Please Enjoy This Bizarre Video of Melania Trump Watching Ballerinas

When you’re the First Lady and you invite reporters to your home to tour your newly hung Christmas decorations, sometimes things can go awry. For instance, you might enter the White House Grand Foyer only to find your two visiting ballerinas have yet to finish their performance of Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker. Cursing this departure from your planned morning itinerary, you find yourself standing there, awkwardly plotting your next move. Heaven knows crossing that dance floor would be a disaster, so you wait patiently for the dancers to finish.

For some First Ladies, they’d make the most of watching the ballerinas from a distance that can only be described as thisclose and view it with nothing but wide-eyed wonder. For the always inscrutable Melania Trump, it was a moment to stand conspicuously still, emoting absolutely nothing, as the dancers twirled through a beloved holiday classic.

Of course, Melania is known for her stoic demeanor and maybe standing in the White House entryway, stone-faced with her arms at her side, was all part of her scheduled programming. But it did make for some truly strange visuals—ones that The Hill’s Jody Kurtz naturally captured on video and shared on Twitter.

The First Lady seemed blissfully unaware of how bizarre she looked standing there and eventually even cracked a smile. And despite the somber kickoff to the White House Christmas decorations tour, Melania really is excited about the forthcoming holidays.

“The President, Barron, and I are very excited for our first Christmas in the White House,” the First Lady said in a statement. “As with many families across the country, holiday traditions are very important to us. I hope when visiting the People’s House this year, visitors will get a sense of being home for the holidays. On behalf of my husband and Barron, I want to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and joyous holiday season.”

Melania Trump Isn't Too Thrilled About Being First Lady, According to a New Report

In the roughly ten months since her husband took office, it seems that no one has been subject to more palace intrigue than First Lady Melania Trump. Whether she’s swatting her husband’s hand away, launching an anti-cyberbullying initiative while the President blasts members of his own party on Twitter, or inspiring conspiracy theories about a supposed body double that stands in her place, there’s been plenty of fodder for those who love speculating about the First Lady’s life. And now, according to a new report from Vanity Fair, there’s more fuel to add to the “Melania doesn’t like being First Lady” fire—and several sources close to the Trumps have revealed that she isn’t particularly keen on her new life.

As VF‘s Sarah Ellison reports, it was Melania who pushed Donald to run in 2016 after he had toyed with the idea in 2012. But this didn’t stem from any real desire for her husband to enter politics; rather, it was born more from her frustration with his back and forth about a presidential bid. And as Ellison puts it, “there may never have been a First Lady less prepared for or suited to the role.

“This isn’t something she wanted and it isn’t something he ever thought he’d win,” a longtime friend of the family told the magazine. “She didn’t want this come hell or high water. I don’t think she thought it was going to happen.”

And now that Melania has inherited the East Wing of the White House—where the First Lady and her staff members are customarily based—her less-than-enthusiastic view of the role is apparent. She has just nine staffers—half the number of employees that both Michelle Obama and Laura Bush had. During the transition between Barack Obama and Donald Trump, East Wing workers “had very little to do.” And Melania and her son Barron didn’t actually move into the White House until June of this year—making her the first First Lady in the country’s history to put off moving down to Washington.

Those close to Melania, however, say that she’s “slowly warming to the job” and CNN’s Kate Bennett recently told The Daily Front Row that, despite seeming quiet and reserved, the First Lady “connects well and seems to come alive in a joyful way” whenever she spends time with children.

Still, there’s plenty of chatter surrounding Melania’s relationship with her husband. Per VF, Melania’s friends are “divided” when it comes to her feelings toward her husband—with the infamous hand swatting and her apparent discomfort while dancing with him at the inaugural balls not reflecting too favorably on their relationship as a whole. As one pal put it, it’s “old news” that Melania and Donald basically live separate lives.

But others have refuted these assertions. As one of the President’s oldest friends put it, “The one who has the most control over Donald is Melania, 100 percent…He listens to her and adores her.”

As for what the First Lady herself thinks of all this, she’s remained characteristically silent; both she and her press secretary declined to be interviewed by Vanity Fair.

Watch as a Teen Freaks Out Over Meeting a K-Pop Star—and Ignores Melania Trump

By all accounts, it seems like First Lady Melania Trump is having the time of her life on her state trip to Asia. This week alone, she’s stopped by Mikimoto to tour the flagship store of the iconic pearl retailer, shared tea and wine with Japanese First Lady Akie Abe, and practiced her calligraphy with fourth graders at Kyobashi Tsukiji Elementary School.

On Tuesday, the whirlwind tour continued and the First Lady ventured onward to South Korea to speak at a state-sponsored event for the forthcoming 2018 Winter Olympics. Posing alongside a group of teenage girls, Trump seemed relaxed and cheerful as she chatted with the teens (as CNN reporter Kate Bennett recently told The Daily Front Row, Melania “connects well and seems to come alive in a joyful way” when she’s spending time with kids).

As the teens stood beside the First Lady, one of the girls began screaming in excitement. Trump smiled kindly at the girl then looked over her shoulder and realized what prompted the reaction: Korean pop star and actor Choi Min-ho was standing right beside her. (It was basically the First Lady equivalent at waving at someone on the street, then realizing they’re waving at someone behind you.)

When the rest of the teens realized who else was there with them, they too began screaming and clapping. Despite some perceived awkwardness, Melania stayed in good spirits, laughing and smiling alongside the teens.

Such is the case with everything related to the First Family, Twitter had plenty of thoughts on the incident and wasted no time sharing them with the world.

Melania Trump’s Spokesperson Slams Ivana Trump’s Claim That She Is the First Lady

PHOTO: CBS Sunday Morning

In a recent interview with Good Morning America, President Donald Trump‘s ex-wife Ivana Trump sat down to discuss her new book, Raising Trump, out tomorrow. During the interview she made it clear that she’s still on good terms with the President. She even joked at one point that despite their divorce, she is the true First Lady of the United States.

The mother of Donald Jr., Eric, and Ivanka Trump has been divorced from the president since 1992, yet she confirmed that she has a “direct number” to the White House and speaks to the President every few weeks. “I [don’t] really want to call him there, because Melania is there,” Ivana said during the interview. “And I don’t want to cause any kind of jealousy or something like that, because I’m basically first Trump wife. OK? I’m First Lady.”

This did not go over well with the current FLOTUS and her staff. Melania Trump‘s communications director, Stephanie Grisham, responded to Ivana’s claim with this statement—and she did not hold back:

“Mrs. Trump has made the White House a home for Barron and the President. She loves living in Washington, D.C., and is honored by her role as First Lady of the United States. She plans to use her title and role to help children, not sell books. There is clearly no substance to this statement from an ex. Unfortunately only attention-seeking and self-serving noise.”

While Melania Trump’s statement suggests she and Ivana won’t be sitting down for a friendly brunch anytime soon, they’re still a whole lot more civilized than Trump himself. The President spent the weekend insulting retiring Tennessee Senator Bob Corker and attacking NFL players for kneeling during the national anthem.

Melania Trump Mocked by Internet for Wearing Sunglasses at Night

When Melania Trump makes headlines, it’s typically for one of two reasons: one, for her deftly choreographed evasions of Donald Trump’s hand-holding attempts, and two, for her incongruous fashion choices. Late Wednesday night, the First Lady returned from a trip to Puerto Rico and Las Vegas with her husband. As the pair were most definitely holding hands, the eagle-eyed critics on Twitter seized on another detail: her sunglasses.

As Fox News puts it, “The eyewear quickly became the focal point for Twitter users who pointed out that the sun was not out.”

Inquiring minds demanded to know why she was wearing sunglasses at night—a somewhat bombastic move usually reserved for Hollywood stars—and the theories began pouring in.

“I wonder if Melania Trump wears big sunglasses in public so no one can see her rolling her eyes at the B.S. her hubby says,” wrote @wesleysmom28. Ice cold, Wesley’s mom.

“Melania was hoping her sunglasses were so big that people wouldn’t recognize her…” proposed @HeathRaleigh, in reference to the time Donald Trump appeared not to recognize his wife, who was standing right next to him, because she was wearing sunglasses and a baseball cap.

Others made oblique references to her other instances of inappropriate wardrobe choices.

“I expect melania to come out with her own line of disaster wear complete with hat and sunglasses,” said @liberalchik, bringing to mind the time the FLOTUS wore stilettos and sunglasses to Houston after Hurricane Harvey.

Yet others pleaded with her to cease this behavior immediately, some because they felt the sunglasses rendered her incapable of conveying compassion or warmth.

This isn’t the first time Melania Trump has gotten flak for her unusual fashion choices. Recently, the Italian-made dress she wore during Trump’s speech about American labor was eviscerated on Twitter, and later, an expensive outfit she wore during a United Nations address was called out for being tone-deaf. And we doubt it will be the last time.

Twitter Is Dragging Melania Trump's $1,380 Gardening Shirt

PHOTO: Win McNamee/Getty Images

First Lady Melania Trump harvested the White House vegetable garden on Friday with some help from the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Washington. To do so, she wore a $1,380 Balmain shirt—and Twitter realllllly had a problem with it.

Needless to say, a $1,380 shirt isn’t the most practical thing to be digging around in the dirt in—and Trump was, in fact, doing some work in the garden Michelle Obama started. Most of us might opt for an old T-shirt or something that has a few coffee stains down the front. But she’s a First Lady, and so her fashion choices will always be up for endless analyzation and critique.

Of course, the Internet hasn’t been too happy with a few of her looks lately: there was the $2,950 Delpozo dress she wore to give a speech about childhood hunger to the United Nations General Assembly, which Twitter was quick to point out came off as a little tone-deaf. And just a few weeks ago, Trump was criticized for wearing heels en route to Houston after Hurricane Harvey it (Manolo Blahniks, no less).

Anyway, here is the shirt and a ripe-looking green pepper:

It’s worth pointing out that, while, yes, a $1,380 shirt errs on the side of being ridiculous, especially for gardening, the spouses of world leaders aren’t exactly known for shopping at Old Navy or Target, or, heck, even J. Crew—until Obama came along. To some degree, designer fashion is de rigueur if you’re married to someone who contributes, for better or worse, to running the world—and it’s not fair to drag Trump just for sticking to the dress code, however crazy it might seem to some of us mortals (for many of us, her shirt is a month or two of rent). At the same time, Obama wasn’t immune herself to designer duds in the dirt: she wore some Jimmy Choos as she broke ground on the garden.

That brings us to Twitter’s take on it. Kate Bennett, a CNN reporter opened the can of worms:

And then others chimed in with a whole range of opinions:

Bennett had a final response to the kerfluffle:

So, yes: First Ladies traditionally wear expensive things, and taxpayers don’t contribute to their wardrobe—so maybe it’s best to let them wear what they want? Overdressing for the garden isn’t and shouldn’t be a partisan issue, though she’s unlikely to score relatability points.
