Here’s Where to Buy a Thermometer Right Now

The CDC lists a fever as one of the most common symptoms of those positive for COVID-19, so you may be wondering where to buy a thermometer right now. While studies show social distancing is working, we aren’t out of the woods yet—so monitoring your and your family’s health is of utmost importance. Although some COVID-19 carriers are asymptomatic, spotting a too-high temp can help you take proper precautions.

Like face masks, thermometers are sold out almost everywhere, but you can still buy one from select retailers across the web. So we rounded up the best options still available to purchase online, and we spoke to Neelima Nadella, M.D.—a doctor currently working in the ICU at Mt. Sinai New York—for additional tools to consider keeping on deck during quarantine.

Thermometers

Aside from monitoring your body for aches and pains, dry cough, and shortness of breath, checking your temperature can help you decide whether you should ask your doctor for a test. Stay on top of your temperature and spot a fever with the available options below.

First Aid Kits

The last thing you want to have to do is leave your house for a bandage, and Judy makes four different emergency kits that are all still in stock. Most include hand sanitizer, face masks, mini meals, and other items that will keep you prepared for unforeseen circumstances aside from a pandemic—from electrical outages to everyday accidents.

Over-the-Counter Medication

“Have Tylenol (aka acetaminophen or paracetamol) as well as over-the-counter meds to treat symptoms like cough, congestion, and diarrhea,” says Nadella.

Electrolytes

When your immune system is compromised, your body becomes depleted of nutrients and electrolytes it needs most. Nadella recommends keeping electrolyte replacements on deck. Coconut water is packed with potassium, magnesium, and calcium, but tried-and-true Gatorade will do the trick too.

Instant Meals

It’s a good idea to keep nonperishable pantry items and ready-made meals on hand, especially if you’re quarantining solo. “If you live alone, have some easy-to-make meals like soup or ramen, in case you get sick,” Nadella recommends. You can also look to food delivery services to keep your fridge well-stocked.

Oximeters

According to the American Thoracic Society’s patient resource, most people do not need a pulse oximeter, though Nadella says, “If you are able to get one, a pulse oximeter can be useful.” She explains: “It’s a little battery-operated device you put on your finger that tells you your oxygen level; most also tell you your heart and pulse rate. You just need one per household, so please share if you have more than one.” Whether you have a pulse oximeter or not, the CDC recommends seeking medical attention immediately if you’re experiencing trouble breathing or have persistent pain or pressure in your chest.

Face Masks

If you need to leave the house, the CDC recommends you wear a face covering. Check out our list of where to buy a face mask, including tips on how to make one yourself.

Here‘s Why Camilla Won‘t Be Called ‘Queen’ When Prince Charles Is King

Despite what you may have heard, Queen Elizabeth II will not reign forever. Her son, Prince Charles (the Prince of Wales), will eventually become king, which means his wife, Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, will have to be called something else. But it turns out, her new title won’t be Queen Camilla.

The duchess has had a lot of names and titles. She was born Camilla Shand and married Andrew Parker Bowles, becoming Camilla Parker Bowles. Then, when she married Prince Charles in 2005, she took on the title the Duchess of Cornwall. The reason she was not known as the Princess of Wales was out of respect for the late Princess Diana.

So when Charles becomes king, what are we supposed to call Camilla?

Apparently there’s been some confusion about her future title throughout the years. According to the Daily Star (per the Sunday Times), it’s rumored that Prince Charles would like his wife to be called the queen consort, which is the title usually bestowed upon the wife of the reigning king. Alas, he will be disappointed.

“The intention is for the duchess to be known as princess consort when the prince accedes to the throne,” a spokesperson for the royal couple recently told The Times. “This was announced at the time of the marriage and there has been absolutely no change at all.”

Rob Jefferies/Getty Images

That’s true. Before the couple wed in a civil ceremony at Windsor Guildhall, Clarence House announced the creation of this new title. “It is intended that Mrs. Parker Bowles should use the title HRH The Princess Consort when The Prince of Wales accedes to The Throne,” the statement said. At the time, Slate described “princess consort” as a title created to avoid a P.R. crisis.

“It’s a new title created just for Camilla, because crowning her as queen would create P.R. problems for the royals,” columnist Daniel Engber wrote in February 2005. “A marriage between divorcees like Charles and Camilla remains taboo for some members of the Church of England, and Camilla is already unpopular for breaking up the prince’s marriage to Diana.”

Honestly, all this title-hopping is getting confusing. It’s reported that Princess Beatrice will also become a countess when she marries Italian “property tycoon” Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi. That’s not even a part of the same royal succession. At this point, can’t we just call them all by their first names? It works for Harry.

Here’s Why the Bachelor Is Not Allowed to Give His Jacket to the Women on the Show

A producer on The Bachelor wants you to know that Peter Weber is a chivalrous dude who would totally give his jacket to his date if she were cold. He’s just not supposed to.

No, I’m not joking. The reason Pilot Pete is never caught on camera pulling this particular rom-com move is simple: It looks “silly.” The question was raised by a concerned Entertainment Weekly reporter who noticed Madison was cold in the latest episode of The Bachelor—you know, the one in which she dipped after finding out he slept with another contestant during Fantasy Suite week.

“The Bachelor nearly always offers his jacket to every shivering woman sitting in front of him,” the producer told EW. “But [we] tell him not to, because it looks so damn silly.”

But it’s the next part of the source’s statement that sends me. Apparently, pashminas are kept on site to avoid multiple shots of “a small woman draped in an enormous blazer.” A. Small. Woman. Draped. In. An. Enormous. Blazer. I’m getting that tattooed on my shoulder to remind me to always bring a coat to my next breakup with a partner who’s dating two other women.

You can have my arms to protect you from the cold…as a treat.

ABC

This is far from the biggest controversy the producers have faced this week. Fans were not impressed by the unprecedented choice to have the three remaining women live together during the Fantasy Suite dates. Chris Harrison explained that the goal was to create an “uncomfortable zone” that would force Madison to be honest with Peter about her virginity and her opposition to staying in the competition should he choose to sleep with Victoria F. or Hannah Ann.

“Sometimes we do it for your behalf; sometimes we do it for the guy’s or the girl’s,” he said on the Bachelor Happy Hour podcast. “This situation was pretty extraordinary because Peter had kicked the can down the road, but also, this time Madison had. So this was to force a situation that had to happen, and it had to happen this week.”

No word yet on whether or not Madison returns to the show before Peter gets down on one knee (all signs point to yes). Wherever she is, I hope she’s warm.

I Help People Pick Wedding Rings for a Living. Here’s How I Found My Own

Nicholson doesn’t believe in putting down any particular type of ring style—“everyone has different preferences and that’s great. How it should it,” she says—but for customers like herself who prefer something a bit more unique and personal, she warns shoppers to be cautious of designs that have a sudden surge in popularity. “We definitely try to go for styles where you can’t pinpoint the era that they’re from,” she says. “They kind of look vintage but they look modern also.”

This isn’t to say that every recently trendy style, such as a halo cut or cluster rings, should be avoided. But customers should look beyond them in order to determine what truly speaks to their taste. “I like the idea of buying the piece that you’ll keep forever, but sometimes it is really hard to tell if you’re falling into a trend or really just eyeing something you truly love,” she says. She recommends two ways to find clarity.

First, do some historical digging for inspiration from 40, 50, or 100 years ago. “Don’t just look at what you’re being marketed with. Do a little bit of research on what rings looked like over time. Does anything speak to you more than the one you got targeted by 10 times today on Instagram?”

Second, Nicholson says buying a forever ring is about considering the materials as closely as you would the design. Alternative stones such as emeralds, sapphires, morganite, or opal may be beautiful, but customers should be aware that they’re not as hard as a diamond, she explains. Metals such as 18-karat gold and G-color, VS-clarity diamonds will retain their value over time, even if your taste should change. “If in 10 years this [ring] is really not what you want to wear, then you reset it and adapt it to modern times,” Nicholson suggests; she stresses that both parties in a relationship should be on the same page about this possibility walking into that purchase.

A Ceremony ring

For further ring-shopping resources, Nicholson shares that Ceremony is relaunching its own site on December 26 to introduce a video concierge service that helps shoppers through the overwhelming process of selecting a diamond. “We search for each stone as we’re working with the customer,” she explains. The site’s new feature provides a more one-on-one experience to make sure every ring has the look and budget that fits each customer.

Ceremony is one of many brands who set a new precedent for the bridal industry and also focus on allowing individuals to decide for themselves what commitment and partnership looks like. Other examples include brands like Lein, which creates dresses to be worn for the wedding day and any day after; fellow jewelry brand Anna Sheffield, famous for its stackable engagement and wedding rings in unique materials; and Zola, a site that allows couples to create a registry for their honeymoon adventure or a charity close to their hearts instead of asking for a toaster or a gravy boat.

Ceremony is a for-profit business, but it’s also one that opens up questions about why people marry, how they marry, and how they choose to show their commitment through a piece of jewelry. For Nicholson, that symbol is a tri-stone ring; for her fiance, it’s the Rowan III, a wider gold ring. “I got him an engagement ring too,” she says, sharing another unconventional approach to engagement rings, which are almost exclusively marketed for women to wear. “Because we’re having a two year engagement, it’s kind of weird that I’m wearing a ring for two years and he doesn’t have one, so he has a ring that he wears every day.”

Wonder Woman 1984: Here’s Everything We Know About the Sequel

Here’s everything else we know so far:

1. Wonder Woman is coming to the United States. “The story will take place in the U.S., which I think is right,” Jenkins told Entertainment Weekly. “She’s Wonder Woman. She’s got to come to America. It’s time.”

2. It will take place in the 1980s, and Diana will fight the Soviet Union in the Cold War. According to The Wrap. The title of the sequel gives us the exact year: Wonder Woman 1984.

3. Chris Pine is somehow in the film. His character, Steve Trevor, sacrificed himself in the first film and appeared to die. However, he will come back—we just don’t know how yet. “I promise you it’s not a gimmick,” Jenkins said, per the New York Times. “He’s integral to the story.”

4. Kristen Wiig will play Cheetah, Wonder Woman’s nemesis. Bless up.

5. It looks like Wonder Woman will be keeping her iconic costume. It’s truly timeless.

6. The release date is June 5, 2020. Sorry, but we still have a while to wait. That being said, I’ve already started a countdown.

7. The first trailer looks promising. On December 8, Jenkins introduced the first trailer for the film at CCXP, a Comic-Con Experience convention in Brazil. “We wanted to bring Wonder Woman into the modern world,” she said, according to the New York Times. If you’ve always dreamed of watching Wonder Woman doing battle in an ’80s mall, then this trailer is going to please you greatly.

We also get to see the return of Diana’s boyfriend Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) and the introduction of the villainous Maxwell Lord (Pedro Pascal) and Kristen Wiig’s character, Barbara Minerva, who appears to start out as a friend of our heroine, but eventually becomes the evil Cheetah.

Honestly, it looks amazing. Watch for yourself below.

Here’s How Justin Bieber and Hailey Baldwin Reportedly Feel About Selena Gomez’s New Music

Selena Gomez dropped two new songs this week—“Lose You to Love Me” and “Look at Her Now”—and fans are convinced both address the pop star’s ex-boyfriend Justin Bieber.

The evidence is in the lyrics. On the former song, Gomez muses, “In two months, you replaced us / Like it was easy / Made me think I deserved it / In the thick of healing.” (Bieber became engaged to Hailey Baldwin in summer 2018, a mere few months after ending his relationship with Gomez for good.) The latter song, meanwhile, speaks in generalities but illustrates the process of finding yourself again after enduring a breakup. “Of course she was sad / But now she’s glad she dodged a bullet,” she sings.

Gomez, for her part, hasn’t mentioned Justin Bieber or Hailey Baldwin by name in recent interviews about the new music. We’ll probably never know for sure the inspiration behind the songs—but regardless, Bieber and Baldwin aren’t sweating the chatter.

[embedded content]

“Of course Justin and Hailey have heard Selena’s new song and they are both trying to not give any reaction to her lyrics referencing Justin,” a source reveals to E! News. “It isn’t ideal for Hailey, but she understands the creative process of writing music and that Justin had a past.”

The source continues, “Justin has completely moved on from that chapter of his life and understands that Selena is allowed to reflect on the past in her own way. Justin and Hailey both want Selena to be happy and in a good place and aren’t phased by it.”

[embedded content]

This is certainly in line with how Baldwin reacted to fans thinking she shaded Gomez on Instagram after the new music dropped. The model posted a screen shot of the Summer Walker song “I’ll Kill You” to her IG Story the same day Gomez released “Lose You to Love Me,” which, of course, fans read into. But Baldwin shut this down quickly. “Please stop with this nonsense. There is no ‘response.’ This is complete BS,” she wrote in a now deleted comment.

Gomez also seemingly addressed this drama on Instagram Live. “I am so grateful for the response of the song. However, I will never stand for women tearing other women down,” she said. “So please be kind to everyone.”
