Michelle Williams Was Reportedly Paid Less Than $1,000 For Movie Reshoot—While Mark Wahlberg Made $1.5 Million


A new USA Today story released last night is reporting that Michelle Williams was less than $1000 to reshoot scenes for her Golden Globe-nominated performance in All the Money in the World while Mark Wahlberg received $1.5 million. And people are not pleased. Movie reshoots are not an uncommon practice and typically would not be a huge story, but in this case director Ridley Scott decided to remove Kevin Spacey from the film entirely and replace him with Christopher Plummer after sexual misconduct allegations surfaced about Spacey. This was all done incredibly quickly over Thanksgiving in order to make the film’s original release date.

Scott told USA Today in December that “The whole reshoot was — in normal terms was expensive but not as expensive as you think. Because all of them, everyone did it for nothing…No, they all came in free. Christopher had to get paid. But Michelle, no. Me, no.” (The crew, however, was paid.) Williams herself previously told the paper, “I said I’d be wherever they needed me, whenever they needed me. And they could have my salary, they could have my holiday, whatever they wanted. Because I appreciated so much that they were making this massive effort.” But now reporters say that they discovered Wahlberg’s team actually negotiated a $1.5 million salary for the extra time on the job. Making it all the more complicated, the two actors are both represented by the same agency, WME.

Twitter—including Williams’ bestie Busy Phillips and Jessica Chastain—exploded with outrage on Williams’ behalf as soon as the story was published, calling out the pay gap but also that she was willing to do whatever it took to remove Spacey from the film while Wahlberg saw the moment as a cash grab. Talk about not reading the room, right?

While Williams has not commented directly on this story, she has played an active role in the Time’s Up initiative and brought #MeToo founder Tarana Burke as her date to the Golden Globes. Wahlberg has also not commented, but public opinion does not seem to be on his side. Even if there are complicated contract technicalities that somehow make this more than a gender pay issue, it’s not a great look right now to be asking for more money when so many others were simply dedicated to getting an alleged serial abuser out of the film. Could a donation to Time’s Up be in his future?

Paris Hilton's $2 Million Engagement Ring Is a Sight to Behold


Just a few days ago, heiress-turned-reality-star-turned-DJ-turned-perfumer Paris Hilton announced that Chris Zylka had proposed, and that she “said Yas.” You hardly needed Instagram’s zoom feature to get a look at the engagement ring: It’s as sparkly and over-the-top as Hilton’s most iconic fashion. (We’re talking about the woman who pioneered the silver party dress and bedazzled sweatsuits in the early-aughts, after all.) Still, Hilton has been making sure we give the diamond ring the attention it deserves by posting multiple shots of it on social media.

According to People, Hilton’s engagement ring is valued at nearly $2 million, and features a 20-carat pear-shaped diamond. (For comparison: The cushion-cut diamond ring Kanye West gave Kim Kardashian in 2013, which is also estimated to be worth $2 million, was 15 carats.) The center stone is set in a platinum band decked with an additional two carats of diamonds.

Hilton’s new fiancé helped celebrity jeweler Michael Green design the ring, per People, and it came together in only two days. The pear-shaped diamond was Zylka’s idea, inspired by another massive rock in the Hilton family: a ring worn by Paris’s mother.

“The ring was so gorgeous and sparkling,” Hilton told People after announcing the engagement. “I was shaking as I put it on. It is the most beautiful ring that I have ever seen!”

Sentimental though the design may be, it’s also just plain attention-getting. And true to most OTT celebrity engagement rings, Twitter users had a lot of thoughts concerning Hilton’s new bling. As one tweet put it,”Paris Hilton’s engagement ring is bigger and brighter than my future.” (Which, same.)

If Hilton’s sparkler reminds you of rapper Cardi B.’s similarly massive engagement ring, you’re not alone. It’s true that both jewels are large, teardrop-shaped, and beyond sparkly. But Paris had pretty much the best response to all comparisons (and to any accusations of copying): “Our future hubby’s obviously both have amazing & similar taste,” she tweeted in reply to a side-by-side edit of their two rings.

“#RingGoals” definitely applies, Paris—even if it calls for fingerless gloves in the snow.

Jennifer Lopez Is Donating $1 Million to Help Puerto Rico Hurricane Victims


Amid the dizzying series of natural disasters to occur over the past few weeks was Hurricane Maria, a Category 4 storm that left all of Puerto Rico without power, potentially for months. It’s killed at least 24 people, and it still continues to damage infrastructure throughout the region as a Category 2 hurricane. To help the victims attempting to rebuild their lives and communities, Jennifer Lopez is donating $1 million brought in by her recent Las Vegas concerts to Hurricane Maria relief.

“Given the loss and devastation, we need to pay attention to urgently support Puerto Rico and the Caribbean with donations and contributions,” she announced in a press conference with New York Governor Andrew Cuomo on Sunday. “Alex Rodriguez and I, who are both New Yorkers, are using all our resources and relationships in entertainment, sports, and business to garner support for Puerto Rico and the Caribbean. … We are working day and night to identify the needs.”

The singer and actress, who is of Puerto Rican descent, shared that she herself has family in Puerto Rico that she still hasn’t heard from.

As co-chair of the Empire State Relief & Recovery Effort, J.Lo has teamed up with her ex, Marc Anthony, and other celebrities to help the recent victims of Mexico’s earthquakes and the Caribbean’s hurricanes. Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban and player J.J. Barea have organized two airplanes full of supplies. The New York Yankees and Major League Baseball have also promised to contribute.

Earlier, in an Instagram post, J.Lo urged fans to donate to Puerto Rico First Lady Beatriz Areizaga’s United for Puerto Rico relief fund. “The devastation is beyond belief,” she said. “Today, Puerto Rico needs our help.”

Donald Trump Donates $1 Million to Hurricane Harvey Relief Efforts

With the current White House administration plaguing us by near-constant disarray and destruction, it’s with great surprise that we put forth some not-miserable news about President Donald Trump.

This afternoon White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders relayed the message that Trump will be donating approximately $1 million of his own money to aid the relief efforts brought forth by catastrophic Hurricane Harvey—something that Democrats and Republicans can both agree is a noble deed. Per CNBC, Huckabee Sanders said Trump hasn’t decided which specific organization he’ll be donating to, and he actually told Huckabee Sanders to ask the reporters at today’s press briefing to share their charity recommendations, due to these reporters being “very good at research,” according to The Hill.

“As I said, he’ll pledge probably $1 million of his own personal money to help the people of both Texas and Louisiana,” Huckabee Sanders explained. “He would like to join in the efforts that a lot of people we have seen across the country do.” Other prominent figures who’ve donated $1 million to charities supporting Hurricane Harvey victims include Leonardo DiCaprio and Sandra Bullock, while other celebrities, including the Kardashian family, Jennifer Lopez, Miley Cyrus, and Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson, have also pledged significant donations.

The news of Trump’s generous donation comes after a rocky few days for the President and his wife, Melania. The couple visited Corpus Christi, Texas, on Tuesday, a city hit badly by the hurricane, where the Commander in Chief drew ire for not witnessing much of the devastation firsthand, joking about the name Harvey, and boasting about the size of the crowd that met him. (Melania’s choice in outfit didn’t exactly help matters, either.) CNBC also notes that the First Couple will travel to the affected areas of Houston and Lake Charles, Louisiana, in a matter of days, although the itinerary has yet to be finalized.

Taylor Swift Reportedly Lounged in $10 Million Worth of Diamonds in the 'Look What You Made Me Do' Video


Hey, did you know that Taylor Swift released a new music video? Well, did you know that in said music video, she takes a rather uncomfortable-looking but unquestionably lavish bath in a tub filled with what Page Six is reporting to be $10 million-worth of diamonds?

Early on in the “Look What You Made Me Do” video, Swift is seen lounging back in a tub filled to the brim not with a soothing bubble bath, but rather countless jewels—necklaces, rings, bracelets, you name it! And though at first, many focused on the single dollar bill that’s pictured laying among the diamonds (an inferred reference to the symbolic settlement she received for her recent sexual assault case), Page Six suggests that the rest of the stage props used to set the scene were considerably pricier. The total value of Swift’s not-so-casual soak is actually estimated to be a cool $10 million.

The bling shown in the bathtub was sourced from famed celebrity jeweler Neil Lane‘s vault, according to Page Six—and, unsurprisingly, required a lot of security monitoring. Hey, better safe than sorry—did you see how many Taylors there were in that video? Plus, they proved they were perfectly capable of staging a heist…

Uber Is Donating $1.2 Million to Girls Who Code


Proving it’s serious about promoting gender diversity in tech, Uber is moving forward with their multi-year partnership with Girls Who Code and giving the nonprofit a $1.2 million grant to help make their vision—closing tech’s gender gap—a reality.

In recent months, the ride-sharing company has been dogged by reports that it perpetuated a hostile work environment that was riddled with allegations of sexism and harassment. But the departure of numerous executives—including former CEO Travis Kalanick—and the introduction of tech dynamo Bozoma Saint John as the new chief brand office indicated the company was eager to make a change.

And, following the release of its first diversity report in March, Uber vowed to donate $3 million to organizations dedicated to closing tech’s gender gap and planned to distribute these funds within a three-year time period. The Girls Who Code donation is part of this endeavor; over the next three years, the organization expects that the Uber investment will help teach over 60,000 girls the skills they need to break into the tech world.

Topping off the partnership, Saint John will be joining the Girls Who Code board of directors—though the specifics of her role within the nonprofit are still being worked out. “Right now, my duties are quite broad, and I think they’re more philosophical in nature—inspiring and ensuring the success of girls who want to learn these technical skills,” she told TechCrunch. Still, Saint John wants to be an example for young girls who want to start coding and give them any and all support they need.

“Now more than ever it’s important to see strong female leadership in the tech industry,” Reshma Saujani, Girls Who Code’s CEO and founder, told The Verge. “Bozoma exemplifies this.”
