Carrie Bradshaw Would Absolutely Drink Sarah Jessica Parker's New Wine


Sarah Jessica Parker and her Sex and the City character, Carrie Bradshaw, may seem similar, but the actress has said for years they’re really nothing alike. Not even their drink of choice is the same. Carrie, as fans know, was fond of the cosmopolitan but Parker prefers wine—so much so that she just launched her own sauvignon blanc with New Zealand winery Invivo, called “Invivo X, SJP.”

Adding another project to her resume is all in a day’s work for Parker, who most recently starred in and executive produced the HBO series Divorce, has a booming shoe business, and now can call herself a sommelier in the making. Below, we chat with the Emmy winner about her wine, her work, and whether Carrie might ever swap out her signature cocktail for a crisp glass of white.

Glamour: What initially made you want to get into the wine game?

Sarah Jessica Parker: I’d been contacted by Invivo well over a year ago, and I was sort of surprised by the inquiry because I had not ever pondered or fantasized about producing a sauvignon blanc, let alone any wine. And though it seemed far-fetched that I might be able to do it or contribute anything, I spent a lot of time talking to them and learning about their business. After many conversations, I decided I thought it would be a very interesting experience and a privileged opportunity to learn about a business that, beyond being a consumer, I was completely unfamiliar with.

What did you want your sauvignon blanc to taste like as you were making it?

SJP: I think I wanted to pay a nice amount of attention to the conventional idea of what a sauvignon blanc is. People are very serious about their wines, and particularly I think sauvignon blanc drinkers are very specific. So I wanted to apply some of those rules, but I also wanted to distinguish it in some way. And we got there. We got there in ways that I might never have imagined. It was just a wonderful process of blending and splitting that atom and getting it to where we really were excited about it, and that it felt uniquely different in the market, but still could be called, with authority, a sauvignon blanc.

It Chapter Two Review: How Jessica Chastain Made Sure a Key Scene From the Book Was Included


When It hit theaters in 2017, a new generation of fans—ones who hadn’t read the Stephen King novel or seen the 1990 miniseries—may have expected a simple horror movie about a kid-murdering clown. Instead, they got an unsettling look at the intense pain and fear that develops from childhood trauma via the Losers’ Club, a group of kids (Bill, Richie, Ben, Mike, Eddie, Stanley, and Beverly) who face their personal demons head on in the form of “It,” a creature that shape-shifts itself into its opponents’ worst nightmares.

The sequel It Chapter Two, now in theaters, picks up 27 years later. The Losers’ Club may have defeated Pennywise two decades ago, but they’re still dealing with the effects. Bill (James McAvoy), a successful-ish author, is haunted by guilt over his brother’s death. Ben (Jay Ryan) has transformed into a hot architect still pining over his childhood crush. Though Richie (Bill Hader) turned his wise-cracking personality into a stand-up career, he’s without love, family, or friends who aren’t employees. Mike (Isaiah Mustafa) gave up his dreams to stay in Derry and obsess over Pennywise. Eddie (James Ransone) remains a hypochondriac, but he’s replaced his overbearing, emotionally abusive mother with an overbearing, emotionally abusive wife. Only Stanley (Andy Bean), now a wealthy accountant with a happy marriage, seems to be centered…that is, until Mike calls with the news that Pennywise is back.

And then there’s Beverly, the only female member of the Losers’ Club. She was abused by her father growing up; now, she’s in an abusive marriage. When Mike calls about Pennywise’s return, though, something switches. Beverly packs a bag, ready to book the first flight to Maine. Her husband catches her in the act, accuses her of cheating, and physically assaults her. It’s clear this isn’t the first attack—but this time Beverly fights back. On her way out the door, as her husband nurses his wounds and shouts after her, she pointedly leaves her wedding ring on the front porch.

For Jessica Chastain, who plays adult Beverly, this scene was important to get right. It’s the first time we’re re-introduced to Beverly, and Chastain had to convey what might have happened to the character in the 27-year gap since we’ve last seen her.

“I had to think about Beverly’s journey, in terms of the pattern that she kept repeating,” she tells me about preparing for It Chapter Two. “In terms of what she thought love was supposed to be—that it was something that was supposed to be conflicted and difficult and painful and abusive in some sense. She didn’t really understand what love truly could be. That’s where I started with this character. Twenty-seven years of repeating the same pattern.”

Jessica Biel Joins Anti-Vaxx Advocate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to Lobby Against California Vaccination Bill


Actress Jessica Biel is being called an anti-vaxxer after appearing with Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to oppose a California vaccination bill that limits medical exemptions. In recent years Kennedy has been outspoken about vaccinations, putting forth the (scientifically-disproven) claims that vaccines can cause autism, among other problems. “They can put anything they want in that vaccine and they have no accountability for it,” he said in 2015. “They get the shot, that night they have a fever of a hundred and three, they go to sleep, and three months later their brain is gone…This is a holocaust, what this is doing to our country.” (Kennedy later apologized for the “holocaust” remark. Several members of the Kennedy family—including former lieutenant governor of Maryland Kathleen Kennedy Townsend; Joseph P. Kennedy II, a former member of Congress from Massachusetts; and Maeve Kennedy McKean, the executive director of Global Health Initiatives at Georgetown University—have spoken out against Robert Kennedy’s vaccine position.)

On Wednesday (June 12), Kennedy, founder of the Children’s Health Defense anti-vaccination group, posted photos of himself with Biel at the California State House. “Please say thank you to the courageous @jessicabiel for a busy and productive day at the California State House,” he wrote on Instagram.

Jezebel was the first to call attention to the post and later The Daily Beast spoke to Kennedy who confirmed that the two were in Sacramento to lobby against SB 276, a bill that would limit medical exemptions from vaccinations without approval from a state public health officer. Basically, this bill would make it harder for anti-vaxxers to get out of vaccinating their children by increasing oversight by medical professionals.

Choosing not to vaccinate is a public health issue. Unvaccinated individuals can put other people at risk of getting life-threatening diseases—experts point to the anti-vaxx movement as the cause of the recent measles outbreaks across the U.S. that have now affected 28 states and more than 1,000 individuals.

Kennedy, speaking to The Daily Beast, would not call Biel an anti-vaxxer directly. “I would say that she was for safe vaccines and for medical freedom,” he said. “My body, my choice.” “The biggest problem with the bill,” he continued. “Which is something I think Jessica is concerned with, is that a doctor who has made a determination—if he has found children in this state whose doctors have determined that they’re too fragile to receive vaccinations—this bill would overrule the doctors and force them to be vaccinated anyways.”

Jessica Simpson Just Gave Birth to Baby Number 3, and Her Name Is Truly Unique


Jessica Simpson and her husband, former NFL star Eric Johnson, have welcomed baby number three, People magazine confirmed on Tuesday, March 19.

The music and fashion mogul gave birth to a daughter, Birdie Mae Johnson, on March 19, weighing in at 10 pounds and 13 ounces. Simpson has two other children with Johnson: a five-year-old son, Ace Knute, and six-year-old daughter, Maxwell Drew. “We are so happy and proud to announce the birth of our perfect daughter, Birdie Mae Johnson,” she posted to Instagram.

Simpson revealed on Instagram back in September that she and Johnson were expecting. “SURPRISE,” Simpson wrote, alongside pics of her two children with pink balloons. “This little baby girl will make us a family of five. We couldn’t be happier to announce this precious blessing of life.”

Though Birdie’s name is unique, it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise. Simpson’s baby shower had “Birdie’s Nest” written in neon lights, and she captioned several of her Instagram posts with it. Fans put two and two together.

Then on March 3, Simpson foreshadowed the name even more in an Instagram post about dealing with bronchitis while pregnant. “After a week in the hospital for bronchitis (my fourth time in 2 months), I’m finally home,” she posted. “Coughing with Birdie has been a crazy painful journey. I am slowly getting healthier every day. Baby girl was monitored and is doing amazing! ?? I am on my way to healthy and counting down the days to see her sweet smile. Sending love and prayers to all the mothers who are going or have gone through this. OUCH.”

Simpson actually posted several things like this throughout her pregnancy. She was quite transparent about the struggles she experienced—from breaking a toilet seat to feet swelling. “Any remedies?! Help!!!!” Simpson posted in January, talking about the latter issue.

2 Dope Queens' Phoebe Robinson and Jessica Williams Are Changing Comedy in the Best Way Possible


Maybe you noticed there’s a big cultural shift happening in comedy right now? New, more diverse talent is rising up and gaining influence, while established male comedians like Louis C.K. and T.J. Miller are taking career hits after sexual misconduct allegations come to light. Of course, the same men then launch their comeback tours in a matter of months—Rome wasn’t built in a day, I guess—but the point here is that the new guard is now in a better position to call them out and shine a light on the bullshit.

An example of this happened just last week, after Phoebe Robinson shared on Instagram that she left a New York comedy club when she learned a comedian accused of sexual misconduct was added to the lineup with her. “It’s weird because stand-up comedy is sort of all over the place,” Robinson, a comedian and co-host with Jessica Williams of the 2 Dope Queens podcast and HBO special, told Glamour at a Sundance event. “The rules that might apply at other workplaces don’t really apply there for whatever reason.”

She says she was excited to do the show—but when the comic accused of sexual misconduct dropped in, she thought, “Oh, this guy’s bad news.”

So, “I just left,” she says. “I just really don’t want to be on the same stage as these predators, as these abusers. I think it’s really disgusting and terrible that other comics are being forced into that position. It sucks that audience members have to be like, do I get up and leave now? Like, I didn’t pay to see this person perform.”

The reaction to her Instagram post, she says, has been nice so far. “I think there’s always going to be that faction of like, ‘Just get over it!’ Or, ‘You’re just jealous that this guy’s famous.’ And I’m like, ‘No, it’s bigger than comedy.’ I just don’t want to do a show with an alleged rapist. I just don’t.”

Robinson hopes that as more queer people, people of color, and women gain power more people will come around to her perspective. Her co-star Williams echoes this, telling Glamour, “I want to see more stories from people different from a cis, straight, white male. I want to see more stories of people of color and queer people. I really want new, innovative stories.”

The culture shift might not be happening as fast as we’d like, but Robinson and Williams are doing their part to keep pushing. “Whatever I can do in my power, I will,” Robinson says. “I really do want to figure out a way that all of us comics can come to some sort of agreement, where we can really make some active change. Right now, the thing that I can do is just walk out.”

2 Dope Queens returns to HBO for a second series of four hour-long specials on February 8.
