‘Little Fires Everywhere’ Review: Reese Witherspoon and Kerry Washington’s Hulu Series Is Gripping

Speaking of the ’90s, the show goes to great lengths to accurately portray fashion and beauty standards as they existed before the turn of the century. “We really tried to strike a balance in the production design and wardrobe design so that it felt real without feeling campy,” Washington says. “We didn’t want you to think we we were having a ’90s costume party.”

Part of the fun in that is watching Elena go from a Kathy Smith–esque workout queen in the morning to a Talbot’s power-suit-wearing working woman in the afternoon. Add in an iconic ’90s playlist (everything from Annie Lennox to Hootie and the Blowfish) and delightfully dated phrases (“I’m already over my minutes this month,” Elena says of her car phone), and you have the makings of a classic.

Hulu drops the first three episodes today, March 18, but will then release one a week for the remainder of the series run. Witherspoon says that unique rollout plan will help set up the world before “everything changes.”

It’s also why Washington thinks you should wait to read Ng’s book until after you finish the TV series. “They are different enough,” she explains. “We’ve made enough small changes that it could be confusing to read it and watch at the same time. But if you haven’t read the book, you have to at some point.”

As for the show, Witherspoon and Washington can’t wait to see what conversations the series will provoke. “Part of our instinct as human beings is to evaluate and judge others, and that’s part of the experience of watching this,” Witherspoon says. “It’s going, Am I like them? Or, Am I like her? Or, I know someone just like her. All of that will shift and change by the time you get to the end. It takes you to a lot of places that are unexpected.”

Witherspoon is right. Even in today’s must-see-TV landscape, I haven’t been this gripped by developments on screen in some time. Washington and Witherspoon’s commitment to bringing Ng’s story to life comes through in every way. “We gave so much of ourselves in the making of it,” Washington says, “and we want people to be inspired to do the same.”

Veronica Mars Review: The Hulu Reboot Is Just As Good As the Original


Good news, fellow citizens of Neptune. The fourth season of mid-aughts teen-noir Veronica Mars just dropped on Hulu on July 19, and it’s already joined the rarefied ranks of Will & Grace and Queer Eye: That is, it’s a reboot that’s just as good as the original. Fans of the franchise (which included two fantastic seasons, a mediocre third, and a misfire of a movie) won’t be disappointed, and newcomers…well, newcomers should go back and watch season one.

But if you’re just tuning in, here’s a quick recap: Veronica Mars (Kristen Bell) is the daughter of private investigator Keith Mars (Enrico Colantoni). Keith was the sheriff of the seaside hamlet of Neptune, California until he “botched” the investigation of the murder of Lilly Kane (Amanda Seyfried). Veronica and Lilly had been best friends, but her dad’s investigation essentially leads to her becoming a friendless outcast at the start of the series. What follows is a season that revolves around Veronica discovering who done it, finding love along the way, and solving the equally pressing (and not unrelated) mystery of who raped her at a high school party. Veronica Mars handled a complicated and compelling case with witty dialogue and genuine emotion, establishing itself as one of the smartest teen dramas around.

But Veronica’s work is always about more than just the hunt for justice, though it was definitely also about that. Veronica Mars is about race and sex and class, friendship and love, entering the adult world before you’re ready. Like Buffy, it was the teen girl experience heightened to the thousandth degree. By the end, fans found themselves not just rooting for Veronica but positively screaming for her. The show inspired a fierce fanbase, which is why now, years later, Hulu has blessed us with a reboot. All caught up? Good. Mild spoilers ahead.

From the get, this new season assures us that the more things change, the more they, you know, don’t. Veronica’s first case of the season is helping a wealthy divorcée named Carson (Eliza Coupe) de-bug her smart home after her ex hacked into it. In other words, this season has all the major themes—sex, revenge, manipulation, harassment, and class conflict—fans of the series have come to expect. As for Veronica herself, she’s living (and having hot, hot sex) with boyfriend Logan (Jason Dohring), working (and bantering) with father Keith, and, naturally, solving murders. She’s a 2019 girl with a smartphone and an updated version of her school-age messenger bag, but she’s basically the same Veronica: She picks locks, she loves dogs, she rejects Logan’s marriage proposal because the wounds of her adolescence have left too much scar tissue.

Here's Everything Coming and Leaving Hulu in August 2018


It’s that time of the year, people: Bachelor in Paradise. Yes, in just a few short weeks we’ll start watching our favorite Bachelor and Bachelorette cast-offs find love (or, at least, a quick make-out sesh) and have petty fights in Mexico. It’s television at its finest, TBH, and no worries if you don’t have cable: The season premiere will be available for streaming on Hulu starting August 8. In fact, you can keep up with the entire season on Hulu—and even watch it in real time if you have Hulu Live.

But that’s not the only must-see movie or TV show coming to Hulu in August.
