The Downton Abbey Movie Is Officially Filming, and the Cast Can't Stop Celebrating


Fans who were devastated about Downton Abbey ending received a shining beacon of hope over the summer when news broke a movie adaption of the hit series is happening. Not much is known about the plot at this time, but so many of your favorites from the original series are returning, including Michelle Dockery, Hugh Bonneville, Maggie Smith, and Joanne Froggatt (according to Entertainment Weekly). If that’s not enough to get you pumped, though, then these new Instagram posts from the cast celebrating the first day back shooting will definitely do the trick.

It all kicked off with Michelle Dockery (Lady Mary Crawley), who took to the social media site on Monday and wrote, “And…we’re off ?@downtonabbey_official.” She accompanied her caption with a black-and-white snap of a shot being set up behind-the-scenes. Check it out for yourself, below:

Allen Leech (Tom Branson) then posted a photo of himself and cast-mates Hugh Bonneville (Robert Crawley) and Michael C. Fox (Andrew Parker) playing golf in between rehearsals for the film. Listen, sometimes drinking beer and playing sports helps you get into character for period dramas!

Bonneville actually skipped the first day of filming to see Elizabeth McGovern (Cora Crawley) in a play she’s starring in right now. Who says you can’t work and play at the same time?

“Was so lovely to be sat next to some of these beauties again today while we were having make up tests. So excited to start filming,” Joanne Froggatt (Anna Bates) posted to Instagram alongside a photo of several women from Downton Abbey a few days before filming kicked off.

To say this cast is obsessed with each other is an understatement. We’ll post more photos from the cast filming as they come in.

'Crazy Rich Asians' Is Officially Opening-Weekend Box Office Gold


For months, the hype surrounding the film adaptation of Kevin Kwan’s hit 2013 book Crazy Rich Asians has been mounting—and this weekend, the film proved it was worthy of it all (and then some).

The film, which officially hit theaters in the U.S. on Friday, has been receiving a surplus of positive acclaim from both audiences and critics alike. Thanks to the movie’s cast of actors, who are all of East Asian descent—the first such cast in far too long—and aesthetically staggering sets (not to mention the incredible clothes), Hollywood’s standard rom-com formula got what seems to be a much-needed changeup.

Directed by Jon M. Chu, Crazy Rich Asians has already pulled in $16 million in two days, and is estimated to reach a whopping $22 million by the close of opening weekend, according to Variety. Within five days, the film is projected to accrue more than $30 million, according to The Hollywood Reporter. It’s a notably strong opening for a romantic comedy in an era where comedies have been experiencing a box office slump. Unsurprisingly, the film currently boasts a Certified Fresh score of 92 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.

Taking to Instagram, the film’s star, Constance Wu, immediately showed her excitement after learning how well the film was being received. “#crazyrichasians is certified fresh…. and I can’t believe we’re playing in the DOME! Amazing. Thank you everyone for all your love and support.”

But Wu wasn’t the only person to express her happiness over how the film turned out—particularly with respect to its ability to break boundaries in the Hollywood inclusion arena. On Friday, the Asian Voices editor at the Huffington Post, Kimberly Yam, took to Twitter to explain, in an emotional eight-part thread, exactly what seeing a cast of predominantly East Asian descent in the film meant to her.

“You’re 8 years old. Your 3rd grade class orders chinese food & your father delivers it. You are so excited to see your pops in school. He’s your hero. But apparently other kids don’t think he’s so cool. They laugh at him and mimic his accent. You don’t want to be Chinese anymore,” she begins—continuing through a series of difficult moments throughout her life when she felt ashamed of her Chinese ethnicity while growing up in the U.S.

Concludes Yam in her last tweet: “You’re 25 years old. You see a movie with an all-asian cast at a screening and for some reason you’re crying and you can’t stop. You’ve never seen a cast like this in Hollywood. Everyone is beautiful. You’re so happy you’re Chinese. #CrazyRichAsians #RepresentationMatters”

A 'Roseanne' Spinoff Without Roseanne Barr Is Officially Happening


The Roseanne revival may have had incredibly high ratings when it debuted, but the show was still cancelled in May after star Roseanne Barr tweeted racist statements about Valerie Jarrett, a former Barack Obama aide. At the time of the cancellation, the president of ABC Entertainment wrote in a statement: “Roseanne’s Twitter statement is abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values, and we have decided to cancel her show.” Now, just a few weeks later, ABC has found a way to continue the show without its lead.

An official statement from Tom Werner, executive producer, and Barr, confirms that the show will be spun off to no longer include it’s namesake character nor the actress’s financial or creative participation. “I regret the circumstances that have caused me to be removed from Roseanne. I agreed to the settlement in order that 200 jobs of beloved cast and crew could be saved, and I wish the best for everyone involved” said Barr in the statement. Werner added, “We are grateful to have reached this agreement to keep our team working as we continue to explore stories of the Conner family.” Original stars John Goodman, Laurie Metcalf, Sara Gilbert, Lecy Goranson, and Michael Fishman will reportedly all return for the spinoff. Barr will, however, retain an executive producer credit on the spinoff, per Writers Guild of America rules.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the spinoff’s working title is The Conners and has been ordered for 10 episodes. The new show, which is expected to premiere in the fall, will follow the Conner family who, “after a sudden turn of events, are forced to face the daily struggles of life in Lanford in a way they never have before” and will explore issues with parenthood, an unexpected pregnancy, financial pressures, aging and in-laws in working-class America. Though Barr will not be involved in The Conners in any way, she will reportedly retain all rights to the Roseanne Conner character and any future spinoffs or reboots of the original.

“We have received a tremendous amount of support from fans of our show, and it’s clear that these characters not only have a place in our hearts, but in the hearts and homes of our audience,” Goodman, Metcalf, Gilbert, Goranson, and Fishman said in a joint statement. “We all came back last season because we wanted to tell stories about the challenges facing a working-class family today. We are so happy to have the opportunity to return with the cast and crew to continue to share those stories through love and laughter.”

Ocean's 8 Is Officially No. 1 at the North American Box Office—Thanks Largely to Women


The cast of Ocean’s 8 is basically a who’s-who of talented women: Rihanna, Sandra Bullock, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson, Awkwafina, Helena Bonham Carter, Cate Blanchett, and Anne Hathaway as a villain with ostentatious French-tipped nails (more on that here). Following the formula of previous, male-centric Ocean’s movies, this version shines the spotlight on Bullock, who plays fresh-out-of-prison Debbie Ocean—sister of Danny Ocean (George Clooney)—who assembles a girl gang of specialists to steal a diamond at the Met Gala. And you can guess the capers that go on from there.

Now, the movie has another feather to add to its cap: Ocean’s 8 easily took No. 1 at the North American box office during its first weekend, according to The Hollywood Reporter, with an estimated $41.5 million coming in from a reported 4,145 theaters.

A huge part of its success? The Hollywood Reporter estimates that almost 70 percent of Ocean’s 8‘s opening-weekend audience identified as female. The strong box office showing marks a big win for female-led movies overall—not to mention gender-flipping remakes—and hopefully shows Hollywood, yet again, that audiences will show up for movies that feature strong, compelling, representative characters (looking at you, Black Panther).

'A Christmas Prince' Is Officially Getting A Royal Wedding Sequel


Well, this is a gift: On Friday, May 18—just one day before the big royal wedding between Meghan Markle and Prince Harry—Netflix announced it will be making a sequel to its beloved original movie A Christmas Prince.

In a tweet, Netflix revealed it will be releasing a sequel that follows intrepid reporter Amber Moore (played by Rose McIver) and her fiancé, His Royal Highness Prince Richard (played by Ben Lamb), as they prepare for their own royal wedding.

“Hear Ye, Hear Ye. Ms. Amber Moore and His Royal Highness Prince Richard of Aldovia kindly request the honor of your presence at their royal wedding later this year,” Netflix wrote alongside a video showing the royal family of Aldovia tuning in to the real-life wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

In the clip, Amber furiously takes notes on her computer in her true reporter-ish style, writing things like, “converse wedding shoes” and “don’t become a meme.” (Too late, for that.)

According to Buzzfeed, the hotly-anticipated sequel will pick up right where the first film left off: after Amber helped Richard secure his rightful place as King. It will follow the couple as Amber goes on a journey of personal discovery to see if she really can make a great queen, while Richard deals with some rather unhappy political drama during the holiday season.

As you may or may not recall, people were pretty obsessed with the film when it was released November 2017. In fact, as Netflix shared, some people simply couldn’t stop watching the so-bad-it’s-good movie:

And it looks like this time will be no different as fans quickly hopped on social media to let Netflix know just how happy they are about the decision to bring more Prince Richard to the world.

“Can you believe I was just blow drying my hair thinking ‘I hope they make a Christmas Prince 2’ and I come online and they are,” Twitter user Ellis wrote.

“I can’t believe I finally thought it was safe to delete my giant file of A Christmas Prince screenshots,” another added.

Even McIver tweeted her excitement about the new movie.

In fact, everyone’s so excited about the Christmas Prince sequel they almost forgot about those two IRL royals getting hitched tomorrow. (Almost.) Though Netflix has yet to announce a release date, you can safely assume it will be some time in November or December. 'Outlander' Has Officially Been Renewed for Seasons 5 and 6


Fans of Outlander can rest easy: “Droughtlander” is almost over. Starz announced on Wednesday, May 9, that the fourth season of the hit period drama will return in November 2018. The good news doesn’t stop there, either: The show has officially been renewed for seasons five and six, as well. Cut to me sweating bullets over the saucy sex scenes to come between Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie (Sam Heughan).

“Fans can rest assured their beloved Claire and Jamie will be back facing new challenges, adversaries, and adventures in seasons five and six as we delve into American history and continue the story of the Frasers as they settle in the New World,” Starz CEO Chris Albrecht said in a press release.

Outlander has been a runaway hit for Starz. Based on the novel series by Diana Gabaldon, the show centers on a 1940s woman, Claire, who travels back in time to the eighteenth century and falls in love with a man named Jamie. The only catch, however, is that she also has a husband in her present day: Frank (Tobias Menzies).

That’s the basic synopsis of season one, but the story has advanced quite a bit since then. (Spoiler warning!) Frank actually died in a car accident during season three, and Claire returned to Jamie in the eighteenth century only to find that he’s remarried. A plot to pay off his current wife ended up with Jamie’s nephew Ian being kidnapped by pirates. Jamie and Claire saved him—only to then shipwreck in colonial Georgia, which is where season four will pick up.

Outlander is quite famous for its sex scenes, but Balfe told Glamour last year the show isn’t as steamy as people think. “It’s funny, because there’s probably less sex in our show than people think,” the actress told us. “It’s just when we do it, we try to empower these two characters to represent this metaphysical and all-encompassing love, so we get branded as ‘It’s so sexy!’ But if you look at the amount of episodes that it features in, it’s not in every single one.”

Regardless, additional seasons of Outlander is great news. At the very least, this means more scenes with Jamie’s signature smolder.
