An All-Female Marine Platoon Will Finally Train Alongside Men at Boot Camp

In an historic first for the U.S. Marine Corps, women will be able to train alongside men during boot camp. On Friday, a platoon of about 50 female marines began training side-by-side with the men at the traditionally all-male battalion at a facility in Parris Island, South Carolina. About 300 recruits are participating in this groundbreaking session, according to NBC News.

But before we pop a cork for this step towards gender equality, we have to take into account that this decision doesn’t totally reflect a shift in the Marine Corps’ philosophy going forward. Instead, according to NBC News, as well as a source cited by the New York Times, they only integrated the male and female marines for “training efficiency.”

“A lack of female recruits during the winter training cycle made it more practical to shut down the all-female battalion at Parris Island and roll the remaining 50 women into a male battalion,” the Times wrote, citing the official, who remained anonymous because they weren’t authorized to speak publicly. According to NBC and the Times, recruits will still be trained by instructors of their own gender, despite the integration, and women will live on a separate floor in the barracks.

The Marine Corps’ gender segregation has long been controversial. As Glamour wrote in in September 2017, “Officials have often argued that women and men must be separated during the training process so that women can “become more physically competitive before joining their male counterparts.”

Because only 8.4 percent of Marines are women (the lowest percentage among all the branches of the military), Marine Corps leaders have said that an all-female training environment could provide them with the support they need during the early stages of service. However, others are now changing their tune and suggesting that the separation of men and women prevents male recruits from establishing good relationships with their fellow female Marines. By changing the early training process, it could foster more respect for women and help change the problematic culture that pervades the current Marine structure.”

Ret. Army Col. Ellen Haring, who is advocate for the women in the military and the CEO of Service Women’s Action Network, pointed out in a statement to NBC News that all other military services have coed training units—and have for years.

“The Marine Corps’ recent announcement that it would integrate an all-female platoon within a company of all-male platoons on a trial basis comes decades after all of the other Services integrated all of their basic training units,” she wrote in her statement. “After reviewing training data in the 1990s both the Army and the Navy found that integrating basic training units improved performance on a number of measures.”

She went on to say that her organization has, “long advocated for fully integrated boot camp in the Marine Corps, including through pending federal litigation alleging that sex segregated training violates the constitutional guarantee of equal protection.”

But there’s still some hope that this training can lead to larger change: According to the corps, they will evaluate the training results after the 13-week session.

You Need to Watch the New Men in Black International Trailer Just for Tessa Thompson's Suits

Hollywood loves a franchise reboot, but it can make the box office feel a little repetitive. I mean, just because we already know and a universe doesn’t mean we need to revisit it every five to ten years. But I have a strong feeling that Men in Black International, which comes out this summer, will be different—and for one very specific reason: Tessa Thompson in suits. (Chris Hemsworth is there, too, I guess.)

Thompson and Hemsworth play agents of the Men in Black’s international operations, working alongside Emma Thompson and Liam Neeson to monitor and police alien activity on Earth. (Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones, though alluded to, are nowhere to be seen.) The latest installment of the beloved franchise is set primarily in the U.K. and Morocco—but despite the new backdrop, the uniform remains the same. And my goodness, do they look great in those signature black suits.

The first trailer for Men in Black International just dropped, and it’s pretty much a perfect two-and-a-half minutes. I mean, it starts with Thompson walking into the MIB offices in New York wearing a skirt suit, greeted by the other Thompson in a skirt suit. Emma’s character asks, “You really think a black suit is going to solve all your problems?” Tessa perfectly answers, “No, but it looks damn good on you.” I had to pause for a brief shrieking break.

But then—then—you hear, “Oh, snap!” Which signals the beginning of Fergie’s iconic 2006 hit, “London Bridge.” Because they’re going to London. Get it? Another pause for shrieking. Like I said, this trailer is perfect.

You can watch the whole clip above, which sets the scene for a secret global mission that Thompson and Hemsworth, the best celebrity duo to be brought together by the Hollywood machine since Tiffany Haddish and Maya Rudolph at the Oscars, will undertake on the big screen next summer. And I’m beyond ready for two hours of watching them look amazing in suits, preferably in IMAX quality.

Because, hi…

Hello…

I see you…

Men Are Pressuring Cardi B to Forgive Offset—and It Needs to Stop

This past weekend, Cardi B should have been celebrating one of the biggest moments of her career: She’s the first woman ever to headline Rolling Loud, the largest hip-hop festival in the world.

Instead, her estranged husband, Offset, crashed her performance and begged her to take him back in front of thousands of people—but this literal public display of affection did not go well. Cardi was clearly uncomfortable in the moment, and later posted on social media to make it clear that she needs time and privacy. (Something Offset did not respect, FWIW.)

It was an understandable response given their relationship has been plagued by rumors of his infidelity since before the couple even married. And yet, rappers like T.I., 21 Savage, 50 Cent, and The Game have all taken it upon themselves to chime in on Cardi and Offset’s relationship, telling Cardi she should forgive her husband.

“Now, I don’t know all the dynamics between you two nor does anyone else on the Internet, but what I do know is you guys look great together,” The Game said on Instagram, according to Rolling Stone. “It’s only right you guys reunite immediately for the good of you guys family unit.”

“Take Offset back Cardi B,” T.I. wrote on social media. “Ain’t nobody perfect.” 50 Cent commented on a post of Cardi’s, telling her to go “home” to her ex. “No Divorce,” he added. “Ok chill out.”

Offset was the one who broke his vows, but somehow it’s up to Cardi to do the emotional labor of putting it back together? I call bullshit. His appearance at Rolling Loud was both unjustified and unwelcomed—and I’d go so far as to call it manipulative and toxic. By trying to publicly pressure Cardi into forgiveness, Offset’s shifted the focus from how he cheated to the extremes he’ll go to win back her love. But not only is this unfair to Cardi—the responsibility of their future now rests squarely on her shoulders—it’s potentially harmful to her career. After all, who will remember Cardi’s Rolling Loud performance as a historic moment for black women now?

I take issue with the (male) celebrities’ support for Offset because it speaks to how black women are often treated in relationships, and it reinforces the belief that we have to suffer if we want to be loved. The “ride or die” trope, which posits that women are supposed to stick by their significant other regardless of their behavior, has been prevalent in our culture for decades. Black women are never afforded to be anything but loyal in romantic relationships, while black men’s cheating is often considered a minor indiscretion or growing pain. Just look at Jay Z and Beyoncé: Lemonade is a powerful album about her anger over his infidelity, but she ultimately stands by her man; meanwhile, on 4:44 Jay Z offers up lyrics like, “I apologize, often womanize. Took for my child to be born [to] see through a woman’s eyes.”

Our entire existence is constantly being assessed by our proximity to men. When we wear too much makeup, we’re trying too hard to attract a partner. But if we don’t wear enough, we’ll never get one. When we want our partner to be ambitious, we’re a gold digger. When we distance ourselves from an unhealthy relationship, we’re selfish and destroying our family. This pattern is not just frustrating—it’s potentially dangerous. Take singer-songwriter Kehlani, who was accused of cheating on her boyfriend Kyrie Irving last year; the subsequent flood of social media was so horrible that she was hospitalized after a suicide attempt. In the U.S., black women face higher rates of domestic violence than white women.

The point is, whatever Cardi decides—whether it’s to leave Offset or to reconcile with him—that’s a decision she needs to make alone. She can’t pacify the court of public opinion, but she can declare her worth as a black woman.

Female-Led Films Earn More Than Ones Starring Men, According to a New Study

What were some of your favorite movies of the past few years? Wonder Woman? Ocean’s 8? Maybe A Simple Favor? Note how all are female-led films—and you’re not alone in loving them.

According to a new study by the Creative Arts Agency and the digital strategist shift7, the top movies from 2014 to 2017 starring women earned more than those led by their male counterparts. And this was across the board: for movies that were made for less than $10 million (indies) or for films over $100 million (blockbusters).

So what does that actually mean? That movies starring women are good for business. Plain and simple.

Of course we didn’t need a survey to tell us that. All we have to do is look at the box office, where women have been killing it. Take some of the best and buzziest of the past year. Whether it was this summer’s boundary pushing rom-com Crazy Rich Asians, the Oscar favorite A Star Is Born, or the impossibly fun Mama Mia! Here We Go Again, women dominated. And made bank.

Everett

This survey doesn’t even account for all the other places we watch movies outside of the theater, like Netflix. This summer the streaming service helped revitalize the romantic comedy genre by releasing several female-driven rom-coms, including everyone’s favorites To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, Set It Up, and Sierra Burgess Is a Loser. These movies proved that people truly want to watch movies about women—no matter the platform.

Netflix

CAA’s study also found that films that passed the Bechdel test—which measures where two female characters have a conversation about something other than a man—outperformed those that failed it. But in spite of this, women accounted for only around a quarter of sole protagonists in the top 2017 films and only played about a third of major characters.

So listen up, Hollywood: Not only are women good for business—we mean business.

Taylor Swift's Political Post Has Really, Really Upset Conservative Men

Last night, Taylor Swift made a rare political statement on Instagram. In it, she endorsed the Democratic candidate for Tennessee’s congressional race, Phil Bredesen, and, in turn, denounced the Republican candidate, Marsha Blackburn. Unsurprisingly, it’s a move that’s upset many conservative men.

“What I used to love about Taylor Swift is she stayed away from politics,” Charlie Kirk, the founder and president of Turning Point USA, said on Fox & Friends today, before suggesting that Swift didn’t actually write her Bredesen endorsement and that she had been fed false information. And according to The Daily Beast, members of conservative 4chan chatrooms are calling Swift’s pro-Bredesen statement “traitorous” and posting disturbing memes of the singer burning.

Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee (R) is also giving his two-cents—particularly about Swift’s fans, who he seems to think are all under the age of 13. “So @taylorswift13 has every right to be political but it won’t impact election unless we allow 13 yr old girls to vote,” he wrote on Monday morning. “Still with #MarshaBlackburn.”

Huckabee has since received a flurry of responses taking him to task for his comment, including from Paramore’s Hayley Williams.

“And here we have a man in power mocking a woman’s value and impact out of what i can only assume is fear. not fear of an election result but fear of a powerful woman who’s power he now realizes he can not benefit from,” Williams wrote. “and who in their right mind underestimates a 13 year old girl anyway?!! who publicly mocks a woman’s political standings by dubbing an entire generation powerless? you don’t know the impact you have with your words… what fires you’ll start. use ‘em wisely.”

Some Twitter users, like Williams, criticized Huckabee for mocking 13-year-old girls. Others pointed out that, with Swift having debuted her first album in 2006, many of her fans are well within voting age.

Swift posted her message about the upcoming midterm elections on Sunday night, saying that she’s choosing to break her silence on politics due to “several events in my life and in the world in the past two years.”

“I believe in the fight for LGBTQ rights, and that any form of discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender is WRONG,” Swift wrote, in part. “I believe that the systemic racism we still see in this country towards people of color is terrifying, sickening and prevalent. I cannot vote for someone who will not be willing to fight for dignity for ALL Americans, no matter their skin color, gender or who they love.”

Donald Trump and His Son Think the #MeToo Era Is 'a Very Scary Time' for Men in America

As women rally and mobilize around survivors of sexual assault, and coming in a week that will see the one-year anniversary of the #MeToo Harvey Weinstein allegations, President Donald Trump said Tuesday that he’s highly concerned for the safety of America’s young men as he answered questions about the FBI inquiry into his Supreme Court pick, Brett Kavanaugh.

While en route to board Marine One, NBC National Correspondent Peter Alexander asked the president what message he had for both young men and women in America right now.

“Well, I’d say that it’s a very scary time for young men in America when you can be guilty of something you may not be guilty of,” Trump very quickly replied. “This is a very difficult time. What’s happening here has much more to do than even the appointment of a Supreme Court Justice. You could be somebody who was perfect your entire life and somebody could accuse you of something. Doesn’t necessarily have to be a woman, as everybody says, but somebody could accuse you of something and you’re automatically guilty. But in this realm, you’re truly guilty until proven innocent. That’s one of the very very bad things that’s taking place right now.”

According to a White House pool report, filed by Hunter Walker of Yahoo! News, Trump was then asked if he had a message for young women. Trump reportedly replied, “Women are doing great.”

Trump’s comments came just one day after a similar question was asked by the Daily Mail to his son, Donald Trump Jr.

“I’ve got boys, and I’ve got girls. And when I see what’s going on right now, it’s scary,” he told the outlet. When pressed on who he was more frightened for, he replied, “Right now, I’d say my sons.”

“For the people who are real victims of these things, when it is so obviously political in cases like this, it really diminishes the real claims.”

It should be noted that false reports count for between 2 and 10 percent of sexual assault allegations, according to the National Sexual Violence Resource Center. A sexual assault occurs every 98 seconds, and 90 percent of adult rape victims are female. In total, one out of every six American women has been the victim of sexual assault or rape in her lifetime.

It shouldn’t be surprising that Trump and his son would side with the accused, especially when you consider that 20 women have come forward with allegations that the president engaged in sexual misconduct.

But, it doesn’t make it any less shocking, especially when the numbers prove them wrong.
