Coming to Netflix in September 2019: 91 New Titles Are Heading to Your Queue


We really hope you’ve cleared out your Netflix queue over the summer because the streaming platform is about to unleash a slew of new titles.

As per usual, there’s a great mix of old favorites and brand new originals‚ with a little something for everyone. On the horror front, you’ll soon have access to American Psycho, Scream season three, the ninth season of Walking Dead, The Last Exorcism, American Horror Story: Apocalypse, and The I-Land—which looks like Lost meets the Fyre Festival.

If you need a laugh, you can never go wrong with Superbad. But we’re probably most excited about seeing what Zach Galifianakis has come up with for Between Two Ferns: The Movie. And we’re highly anticipating Gwyneth Paltrow’s television acting return in The Politician, which also marks Ryan Murphy’s first original show for Netflix.

Leaving Netflix in September 2019: Say Goodbye to These 46 Movies and TV Shows


It’s almost time to bid farewell to summer—and along with it some of your favorite shows and movies on Netflix.

Has it been a minute since you’ve cried alongside the Braverman family on Parenthood? Well, you’ve got a little more time to reconnect with the whole clan before all six seasons of the show leave the streaming platform on September 25. Cult-favorite comedy Portlandia is also departing, so get in your laughs while you can.

A bunch of iconic movies are leaving Netflix, too, which is a bummer, though we know the streaming platform will never leave us without a million options. Channing Tatum, Matthew McConaughey and the rest of the men of Magic Mike are leaving starting at the beginning of the month. Joining them are Gwyneth Paltrow’s Emma, a couple installments in the Fast and the Furious franchise, The Hangover, The Dark Knight, and Disney’s Mulan. That last one is a serious blow. Alexa, play “Reflection” by Christina Aguilera.

Summer is here. And while it’s wonderful to pack up your coats and sweaters for the season, it’s also that time of year when it seems like everyone is getting out of town. If you’re not among them, though, we have the next best thing: your couch and the best summer movies.

The ‘Orange Is the New Black’ Cast on the Netflix Series’ Final Season and Legacy


This article contains spoilers about the seventh—and final—season of Orange Is the New Black, now streaming on Netflix.

Adrienne C. Moore (Cindy Hayes, the inmate who converts to Judaism in season three) is in Atlanta for her 20-year high school reunion when she calls. “I’ve been to past reunions since the advent of Orange Is the New Black, and one thing I love about my friends is they know Adrienne,” she tells Glamour. They may occasionally blurt out that she’s on a show, she concedes, but “they’re Atlanta folks, and Atlanta folks are very down-to-earth kind of people.”

Like so many members of the sprawling Orange ensemble, Moore was a relative unknown when she was cast on the series. She was booking theater roles, commercials, and guest spots in New York, sure, but breakout opportunities for women, let alone women of color, were rare. Nobody knew who she was.

“This industry is hard,” says Laura Gómez (Blanca Flores, who thought she was being released from Litchfield only to be sent to an immigration facility). “You’re put in a box.” She auditioned for Orange while she was writing and directing a short film at New York University; by that point, she remembers, “I was considering maybe going to Spain to turn things around. I don’t know that I was about to quit acting, but I was thinking of ways to quit the torture that I was experiencing here.”

Selenis Leyva (Gloria Mendoza, who at times was head cook and the leader of the prison’s Spanish Harlem) shares a similar story. “I started acting at the age of 18,” she says. “I did a lot of guest roles, theater—sometimes it was free and sometimes it was as if it was free. You name it.” She was two decades into her career and on the verge of dropping out when she was tapped to play Gloria. “Literally, I said, ‘I’m done with acting,’” she recalls. “And then Orange popped up.”

“What the show did for so many of us, if not all of us, was open or reopen big doors,” Gómez says. “It put us on the map.”

When Orange premiered in 2013, there was some skepticism about whether it would sugarcoat prison. After all, the series is based on a memoir by Piper Kerman—a white middle-class Smith graduate—and stars Taylor Schilling as the fish-out-of-water inmate. But as creator Jenji Kohan explained from the outset, Piper was her “Trojan horse”: a stock blond that gave entrée into a more expansive world, one where women of all colors, shapes, sexual orientations, and ages coexisted. Orange wasn’t a Pollyanna prison story, and Kohan wasn’t making TV as usual.

Leaving Netflix in August 2019: Say Goodbye to These 48 Movies and TV Shows


It’s that time again—the bummer of a day when we find out which of our favorite movies and TV shows will no longer be streaming on Netflix.

Come August, we’ll be saying goodbye to a lot of favorites. Get in one last good cry by watching Good Will Hunting, the movie that turned Ben Affleck and Matt Damon into household names (and Oscar winners for Best Screenplay). Come for the Boston accents; stay for the iconic Robin Williams “It’s not your fault” speech and the haunting Elliot Smith soundtrack. Also leaving Netflix are a bunch of scary thrillers like the Final Destination movies, David Fincher’s Zodiac, Poltergeist, and The Butterfly Effect.

Murder mystery Gosford Park is on the chopping black. Same goes for Bradley Cooper as a troubled chef in Burnt, Ryan Reynolds’s comedy Just Friends, and the teen vampire romance Beautiful Creatures.

Coming to Netflix in August 2019: The Sex and the City Movie Is Back Next Month


Just when I think I’ve maybe, possibly caught up on everything on my list of shows to stream, Netflix drops a bunch more to add to my queue—and honestly, I love them for it.

A ton of titles will be available come August 1. First up, you can watch Charlotte scream at Big in the street for the millionth time in Sex and the City: The Movie. Classic (highly rewatchable) comedies like Four Weddings and a Funeral and Groundhog Day will also be available, along with Quentin Tarantino’s Jackie Brown and all the original Rocky films.

But there are also new seasons of Netflix original series like GLOW, Mindhunter, and Dear White People. I suggest catching up on the earlier episodes right now before they debut. I’m also super excited for Tiffany Haddish Presents: They Ready which will showcase new comedians and Falling Inn Love, a rom-com starring Cristina Milian as a city girl who wins a New Zealand inn in a contest and “teams up with bighearted contractor Jake Taylor (Adam Demos) to fix and flip it.” That sounds sure to tug my corny heartstrings.
