Ghosting: The Spirit of Christmas Is Bizarre in the Best Way Possible

Warning: Light spoilers ahead.

The wildest, most delightful holiday movie you’ll watch this year isn’t on Hallmark or Netflix. No, that honor goes to Freeform’s Ghosting: The Spirit of Christmas, a left-of-center rom-com about both relationship ghosting and literal ghosts. (It premiered Wednesday night, December 4, on the network.) At one point, the literal ghost is the one doing the relationship ghosting.

The movie centers on Jess (The Bold Type‘s Aisha Dee), a single twenty-something who goes on a date with the very hot and charming Ben (Kendrick Sampson). They hit things off, exchange numbers, and cutely text on their respective drives home. But then Jess dies in a car crash, unbeknownst to Ben, who assumes she’s ghosting him. It turns out she’s now an actual ghost who can’t ascend to the afterlife. The key, she realizes, is to finish whatever unfinished business she has on Earth.

There are only two people who can see Jess as a ghost: Ben, of course, and her best friend, Kara (Kimiko Glenn), who helps her figure out what this said “unfinished business” is. At first, they think it’s finding true love with Ben, so he and Jess go on some dates. (Remember, she’s a ghost, so, to the outside world, it looks like he’s talking to himself.) Eventually, they have sex during the winter solstice because, for whatever reason, that’s the only time Ben can “feel” Jess like a human. Don’t ask me. This is a movie about ghosts.

But the boning doesn’t work: Jess still can’t ascend. It’s only after she gets in a fight with Kara that she realizes her true love isn’t with Ben: It’s with, well, Kara. This isn’t a romance, though: The takeaway from [Ghosting: The Spirit of Christmas is that worthwhile friendships, like the one Kara and Jess have, reign supreme over any relationship. Tender!

All the Celebrities Who Are Really Getting in the Holiday Spirit

2017 has been quite a year, but there’s nothing quite like the holidays to distract us from the, well, literally countless depressing things that are happening in the headlines right now—at least for a little while.

Here to directly provide that distraction for you are a heaping helping of celebrities getting into the holiday spirit, the perfect cure for admittedly justifiable bah-humbug-ness this season. From trimming trees to baking festive cookies, celebrities are just as susceptible to ‘gramming that holiday content as those of us with only 400 followers are. And from Mariah Carey topping her glammed-up Christmas tree to Drew Barrymore volunteering with a series of different charities, they’re definitely getting in the holiday spirit.

So in case you aren’t feeling like roasting chestnuts just yet, we’re betting a scroll through these photos will do the trick.

The queen of Christmas herself is obviously on top of that #holidaycontent, also having posted pictures with her children as they picked out a Christmas tree and wrote letters to Santa.

Southern gal Reese Witherspoon posted this photo just two days after Thanksgiving, clearly having “get festive” on the top of her to-do list. Hopefully by now her dogs have gotten in the holiday spirit too.

The award for most clever ornament goes to Game of Thrones‘ star Sophie Turner, brilliantly captioning this photo #WinterIsHere.

Drew Barrymore is an inspiration to us all, posting her activities from each day of her #holidayawareweek, in which she spent each day with a different charity organization.

Once a jokester, always a jokester. Mindy Kaling reposted this photo from a 2014 episode of The Mindy Project that coined the “Wreath Witherspoon,” a joke that went viral enough to get the Oscar winner’s attention after Kaling asked fans to share their own Wreath Witherspoons.

Kim Kardashian kicked off December with this solo photo of Saint and a giant pile of presents, which we would soon learn was the first of many teases to the Kardashian-Jenner 2017 Christmas card.

It might not be a traditional Frasier fir, but Emma Roberts is finding the holiday spirit in everything, captioning this “‘tis the season… ?”.

The holidays are a particularly festive time to commemorate relationship milestones. Sarah Hyland noted this is her and boyfriend Wells Adams’ first Christmas tree together.

If you’re not feeling the holiday spirit just yet, follow Nick Jonas‘ lead and simply stand near a festive tree to soak up all the Christmas cheer.

The two Kardashian-Jenner sisters who aren’t rumored to be pregnant show off their skills on the ice.

There aren’t many activities much more festive than baking and decorating holiday cookies—and as Katie Holmes knows, the more icing the better.

Christmas decorations are clearly a big deal at Britney Spears‘ house, complete with an almost life-size reindeer.

13 TV and Movie Premieres That Will Get You in the Holiday Spirit This Week

One of the best parts about December is the endless stream of holiday-themed TV specials and films that drop. Are they any good? Eh… But they’re cheesy and ridiculous and unnecessarily sappy—and that’s why we love them. The holiday season is all about sap, after all; it’s the one time a year where we can be unabashedly joyful and giddy. Why shouldn’t our entertainment reflect that?

There are several movies and TV shows airing over the next seven days that will certainly get you in the holiday sprit. But if you’re a Grinch, fear not: The new Star Wars movie also comes out. Here’s what you absolutely can’t miss this week:

Sunday, December 10

A Christmas Reunion: Denise Richards stars in this delightful holiday film about a woman who returns home to co-manage the bakery her aunt left for her. But there’s a catch: Her old boyfriend is the other manager. Saccharine romance and cookies? The Television Academy isn’t ready. 8 P.M. ET on Lifetime

Christmas Princess: This film explores the touching true story of Donaly Marquez, who overcame adolescent hardships to become a Rose Bowl princess. I love inspirations! 7 P.M. ET on UP

The Bachelor: Countdown to Arie: In a move that no one—literally no one—saw coming, Arie Luyendyk Jr. (and not Hot Peter) is our next Bachelor. If you’re thinking, “who?” then you’re not alone: He was a contestant on The Bachelor season eight back in 2012. This special will catch you up to speed. 10 P.M. ET on ABC

Tuesday, December 12

When Harry Met Meghan: A Royal Engagement : Because we know you want the tea on their relationship. 9 P.M. ET on TLC

Gwen Stefani’s You Make It Feel Like Christmas: Stefani belts out Christmas hits alongside her boo Blake Shelton, Ne-Yo, Chelsea Handler, and Seth McFarlane. If “Hollaback Girl” isn’t performed, though, then it’s not really a holiday special. 9 P.M. ET on NBC

Friday, December 15

Star Wars: The Last Jedi: Rey (Daisy Ridley) is back in this epic Star Wars installment, only this time she’s way more experienced: Her powers are now so intense that they even scare Luke Skywalker. Thankfully, both of their skills will be needed for the war between the Resistance and First Order. Who’s pumped? In theaters

Saturday, December 16

Christmas Shuttle: A young boy shuttles back and forth between his divorced parents during the holidays. On his trip he meets Megan, a flight attendant, who he then tries setting up with his father. This sounds…kind of depressing? But, whatever, I’m into it. 8 P.M. ET on Hallmark

Snowed-Inn Christmas: Two writers who hate each other find themselves snowed in (eh?) at the same inn, where sparks fly and ~*ChRiStMaS mAgIc happens. Slay my soul, Lifetime! 8 P.M. ET on Lifetime
