Amy Schumer Legally Changed Her Son's Name for a Very Good Reason

Amy Schumer and her husband, Chris Fischer, welcomed their first son together last May and named the little guy Gene Attell Fischer. His middle name was meant to be a sweet tribute to the couple’s good friend, fellow comedian Dave Attell. However, Schumer revealed on the most recent episode of her podcast 3 Girls, 1 Keith that they have actually changed Gene’s middle name.

“So do you guys know that Gene, our baby’s name, is officially changed? It’s now Gene David Fischer,” she said. “It was Gene Attell Fischer, but we realized that we, by accident, named our son ‘genital.’ Gene Attell sounds like genital.” Um, that’s hilarious and, honestly, we’d never noticed it. either. Schumer’s guest on the episode was her costar from Trainwreck, Claudia O’Doherty, who said her own mother did remark on the name. “My mom pointed that out to me, actually,” O’Doherty said. “My mum was like, ‘Amy’s called her son genital.'”

The comedian said they decided to legally change Gene’s middle name to David because it still honors Attell and is also her own father’s middle name. Hopefully, little Gene will one day appreciate the fact his parents made this change early enough in his life that he won’t be teased about it.

Amy Schumer has openly shared that she and her husband are trying to give Gene a younger brother or sister with the help of IVF treatments. “I’m a week into IVF and feeling really run down and emotional,” she wrote on Instagram. “If anyone went through it and if you have any advice or wouldn’t mind sharing your experience with me please do. My number is in my bio. We are freezing my eggs and figuring out what to do to give Gene a sibling. ❤️”

Fingers crossed their treatments are successful—and that they get the name right on the first go.

Amy Schumer Revealed She’s Going Through IVF Treatments

Comedian Amy Schumer has always been one to share what’s on her mind—in her stand-up sets, in interviews, and on her own social media feeds. That has become especially true since she got pregnant with and gave birth to her first child with husband Chris Fischer, Gene, who’s now eight months old.

This week Schumer revealed that she is going through IVF (in vitro fertilization) treatments in order to have a second child—and asking fans for advice in dealing with the grueling process.

“I’m a week into IVF and feeling really run down and emotional,” she wrote in a caption next to a photo of her bruised belly. “If anyone went through it and if you have any advice or wouldn’t mind sharing your experience with me please do. My number is in my bio. We are freezing my eggs and figuring out what to do to give Gene a sibling. ❤️” And there is indeed a phone number in the bio (+1 (917) 970-9333) for anyone who wants to reach out.

The comments section was filled with supportive comments from fellow celebs like Katie Couric who wrote, “You got this mama❤️❤️ Sending you lots of love ! ?” and Selena Gomez who said, “I’m praying for you and chris. I’m sorry!”

Other people shared their own personal experiences like one woman who wrote, “Ugh. I did 7 rounds to get my b/g twins. It was such an emotional roller coaster. I remember the bruises like you have and feeling like a giant bloated pin cushion. Thank you for normalizing and bringing this topic out into the open.”

During her pregnancy, Schumer suffered from hyperemesis gravidarum—which is like an extreme form of morning sickness—and wasn’t afraid to show its effects on her body and life. Including daily bouts of vomiting. (Kate Middleton also had the same condition when pregnant with Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis.) And after giving birth, Schumer didn’t stop bringing her characteristic humor to the struggles of mom life.

The emotional and physical toll IVF takes is only made worse by a culture of silence. For women dealing with fertility issues, it’s amazing to see women like Schumer opening up the conversation.

UPDATE: January 11, 3:13 p.m.: Amy Schumer provided an update about her IVF process to her followers, explaining that she and her husband have decided to freeze their embryos.

The comedian also shared some of the tips she received from fans who have undergone IVF, listing things like eating salty foods, drinking Gatorade, icing the area, and, most importantly, being “patient and kind” to yourself.

“There are sooooo many of us willing to be there for each other,” Schumer penned in the caption. “Your stories helped me more than you can imagine. I feel incredibly lucky. I’m really hoping this works and staying positive. Much much love!”

Amy Schumer Cancels Tour Due To Pregnancy Complications: 'It Sucks'

Amy Schumer has never been afraid to get candid, so it’s no surprise that she’s being honest about her pregnancy struggles too. In an Instagram post this weekend, the comedian announced that she’s canceling the remainder of her stand-up tour to focus on her health after dealing with complications with hyperemesis gravidarum, a condition that causes severe nausea and vomiting in pregnancies.

“Due to complications from hyperemesis I am not cleared to fly for the next couple weeks,” she wrote in her post. “I am going to cancel the remainder of my tour. Refunds are available at point of purchase.”

“The baby and I are healthy and everything looks good. But I am in my third trimester and I am still nauseous all the time and vomiting,” she continued. “I vomit mostly every time I ride in a car even for five minutes. I have a pretty good attitude about it and some days I feel good for a couple of hours. But mostly it sucks.”

Schumer added that she was disappointed this meant canceling the tour. “I wanted to push through and do my shows. Because I hate letting people down and I love stand up and money! But more than that I have to think about my health and the baby. I know you guys get it and people are like. Bitch are you ok? Take it easy but it’s still embarrassing to have to cancel.”

Schumer announced that she and her husband, chef Chris Fischer, were expecting their first child back in October. She, of course, broke the news in a hilarious way, posting a photo of her and Fischer’s heads photoshopped over Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s bodies (Markle’s pregnancy news had surfaced just a few days before). She’s kept the Markle humor coming, cracking that she’s excited about “competing with [Meghan] Markle every step of the way.”

Still, she’s since paused the jokes to address just how she’s been feeling and how hard it’s been. While nausea and morning sickness are common in early trimesters, hyperemesis gravidarum can last for some women throughout the duration of a pregnancy. Given the symptoms, it’s pretty understandable why Schumer would want a break from so much traveling.

Fans responded with messages of support, encouraging Schumer to take time for herself and the baby. “HG is the worst mama. Hang in there and take care of yourself! You are almost to the end!” one person reminded her. “A momma’s gotta do, what a momma’s gotta do. Hope you’re feeling better ASAP,” another wrote.

Amy Schumer Is Pregnant With Her First Child

A baby is on the way for Amy Schumer and her husband, chef Chris Fischer. The comedian confirmed she’s pregnant on Monday (October 22) via her friend Jessica Yellin’s Instagram Story.

Here’s exactly how she broke the news: Late Monday afternoon, Schumer posted a meme to Instagram of her and Fischer’s heads Photoshopped over Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s bodies and captioned it, “About to announce some exciting news on @jessicayellin insta page. Please follow her for up to the minute #newsnotnoise she breaks down what’s really going on. She agreed to post a lil noise today for me! Follow her and VOTE!!” The photo featured Markle (who recently announced she’s pregnant) holding her stomach, which tipped fans off to what Schumer might’ve been announcing.

Yellin, a journalist who founded the media platform News Not Noise—aimed at helping readers cut through the clutter of 2018’s news cycle—opened up her Instagram Story with a shout-out to Schumer. “I wanted to share some news from our community, maybe it’s noise but it’s happy noise,” Yellin said. “So I’m not in the business of making voting recommendations, but these are the recommendations of Amy Schumer, one of the most consistent and earliest supporters of News Not Noise. Now read all the way to the bottom, you’ll see there’s some news down there. Congratulations, Amy.”

The next slide on Yellin’s IG Story shows Schumer’s list of congressional and gubernatorial recs, and at the bottom is just four words: “I’m pregnant – Amy Schumer.”

Amy Schumer Is the Latest Celeb to Boycott the Super Bowl

Amy Schumer isn’t afraid to get political—she’s just back from getting detained at the Kavanaugh protests, and has long advocated for women’s rights and gun control (she’s also cousin to Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, who’s also big on gun control). Now, following in the footsteps of Rihanna, who turned down an invite to perform at the Super Bowl, Schumer’s also stated that she’ll turn down doing any commercial that will air during the Super Bowl.

Ri-Ri was reportedly offered the halftime entertainer slot but turned it down to show support for Colin Kaepernick, who kneeled during the anthem to quietly (and peacefully) protest police brutality against the black community. He’s now filing a collusion grievance against the NFL, which he believes has conspired to keep him off the field due to his protests.

On Friday, Schumer posted a photo of herself to Instagram holding a very large wine glass, because, presumably, politics in 2018 can be exhausting. She added an eloquent caption that explained her reasoning for telling her team she wouldn’t be doing commercials for the Super Bowl,

“Friday thought. I wonder why more white players aren’t kneeling. Once you witness the truly deep inequality and endless racism people of color face in our country, not to mention the police brutality and murders. Why not kneel next to your brothers? Otherwise how are you not complicit? I think it would be cool if @maroon5 backed out of super bowl like @badgalriri Did. I personally told my reps I wouldn’t do a Super Bowl commercial this year. I know it must sound like a privilege ass sacrifice but it’s all i got. Hitting the nfl with the advertisers is the only way to really hurt them,” she wrote.

“I know opposing the nfl is like opposing the nra. Very tough, but don’t you want to be proud of how you’re living? Stand up for your brothers and sisters of color. And the hottest thing a guy can do is get down on one knee. Not to propose but to reject the treatment of his teammates by this country. Anyone who says its disrespectful to our military please read up on the fact that a lot of veterans are proud of what @kaepernick7 is doing and fully support him. What are your thoughts?”

Time will tell if other celebrities join the boycott—or if Maroon 5, the band that is still around, pulls out of the halftime performance.
