Bride Refuses to Hire Gay Makeup Artist — See the Viral Screenshots


“I still have more questions. How can you be a latina woman and be gay? You do know being gay is a sin correct,” the bride says, making assumptions about Cardenas’s beliefs. “I will pray for you my friend. I’m sorry that you’ve chosen a path that’s going to send you straight to hell. I think you do beautiful makeup but i just can’t have someone who’s gay being apart of my special day. The wedding is in a church and i don’t want you walking into my church.”

As if that weren’t bad enough, the bride ignorantly suggests that if Cardenas suddenly decides to stop being a lesbian, she’ll hire her, saying, “If you at any chance change your mind about being gay let me know please so i can book you.”

Words like this would be hurtful to anyone who doesn’t identify as straight, but they were especially painful to Cardenas, who told me she had only just recently come out. “I wanted to post [this conversation] for my friends and family because about a month and a half ago, I came out to everyone on social media. I was tired of hiding who I was. And when I had such a positive reaction to me sharing who I was I felt like everyone just needed a little taste of my reality,” she tells Allure, explaining that she’s struggled with facing acceptance in her small Texas town.

The response she’s gotten to the screenshots has been heartening — sympathy, support, love, and a new understanding. “So many friends and family or just strangers had no idea that people could actually be like this. I wanted to share to bring some light on the subject because it’s from someone they know and love,” Cardenas tells Allure. “I’ve been getting such a positive response, so much love and support, whether it be from potential clients, strangers, or someone who’s struggling with their own story. Of course, I have my fair share of awful things still being said to me. I have to brush that aside and focus on the positive.”

In fact, Cardenas tells Allure that even the bride-to-be has reached out after the conversation went viral. “She apologized, but told me it was her wedding and her choice to choose who she wanted doing makeup and hair, and that her beliefs shouldn’t have hurt my feelings,” Cardenas explains. And then, displaying the kind of tolerance Cardenas herself deserves, she says, “I understand where she’s coming from. I just wish she would have been a little nicer about it.”

How to Wear White Eyeliner – Summer 2019's Biggest Makeup Trend


I want to be the person who’s always trying new makeup trends. It’s so easy to convince myself that I’ll wear the neon pink eyeshadow, metallic lipgloss, or extreme contour that I’ve hoarded in my apartment. But the truth is, no matter how appealing a trend, I rarely break free from my daily look of natural skin, winged eyeliner, and a nude lip.

So imagine my delight when I noticed a trend on Instagram that was totally within my wheelhouse. Every time I opened the app, white liquid eyeliner, usually applied in a bold wing, was popping up on celebrities and influencers. It even made its way onto the Pose season two promos.

Graphic, ’60s inspired eyeliner has been having a moment for a while now, but it’s usually done in a bright neon or creamy pastel. White is a refreshing contrast. In art, white is the absence of color, so it’s almost like an anti-eyeliner. It still makes a big statement, but because it’s a neutral, it feels a little more approachable, and you don’t have to worry about matching other makeup or your outfit. It’s crisp and graphic like a classic white shirt, but doesn’t have the vintage connotations that black does. Plus, it will really pop with a (safe) summer tan.

As someone who has a cat eye down pat and is terrified of wearing color on my eyes (plus has no idea how to blend eyeshadow), this is the perfect trend for me. It’s a fun way to switch up my makeup and make me feel like part of the it-crowd without stepping too far outside of my comfort zone. So I challenged myself to try the trend for a week.

Since I’m so comfortable in a cat eye, I figured white eyeliner would be an easy switch. I was wrong. While a swipe of black eyeliner instantly adds definition to my eyes and wakes up my whole face, I found white did the opposite. It made me look a little sleepy and washed out, almost like a haunted doll which is….not the look I’m going for. The first time I tried it out, it stayed on my face for a total of 15 minutes before I wiped it off. Granted, I was having a terrible skin day and just not feeling myself overall, so I think I wanted to avoid any makeup that would call attention to myself. I gave it a shot the next night and went much harder on my foundation, which definitely helped me feel less like a drowned rat. I wore it out to a party and got several compliments, but still didn’t feel 100 percent comfortable in it.

Best Makeup Mirror With Lights of 2019 – Riki Loves Riki Review


As much as I admittedly love looking into reflective surfaces, I’ve always thought they’re all the same. I can do my makeup just fine using the two large mirrors currently taking up real estate in my room, the selfie camera on my phone, or even the shiny windows I walk past on a daily basis (although the owner and patrons of my neighborhood café might beg to differ on that one). It could be argued that the last thing I need is a mirror that ups the extra factor by framing my face in a rectangle of twinkling lights. But having finally caved and tried it out, I now realize that I was wrong. Goodbye to that aforementioned list because I have something way better now.

In the world of makeup mirrors with lights, options abound. You can get versions that switch between different types of lighting, from fluorescent to evening. You can go for tiny handheld options or ones that stretch from floor to ceiling, if you’re Kylie Jenner. For more practical purposes, I gravitated to the one that repeatedly showed up on my Instagram feed: the Riki Loves Riki Skinny Lighted Mini Vanity Mirror. Fans include celebrity makeup artists and YouTubers alike—and I can easily get on board with anything both Huda Kattan and Jennifer Lopez use.

According to cofounder Wanchen Kaiser, Riki Loves Riki’s range of mirrors were inspired by sister brand Glamcor, which specializes in pro-grade lighting. These aren’t the lamps you buy for your bedside table, more like the ones you’ll spot in the kits of makeup artists, tattoo artists, and estheticians. (Naturally, YouTubers are also fans.)

“We started working on the concept of this super-bright portable mirror by using Glamcor lighting technology,” says Kaiser. “It took us four years to finally make it perfect.” Kaiser says her company sources the best LED lights on the market to duplicate a color that is closest to daylight. This is crucial because daylight is usually the most accurate representation of what your makeup application actually looks like. I doubt I am the only one who has experienced the indignity of a smoky eye that looks pretty good in a dim bathroom, but morphs into a toddler’s finger painting attempts two steps out the door.

After extensive testing, I can confirm that if your makeup appears excellent in the glow of the Riki Skinny, it will appear equally (or even more) excellent in any other setting. It’s especially handy for things that are sometimes only revealed by photos—foundation shade mismatches, setting powder flashback, or eyeshadow that’s not adequately blended. Portability is also a big selling point for this model; it’s slimmer than a MacBook and comes with a folding stand and rechargeable battery.

That’s the practical aspect of the mirror. You may notice that it comes with buttons and attachments that far outnumber a single on/off switch. There are five stages of dimming you can cycle through, although I find that the lowest level is bright enough for my purposes—illuminating every detail of my face without being too harsh. There’s a separate 3x magnifying mirror you can clip on, a little intense for everyday purposes, but perfect for close-up tasks like applying lashes or performing extractions.

And—I’m not making this up, I promise—it has Bluetooth. Why? So you can place your phone in the included clip, mount it and turn the entire mirror into a giant, light-up selfie station. (There’s a camera button on the mirror for this express purpose.) For content creators, I’m guessing this makes a genius filming system, allowing them to house a phone tripod, lighting setup, and reference mirror in a single device. For me, it’s an excuse to take even more gratuitous photos of myself.

Selena Gomez's Cannes Makeup Had a Secret Nod to Miley Cyrus


Selena Gomez walked the famous Cannes Film Festival red carpet for the first time yesterday to promote her upcoming new movie, The Dead Don’t Die. From her white two-piece Louis Vuitton dress to some serious bling in the form of a Bulgari diamond necklace and ring, she looked incredible.

But what we really need to talk about is Gomez’s ridiculously good glam, specifically her makeup. The vibe was a modern take on Old Hollywood with a classic red lip and a cat-eye by makeup artist Hung Vanngo using Marc Jacobs Beauty. It also had a hidden nod to fellow former Disney star, Miley Cyrus. Vanngo used Le Marc Lip Crème Lipstick in Oh Miley 200 ($32), a strawberry red shade inspired by the singer, on Gomez to give her lips a pop of color.

That wasn’t even the only pop star connection with her look. Vanngo revealed that he also used the brand’s Youthquake Hydra-Full Retexturizing Gel Crème ($59), which was Lady Gaga‘s secret skin weapon during awards season and the Met Gala. (Gaga’s longtime makeup artist Sarah Tanno is an ambassador for the brand, so she got to test it out secretly for months before it hit shelves this month.)

Vanngo also used Accomplice Concealer & Touch-Up Stick in L23 ($32) and Accomplice Instant Blurring Beauty Powder in Siren 52 ($49) to create even more of a glow before adding O!Mega Bronzer Coconut Perfect Tan in Tan-Tastic! ($49) and Air Blush Soft Glow Duo in 506 Flesh & Fantasy ($42) for a touch of warmth.

And to balance Gomez’s bold red lip, Vanngo created a sparkly cat-eye. (Perhaps Taylor Swift was the inspiration?) Here’s how to re-create it for yourself.

First apply a light layer of See-quins Glam Glitter Eyeshadow in Flashlight ($28) to give your lids that glittery look. Next, use the Magic Marc’er Precision Pen Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner—inspired by calligraphy pens—in Blacquer ($30) to create a bold wing liner that emphasizes your eye shape. Then, finish with a few coats of Velvet Noir Major Volume Mascara ($26).

The final result? Flawless. If only a makeup look could win the Palme d’Or.
