Here‘s Why Camilla Won‘t Be Called ‘Queen’ When Prince Charles Is King

Despite what you may have heard, Queen Elizabeth II will not reign forever. Her son, Prince Charles (the Prince of Wales), will eventually become king, which means his wife, Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, will have to be called something else. But it turns out, her new title won’t be Queen Camilla.

The duchess has had a lot of names and titles. She was born Camilla Shand and married Andrew Parker Bowles, becoming Camilla Parker Bowles. Then, when she married Prince Charles in 2005, she took on the title the Duchess of Cornwall. The reason she was not known as the Princess of Wales was out of respect for the late Princess Diana.

So when Charles becomes king, what are we supposed to call Camilla?

Apparently there’s been some confusion about her future title throughout the years. According to the Daily Star (per the Sunday Times), it’s rumored that Prince Charles would like his wife to be called the queen consort, which is the title usually bestowed upon the wife of the reigning king. Alas, he will be disappointed.

“The intention is for the duchess to be known as princess consort when the prince accedes to the throne,” a spokesperson for the royal couple recently told The Times. “This was announced at the time of the marriage and there has been absolutely no change at all.”

That’s true. Before the couple wed in a civil ceremony at Windsor Guildhall, Clarence House announced the creation of this new title. “It is intended that Mrs. Parker Bowles should use the title HRH The Princess Consort when The Prince of Wales accedes to The Throne,” the statement said. At the time, Slate described “princess consort” as a title created to avoid a P.R. crisis.

“It’s a new title created just for Camilla, because crowning her as queen would create P.R. problems for the royals,” columnist Daniel Engber wrote in February 2005. “A marriage between divorcees like Charles and Camilla remains taboo for some members of the Church of England, and Camilla is already unpopular for breaking up the prince’s marriage to Diana.”

Honestly, all this title-hopping is getting confusing. It’s reported that Princess Beatrice will also become a countess when she marries Italian “property tycoon” Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi. That’s not even a part of the same royal succession. At this point, can’t we just call them all by their first names? It works for Harry.

Camilla Parker Bowles Gave a Shady Wink During Tea With Donald Trump, and People Are Living

Camilla Parker Bowles is the royal everyone’s talking about today, thanks to a cheeky wink she gave behind President Donald Trump‘s back during his visit to the U.K. on Monday, June 4.

The reasoning behind the Duchess of Cornwall’s wink is unclear. Is she being shady? Funny? Was there just something in her eye? OK, it’s definitely not that last one. This was a clear, distinct wink, and whatever the context, it’s funny as hell.

The Internet, naturally, is having a field day over Bowles’ gesture, with some asserting it confirms the royal family’s eye-roll attitude toward Trump. Of course, that’s just conjecture. The royals are pretty tight-lipped when it comes to moments like this (and also…everything else), so we’ll probably never know exactly why Bowles winked. So let’s just enjoy it at face value, shall we?

First, check out Camilla Parker Bowles’ instantly-iconic moment for yourself, below:

And read some Twitter users’ reactions—all hilarious.

“In that one wink Camilla has redeemed herself entirely to me. All is forgiven,” one person wrote on Twitter. “Camilla’s face is the look your mum gives you when you say you want to go home,” posted another, while a third simply wrote, “We are all Camilla.” Yes, we are.

It’s been a whirlwind few days for the royal family and the Trumps. The group had dinner tonight at Winfield House, the residence of the U.S. ambassador in England, where Trump is staying during his visit. There was also a ceremonial welcome for the Trumps at the Buckingham Palace Garden on Monday.

One person who noticeably isn’t meeting with Trump on his trip is Meghan Markle, who’s still on maternity leave. In an interview with The Sun earlier this week, Trump reportedly called Markle “nasty” after learning she accused him of being “misogynistic” and “divisive” in the 2016 election. He later denounced The Sun‘s story in a tweet:

This Is the One Food Royals Can't Eat, According to Duchess Camilla

In news that will come as a shock for many lovers of a certain bulbous, delicious ingredient, there is apparently one food and one food only that royals aren’t allowed to eat. Found in cultures’ cuisines around the world, it seems as though the humble but decidedly supreme garlic isn’t allowed on royal plates. Much like not wearing red nail polish, messy buns (unless you’re Meghan Markle, that is), and going sans nylons, this is apparently as much a matter of royal protocol as any. Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, appeared on MasterChef Australia earlier this week and explained exactly why.

“I hate to say this, but garlic. Garlic is a no-no,” the duchess said.

“So garlic is a no-no?” one of the show’s judges asked. “Because you’re talking, chatting?”

“Yes, exactly. So you always have to lay off the garlic,” she said.

This news is, to be sure, exceptionally tragic—but it’s not the first time the royal family has come out as anti-garlic. Back in 2016, we discovered that Queen Elizabeth II is royally averse to the stuff (the Queen, let it be said, is “not a foodie at all”). As it turns out, it seems as though she might have set a bit of a precedent.

As former Buckingham Palace kitchen chef Darren McGrady said all the way back then, “When [the Queen] was at the table, there was no garlic at all,” he said. “She was very Victorian and believed when she was brought up that you don’t eat garlic—because if you were holding an audience the next day, you didn’t want to be breathing garlic. It was seen as antisocial.”

Just last month, he added that “anything with garlic” as well as anything with “too much onions” would never be on royal plates. “The Queen would never have garlic on the menu,” he added.

The Queen’s reasoning seems pretty similar to the Duchess of Cornwalls, but let’s be real: This is 2018, and things like breath mints, gum, and super-extra strength toothpaste are available to avoid offending international guests with garlicky breath.

We all know Markle has given up a lot to become a Duchess, and this means she will also have to cancel garlic—an ingredient that she loved to mix in her recipe for a Filipino-style chicken. We hereby humbly submit a petition to the Queen: Stock up on the minty stuff, and cut loose on the garlic. You won’t look back.

Duchess Camilla Says Even the Royal Family Wasn't Sure How the Royal Wedding Would Go

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s royal wedding went off without a hitch last Saturday—much the relief of the royal family, who, like the rest of the world, was anticipating more drama to unfold in light of the Thomas Markle controversy. (More on that in a second.) During an interview with British radio station Channel 5 on Wednesday morning, Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, spoke about her stepson Prince Harry’s “uplifting” wedding, and hinted that the palace was as shocked as the rest of us by all of the pre-wedding tumult that came courtesy of Markle’s immediate family.

“It was such a lovely day. Just everything went right,” Duchess Camilla said in her interview, according to the Daily Mail‘s royal correspondent Rebecca English. “We all wondered whatever would happen next and then everything went right. The only thing is that we are all losing our voices now.” She added, “It’s nice to have something that is uplifting rather than depressing. Everything was just perfect, including the weather, which couldn’t have been better. It was a beautiful day.”

Last week Thomas Markle revealed at the last minute he wouldn’t be attending the royal wedding in light of a report alleging paparazzi photos taken of him were staged. Later, though, he changed his mind, and then changed it again. TMZ echoed Duchess Camilla’s interview with a report that the royal family had been completely “blindsided” by Thomas Markle’s decision. The palace also released a statement about the matter: “This is a deeply personal moment for Ms. Markle in the days before her wedding She and Prince Harry ask again for understanding and respect to be extended to Mr. Markle in this difficult situation.” Meghan Markle ultimately released a statement herself, confirming that her father wasn’t attending her wedding.

In the end, of course, the royal wedding ran as smoothly as possible and was a joyous affair for all involved. And on Tuesday (May 22), lost voices or not, the newlyweds reconvened with the royal family for Prince Charles’ 70th Birthday Patronage Celebration at the Buckingham Palace Gardens, where Meghan shared a laugh with her new parents-in-law as Harry paid tribute to his dad with a sweet speech (and expertly avoided a bee attack).
