jokes About Meghan Markle’s Pregnancy

Meghan Markle hasn’t even given birth yet, but Prince Harry is already making dad jokes. His latest one happened on the couple’s current trip to Morocco. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were visiting a school in the town of Asni when someone congratulated Markle on her pregnancy. Prince Harry quickly swooped in with some dad humor. “What, you’re pregnant?” he said, pretending to be shocked at what the well-wisher said.

Markle played along, quipping, “Surprise!” as she held back her laughter. And that’s when Prince Harry jumped in with the ultimate corny joke: “Is it mine?” he said.

It’s official: Prince Harry is going to be one of those dads, the ones who wear chunky white sneakers, fanny packs, and Hawaiian T-shirts to Disney World. On Halloween, he’ll put on a costume to bring his child to school—even when they’re 16. And he’ll have plenty more jokes where this one came from.

Watch Prince Harry and Markle have this exchange for yourself, below:

Meghan Markle has been having quite the exciting month. Just last week she had her baby shower in New York City, which several of her famous friends, including Gayle King, Serena Williams, and Amal Clooney, attended. “She’s very kind. She’s very generous and a really, really sweet person. I think her friends just wanted to celebrate her,” King said about the shower. “A good time was had by all.”

Now she and Prince Harry are in Morocco, where she received a henna tattoo to celebrate her baby. “It’s for when we have a big party. Now she is pregnant we do the henna to keep her happy with the baby,” Khadeja Oukattou, an Education for All housemother, told People about the ink. “For good luck.”

Markle is reportedly due in late April-slash-early May. Let the royal baby countdown begin.

Meghan Markle Got a Henna Tattoo to Celebrate Her Pregnancy

After touching down in Casablanca in serious style last night for their royal visit to Morocco, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry had a busy second day in the Atlas Mountains.

The couple spent the majority of their morning visiting with young women at Education for All, a national organization that builds and runs boarding houses for girls from ages 12 to 18, according to its website. Students staying in the EFA boarding house lined its entrance and performed a welcoming ceremony for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex as they arrived.

Once inside, Markle—who was wearing a navy Alice + Olivia navy blazer, skinny jeans, and her favorite Birdies black flats—got a henna tattoo on her left hand and wrist. “It’s for when we have a big party. Now she is pregnant we do the henna to keep her happy with the baby,” Khadeja Oukattou, an EFA housemother, told People of the design. “For good luck.”

She added that the girls were very excited about Markle’s pregnancy. “They wished them a good life and good health for them and the baby.”

Here’s a closer look at the beautiful design:

The henna tattoo, which was applied by one of the students, 17-year-old Samira Ouaadi, is traditionally given to pregnant women in their third trimester in countries like Morocco to protect mother and child from evil spirits. Markle’s sister-in-law Kate Middleton also got a henna design on a visit to Sunderland, England, when she was about seven months pregnant with Prince Louis last February.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry finished their time at the boarding house with a tour of the facilities, during which the duchess spoke to the girls in excellent French, according to royal expert Richard Palmer.

Kensington Palace announced Markle’s pregnancy last October. Her baby is due sometime this spring.

Amy Schumer Cancels Tour Due To Pregnancy Complications: 'It Sucks'

Amy Schumer has never been afraid to get candid, so it’s no surprise that she’s being honest about her pregnancy struggles too. In an Instagram post this weekend, the comedian announced that she’s canceling the remainder of her stand-up tour to focus on her health after dealing with complications with hyperemesis gravidarum, a condition that causes severe nausea and vomiting in pregnancies.

“Due to complications from hyperemesis I am not cleared to fly for the next couple weeks,” she wrote in her post. “I am going to cancel the remainder of my tour. Refunds are available at point of purchase.”

“The baby and I are healthy and everything looks good. But I am in my third trimester and I am still nauseous all the time and vomiting,” she continued. “I vomit mostly every time I ride in a car even for five minutes. I have a pretty good attitude about it and some days I feel good for a couple of hours. But mostly it sucks.”

Schumer added that she was disappointed this meant canceling the tour. “I wanted to push through and do my shows. Because I hate letting people down and I love stand up and money! But more than that I have to think about my health and the baby. I know you guys get it and people are like. Bitch are you ok? Take it easy but it’s still embarrassing to have to cancel.”

Schumer announced that she and her husband, chef Chris Fischer, were expecting their first child back in October. She, of course, broke the news in a hilarious way, posting a photo of her and Fischer’s heads photoshopped over Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s bodies (Markle’s pregnancy news had surfaced just a few days before). She’s kept the Markle humor coming, cracking that she’s excited about “competing with [Meghan] Markle every step of the way.”

Still, she’s since paused the jokes to address just how she’s been feeling and how hard it’s been. While nausea and morning sickness are common in early trimesters, hyperemesis gravidarum can last for some women throughout the duration of a pregnancy. Given the symptoms, it’s pretty understandable why Schumer would want a break from so much traveling.

Fans responded with messages of support, encouraging Schumer to take time for herself and the baby. “HG is the worst mama. Hang in there and take care of yourself! You are almost to the end!” one person reminded her. “A momma’s gotta do, what a momma’s gotta do. Hope you’re feeling better ASAP,” another wrote.
