Kendall Jenner Is Officially the Highest-Paid Model of 2018


Kendall Jenner just turned 23, but she’s already leading the modeling industry for the second consecutive year.

Forbes unveiled its annual ranking of the highest paid models yesterday (December 13.) Topping the list was Jenner, who reportedly raked in $22.5 million between June 1, 2017 and June 1, 2018.

Her earnings came with the help of some notably high-profile gigs, according to Forbes: Jenner continued her longstanding partnerships with brands like Adidas and Estée Lauder this year, and booked appearances at international fashion weeks and the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show.

Last year, Jenner knocked Gisele Bündchen out of the highest-earnings spot—a title she’d held since 2002—by earning a reported $22 million. This year, Jenner held onto her first-place ranking by several million dollars; Karlie Kloss followed her to second place with a reported $13 million in earnings. Rounding out the top five list of earners were Chrissy Teigen and Rosie Huntington-Whitely in a tie for third highest-earnings with $11.5 million, followed by a tie for fifth between Gisele Bündchen and Cara Delevingne with $10 million.

Despite raking in the cash in 2018, Jenner has also faced her share of controversy within the modeling industry. Earlier this year, she told Love magazine that she is “super selective” about the jobs she takes. Her quote was heavily criticized by other models who accused her of having special privileges because she belongs to a famous family. Jenner later clarified her comments in a tweet, but still received some pushback from fellow models Naomi Campbell and Ashley Graham. “These t*ts and a** have just had to fight through and break down barriers everyday,” Graham said.

Serena Williams Tops Forbes' Highest-Paid Female Athletes of 2018


As Serena Williams gears up for her next Grand Slam tournament—the U.S. Open in New York—she continues to prove that she is the greatest athlete of all time by topping Forbes‘ list of highest paid female athletes, despite only earning $62,000 in prize money over the past 12 months.

Obviously, Williams’ straight-from-tennis earnings would be down in a year that saw her take significant time off before and after the birth of her adorable daughter, Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr. (She didn’t play competitively for 14 months.) But her bankability has long been about more than just her athletic accomplishments and she pulled in $18.1 million in endorsements and business ventures, which include her Serena clothing line.

That’s more than twice as much off-the-court as the next woman on the list, Williams’ good friend and fellow tennis star Caroline Wozniacki, who brought in $6 million in endorsements, but $7 million in prize money.

In fact, the top six athletes on the list come from the world of tennis (Venus Williams comes in at #6), which says something about how female athletes in that sport are paid, both on and off the court. However, when you take a closer look at the list of highest paid male athletes, the pay discrepancy women have become all too familiar with comes into sharp focus.

In fact, the top 100 highest paid athletes in the world, according to annual data obtained by Forbes, are men. Boxer Floyd Mayweather tops the list with $285 million. And while Williams’ recent salary may look different than it has in the past (when playing full time in 2016-17, she earned $27 million), it seems utterly ridiculous that she would be the only woman close to making the list in any given year. Perhaps the most direct comparison can be made to Roger Federer, whose earnings over the past year topped $77 million and landed him at #7 on the Forbes‘ list.

Of course, these are all enormous sums of money that most of us can only dream of—but the fundamental problem of pay inequality remains. Even for the G.O.A.T.

Forbes Addressed the Lack of Diversity on Its Highest-Paid Actresses List


2017 has been a good year for diversity in film across the board. Moonlight won the Academy Award for Best Picture; Jordan Peele’s directorial debut Get Out is the most profitable film of the year; and Girls Trip, a film starring four women of color, was the surprise hit of the summer. That being said, we still have a long way to go. Yes, we’ve made progress, but the majority of speaking roles in major motion pictures still go to white performers—specifically, white men.

And this explains why there are no women of color in the top 10 of Forbes magazine’s highest-paid actresses list this year. The publication released its annual list earlier this week, and people were quick to notice the lack of diversity. Check it out for yourself, below:

  1. Emma Stone—$26 million

  2. Jennifer Aniston—$25.5 million

  3. Jennifer Lawrence—$24 million

  4. Melissa McCarthy—$18 million

  5. Mila Kunis—$15.5 million

  6. Emma Watson—$14 million

  7. Charlize Theron—$14 million

  8. Cate Blanchett—$12 million

  9. Julia Roberts—$12 million

  10. Amy Adams—$11.5 million

Stone getting the top spot this year is a no-brainer; her performance in La La Land earned her the Academy Award for Best Actress. Jennifer Aniston, Jennifer Lawrence, and Melissa McCarthy prove time and time again to be bankable stars, so their appearance isn’t a surprise. And Emma Watson did Beauty and the Beast this year, so, again, duh. But no actresses of color? How is that possible?

Like we said earlier, it’s the lack of roles. Forbes associate editor Natalie Robehmed confirmed this in a statement released yesterday.

“The lack of diversity on the list comes down to roles: Only 28.3% of all speaking roles across formats go to characters from underrepresented racial/ethnic groups, according to a 2016 study,” she said, Cosmo reports. “That means there are simply fewer characters—and fewer high-paying roles—written for women of color. When studios, directors and screenwriters begin creating more main characters for women of color in the types of big budget movies that pay huge upfront fees and backend profits, we’ll see more actors of color on the list.”

Hollywood doesn’t have any more excuses for ignoring this issue. Many studio executives, I believe, used to think films about women and people of color were niche—but Get Out and Girls Trip dispel that completely. These films make money—and people want to see them. It’s time for the industry to wake up.
