Why Sophie Turner Says She 'Hated' the Jonas Brothers Growing Up

Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas are one of Hollywood’s favorite couples, married and (rumor has it) expecting their first child. But it all could have played out so differently.

In a new interview with Elle, Turner reveals she was not exactly a lover of the Jonas Brothers growing up. “My friends and I were not Jonas Brothers fans,” she said. “There was this band in the U.K. called Busted. They had a hit called ‘Year 3000.’ It was amazing, and we were huge Busted fans. Then the Jonas Brothers covered the song and made it massive. And Busted broke up. We thought it was all the Jonas Brothers’ fault. So we hated them.”

Well, okay then. But obviously at some point…things changed.

Back in 2016, a producer on the movie she was working on suggested she might like Jonas. Then, at another business meeting, the singer’s agent remarked that she reminded him of one of his clients. Finally, Jonas DM’d her while touring in the U.K—but Turner still wasn’t completely sold, so she brought back-up to their first hang.

“I was living with my friends in Camden, in a really rough flat— people were always climbing in and out of the windows. When I told my friends, they were like, ‘That’s hilarious. You have to do it! And you have to text us everything he says,’” she said. “I expected him to show up with security and everything. I thought, ‘He’s gonna be such a dick.’ I brought all my guy friends to come with me to meet him, because in the back of my mind I still worried that he could be a catfish—or I don’t know what. I just wanted my guy friends with me. I had my rugby boys. I was safe.”

Joe Jonas was not quite what Sophie Turner expected, however, and soon they were together non-stop. “It was just this local shitty bar, dirty, with great music and people throwing up everywhere. It was that kind of place. Kind of like the worst, but also kind of the best,” she continued. “He didn’t bring security. He brought a friend, and they drank just as hard as the rest of us. I remember the two of us spending only a couple of minutes on the dance floor, and then we just found a space far in the corner and we just talked. We talked for hours, and hours, and hours. And I was, like, not bored. It wasn’t contrived. It wasn’t small talk—it was just so easy. And soon we were, like, inseparable. I went on tour with him.”

The rest, as they say, is history.

Nick and Joe Jonas Hid Love Notes to Priyanka and Sophie in the New Jonas Brothers Album

The Jonas Brothers released their first album in over 10 years on Friday, June 7. Titled Happiness Begins, the record is chock-full of bops, including “Sucker,” which has found immense success on Billboard‘s Hot 100. But the album is also emotionally resonant, filled with lyrics about Kevin, Nick, and Joe‘s personal lives. All the brothers are happily married now, and that’s evident on a few of the songs—particularly “Hesitate” and “I Believe,” which contain love notes of sorts to Joe and Nick’s significant others, Sophie Turner and Priyanka Chopra.

Let’s start with “Hesitate,” which is Joe’s ode to Sophie. “Kiss the tears right off your face,” Joe sings on the track. “Won’t get scared, that’s the old, old, old me. I’ll be there time and place. Lay it on me, all you’re hold, hold, holding.”

Joe is the emotional rock here, which tracks with some of the soundbites Turner has given about their relationship. “He was like, ‘I can’t be with you until you love yourself. I can’t see you love me more than you love yourself,'” she told the Sunday Times in May. “That was something, him doing that. I think he kind of saved my life, in a way.”

But Turner is Joe’s emotional rock, as well, as evidenced when he sings, “You saved me once, and now I’ll save you too.”

Priyanka Chopra Went to Her First Jonas Brothers Concert and Documented the Whole Thing

Sure, Priyanka Chopra might be married to a Jonas Brother; be close friends with Sophie Turner, who is dating another Jonas Brother; and have starred in a Jonas Brothers music video. But she still hadn’t actually been to a Jonas Brothers concert—until Saturday night, that is.

Chopra attended her first-ever Jonas Brothers concert (!) over the weekend in Atlanta. And naturally, she documented the whole thing on social media. Her verdict? She loved every single moment of it.

“My first ever #jonasbrothers show. And it was incredible!!! I’m so proud of these guys!! #Family ❤️???,” she captioned an Instagram post featuring her, the band, and, in a second picture, the Jonas parents.

Throughout the night, Chopra kindly shared all the backstage action with fans through her Instagram Stories, from the line outside the venue to show-goers sending well-wishes to her husband, Nick. Behold, her play-by-play of the evening.

First, she was whisked into the Tabernacle Atlanta, where the Jonas Brothers would be performing, past what looks like crowds of fans waiting to get in.

Then, she admitted for the record that, yes, this was her first Jonas Brothers concert ever. But she was willing to give away a backstage secret or two.

Later, she came across some big Jonas Brothers fans and offered to pass along their messages to the boys.

Fellow show-goers spotted Chopra at the show, and captured some cute interactions between her and Nick—including him singing “I love you” to his wife in the crowd. (Ah, think of all the Jonas Brothers fans who have fantasized about being in Chopra’s position.)

Clearly, it was a successful night (and first Jonas Brothers concert, surely of many) for Chopra. Here’s to much more fangirling in the future. Meanwhile, we’ll be here, waiting for more tour dates to be released. C’mon, JoBros!

The Jonas Brothers Release a Video for their New Song "Sucker" Starring Priyanka Chopra, Sophie Turner, and Danielle Jonas

The Jonas Brothers are back, baby. The trio dropped their new single and accompanying video for “Sucker” at midnight—and it stars three very important women in their lives: Priyanka Chopra, Sophie Turner, and Danielle Jonas.

The song is an ode to being so head over heels for someone you’ll do anything they ask. With lyrics like “I’m a sucker for you / Say the word and I’ll go anywhere blindly / Any road you take you know that you’ll find me” and “You’re making the typical me / Break my typical rules,” the JoBros are putting their love for their partners on display. Chopra and Nick Jonas got married last year; Game of Thrones star Turner and Joe are engaged; and Danielle and Kevin have been married since 2009 and have two children together.

The women take on co-starring roles in the video, as well, set at a lavish party at a European manor. There is serious fashion, lots of dancing, drinking champagne in bathtubs, and what appears to be a low-key bondage moment where Joe is tied up as Turner looks on.

“This is the first time we’ve worked together but not for a moment did it feel like work,” Chopra wrote on Instagram. ‘Such a fun family affair…#JonasBrothers and the #JSisters cheering each other on! Proud of you husband.” Turner and Danielle also gave shout-outs to their “J Sisters,” the nickname the women have given themselves on social media.

Fans are naturally freaking out on social media, too.

And they were very much here for the fact that the JoBros featured the loves of their lives in the video. “Wow who knew Danielle, Priyanka and Sophie are my new favorite Jonas brothers???” wrote one user. “The jonas brothers using their wives in the Sucker music video is the content i’m here for,” said another.

Selena Gomez and Taylor Swift's Friendship Is the 'Best Thing' They Got Out of Dating the Jonas Brothers

Two thousand eight was a momentous year: Juno and Ratatouille won Oscars, the American economy hit record lows, and Selena Gomez and Taylor Swift were each dating a Jonas brother (Nick and Joe, respectively). And though neither relationship made it to 2009, Gomez and Swift’s friendship stood the test of time and has become, according to Gomez, the “best thing” either of them got out of their short-lived, late-aughts love stories.

“We actually dated the Jonas brothers together! It was hysterical,” Gomez said during a visit to British radio station KISS FM this week. “It was amazing, because she was the girl with the big curly hair and all the bracelets and the cowboy boots. And I was definitely up-and-coming, and we just clicked. It was the best thing we got out of those relationships.” Gomez also noted that she’d be willing to duet with Swift “anytime, any place,” saying, “She has been a fighter, a warrior, and a friend through all of this.”

Gomez, who is now sparking rumors of a rekindled romance with Justin Bieber, hastily added that there are no hard feelings between the two superstar pals and their boy-band exes. “They’re lovely, by the way. We’re all friends now,” she said. “We were young, you know; it’s a different time.” She and Nick have proved that they’re some of the best and most supportive exes in Hollywood: In 2015 she told Capital FM that they speak and hang out regularly. “We actually caught up the other day, and it’s really fun to be able to do that,” she said, adding that their relationship “was like puppy love. It was very sweet. He’s lovely. I do have a love for him for sure.” The following year Nick raved about Gomez’s recent work. “Selena has been incredibly, incredibly smart,” he told Entertainment Weekly at the time. “She played me Revival maybe six months before it came out, and I knew, like, this is excellent.”

And this summer, not long after the “Wolves” singer revealed that she had undergone a kidney transplant, Nick wished her well in an interview with SiriusXM’s Hits 1. “I was as surprised as everyone else when I woke up and saw her Instagram,” he said. “But wow, just incredible. And the strength she’s shown through all that’s amazing and inspiring. And I’m pumped for her. I’m happy to see that she’s doing well, it seems, and that she was able to get the surgery. And her friend helping her was a beautiful thing, so it’s all amazing.”

As for Swift and the elder Jonas, although they have yet to be as publicly friendly as Nick and Gomez, they did once go on an intimate river cruise in London together when Joe was dating Gigi Hadid and Swift was with Calvin Harris back in 2015. Both Jonases were also invited to Swift’s infamous Fourth of July party that same year. Would it be too far-fetched to expect to see Swift and Gomez at Joe’s upcoming wedding to Sophie Turner?

Mufasa and Scar Aren't Actually Brothers in 'The Lion King'

PHOTO: Everett Collection / Everett Collection

If you’re a ’90s kid, you’ve seen The Lion King at least 300 times. You can probably recite the entire script from start to finish, but for the three people who haven’t seen it, here’s a quick summary: A diabolical lion named Scar kills his royal brother, Mufasa, in order gain control of the Pride Lands, which causes Mufasa’s son (Simba) to run away. While stranded in the middle of nowhere, Simba meets a friendly meerkat (Timone) and warthog (Pumbaa), who help him get his stride back. After years of confidence-building, Simba returns to the Pride Lands to battle Scar and reclaim his father’s title. It’s standard, Disney tearjerker stuff—and we love it.

But we’ve all been getting a fundamental component of The Lion King wrong for two decades. As it turns out, Mufasa and Scar aren’t brothers—not by blood, at least. The sleuths over at HelloGiggles found this out after interviewing the 1994 film’s director (Rob Minkoff) and producer (Don Hahn).

“[While making the movie] we talked about the fact that it was very likely [Scar and Mufasa] would not have both the same parents,” Hahn said. “The way lions operate in the wild…when the male lion gets old, another rogue lion comes and kills the head of the pride. What that does is it causes the female lions to go into heat [to reproduce], and then the new younger lion kills the king and then he kills all the babies. Now he’s the new lion that’s running the pride.”

So, in other words, Scar was just a strange lion who sensed Mufasa was getting old, so he swooped in and killed him. Harsh, right? (Actually, maybe this isn’t as harsh as your own brother murdering you.)

“There was always this thing about well, how do you have these two [male] lions?” Hahn continued. “Occasionally there are prides that do have two male lions, in an interesting dynamic because they’re not equals [since they don’t have the same parents]. One lion will always kind of be off in the shadows. We were trying to use those animal truths to underpin the story so we sort of figured Scar and Mufasa couldn’t really be from the same gene pool.”

If you pay close attention to the movie, Scar actually confirms he and Mufasa aren’t birth brothers—but it’s subtle. “I’m from the shallow end of the gene pool,” he says at one point.

Mind blown, right? What bombshell are you going to drop next, Disney? That Elsa and Anna aren’t sisters?! I feel bad for even putting that in the universe.
