*Saturday Night Live*'s Cold Open Featured the GOP Celebrating Kavanaugh's Confirmation With Brewskis

The devil works fast, but Saturday Night Live works faster: Somehow, between the close of the final Senate vote for Kavanaugh’s confirmation around 4:15 P.M. ET on Saturday and the airing of the show less than seven hours later, the writers room managed to come up with a cold open that imagined how Senate Republicans must be celebrating Kavanaugh’s confirmation.

In the skit, GOP senators are cracking open cold brewskis in tribute to Kavanaugh, who mentioned beer no fewer than 30 times in his Senate hearing following Dr. Christine Blasey Ford’s powerful allegations of sexual assault. The atmosphere? Full-on “locker room” vibes.

“Republicans read the mood of the country, and we could tell that people really wanted Kavanaugh,” Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (Beck Bennett) told CNN reporter Dana Bash (Heidi Gardner). “Everyone’s pumped, from white men over 60 to white men over 70.”

Kate McKinnon also reprised an appearance as Sen. Lindsay Graham. When Bash asked how he felt about the vote, Graham had an ecstatic response: “How amazing is this? We made a lot of women real worried today, but I’m not getting pregnant so I don’t care,” he said as “This Is How We Do It” pulsed in the background.

“We couldn’t have done it without Susan Collins,” Graham continued, referring to Republican Sen. Collins’ pledge to vote yes on Kavanaugh’s confirmation. “Susie, get over here!”

“The last thing I wanted was to make this about me,” Sen. Collins (Cecily Strong) tells Bash. “That’s why I told everyone to tune in at 3 P.M. so I could tell all my female supporters, ‘Psyche!'”

Bash questioned if she thought there was any credit to Dr. Blasey Ford’s allegations against Kavanaugh.

“Listen, I think it’s important to believe women, until it’s time to stop,” she said as Sen. Graham made bunny fingers behind Bash’s head. “I’m a guy’s gal, OK? I can party with the big dogs and, whoop whoop, we’re gonna have fun tonight…. Now we’re gonna party like it’s 2020 when Susan Rice takes my seat.”

Susan Rice, President Barack Obama’s national security adviser, had tweeted “Me” when Jen Psaki asked who would run for Senate in Maine in 2020, indicating she’s open to running.

The Downton Abbey Movie Is Officially Filming, and the Cast Can't Stop Celebrating

Fans who were devastated about Downton Abbey ending received a shining beacon of hope over the summer when news broke a movie adaption of the hit series is happening. Not much is known about the plot at this time, but so many of your favorites from the original series are returning, including Michelle Dockery, Hugh Bonneville, Maggie Smith, and Joanne Froggatt (according to Entertainment Weekly). If that’s not enough to get you pumped, though, then these new Instagram posts from the cast celebrating the first day back shooting will definitely do the trick.

It all kicked off with Michelle Dockery (Lady Mary Crawley), who took to the social media site on Monday and wrote, “And…we’re off ?@downtonabbey_official.” She accompanied her caption with a black-and-white snap of a shot being set up behind-the-scenes. Check it out for yourself, below:

Allen Leech (Tom Branson) then posted a photo of himself and cast-mates Hugh Bonneville (Robert Crawley) and Michael C. Fox (Andrew Parker) playing golf in between rehearsals for the film. Listen, sometimes drinking beer and playing sports helps you get into character for period dramas!

Bonneville actually skipped the first day of filming to see Elizabeth McGovern (Cora Crawley) in a play she’s starring in right now. Who says you can’t work and play at the same time?

“Was so lovely to be sat next to some of these beauties again today while we were having make up tests. So excited to start filming,” Joanne Froggatt (Anna Bates) posted to Instagram alongside a photo of several women from Downton Abbey a few days before filming kicked off.

To say this cast is obsessed with each other is an understatement. We’ll post more photos from the cast filming as they come in.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the Second Woman Supreme Court Justice, Is Celebrating 25 Years on the Bench

On August 10, 1993, Ruth Bader Ginsburg took her judicial oath at the White House, becoming the first Jewish woman and only the second woman justice ever appointed to the Supreme Court. Today she celebrates 25 years on the bench—a major milestone in a career that has turned her into a proud defender of women’s rights and one of the country’s most notorious cultural icons.

There are many reasons the nation loves Ginsburg (her intense workout included), but her work as a feminist trailblazer started way before she took a seat on the highest court in the land. Ginsburg was nominated to the court by President Bill Clinton following the retirement of former Supreme Court Justice Byron White, and she was already a force in the legal world. She had graduated at the top of her class at Cornell University and later attended Harvard Law School, where she was the first female member of the Harvard Law Review. She eventually graduated from Columbia Law, where she was also the first female professor hired on tenure track, which means her job at the institution was secure. Ginsburg also cofounded the Women’s Rights Project at the ACLU and worked there until President Jimmy Carter appointed her to the U.S. Court of Appeals in 1980.

After her Supreme Court nomination, Ginsburg gave an acceptance address on June 14, 1993, that highlighted many of the challenges she’d faced as a woman. She cited that there were less than 10 women in her 500-person law school class, and shared that not one law firm in New York City would hire her after she earned her degree. As women still fight for workplace and wage equality, it’s not hard to see how Ginsburg’s speech is just as relevant today as it was 25 years ago.

She was confirmed by the Senate in a 96–3 vote. As CNN Politics points out, her remarks following the constitutional oath ceremony shed light on the importance of diversity in the American justice system. “A system of justice will be the richer for diversity of background and experience. It will be the poorer, in terms of appreciating what is at stake and the impact of its judgments, if all of its members are cast from the same mold,” she said.

RBG has written some of the Supreme Court’s most notable decisions, including 1996’s United States v. Virginia, a case that struck down a male-only admittance policy at the Virginia Military Institute. In recent years she has fought against arbitration policies that affect workers and women in particular, as well as Trump’s travel ban on majority Muslim countries.

Despite such a historic run, many people have feared that RBG’s tenure might come to an end soon. After her colleague, Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy, announced his retirement, social media users went into a frenzy, pledging to protect RBG at all costs. “I’m buying Ruth Bader Ginsburg an Anytime Fitness membership, 10 years of Vitamins, and a lifetime of Smoothies…” one Twitter user wrote.

Luckily, RBG assuaged everyone’s fears last month when she said she’s not going anywhere in the near future. “I’m now 85,” she said. “My senior colleague, Justice John Paul Stevens, he stepped down when he was 90, so I think I have about at least five more years.”

That’s all we need to assure ourselves there are many more RBG milestones to come.

Prince George Is Celebrating His Fifth Birthday Today

Prince George, the eldest child of Kate Middleton and Prince William, turns five years old today—and what better way to celebrate the junior royal than with cute pictures and official currency? Kensington Palace released an adorable photograph of little George, and, because we’re talking about a possible future king here, the Royal Mint also issued a new £5 coin to mark his first half decade.

On Saturday, Kensington Palace took to Twitter to share a photo that shows Prince George grinning broadly and looking super grown-up since his days as the lone royal baby. The picture was reportedly taken earlier this month in the garden of Clarence House after the christening of his little brother, Prince Louis. The caption reads, “The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are very pleased to share a new photograph of Prince George to mark His Royal Highness’s fifth birthday tomorrow.”

Prince George also got a special gift from the Royal Mint: a limited-edition £5 coin, which features the image of St. George and a dragon. The coin will be available for public purchase today (Sunday), and it marks at least the fourth time Prince George has been honored with commemorative currency: The Royal Mint released coins for his first and second birthdays, as well as for his christening in 2013.

“The birth of Prince George altered the course of history in the United Kingdom, and we are pleased to be marking the fifth birthday of our future king,” Nicola Howell, director of consumer business at The Royal Mint, said in a statement.

But what about the royal birthday bash? The Express points out that Kate and Prince William tend to keep their kids’ parties a private, family affair. They’re rumored to be vacationing in the Carribbean, so it could be that Prince George’s celebration is going to involve a lot of island sun.

Prince George is the third in line for the British throne, following his grandfather Prince Charles and his father Prince William. Already, he’s won people over with his adorable antics alongside his younger sister Princess Charlotte—and personally, we can’t get enough.

Happy birthday, Prince George! Long may you reign over our hearts.
