We may have replaced our old family board games with fancy consoles, but there are only so many Mario Kart circuits we can race before our brains begin to feel, well…like mush. Trying to entertain yourself by only reading books can nudge you further into self-isolation mode, while 1,000+ piece puzzles—although truly satisfying to complete—can be too challenging. But family board games? A foolproof cure for cabin fever.
Some games bring us together, others tear us apart (lovingly, of course)—either way, they’re exactly the kind of distraction we need right now. And it’s not just us; retailers everywhere are having a hard time keeping their board game from flying off warehouse shelves. And it makes sense—kids and adults alike are staring at monitors more than ever, now that we’re schooling or working from home. So to give your tired eyes a break from all the excess screen time while also reminding ourselves that social distancing doesn’t have to mean being antisocial, we rounded up the best family board games to play right now.
Whether you’re playing with two or four people, here are 16 options that will make to make every day feel like a Sunday. Ready, set, play.

School’s out indefinitely, and entertaining my daughters (ages 1.5 and 3.5) between my own WFH schedule is at the top of my priority list. We don’t just need a few games for kids to play on a rainy day—we need solutions to help us practice social distancing for weeks. At this point, my family has run nearly every avenue dry. We’ve spent the last six days wreaking havoc on every room in the house and blasting through every toy, book, and activity that was part of our normal stock of entertainment.
As parents, many of us are juggling our fears regarding health, coupled with the logistics of how you spend all this time with your kids indoors, and (a lot of us) with no additional childcare to help. Schools support families in endless ways and provided a great schedule for mine to live our lives by. Right now, I’m doing my best to keep my girls’ routines in place—and also my sanity in check. So in an effort to make the next few weeks a little easier, here are some easy indoor games for kids to play, along with activity ideas that only need a product or two to do. Bonus: You may even have some of these supplies already handy to hold you over for the time being. Bring on the exhaustion.

Meghan Markle‘s first royal tour is coming to an end, so naturally she’s been winding things down with style. On Saturday, she and Prince Harry attended the closing ceremony of the Invictus Games in Sydney, and Markle took a moment to give a heartfelt speech while wearing an elegant, olive green Antonio Berardi tuxedo dress.
Speaking to an audience of 12,000 people at Qudos Bank Arena, Markle looked effortlessly chic in the halterneck tuxedo dress, which just so happened to fall in line with one her favorite silhouettes (she wore a similar style back in August, when she and Prince Harry attended a special charity performance of the musical Hamilton). She finished off the look with a pair of peachy-tan Aquazurra heels and a red poppy pin, which is a sign of support for those who have served in the Armed Forces and their families.

The Invictus Games are a international adaptive sporting event that Markle’s husband Prince Harry founded four years ago. During the weeklong games, wounded, sick, or injured armed services members and veterans take place in a variety of sports competitions designed to empower and inspire.
In her remarks Saturday night, Markle talked about how the Invictus Games have evolved and shared her own experiences visiting troops in the past.
“In traveling to these military bases, I was given a very special glimpse into the lives of those who serve our countries. I was able to see the unshakeable bond between servicemen and -women on the ground together, but at the same time to feel the palpable longing for family and friends while deployed. Once home, the need for that anchor of support from loved ones, especially given how much it accelerates recovery and rehabilitation is immeasurable,” she said. “I’ve been reminded of those memories here. During this year’s Games in Sydney, I’ve witnessed the most amazing support networks that surround competitors, and I’ve had the privilege of meeting several of these family and friends.”
Her remarks at the ceremony marked her second big speech of the royal tour: She’d given her first at the University of the South Pacific in Fiji this week, discussing the importance of empowering women and girls through education.
The Invictus Games’ closing ceremony means the 16-day royal tour is almost finished, too. It’s been a whirlwind for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who have traveled to Australia, Fiji, and Tonga so far, and even included a surprise announcement that their first child is on the way. They’re heading to New Zealand next—and hopefully getting some much-needed rest afterwards.
As the first trailer for Dark Phoenix depicts, we have many reasons to be worried about Jean Gray (Sophie Turner) thanks to the aftermath of a mission gone wrong with the rest of her X-Men gang.
Serving as the catalyst for these superheroes, a routine rescue mission in space soon turns dangerous when a solar flair strikes Jean. For any other person, that would’ve meant death, but thanks to her extremely powerful mutant DNA, it means one thing and one thing only: unleashing within her an even more powerful mutant (the titular Dark Phoenix), one that wants to cause nothing but catastrophe and chaos, of course! It’s not ideal for this faithful team of do-gooders, but thanks to the help of her fellow X-Men — all your favorites, like a shape-shifting Jennifer Lawrence and a magnetic Michael Fassbender, are back — she might be able to squash away her second personality for good, much to the chagrin of Jessica Chastain’s new villain.
To better prepare for these dual roles, Turner rigorously studied multiple personality disorder and schizophrenia in the lead-up to filming. “So many scenes I have to go from broken-down Jean — that’s when she’s most susceptible to Phoenix infiltrating her — to this confident, arrogant, judgmental character within milliseconds,” she told EW earlier this year.

Chastain, as the film’s antagonist, also noted the amusing inspiration for her character, who defies what we typically see in a superhero outing. “Simon [Kinberg, the director] and I were talking about the character and I said, ‘I keep thinking of the vet who tells you you need to put your dog down,’” she explained. “There’s something very clinical about it.”
Longtime sports journalists Andrea Kremer and Hannah Storm will make history this week as the first female duo ever to call an NFL game as part of Amazon Prime Video’s newest streaming efforts.
Amazon has announced it will offer “Thursday Night Football” for Prime customers, and they’ve tapped Kremer and Storm to provide commentary and analysis for 11 of the games they’ll show, kicking off Thursday when the L.A. Rams host the Minnesota Vikings. Their decision to hire the award-winning sports commentators was quickly hailed as a refreshing change in sports journalism, and both women released statements expressing how excited they are to work together.
“Teaming up with Hannah and Amazon for this is truly special,” Kremer said. “Hannah is a brilliant journalist and she has been a friend for many years. With decades of experience as storytellers, we will be bringing a different voice and viewpoint to covering the game of football.”
Storm also praised her new partner in a statement: “I can’t imagine embarking upon this new role with anyone better than Andrea. A lifelong friend with Pro Football Hall of Fame credentials, she is the perfect partner. Together we’re looking forward to offering a new option for Prime members on Thursday nights and I’m excited to get to work!”
Amazon Prime will also offer Spanish-language and U.K. feeds, as well as an option with commentators Joe Buck and Troy Aikman calling the games.
As NPR points out, the announcement comes just a year after Beth Mowins became the first broadcaster to call an NFL game on national television. The first woman to call an NFL game ever was Gayle Sierens in 1987, when she called a regional NBC broadcast of a Seahawks-Chiefs game.
While people flooded Twitter with positive reactions to Kremer and Storm’s game-changing news, there were plenty of gross and disappointing comments that exposed the pervasive sexism in sports. Still, both women responded with grace, choosing to thank supporters instead.
“Thanks so much to everyone who has given me and @Andrea_Kremer a shout-out today…Couldn’t ask for a better partner and opportunity! See y’all for #TNF on @PrimeVideo for a great first matchup #MINvsLAR,” Storm tweeted, while Kremer said, “Heartfelt thanks to all those who have reached out to @HannahStormESPN & me today with your words of support. Incredibly grateful for the opportunity & i feel like the players in the 2 week run up to the Super Bowl… can’t wait for gameday TNF on @PrimeVideo.”
