13 TV and Movie Premieres That Will Get You in the Holiday Spirit This Week


One of the best parts about December is the endless stream of holiday-themed TV specials and films that drop. Are they any good? Eh… But they’re cheesy and ridiculous and unnecessarily sappy—and that’s why we love them. The holiday season is all about sap, after all; it’s the one time a year where we can be unabashedly joyful and giddy. Why shouldn’t our entertainment reflect that?

There are several movies and TV shows airing over the next seven days that will certainly get you in the holiday sprit. But if you’re a Grinch, fear not: The new Star Wars movie also comes out. Here’s what you absolutely can’t miss this week:

A Christmas Reunion: Denise Richards stars in this delightful holiday film about a woman who returns home to co-manage the bakery her aunt left for her. But there’s a catch: Her old boyfriend is the other manager. Saccharine romance and cookies? The Television Academy isn’t ready. 8 P.M. ET on Lifetime

Christmas Princess: This film explores the touching true story of Donaly Marquez, who overcame adolescent hardships to become a Rose Bowl princess. I love inspirations! 7 P.M. ET on UP

Reese Witherspoon and Zendaya Are Partnering for an Amazing New Movie


Reese Witherspoon has made a habit over the past few years of picking female-centered projects. From Gone Girl to Wild to this year’s Emmy-winning smash Big Little Lies, Witherspoon is using her power in Hollywood to amplify women’s voices in front of and behind the camera, and we’re so here for that. Now Zendaya is adding to the girl power by collaborating with Witherspoon as a co-producer on an amazing new film—and she’ll star in it too.

Deadline reports that Witherspoon’s production company, Hello Sunshine, will produce a new psychological thriller, A White Lie. The movie’s based on the Karin Tanabe novel The Gilded Years and centers on a light-skinned black woman named Anita Hemmings (who will be played by—wait for it—Zendaya). Hemmings was the first black women to graduate from Vassar College in 1897—a time when African Americans weren’t allowed to attend the school. Hemmings passed as a white woman to get her degree.

The movie will show Hemmings fully immersing herself into upper-class New York society, where she’s treated as a wealthy white woman. She even finds romance with a rich Harvard student, but he doesn’t know her real identity (nor does anyone else). She has to keep it a secret—hence, ya know, the title.

This project seems like a perfect fit for Zendaya, who’s spoken candidly in the past about wanting to tell more black women’s stories. In fact, she echoed this sentiment at Glamour‘s Women of the Year Awards on Monday night, where she presented congresswoman Maxine Waters with a lifetime achievement award.

“Have you ever been the only woman in a room? What about the only black woman in a room? Our next honoree has reminded us over and over again when we are faced with the despair and defeating odds of that room, we can not allow it to intimidate us,” Zendaya said.

Listen Up, Marvel: It's Time for an All-Female 'Avengers' Movie


If you were one of the thousands (and counting) who saw Thor: Ragnarok this weekend, then you’re in the know: Tessa Thompson‘s Valkyrie is the breakout star of the movie. This is not some boring love interest or worthless sidekick, there only to propel Thor’s story forward. Oh no, Valkyrie—or Scrapper 142, as we first know her—is many things: a badass warrior, a messy drunk, a bisexual woman, a protector of the innocent…to name just a few.

By the movie’s end, it’s obvious this won’t be the last we’ve seen of Valkyrie in the Marvel universe. But aside from some vague references to her past and a brief-but-awesome scene that teases her complicated backstory, there’s clearly so much more to learn about this character. So much so, in fact, that fans have been calling for a spin-off. (Personally, I’d love to see a prequel of the Valkyries’ battle with Hela. It’d be so badass, right?)

Here are just a few of the brilliant ideas floating around on social media:

It doesn’t stop there, though. Others would like to see an all-female Avengers movie with Valkyrie at the center:

And that latter idea actually has some legs to it. In an interview with CBR.com, Tessa revealed that she—along with fellow Marvel stars Zoe Saldana, Scarlett Johansson, Pom Klementieff, Karen Gillan, and Brie Larson—approached Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige to pitch the concept. “We were just sort of all in a semicircle talking, and it just came up, because none of us really worked together…and wouldn’t it be nice if we could all work together?” she explained. “We were sort of speculating on they ways in which it might happen in Infinity War, or might not happen, and we thought, ‘No, we should just have a whole movie where we know every day we’re going to arrive and get to work together.’ So we just ran right up to Kevin Feige and started talking about it.”

According to her, “He’s really open to collaboration and wants to hear what we’re interested in.” There’s actually some precedent in the comics, too: In the ’70s, an all-female group called the Lady Liberators were created by the Enchantress. The team consisted of Black Widow and Scarlet Witch—and they were led by Valkyrie.

Of course, these are just pipe dreams until Marvel announces anything officially. The studio would be wise to listen to Tessa, though, because this is long overdue. Yes, Marvel’s action movies have been doing a better job lately of creating female characters who are more integral to the story and, perhaps even more importantly, the fights. (Take Gamora in Guardians of the Galaxy, for a recent example.) Even better, we’re finally getting a female-fronted standalone with Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel in 2019. But let’s not forget that this is the same company that’s slept on a Black Widow solo film for years and rarely includes actions figures of her in Avengers toy rollouts:

But, end of day, money talks—and that’s where I’d like to direct Marvel’s attention to Wonder Woman. The film has made their rival, DC Comics, more than $821.75 million worldwide. So if that’s not evidence enough this could work, what is?

Blake Lively Is Totally Unrecognizable on the Set of Her New Movie


Blake Lively’s made a habit of picking roles post-Gossip Girl that have required her to transform in some way. In 2016’s The Shallows, she swapped her signature glam aesthetic for a sandy wetsuit and beach waves. In All I See Is You, which premiered last month, Lively dyed her hair chestnut brown—a far cry from the bright, California blond she’s known for. And in A Simple Favor, her new movie with Anna Kendrick due out next year, she looks straight out of Orange Is the New Black.

But she makes her most drastic change, hands down, in the upcoming thriller The Rhythm Section, which is based on the bestselling book series by Mark Burnell and also stars Jude Law. Lively plays Stephanie Patrick, a woman whose family dies in what she originally thinks is a plane accident. However, when she discovers the crash was intentional, she goes undercover as an assassin to find the people responsible.

And these new photos from the set show just how “undercover” Lively looks. The actress is virtually unrecognizable in the short, shaggy wig she’s required to wear for the role. Don’t take our word for it, though. Check it out for yourself, below:

Granted, we’re not 100 percent sure this is a wig. For all we know, she could’ve actually chopped her hair off for this movie—but that’s unlikely. Lively will probably have multiple looks in The Rhythm Section because her character is trying to navigate the world unseen. Who knows, though. Maybe this movie will inspire Lively to cut her hair shorter IRL. Serena van der Woodsen would truly be gone if that happened.

The Rhythm Section is slated for a 2019 release.
