Here‘s Why Camilla Won‘t Be Called ‘Queen’ When Prince Charles Is King

Despite what you may have heard, Queen Elizabeth II will not reign forever. Her son, Prince Charles (the Prince of Wales), will eventually become king, which means his wife, Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, will have to be called something else. But it turns out, her new title won’t be Queen Camilla.

The duchess has had a lot of names and titles. She was born Camilla Shand and married Andrew Parker Bowles, becoming Camilla Parker Bowles. Then, when she married Prince Charles in 2005, she took on the title the Duchess of Cornwall. The reason she was not known as the Princess of Wales was out of respect for the late Princess Diana.

So when Charles becomes king, what are we supposed to call Camilla?

Apparently there’s been some confusion about her future title throughout the years. According to the Daily Star (per the Sunday Times), it’s rumored that Prince Charles would like his wife to be called the queen consort, which is the title usually bestowed upon the wife of the reigning king. Alas, he will be disappointed.

“The intention is for the duchess to be known as princess consort when the prince accedes to the throne,” a spokesperson for the royal couple recently told The Times. “This was announced at the time of the marriage and there has been absolutely no change at all.”

That’s true. Before the couple wed in a civil ceremony at Windsor Guildhall, Clarence House announced the creation of this new title. “It is intended that Mrs. Parker Bowles should use the title HRH The Princess Consort when The Prince of Wales accedes to The Throne,” the statement said. At the time, Slate described “princess consort” as a title created to avoid a P.R. crisis.

“It’s a new title created just for Camilla, because crowning her as queen would create P.R. problems for the royals,” columnist Daniel Engber wrote in February 2005. “A marriage between divorcees like Charles and Camilla remains taboo for some members of the Church of England, and Camilla is already unpopular for breaking up the prince’s marriage to Diana.”

Honestly, all this title-hopping is getting confusing. It’s reported that Princess Beatrice will also become a countess when she marries Italian “property tycoon” Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi. That’s not even a part of the same royal succession. At this point, can’t we just call them all by their first names? It works for Harry.

Camila Mendes and Charles Melton Just Publicly Declared Their Love—and People Are Freaking Out

Riverdale is a show known for its crazy drama—but behind the scenes, it’s also been the birthplace of many a young Hollywood couple. While the status of Lili Reinhart and Cole Sprouse’s relationship, a.k.a “Bughead” on the show, was called into question earlier this summer, it appears that Camila Mendes, who plays Veronica, and Charles Melton (Reggie) are going strong.

The two kept their relationship fairly private in the beginning, but they have been spotted out and about at some big events, including this year’s Met Gala. Now, a year after they started dating, Mendes and Melton are out here on Instagram publicly declaring that they’re in love. That’s quite a way to celebrate an anniversary.

The actress posted a sweet photo of the two kissing on a boat with a gorgeous sunset in the background. “365 days. i love you,” she wrote in the caption.

Meanwhile, Melton also chose a boat photo to mark the occasion. “I love you,” he wrote.

Friends and fans were loving the public display of affection. “?❤️,” Reinhart wrote in Mendes’s comments. “I love you too …oh wait… you meant @camimendes,” Madchen Amick, who plays Alice Cooper on Riverdale, jokingly wrote in response to Melton’s post.

There were some fans who were upset that Mendes isn’t paired up IRL with her onscreen on-again-off-again boyfriend, KJ Apa (who plays Archie Andrews)—not, you know, that that’s their business. But the Charles and Camila stans were quick to shut that down: “To the people who say that Camila should be with KJ, can’t you just shut your damn mouth?!” one wrote. “It’s so disrespectful and horrible to comment something like this on a picture where she’s saying ‘I love you’ to him. If you love her or even like her then respect, if you know what that word means. Respect her decisions, it’s not your life, it’s hers. She’s happy with Charles, then let her be. They love each other and are really cute together. ?”

Prince Harry Reveals How He Asked Prince Charles to Walk Meghan Markle Down the Aisle

Does the royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle feel like it was about 100 years ago to you too? So very much has happened since the couple tied the knot in Windsor on May 19. And that includes the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s recent official overseas tour of Australia, Fiji, Tonga, and New Zealand. They kicked that off days after Princess Eugenie’s royal wedding by dropping some big news: They’re expecting their first child in the spring. Like I said, a lot has happened.

Still, any new tidbits about that magical royal wedding day are always welcome—and the latest comes from Prince Harry himself.

In a new documentary celebrating the seventieth birthday of Prince Charles—Prince, Son and Heir: Charles at 70—the Duke of Sussex opens up about asking his dad to walk Markle down the aisle. At the time her own father, Thomas Markle, was making headlines because he backed out of attending the wedding, citing health issues.

“I asked him to, and I think he knew it was coming, and he immediately said, ‘Yes, of course, I’ll do whatever Meghan needs and I’m here to support you,’” Harry says in the documentary. “For him that’s a fantastic opportunity to step up and be that support, and you know he’s our father, so of course he’s gonna be there for us.”

Who can forget that sweet father-son moment when Charles and Markle arrived at the end of the aisle and Harry said, “Thank you, pa.” Looking back on it, Harry says, “You’ve gotta say thank you. Just because he’s my father that doesn’t mean I can just sort of go, ‘OK, that’s all, I’ll take it from here.’”

“I was very grateful for him to be able to do that,” he adds.

Charles’ wife, Camilla, also opens up about the day in the documentary—and reveals that royals had the wedding on replay just like us. “I think that was very touching, sitting where I was, you couldn’t hear what he said,” she says. “But afterward watching it on the television, I…I think it was a very…it was a lovely gesture.”

Camilla also offered a little insight into her husband’s relationship with Markle’s mother, Doria Ragland. “A lot of people, seeing my husband actually take the bride’s mother by the hand to sign the registry, it’s something that moved everybody,” she explains. “It’s the things he does behind the scenes that people don’t know about. I don’t think people realize quite how kind he is.”

Prince Charles Will Walk Meghan Markle Down the Aisle for Her Royal Wedding

As we, the enthusiastically vigilant royal wedding watchers here at Glamour.com, have touched on before, there’s a whole lot of drama going down regarding the presence of Meghan Markle‘s father, Thomas Markle Sr., on the big day. The key point is that he will no longer be attending the royal wedding: He’s in recovery following heart surgery on Wednesday. While it’s wonderful that the surgery seems to have gone well, it must be sad for Meghan that he won’t be at her wedding to walk her down the aisle, per the original plan announced May 4 by Kensington Palace. (There’s a whole lot more going on beyond that, including faked paparazzi photos—do feel free to sit yourself down with a massive cup of coffee to get through it all.)

“Sadly, my father will not be attending our wedding,” Meghan said in a statement released by Kensington Palace. “I have always cared for my father and hope he can be given the space he needs to focus on his health. I would like to thank everyone who has offered generous messages of support. Please know how much Harry and I look forward to sharing our special day with you on Saturday.”

Never fear, however: Someone has swooped in to walk Meghan down the aisle—and it’s not who you might expect.

On Friday morning, according to The Guardian, Kensington announced that Harry’s father Charles, Prince of Wales, will accompany Markle down the aisle. Apparently she asked him to fill in after her father confirmed he’d be unable to do so himself.

“The Prince of Wales is pleased to be able to welcome Ms Markle to the royal family in this way,” the palace said in a statement.

Other good news: Prince Harry’s grandfather, the Duke of Edinburgh—a.k.a. Philip, a.k.a. Queen Elizabeth’s husband—will be able to attend the wedding. The 96-year-old royal has been in recovery from a hip operation.
