Macy's National Lipstick Day Sale – The Best Lipsticks Up to 50% Off

National Lipstick Day is today, and before you go, “Wait, that’s a thing now?” I advise you not to question it too much and just lean in, because Macy’s is having a major sale on lipstick to mark the “holiday.” A sale on some of best brands (and products) in the lip color game? Yeah, not gonna question its raison d’être. And it’s legit, with discounts up to 50% off brands like Tarte, Urban Decay, and more—trust, this is the time to replace your favorite summery coral lipstick or play with a non-sticky, shimmery lip gloss formulated for your fully adult self. (Yes, lip gloss is back, and it still smells delightfully like cake batter.)

Just be sure to act fast: With these kinds of deals, it’s only a matter of time before much-loved shades sell out. And there are some great products going: Urban Decay’s Lo-Fi Lip Mousse is BOGO (buy one, get one free), NYX’s excellent metallic matte liquid lipstick (one of our faves) is 30% off, and a five-star-rated, buildable Tarte matte lip tint is half off. Elsewhere, Smashbox’s Be Legendary lipsticks are all 40% off, and Estée Lauder’s whole lip line is BOGO, too. All that to say, it’s basically guaranteed you’ll find more than a few options to add to cart.

It all kicks off (and ends) this Monday, July 29—both in stores and online—so don’t let the chance to grab your fave lip color slip by. We’ve picked out 12 of our favorite products from the sale, from lip glosses to lip mousse.

Macy's Pulls 'Mom Jeans' Plates After Internet Outrage

You may have seen a controversial plate making the internet rounds this week: a recent tweet from comedian Alie Ward spotlighted a dish with a design that features three concentric circles: the smallest is labeled “skinny jeans;” the middle, “favorite jeans;” and the largest, “mom jeans.” Macy’s is hardly the first retailer to sell something as clueless as portion control plates—Google the phrase and you’ll get about 125,000,000 results—but this version is very, very stupid. Especially for a mom jeans-loving mom.

The implication of the design appears to be “lol, moms all let themselves go and eat way too much! Disgusting! Don’t be like them! Keep your food fitting inside the very tiny circle in the center of the plate and you’ll never have to wear mom jeans!” Aside from the frankly concerning disordered-eating messaging that these plates encourage with their attempt at portion control, these plates also don’t make any real health sense. The amount of space a food takes up on your plate means, absolutely nothing. Having a cauliflower steak for dinner? According to this plate, you’re doomed! Stacked your tiny cheese cubes into a Jenga tower? Congrats on your well-balanced meal.

But the most offensive thing about this plate is the implication that being the owner of “mom jeans” is something shameful. Or that all “mom jeans” are being worn by people—presumably moms—who are not, I guess, taking care of themselves? Who are daring to stuff their mom bodies into jeans? As a mom myself, it’s offensive and also almost laughable.

Honestly, these plates are so bafflingly off-base that I don’t really know what the designer thought mom jeans even were. My favorite “mom jeans” are high-waisted and difficult to sit for long periods in. I would definitely take them off if I was going to eat a big dinner, not put them on—which I would do whenever I wanted to, because a plate is not telling me what to do!

Kelly Clarkson Nailed Her Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade Performance

Kelly Clarkson performed at the grand American spectacle that is the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade on Thursday, and it’s safe to say she absolutely nailed the performance. The American Idol alum withstood cold that dipped below 20 degrees to bowl over her fans with a live vocal performance during the parade—something that’s pretty unheard of given the floats’ usual technical capabilities and the freezing weather that puts even the most talented voices on edge.

Instead of keeping it chilled out with some pre-recorded vocals—as most artists understandably do (more on that later)—Clarkson went straight-up live, with a full set featuring a complete stage, backup band, and a fiery performance of “Heat,” from her Meaning of Life album. And not that we would expect anything less, but it was hands-down incredible.

Check it out:

It’s safe to say fans were in awe after her performance: “Kelly Clarkson is actually performing live (and not to track like everyone else is basically forced to do) at the #MacysParade when will ur fave ever,” one person wrote.

“I just need to say, Kelly Clarkson is freaking amazing. Live performance outside in 19° weather, and she was flawless. ? #MacysParade #HappyThanksgiving,” another wrote.

“It is 19° in NYC and Kelly Clarkson is singing live! She is the only thing I’m thankful for this year. #MacysDayParade,” another tweeted.

Others pointed out that Clarkson was the only one singing live: “No one else is singing live for the Macy’s parade except Kelly Clarkson, actual queen.”

Others called for more Clarkson, please. “Replace the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade with an annual multi-hour Kelly Clarkson concert spectacular,” one wrote.

One user also pointed out something a little ironic about Clarkson’s stoic performance: “I’m dying at the irony of @kelly_clarkson performing Heat in that intense cold at the #MacysParade,” they tweeted.

And yes, Clarkson was very much aware: “The irony wasn’t lost on us either ?,” she responded.

It should be pointed out that while Rita Ora caught a lot of flak for lip-syncing during the parade, not singing live is in fact the norm. Clarkson is very much the exception to the rule and was reportedly on a specially designed float, as a certain John Legend cleared up: “Fun fact. We all have to lip sync on this parade because the floats don’t have the capacity to handle the sound requirements for a live performance,” he tweeted after his own lip-synced performance. “Hope y’all enjoyed it anyway. Know that if you come to my shows, the vocals are 100% live!”

Clarkson also tweeted an adorable thank you after the show: “So my toes finally have feeling back in them ? that was a very cold Thanksgiving moment! I’ve been beggin’ the Lord for winter, and well, he answered,” she wrote. “#MacysDayParade thanks for having us! So thankful and appreciative for all the blessings in my life! Y’all have a good one! ?.”

If you already had your list prepared to share around the table of what you were thankful for at dinner, well, now you have one more thing to add to it. Happy Thanksgiving, one and all—and especially Kelly Clarkson.

We’re entering the sale dead zone: That time between Columbus Day and Thanksgiving when brands save all their best goods for Black Friday deals. It’s great if you’re trying to save up for the biggest shopping day of the year, bad if you have a shopping itch to scratch or are running low on your favorite mascara. Running from Friday, October 12 through Sunday, October 21, Macy’s 10 Days of Glam Sale isn’t playing around with the discounts. Meanwhile, you can catch more products that’ll also be steeply discounted throughout the entirety of the sale, like Dr. Brandt’s beloved face scrub and Smashbox’s Vlada Highlighter. Macy's Will Start Carrying Verona Collection, Its First Modest Fashion Line

Macy’s is the latest mass retail company to introduce merchandise that caters to Muslim consumers. The department store chain announced on Thursday that it’s teaming up with Verona Collection, a modest clothing brand cofounded by Lisa Vogl and Alaa Ammuss, to stock a selection of dresses, pants, cardigans, tops, and hijabs, according to The Huffington Post.

The partnership stemmed from the retailer’s The Workshop at Macy’s initiative, which aims to foster and support minority- and women-owned businesses into potential future retail partners. (Verona Collection participated in the program.) “Verona Collection is more than a clothing brand,” the modest fashion line’s cofounder said in a press release. “It’s a platform for a community of women to express their personal identity and embrace fashion that makes them feel confident on the inside and outside.”

Starting on February 15, shoppers will be able to shop an edit of Verona Collection’s ready-to-wear piece—including abayas and headscarves—online, on Macy’s website. Prices are expected to range from $12.95 to $84.95.

“Through The Workshop at Macy’s, Lisa shared her vision to create a collection that speaks to a community of women looking for a solution to their fashion needs,” Cassandra Jones, senior vice president of Macy’s Fashion, added. “Verona Collection offers a unique and understated elegance through everyday essentials designed for versatility and comfort, and through our partnership, we can better serve our customer looking for modest fashion.”

Macy’s joins Dolce & Gabbana, American Eagle Outfitters, Nike, and a handful of other brands in expanding its offerings to speak to the Muslim shopper, either through limited-edition collections or permanent product additions—and in wanting to tap into a sizable market that for years had been neglected by mainstream fashion. What’s unique (and commendable) about Macy’s efforts is that it’s being done in partnership with an independent, Muslim-owned company. Hopefully, we see more of this in 2018.
