Bombshell Costume Designer Colleen Atwood on What Makes a Signature Fox News Look


How much Fox News did you have to watch coming into this?

A lot. More than I’ve watched in my entire life. It was very compressed. You know, we had loops of it. You just kind of got used to it in that way, which was funny.

How would you describe the quintessential Fox News look—for women especially?

The look I was going for was a dress that’s body conscious just enough. It’s not too short, but short enough that when they sat down, you got a shot of someone’s leg. Necklines were inviting, but not obvious. It’s sort of like sexy without being obviously sexy, which Roger really understood—that it’s good to leave enough to the imagination, but suggest. That was where we went with it.

I love the scene where they go into the dressing room and you realize there’s a Fox News anchor uniform.

That came from a real picture that I saw, a real research picture of somebody in their office. It seems that those people don’t work in those clothes all day long, so that was sort of how they did it.

Do you have a favorite look or scene?

The scene in the first trailer of the three of them in the elevator is so powerful. I really like that a lot. And I think that the devastating scene of Margot and John is an incredible scene in the movie. You know, it’s a movie that’s not about clothes. They just have to be believable. So it’s not like I had a big costume moment in the movie, but I really enjoyed working on it.

Margot’s character goes through the biggest story arc with her character. Is there any way you translated that with her clothing?

I tried to. She starts as coming from the South, so I made wraparound dresses that kind of looked like what somebody who doesn’t know better thinks is really classy. Simple, younger things. And then, she’s a quick study, so when she looked around her and saw what everyone else was wearing, she gradually stepped it up. She always had the little slightly Christian vibe to it. There’s a modesty and restraint to her, and I think her performance reflects that. It helps make the moment that she [has with Ailes] even more horrible.

I’m curious with the shoes, was there a specific heel height or anything in sourcing those?

High. Nothing was under three inches, let’s put it that way. Margot’s had a slight platform, because she was standing next to two women who are six feet tall in their bare feet. Charlize and Nicole were in three-and-a-half inch, and Margot was probably in three-and-a-half inch but with an inch platform. They were in very high shoes, and they all wore them really bravely the whole time. Sometimes people are like, “Oh God, do I have to wear those?” But they were great. They went for it. They were so into it, and their support of each other was tremendous.

H&M x Giambattista Valli: Every Single Look in the Designer Collaboration


H&M announced its latest designer collaboration—with Italian couturier Giambattista Valli—in a somewhat unprecedented fashion: by having Kendall Jenner wear one of the pieces from its collection to the Cannes Film Festival in May. The model gave us a taste of what we could expect from the highly anticipated collection (bold colors, feminine details, tons of tulle) then, but now H&M is letting everyone start planning their shopping strategy for November 7 by unleashing the full lookbook.

Giambattista Valli x H&M spans womens wear, menswear, and accessories. And the couture-inspired pieces run the gamut, from ruffled blouses and tiered gowns to logo hoodies and beanies. The prices are equally varied, ranging from $17.99 to $649, according to Vogue. As these releases usually go, the collection will be made available at select H&M stores globally and on the retailer’s website starting today, November 7—and it’s already going fast.

Target Is Re-Releasing Its Best Designer Collaborations of All Time—See Every Single Look


Guard your credit card, because Target is gearing up to re-release some of its best, most sought-after designer collaborations from the last two decades.

In honor of 20 years of brand partnerships, Target is launching a sweeping, limited-edition 300-piece collection on September 14 that functions as a greatest hits compilation of its best designer pair-ups of all time. It’ll include a massive variety of clothing, accessories, and household items from Issac Mizrahi, Anna Sui, Lilly Pulitzer, Zac Posen, Missoni, Proenza Schouler, Rodarte, Jason Wu, 3.1 Phillip Lim, Altuzarra, and more. Pieces start at just $7 and go up to $160—oh, and this time, all women’s apparel will be available in sizes XS to 3X. Be warned: There’s a five-item limit per customer on this release.

Rick Gomez, Target’s executive vice president and chief marketing and digital officer, said in a press release that this collection is a nod to the company’s effort to bring designer items to everyday consumers. Its first capsule collection was with Mizrahi in 2003; it then ran a few more high-end partnerships before formally creating the Designer Collaborations program, which eventually featured the likes of Alexander McQueen, Jean Paul Gaultier, Peter Pilotto, among others.

“Two decades ago, when we first set out to make beautifully designed products affordable, we created a movement in retail and culture that proclaimed that design could be—and should be—for all,” he said. “This Anniversary Collection takes our guests on a nostalgic journey through our designer collaboration history where they can discover products that they’ll fall in love with all over again, or for some, for the very first time.”

Willa Ford: From ‘I Wanna Be Bad’ to Scott Disick’s Interior Designer


It sounds like the plot of a knock-off A Star Is Born, but Willa Ford‘s 2001 hit single “I Wanna Be Bad” stemmed from her being, well, bad. The then unknown singer tells me she was working with a record label at the time that asked her to make more “wholesome” music. She had other ideas.

“Everything I was writing was funky and, you know, like me,” Ford says. “I remember one day I was like, ‘I’m going to do the opposite of what they’re telling me.’ If somebody gives me an authority figure, I’m like, ‘Let me go the other way.'”

That’s when her “aha!” moment came. “I said [to my writing partners], ‘I want to write something where I just wanna be bad,'” Ford recalls. “And they were dying. They were like, ‘This is hilarious. The record label’s gonna kill us, but let’s do it.'”

“I Wanna Be Bad,” a stomping anthem with lyrics like, “I’m losing all my cool / I’m about to break the rules” was born. Ford says the record label liked the song but wanted a softer (read: cheesy) pre-chorus. But then a record executive from another label, Jason Flom, heard Ford’s original version and saw her potential. The rest is pop history: Flom signed Ford, and “I Wanna Be Bad” became a smash, reaching No. 4 on Billboard‘s dance charts and 11 on the Top 40. She was 20 years old.

“Doing the opposite of what I was constantly being told to do and being defiant is how that song came about,” Ford says.

Defiance is in Ford’s DNA. It’s what ignited her pop-music career—and what gave her the courage to walk away when things went awry. Her journey to career fulfillment isn’t so well-known, but anyone contemplating a professional reinvention should hear it.

Born Amanda Lee Williford in Ruskin, Florida, her music talents appeared at an early age. She even scored a spot studying opera in a competitive program. “I was getting free opera training from about 12 to 17. I loved it,” she says. Her chops were strong (listen here), but Ford found herself rejecting opera’s rigid practices. “I was a 16-year-old girl, and my teacher was telling me, ‘You can’t talk on the phone because you’re straining your vocals’ and, ‘You can’t drink that’ and, ‘You can’t eat this.'”

Ford just wanted to let loose, so she pivoted. “I knew in my soul that I wasn’t meant to wear a black dress in front of an orchestra and sing,” she says. “In that moment I decided, ‘I want to dance and have fun and write fun music.'”

The industry was ready for her. Bombastic, bubblegum pop dominated radio in the early aughts, and most of the women making it looked like Ford: Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Mandy Moore, Jessica Simpson. Ford crossed paths with most of them as she made her transition to pop. “Britney was always the loveliest human—just a really cool, sweet, normal girl back in the day,” she says. “Jessica was always a doll. The only person I didn’t know was Christina, believe it or not. For whatever reason, we never came into each other’s circle.”

Priyanka Chopra Wore a Designer Dress With a $30 Bag


Priyanka Chopra is currently in France celebrating Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner’s wedding along with her husband, Nick and the rest of the Jonas clan—which means we’ve been getting a ton of excellent celebrity style. Chopra has been wearing plenty of high-low outfits, which she’s known for and puts together so well. The latest? A yet-to-be-released designer dress with an under-$100 bag from a fast-fashion favorite.

On Thursday (June 27) Chopra headed to a pre-Jonas/Turner wedding party in Provence wearing a shiny metallic lavender shirtdress from Honayda’s Spring 2019 collection. She styled it with sandals, simple jewelry and, of course, husband Nick on her arm.

The Saudi brand has been around since 2017, but has recently been spotted on celebrities like Bella Hadid, Lupita Nyong’o, and Mary J Blige in recent months. Chopra herself wore one of its designs—a one-shouldered, pleated white jumpsuit—to Cannes earlier this year.

Although her shirtdress was designer, Chopra’s accessories were a little more budget friendly, according to fan blogs.
