Model Teddy Quinlivan Shares How She Gets Ready for a Date

Google “date night beauty” and you’ll get tips on bombshell hair, bedroom eyes, and why your date will love it. Sorry to all the potential Tinders matches here, but we believe in getting ready for no one but ourselves. That’s why we created the Date Prep Diaries, a personal look into the different pre-date rituals of women across America.

First up: Teddy Quinlivan, 24, single and a model in New York City and Paris

When it comes to beauty, my philosophy is that if you love yourself unapologetically, the right person will come to you. I don’t swipe on a magic mascara or lipstick and feel less insecure. It’s something I’ve had to work on internally for years and years. So when I go on a date, I try to look the most like my natural self.

I was so nervous I wasn’t going to live a normal life anymore when I came out as trans two years ago [especially when it came to dating]. But I’ve actually been pleasantly surprised. Not only has my life been normal, but I’ve been dating more and having more successful dates. It’s not like I tell anyone or announce that I’m trans before a date, because that’s not the most important thing about me. But if somebody is not attracted to me for something I have no control over, like my trans identity, there’s literally nothing I can do about it. This is who I am.

How often I go on dates varies. It really just depends on what mood I’m in. Sometimes I’ll be really busy and I don’t have time to go on any dates in a month, but other times I’ll be thirsty, and so I’ll go out on multiple dates in a week. I never go out to dinner with a boy [on a first date], especially if I’m meeting somebody from Tinder. A whole dinner can take an entire hour, and if I don’t find you attractive, then I’m just not going to devote that time to you. So my strategy is to be like, “Let’s go grab a drink.” Sometimes I don’t even want to do that, so I’ll suggest, “Let’s hang out at your place.” But I’m not really a Netflix and chill kind of girl, and I never want there to be an insinuation that it’ll lead to sex in any way, shape, or form. It’s never on the table from the get-go. It has to be earned.

The thing boys always compliment me on is my skin—they notice that. Plus, I like to feel dewy and fresh. So when I’m getting ready for a date, I usually start out by doing a face mask like Dr. Jart’s sheet masks or Sisley’s Black Rose one. Then, I exfoliate my lips with a MAC lip scrub, because I always want to have the most soft, kissable lips. After that, I moisturize with the Trish McEvoy Beauty Booster Serum, which I swear by, and Creme de la Mer.

As a passable transgender woman, I know a lot of other trans women feel more comfortable wearing more makeup. I do too in my daily life, but when I’m out on a date I don’t feel like I need to wear a lot. It’s very rare for me to find somebody I connect with, and when I do find that person, I don’t want something like my makeup overshadowing me. So I’ll usually keep my skin natural and add a little bit of La Prairie’s Cream Blush and a taupe eye with a little highlight in the corner. I always like to make my lashes look really full and thick with the Dior Pump n Show Mascara. And anything that draws attention to your lips is key, so I love the Fenty Gloss Bomb.

Why Is this Victoria's Secret Model Exercising at In-N-Out Burger?

Victoria’s Secret model Kelly Gale is catching some heat online for an Instagram video she posted of herself at In-N-Out Burger.

Gale, her Victoria’s Secret–worthy abs, and her friends were recently at an In-N-Out Burger, where they were very definitely not eating the fast food. “We’re at…In-N-Out? So I guess I’m having my pear,” Gale says, in her Instagram Story obtained by E! News.

If not indulging in an order of fries, what was the model doing there, you ask? Apparently, working out. In a later slide, Gale showed off her workout equipment—yes, while still at In-N-Out—and then fully begins exercising as restaurant patrons eat inside. “Who else works out at an In-N-Out?” she wrote in one caption. “Not gonna pretend that I eat here guys ’cause I don’t.”

Watch the full, baffling, video for yourself, below:

Naturally, this is causing quite a stir online, with many people accusing Gale of fat shaming people who eat at In-N-Out Burger.

Others, however, are coming to her defense.

But, honestly, I’m just confused more than anything. Why was Gale at this In-N-Out Burger to begin with? Is she doing an exercise tour of fast-food restaurants? Is Pilates at Pizza Hut next on her list? The concept of going to a restaurant, not eating the food, and then exercising at said restaurant is just baffling. You wouldn’t show up to an Applebee’s and play hide-and-go-seek! You’d eat their iconic quesadilla burger and revel in a decision well made.

The fat-shaming implications here do have some merit. It’s not unreasonable to think people would feel bad eating at a fast-food restaurant as a literal Victoria’s Secret model does lunges in the parking lot. Contrary to what some people may think, it’s entirely possible to live a healthy lifestyle and eat fast food every now and then. In fact, I encourage it! Life without french fries is no life worth living.

I do commend Gale for one thing: being up front about her diet as opposed to saying she eats pizza and cheeseburgers all the time. So many models do that in attempt to be “relatable,” and it just ends up making us feel crappy about ourselves. Achieving the body of a Victoria’s Secret Angel is damn near impossible. It requires very sad lifestyle choices—like, as Gale proves here, eating pears at In-N-Out Burger.

Kendall Jenner Is Officially the Highest-Paid Model of 2018

Kendall Jenner just turned 23, but she’s already leading the modeling industry for the second consecutive year.

Forbes unveiled its annual ranking of the highest paid models yesterday (December 13.) Topping the list was Jenner, who reportedly raked in $22.5 million between June 1, 2017 and June 1, 2018.

PHOTO: ANGELA WEISS

Her earnings came with the help of some notably high-profile gigs, according to Forbes: Jenner continued her longstanding partnerships with brands like Adidas and Estée Lauder this year, and booked appearances at international fashion weeks and the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show.

Last year, Jenner knocked Gisele Bündchen out of the highest-earnings spot—a title she’d held since 2002—by earning a reported $22 million. This year, Jenner held onto her first-place ranking by several million dollars; Karlie Kloss followed her to second place with a reported $13 million in earnings. Rounding out the top five list of earners were Chrissy Teigen and Rosie Huntington-Whitely in a tie for third highest-earnings with $11.5 million, followed by a tie for fifth between Gisele Bündchen and Cara Delevingne with $10 million.

Despite raking in the cash in 2018, Jenner has also faced her share of controversy within the modeling industry. Earlier this year, she told Love magazine that she is “super selective” about the jobs she takes. Her quote was heavily criticized by other models who accused her of having special privileges because she belongs to a famous family. Jenner later clarified her comments in a tweet, but still received some pushback from fellow models Naomi Campbell and Ashley Graham. “These t*ts and a** have just had to fight through and break down barriers everyday,” Graham said.

Will Jenner hold on to the title for a third-year running? Check back in with Forbes next fall.

Rihanna Reportedly Has a Lookalike Model to Try Out Brow Looks, As You Do When You're Rihanna

For anyone who does their own eyebrows, you know the sheer horror of realizing you plucked a little too aggressively. (And, well, if that happened to you—hi, we see you!—this magic brow pen is a great way to help fix that!) Celebrities and the otherwise well-connected are largely spared this indignity, thanks to a) access to the top brow artists in the biz and b) regular appointments with said artistes. Should the worst happen, there’s always a glam squad around to make sure it looks like it never did. You have those people, and then you have Rihanna, who reportedly employs a test model to make sure that whatever’s going to happen to her brows looks good before the process begins. Yes, we do have more details, thank you for asking.

Rihanna has singlehandedly managed to repatriate the skinny brow to our collective consciousness. And according to Damone Roberts, the artist responsible for her brows (as well as those of Beyoncé, Jenna Dewan, and Oprah—yup, casual), Rihanna has a unique way of trying out new shapes. He told Entertainment Tonight: “This year, we first met for the Met Gala, and she wanted to lighten her eyebrows. So Rihanna’s so fly that she has a lookalike model come by your space, and you try out different looks on the eyebrows on the model, and you send pictures to Rihanna and she decides whether she wants to do it or not!”

Uh, what?

Let Roberts explain: “So literally a lookalike model we trialed and tried and everything else until we got them perfect, and we sent Rihanna the pictures and we heard nothing and of course two days before the Met Gala she’s like, ‘I loved them! You gotta fly to NY and take care of me!’ and do them and whatnot, and of course Rihanna shut down the show! It was really, really special.”

In the realm of celebrity, this isn’t totally unheard of: Kim Kardashian reportedly has fit models that try on her fashion looks for her. Still, brows!

Roberts did also confirm to ET, though, that Rih is really just as awesome as she seems: “Rihanna has become one of my favorite people. Now of course I was a fan like everyone else, but once I started working with her this year I have become a fan of her as a person because she is so fly and dope! I can’t think of any other word because she really personifies ‘Rock Star.'”

We appreciate both his confirmation that she is fly and also that her brows truly come from a magical place.

This Model Just Wore a Breast Pump Down the Runway at London Fashion Week

It was just last week that Rihanna‘s Savage x Fenty show made headlines for including pregnant women in lingerie at its presentation. And then again for what happened immediately backstage, when model Slick Woods went into labor and had to be taken straight from the show to the hospital. Now, on the other side of the Atlantic, another new mom and model is making waves on the internet.

At London Fashion Week on Friday, a model wearing a breast pump strutted her way down the stage, reportedly making her the first model to do so.

The model, Valeria Garcia, was in the Marta Jakubowski Spring 2019 show after giving birth to her second child in June. Her outfit featured an open trouser suit with what appeared to be a black-and-white bra—or at least that’s what it seemed like at first.

See those white bra-insert-y objects? That’s the Elvie breast pump, which is being billed as the first-ever wearable device. It’s cleverly designed to sit under bra cups, and moms can use an app to control milk flow “silently and discreetly,” no matter where they might be (even at, say, a Fashion Week runway show). It’s definitely an advancement when it comes to breast pumps, as lots of new moms still deal with clunky, noisy pumping equipment.

But she’s not the first model to use her runway platform to break down the stigma around breastfeeding in public. Sports Illustrated model Mara Martin walked at the brand’s swimwear show during Miami Swim Week this year while breastfeeding her five-month-old baby.

“I can’t believe I am waking up to headlines with me and my daughter in them for doing something I do every day,” she posted on Instagram after the event. “It is truly so humbling and unreal to say the least. I’m so grateful to be able to share this message and hopefully normalize breastfeeding and also show others that women CAN DO IT ALL!”

There’s no word yet on when or for how much the Elvie will be on sale. But there is a wait list, and suffice to say, with this kind of publicity, it’s likely to get some very interested customers fast.

Why Brandon Maxwell Cast His Grandmother as a Model in His Latest Campaign

Designer Brandon Maxwell, a favorite of Lady Gaga’s, Naomi Campbell’s, and, just recently, Meghan Markle’s, has had Gigi Hadid, Joan Smalls, and Jourdan Dunn walk down his runway and appear in his lookbooks. But for the casting of his fall 2018 campaign, he went in a different direction, booking 81-year-old Louise Johnson to model his latest collection. It’s OK if you’re not familiar with that name (for now): Johnson is Maxwell’s grandmother.

In the campaign Johnson is photographed wearing Brandon Maxwell fall 2018 looks (two of which appeared on the Fashion Week runway on Bella and Gigi Hadid). The familial connection between model and designer isn’t the only thing that’s personal about this campaign: It was shot in Longview, Texas, Maxwell’s hometown, and where Johnson spent part of her career working as a buyer at a local boutique (a job that would inspire her grandson to pursue a career in fashion), and was created in collaboration with Maxwell’s fiancé, Jessy Price.

Maxwell tells Glamour that the idea for this campaign originated a year ago. The intention was to shoot both of his grandmothers in his collection, but his paternal grandmother passed away unexpectedly before they were able to do so. “I just thought right now, I’m in a place in my life where I’m thinking a lot about who I am and where I’m from and what made me who I am, and very core to that story obviously is my grandmother,” he says. “I grew up in a clothing store with her—under a clothing rack, under the cash register…. She really pushed me to do what I do today. And I think that there’s no better way to honor that than giving her that space.”

Maxwell and Price felt a responsibility to “have this one shot to tell the authentic, true story,” the designer explains. “As you go out into the world to pursue your dreams, you have to leave your family, and that’s very hard. And you’re hoping, ultimately, that you can do something that makes them proud, that gives you a little bit of success and them a little bit of recognition. You’re always racing against the clock for that to happen, because you’re out in the world chasing your dreams and people are getting older. I felt pride and excitement that we had arrived at this point that I was able to do that, and also the immense pressure to honor her in a way that made her feel purpose.”

This isn’t the first time Johnson wears Brandon Maxwell. The designer recently designed her a custom outfit for his sister’s wedding. In the campaign she’s photographed in a few key looks from his fall 2018 collection. Though the designer says there wasn’t a specific strategy behind picking out what his grandmother would model, some of the pieces are a nod to her life. “Her thing is really watering the yard in her jeans, so that’s why we had her sitting on an apple box in her yard, in jeans,” Maxwell says. “I wanted us to do things that were authentic—I thought, also, the coat that Bella wore to open the show…[Johnson] is always walking around the house in a robe like that, so I wanted to make sure that it was core to who she is.”

Maxwell wanted to release the fall 2018 campaign in August—a time that’s typically slow for the fashion news cycle, since a lot of people are out on vacation before Fashion Week—because it’s Johnson’s birthday. Still, while teasing the images and accompanying film on social media, he realized, based on the response he was getting from followers, that “everyone has a Mammaw—it may not be a grandmother, it could be an aunt or a mother, but everybody has some version of that woman in their life that’s special to them, that defines something for them in their life. I felt this sort of community around [the campaign].”

Ultimately, that type of personal connection is what Maxwell thinks all of this—his designs, his campaigns, his brand—is all about: having people reach out and say that something he made spoke to them. “It’s not about the dress or the pants right—it’s about the feeling.”
