Oscars 2020: The Best Red Carpet Hair and Makeup Looks

And just like that, awards season is over just as quickly as it began, ending Sunday night with the Oscars 2020. As to be expected with so many phenomenal actors up for nominations (like Laura Dern, Renée Zellweger, and Cynthia Erivo), this year’s Oscars 2020 red carpet looks were some of the most gorgeous in recent memory.

While it’s been a strong season for red carpet hair and makeup, the Oscars are when celebrities bring out all the stops. Think elegant updos, timeless makeup, and a heavy dose of Old Hollywood glamour, which always makes it an evening that sets the tone for the year ahead, especially when it comes to bridal trends.

Mindy Kaling and Chrissy Metz both went for loose, soft waves, while Zazie Beetz opted for half-up style with gorgeous curly bangs. And that was just in the first 20 minutes of the red carpet. Tune in throughout the night as we add our favorite hair and makeup looks from the Oscars red carpet, below.

Shop All the Glamour Beauty Awards Readers' Choice Makeup Nominees

For the past 16 years, the Glamour Beauty Awards have celebrated the products that have changed our routines forever: conditioners that transform curls, eye creams that reverse time, lipsticks that make us feel ready to take on the world. But if there’s one thing that makes us even more excited to rummage to through thousands of products (yes, thousands, and trust us, we do), it’s hearing the feedback from you.

That’s where our Glamour Beauty Awards Readers’ Choice nominations come in. From foundation to nail polish to fragrance, our editors narrowed down a list of the products you can’t stop talking about, and now we’re asking you to vote on your all-time favorites of the bunch. The polls are open for the next four weeks—click here to cast your votes!—then we’ll tally up the winners. They’ll be announced on March 23, along with the rest of the Glamour Beauty Award honorees.

In the meantime, you can study up on—or shop—all the products up for nomination in our Readers’ Choice makeup category. Check them out, below, then don’t forget to vote.

Best Foundation

Fact: No one wants to hear “your foundation looks so good today.” And that’s where these ace of bases come in. Each act like a filter for your skin to cover redness or dark spots, blur away lines and pores, and they don’t get dry or patchy before 3 P.M. Another non-negotiable? A wide range of shades. These all have over 30—and then some.

Best Powder

Wanted: A powder that doesn’t cake, settle into lines, or make your face look flat. Found: The powders that deliver. Whether you prefer an option that’s pressed (like Burt’s Bees’ compacts), tinted (like Maybelline’s Fit Me), or translucent—like Ilia’s natural formula, Marc Jacobs’ satiny finish, and Laura Mercier’s loose powder, which also comes in a deep translucent shade to prevent white casts—these powders meet all our incredibly tough standards.

Best Concealer

For something so basic, finding the perfect concealer can often feel like signing up for every dating app at once: overwhelming. That’s where online reviews can be particularly helpful. These five standouts consistently top best-seller charts and get five-star ratings from shoppers around the country. Charlotte Tilbury and YSL are famed for their lightweight coverage that blurs everything away, while CoverGirl, Maybelline, and Too Faced give full, non-cakey coverage.

Best Primer/Setting Spray

Does primer actually make a difference? It’s a question our beauty team is asked time and time again, to which we always respond, “If you try one of these.” Within the mountains of options, the workhorses below actually make good on their claims to keep your foundation smooth and in place for hours. Still not sold? ABH’s and Urban Decay’s setting sprays have got you.

Narrowing down a singular mascara as the best is tough task, given that the criteria for what “works” is so intensely personal. But after reading pages of reviews and testing our way through every mascara that lands on our desks, we’re confident these nominees check whatever box is important to you—whether that’s drama, definition, or a formula that won’t smudge under your eyes 10 minutes later.

Best Highlighter

A killer highlighter can be the difference between radiant, dewy skin—and, well, a streak of sparkle. These formulas would never. Whether you prefer a creamy texture like Pat McGrath’s balm, a liquid consistency like L’Oréal’s Glotion (it deserves a win just for its name alone), or a classic powder that melts into your skin instead of sit on it (sup, Dior and Fenty), these five are the highlights of all the highlighters out there.

Best Blush

One of the most severely underrated products in our humble opinion, blush has the ability to completely transform your face. With the right placement and shade, it does the job we all really wanted contour to do—in a much more natural way. It wakes up your complexion, makes cheekbones pop, and can make an intimidating lipstick shade instantly more wearable. Plus, just look at this packaging—it’s fun! Go for a rose palette or a stamp that presses on like a heart, or stick to a tried-and-true fave like Tarte or bareMinerals.

Best Bronzer

Gone are the days when brands tried to pass off three pale shades as bronzer for all. The latest iterations don’t read chalky on dark skin or muddy on pale skin because there are now more colors to choose from. Benefit, for example, recently expanded its reader-beloved Hoola line to include two deep shades and one fairer option, while every Insta-girl will talk your ear off about the magic Drunk Elephant’s D-Bronzi (mix it in your foundation for an instant back-from-vacation glow).

Best Nail Polish

For a nail polish to be one of the best, it has to do more than look great on. It has to be easy to apply (no glops, no streaks). It needs to last for longer than 36 hours. And the colors to choose from have to be good—whether you’re feeling a baby pink or a dark blue. Fortunately, we managed to find five that are up to the task—so all you have to do is pick your favorite.

Best Lip Color

Ruby Woo. Pillow Talk. Wild Ginger. Some lip colors are so iconic, they’re known alone by sight, number, or name. MAC, Charlotte Tilbury, and Tom Ford most certainly fall into the category of “cult classics,” but don’t sleep on the number of really solid drugstores options that are also coming out. Case in point: one of our editors fell asleep in Maybelline’s SuperStay Matte Ink and woke up to a perfectly precise lip. That’s how long-lasting it is. Best Brow Product

Remember when brows were something you just tweezed occasionally—that didn’t have their own full routine? Yeah, us neither. You can thank Cara Delevingne and the surge of pencils, pomades, gels, and powders made specifically to address whatever hyperspecific need you have for that. It’s hard to beat out the cult of Boy Brow (and the fluffy, full look it delivers), but then again the others all landed on best-sellers lists last year, so the competition is stiff (unlike these formulas).

Best Eyeshadow

Is there any makeup product more fun than eyeshadow? Take a look at the colors below and tell us you don’t feel just a little more happy. Kylie Jenner landed a nomination on her packaging alone (the Momager palette, we mean…), while Kim Kardashian’s new KKW formulas stack up with the best of them. Like Tom Ford’s and Huda Beauty’s, all the shades you’ll find here are rich, buttery, with intensely beautiful color payoff. In other words: They’re what your Friday night is missing.

Best Eyeliner

We’ll get right to the point: A great eyeliner needs to be sharp, easy to apply, and survive a day of staring at a screen (or a sweaty night out). That’s where these overachievers come in. Even the drugstore steals are worthy enough to make it on the red carpet, like last year’s Beauty Award winner. “I love that this is long-wearing and smudge-proof,” says celebrity makeup artist Kira Nasrat says of Revlon’s Colorstay. “It’s an essential for the red carpet, especially under those bright lights and long press days!”

In recent years there’s been a seismic shift in our collective beauty consciousness—we’re scanning ingredient lists, hunting for organic alternatives, and prioritizing sustainable packaging more than ever before. We brought back three of last year’s Beauty Awards winners due to the overwhelming love they received, plus added two new faves to the list. Golden Globes 2020: The Best Red Carpet Hair and Makeup

And we’re back! After the annual holiday lull, the Golden Globes 2020 red carpet is kicking off awards season once again and bringing back some much-needed glitz and glamour to our feeds. As the first major event of the awards circuit, the Golden Globes always set the tone for the hair trends and makeup looks we’ll be seeing between now and the Oscars—and, of course, into the rest of the year. The show also tends to be a bit more fun to watch since it’s less formal than other ceremonies, which also means you can usually expect stars to take more risks with their fashion and beauty looks.

Case in point: All the hair and makeup moments, below. Scroll on for our favorite looks from the Golden Globes 2020 red carpet, and don’t forget to check back later. We’ll be adding more details as they roll in throughout the night.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Shared the Products She Uses to Do Her Own Makeup for Public Appearances

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez isn’t running for president—at 30, she’s got another five years before she’s even allowed to—but she has been spending some time on the campaign trail lately as a high-profile endorser of Bernie Sanders. The congresswoman went to Los Angeles with the campaign on Saturday, December 21, where she spoke at a rally, but before greeting the crowd, she greeted her Instagram followers with a little look into her makeup routine and why, though she’s great at doing her makeup, she wishes it wasn’t considered a necessity for women in politics.

“So, first and foremost, I do not have a glam team. I don’t have a hairstylist, I don’t have a makeup artist that I take on the road with me. I do my own makeup,” Ocasio-Cortez says in a makeup-free video taken with her phone’s front-facing camera, explaining that the only time a professional does her makeup is when TV station makeup artists do it so it shows up correctly on-camera. “So it’s all very DIY, especially if you’re a woman running for office. You just have to learn how to do your own makeup. And I did it with lots of YouTube tutorials.”

She then shares a photo of the makeup she brought with her to L.A., and while she didn’t list the specific products, it appears she’s using Huda Beauty’s Easy Bake Powder and Matte & Metal Melted Shadow, the Allure Best of Beauty and Readers’ Choice award-winning L’Oréal Voluminous Lash Paradise Mascara, Nars Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer and what appears to be a Nars blush, a Kat Von D Shade & Light Contour palette, Fenty Beauty Match Stix, a Glossier Haloscope highlighter, as well as few other items, including her go-to Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick in Beso—the red she famously wore throughout her own Congressional campaign in 2018.

Along with the photo, she wrote, “This is what I used today. It’s more than usual (for me) but campaign stops have a zillion lights, lots of cameras, etc and it needs to stay on for a very long day.” She also noted, “Most of these products have excellent dupes! I also use dupes/drugstore bb cream for everyday makeup too.”

The Best Holiday Makeup Ideas From Instagram for 2019

We all have those Instagram accounts we check daily, turn post notifications on for, and refer to in conversation like they’re our actual friends. If you’ve ever scrolled onto one of these photos and wondered, How does she do it? you’re in luck. Welcome to our series Insta Stalking, in which we talk to the women behind the accounts we’re obsessing over about their beauty secrets. Next up, eight women reveal their go-to holiday makeup looks.

Every year we look forward to the holidays, until December rolls around and we’re reminded what an utter fustercluck this time actually is. Between holiday shopping, traveling, and finishing up on work before the end of the year, we get if you barely have time to breathe, let alone plan a killer makeup look for all those holiday parties you agreed to go to back in November.

Luckily, we have the internet at our service, and when you think about it, Instagram is essentially a digital mood board rife with makeup inspiration. Still, finding inspiration that’s actually easy to re-create and doesn’t require a phD in contouring is easier said than done. So that’s where we come in. We asked eight of our favorite women we follow to break down their favorite holiday makeup looks—and, yes, you really can do them at home. We got all your looks covered, from your company function to a New Year’s Eve banger.

All products featured on Glamour are independently selected by our editors. However, when you buy something through our retail links, we may earn an affiliate commission.

Kendall Jenner's Impression of Kylie Jenner Doing a Make-Up Tutorial Is Too Good

Everyone once in a while, the Kardashian sisters engage in a little friendly sibling rivalry—but Kendall Jenner is on a roll this week. On Tuesday, December 10, she joined Harry Styles while he was filling in on The Late, Late Show With James Corden and boldly ranked her family members in order of their parenting skills. (Spoiler: Kylie was far down on the list.) And now, a recent clip from Keeping Up With The Kardashians reveals that she also had some fun trolling Kylie. In a just-released clip, she brilliantly imitated the make-up icon—and she even did her impression for Kylie directly over Facetime.

The episode was one in which all of the Kardashian-Jenners dressed up as each other. Kendall threw on a wavy, pink-ombre wig and lots of blush-colored eyeshadow. While the confessional cameras were shooting her, she got a little maniacal putting on tons of lip color, cracking, “I love over-lining my lips. This is how it all started, literally. I just over-lined my lips and everyone was wondering what I was using.” She keeps the schtick going and ends up covering her mouth in Kylie’s red gloss. She eventually took the product onto her teeth, laughing the whole time and joking, “It feels so fucking good.”

Then, in footage back at the Kardashian house, Kendall gives Kylie a buzz to get her thoughts on the pink wig. “You look cute as Kylie,” her younger sister says approvingly. “It looks amazing.”

Kendall keeps her impression going for just the cameras, even nailing Kylie’s make-up tutorial voice and habit of putting her lip products right on her palm to give viewers a sense of the colors. “This is what it looks like,” Kendall teases at one point, showing off an entire arm covered in gloss. The episode hasn’t dropped yet, so we can’t see what the other Kardashians did, but there’s a very brief glimpse of Kourtney in futuristic sunglasses—we’re guessing she was Kim—and Kris in a fluffy blonde wig that sure looks like Khloe’s ‘do.

See the clip, below:
